We have a Gym!!!

Many of you recall just one year ago we broke ground for our new building. We are pleased and delighted to report

that the construction phase of the building is complete and classes are currently being held in the new art and music

rooms as well as the new gymnasium. We expect to add the final finishing touches to the building by the end of the

year. We are seeking funding to finish the wood floor, purchase some additional cabinets and art room equipment,

and add to our musical instrument offerings. Please see the article on the following page to find out how you can

help support these worthwhile efforts. Said Athletic Director Jerry Lomurno, “This is a dream come true. The

gym is fabulous! We are looking forward to playing real ‘home’ games, now. “

Recognizing that educational success will be realized only when the essential underlying triad of student – teacher – parent/guardian is in harmony, the mission of the Horizon Science Academy, Cleveland is to create a partnership among this triad that will provide our youth with the support necessary to reach their highest potential, intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically. The educational vision and innovation, which are crucial to accomplishing this mission, are organized under two main headings: specific elements and whole-school design. The specific design elements fall into five categories:

1. Rigorous curricula, instruction, and assessment;

2. Leadership, governance, and staffing; 3. Parent and community involvement; 4. Technology; 5. Financing.

It is the educator's responsibility to construct a program, which engages and motivates students to invest their talents, energy, and enthusiasm in completing their schoolwork in an exemplary manner. Individual attention in the form of one-on-one tutoring, intensive counseling and individualized goals is the key to motivating our students. Cooperation with area universities is an effective means toward enhancing the effectiveness of our tutoring system. Diversity is an essential element in a well-rounded education. It also serves as a key to success in our diverse American society, our institutions of higher learning, and our inter-connected global economy. Multi-cultural aspects are integrated into our curricula not only through geography and foreign language but also within each of our subject areas. Our students are encouraged to make additional contact with other cultures by participating in our student exchange programs and academic Olympiads.

It is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees, in alliance with the community, to guide the school and hold it true to its mission. To this end the Board of Trustees provides the school with support to ensure optimal conditions for the achievement and continued growth and development of each student.

OUR PHILOSOPHY It is our belief that each child has an inherent curiosity and love of learning; and that each child has a unique intelligence, level of capability, and learning style. With this in mind, we motivate our students and expect them to strive toward their highest levels of capability while addressing their individual learning styles, this fostering within them a life-long love of learning.

activities, and leadership within the school and community. The Army sponsored Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program at HSA has been awarded the status of Honor Unit with Distinction. The purpose of JROTC is to instill in students in secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. Col. Thomas Brown leads the program. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parental involvement is part of our job. Research demonstrates that parent involvement in children's learning is positively related to achievement. Further, the more intensively parents are involved in their children's

learning, the more beneficial the achievement effects. This holds true for all types of parent involvement in children's learning and for all ages of students. Horizon Science Academy does its best to involve parents by organizing academic workshops, counseling seminars and one on one interviews and meetings with parents and guardians. SHARING SUCCESS Horizon Science Academy communicates important information to parents, guardians, students, and the community in a number of ways. Our web site, www.hsas.org, provides one source of information, updates, and announcements to the general public. It is updated on a regular basis with new messages. The Horizon TIMES monthly newsletter is sent electronically to all stakeholders: parents, community civic leaders, governmental officials, and others. The newsletter is a great tool in disseminating

information about assessment results.

In the front line of education, the classroom teachers meet on a weekly basis to review strategies, make student recommendations, and discuss specific issues. Teachers meet with parents by phone, email, or in person on a regular basis. GUIDANCE The Guidance Department at HSA is dedicated to providing information and resources to its students beginning in their freshmen year in school. Counselors monitor student progress as well as schedules and course selection. Last year the Department organized an in-school College Fair attended by admission officers from colleges and universities. Students are able to ask questions, gather information, and learn more about their options. Counselors also provide site visits throughout the year for groups of juniors and seniors to visit Ohio school campuses. Another critical function of the Guidance Department is to provide assistance with financial aid research and submission of necessary completed forms.
