No, or us in SU Singapore, it’s Today God is FIRST!
As Rev Yeo recalled his rst encounter with
the organisation in the 1950s through the
proverbial Daily Notes rom England, he
called on the senior pastors, church leaders, mission
organisational leaders, school principals, ministry
partners and donors in attendance to pass the goodnews on.
We were honoured to have many pastors
and ministry partners celebrate God’s goodness
with us, including representatives rom St Andrew’s
Cathedral, All Saints’ Presbyterian Church, Grace
Methodist Church, Boscombe Lie Church, Mount
Hermon Bible-Presbyterian Church, Eternal Lie
Assembly, Sembawang Assembly o God, Hakka
Methodist Church, Zion Full Gospel Church, Sion
Christian Church, Yio Chu Kang Chapel, SingaporeGlobal Centre or Missions, Bible Society o Singapore,
St Andrew’s Junior School, St Hilda’s Primary School,
SKS Books, among others.
Rosalind Tan o Prinsep Street Presbyterian
Church testied o the great impact o SU’s children’s
ministry on their young through children’s camps
and church camps. And even though Rev Andrew
Raman, Vicar o Chapel o Christ the Redeemer, could
not make it to the event, he blessed us with words o
encouragement through his email.
Beore the
closing prayer
and benediction,
Rev Henry Hong,
senior pastor o All
Saints’ Presbyterian
C h u r c h ,
presented David
with a lamp as a
symbolic reminder
o Isaiah 60:1-3 or SU Singapore. He also assured David that he and
all those present will always be supportive o SU’s
ministry.

She’s all but 21 years old yet
Ong Xuan is already into her
seventh year o involvement
in the Living Spring Fellowship’s
children’s ministry.
In January 2010, she
attended Scripture Union’s TEACH
Fresh Master’s Workshop beore
signing up or all ve modules o the
Certifcate in Practical Children’s
Ministry.
“The modules are very
comprehensive and cover topics
ranging rom biblical basis o
children’s ministry to lessonplanning, rom creative worship to
classroom management - almost
everything you need to know or
the ministry (theory wise); much
like a survival guide or an eective
children ministry,” said Ong Xuan.
“Besides, what I like about
the course is that it requires
participants to ulll practical
requirements such as helping out ata Christian school’s chapel service,
Sunday School, children’s camp
and a holiday trek programme. The
valuable eedback we get helps us
to improve ourselves.”
I’m so happy I signed up for the entire course! It is:
• Comprehensive – almost everything a teacher needs to
know for children’s ministry!
• Creative – gives a whole new perspective
• Contextualised – hands-on practicum in mission schools, churches and holiday trek programme and camps.

The Certicate in Practical Children’s Ministry is a TEACH Fresh
Training Initiative o Scripture Union Singapore. It provides
ministry leaders who want to grow in their love o God and or
children the ollowing:
• Systematic learning o basic but creative, cutting-edge
knowledge in children’s ministry.• Service opportunities through compulsory hands-on
practicum arrangements in mission schools, churches
and camps.
• Skills to reach and raise the next generation o 4-to14-
year-olds to become agents o God’s transormation in
the world.
Thank God for the Overwhelming Response! MODULE 5 : TEACHER DEVELOPMENTJul 27 Teaching to Change Lives

We believe that training is an on-going
and lie-long process, and that those
ministering to children, young people
and amilies should be equipped with
eective, cutting-edge training that
provides such compulsory hands-on
practicum and tools which we oer in
our Certicate programme.

programme, I became a better person, and I started to
show respect towards my teachers,” said Alvin.
Another I CAN student’s poor grades in primary
school aected his sel-esteem later as a teenager. “I
was not able to do well in my studies and I ailed all my
subjects,” Matthew* disclosed.
The I CAN programme has since bolstered hissense o worth. These days, Matthew eels good about
himsel, and is motivated to do his best. “I started to
believe in mysel and gradually my condence grew. I
was able to pass and do well in my studies,” he enthused.
He knows he is cherished and valued. Just like the two-
dollar note.
The I CAN programme launched this year at Kuo
Chuan Presbyterian Primary School has made a positive
impact on the primary school children who have not
only learned to respect their teachers and parents butalso to believe they can change.
Raymond* who participated in the programme
held in his school ound the lessons un and helpul.
“Everyone is special in dierent ways but we all can
make a dierence,” he said, adding proudly that his
teachers have noticed improvements in his work and
behaviour since he attended the programme.
It took a mere a two-dollar note to make 12-year-old
Kai* realise that ailures in lie do not diminish how
precious he really is.
A participant in the I CAN motivational
programme, Kai was all ears when instructor Barnabas
Loh, SU Ministry Executive, took out the purple
note, crushed it, stomped on it, and asked i anyone
would still want it. “I recognised then that we may ailour exams, disappoint our parents, but we are still
valuable,” Kai said, with a spark in his eyes.
During the 14-week motivational programme,
Kai and his schoolmates picked up many “how to’s” to
equip them to handle anger, make and treat riends and
deal with hurts and pain. They were also taught how
to make right choices, set goals and achievements and
show appreciation - in short, Emotional Intelligence.
Outdoor activities such as nature hikes, camp-res, barbeques and shing trips made the learning
all the more interesting and rereshing. Furthermore,
the hands-on practical sessions simulating true-lie
situations opened Alvin’s* eyes to his own unruly
behaviour.
Frequently up to mischie in school, he would
walk around in class and shout vulgarities, showing
little respect towards his teachers. “Through the I CAN

This June, SU Singapore was honoured to partner with 13 churches to teach God’s
Word and minister to a total o 489 pre-primary and primary school childrenduring their church camps held either overseas or in Singapore.
We thank God or ollowing churches that called the SU team back to run our
Holiday Trek programme designed specially or children in church camps. We were also
very delighted to be able to support several churches or the frst time:
The camp theme was SOLID ROCK, with Psalm 62:2 (ESV) as the theme verse: “He
only is my rock and my salvation, my ortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”
Children discovered the Bible truth that Jesus Christ is the Solid Rock in whom
they can put their trust because he is ully dependable and trustworthy - or our
salvation, protection, and provision o help in times o trouble.
SU Trek Leaders, consisting o several veterans and current students o SU’sCertifcate in Practical Children’s Ministry, taught the Bible lessons creatively with
exuberant praise & worship, games that paved the way or the lessons and reinorced
the Bible truths, puppet shows, drama, role-play and group discussions.

n the month o June, SU Ministry Executive Barnabas Loh was invited or the rst time by the ollowing churches
to speak to their youths at their camps. It was an awesome and wonderul experience to be able to minister to
the group o 14- to 16-year-olds about being God’s Masterpiece. Many youths and adult leaders were blessed bythe sermons, lie stories, un activities as well as the song, “There Is Love For You”, composed by Barnabas, and the

Twenty-our delegates rom eight
national movements - Korea,
Indonesia, Hong Kong, Cambodia,
Myanmar, Malaysia, Brunei and
Singapore - underwent 13 gruelling
days o training on 20 subjects by these
11 aculty members rom 13 to 24 May
2011: Jon Ong, Rev Dr Alred Yeo, Terry
Williams, Jason Fong, David Leong, Hans
Wuysang, Rev Tadashi Oyamada, Dr
Andrew Goh, Yoong Fook Loy, Dr Cheah
Fung Fong and Valerie Ong. It was the
rst time SU Singapore had hosted the
ON Institute cum Children’s Ministry
Institute since their establishment in
1994.
The ON Institute (ONI) was
conceived by Rev Koh Gim Lam ater
his appointment as Regional Secretary
o SU East Asia in 1993. He saw the
need to provide a more comprehensive
orientation training programme, one
that encompassed SU history, aims,
mission, ethos, working principles and
core ministry knowledge and skills in
the programme, and which would beespecially crucial to SU movements that
lack the expertise and resources to train
their new sta.
Held once in two years, the
programme includes two weeks
o intensive residential orientation
training programme and a week o
hands-on ministry exposure. This year,
the latter was made non-mandatory or
all participants. Instead, the Children’sMinistry Institute was mandatory. This
was because o the worldwide renewed
emphasis on the 4-14 window/
generation.
Rev Tadashi Oyamada, SU E & WA
Regional CEO, was very pleased with
the success o ONI and attributed this
to ONI’s rich history and solid content.
“It is a good thing to be able to learn
so much. Jesus emphasised training.
He trained his 12 disciples. And it is
important to be trained to be a good
servant o the Lord.”

The following is an excerpt of interviews with three faculty members: Terry Williams, SU
International Children’s Ministry Consultant; Jason Fong, SUEWA Youth Ministry Co-ordinator
and Hans Wuysang, SUEWA Bible Ministry Co-ordinator:
What would say were the special “Ah-ha!”
or “Wow!” moments during your stay at ONInstitute?
Terry: Interactive learning always creates some
special “Ah-ha!” moments as delegates engage with
the learning in a un and creative way thst will stay
with them.
Walking the streets o Singapore with a small group
o delegates created the space and the time to get
to know some o them more personally. Meal times
provided the same opportunities - or cross culturalinterchanges and un.
Jason: I am an “SU veteran”, yet I continue to learn
rom others around me. I think my “Wow!” moment
was seeing how the Koreans had made so much
eort to interact with others.
Hans: The “angel” o mine continued to surprise me
with pleasant things.
What is your prayer/wish or the ON Institute
13 cum CMI participants?
Terry: My prayer is that the enthusiasm, experiences,
and knowledge that were so much a part o the ON
Institute 2011 will live long in the memories o each
delegate and be constantly outworked, under the
direction o the Holy Spirit, as each person serves
God in his or her corner o His vineyard.
Jason: My prayers: that the seeds sown at ONI will
germinate, take root, grow and bear ruit.
Hans: May all the participants be able put into
practice what they have received and experienced,
and their work/ministry will have more o the SU
character and ethos.
What was the most signifcant aspect o ON
Institute 13 cum CMI 2011 to you?
Terry: The commitment o the Region to invest in the
lives and ministry o SU sta rom a wide range o
movements. To live in community, as you did, and with
the intensive program o specialised inputs, makes
this a strategic investment in the work o SU and the
Kingdom.
This is a great model or downloading the values
and working principles o the movement to the next
generation o SU workers.
Jason: Training! Human resource development is a key
actor in the equation o growth and sustainability. I
SU E& WA is to continue to grow, we must continue
to train and develop our leaders, sta and volunteers.
Hans: ON Institute gives the new sta a clear
understanding o the vision and mission and
philosophy o SU and how to put it into practice.
In terms o the group dynamics which you
experienced and saw among the participants,
what captivated you?
Terry: I was encouraged to see delegates rom the
larger movements separated and mixing and not
remaining in their ’sae’ country groups.
Jason: The bonding and riendship orged among
most o the participants is great. I see some o these
relationships have continued post-ON Institute via
Facebook. How did this happen? I think this is the result
o “Christian camping”. When people stay together in
“a temporary community” or almost two weeks, such
dynamics will sure to be catalysed.
Hans: I saw that all participants got involved in every
programme and interacted and strengthened their
relationship with one another. I think it is because the
environment in this camp or training is built with good
ellowship and good leadership.
