There was a comedian, I believe George Carlin, who had a routine where he asked the question: "The Jewish holidays are either early or late, but are they ever on time?!" Well, this year they are early, which means we must begin preparing for the Holy Days and holidays early and certainly earlier than we might want to.

Rabbi’s Message Continued

Focusing on these words we come to understand that during Elul we must prepare our minds, hearts and bodies for these special days to come. We need to assess how we think, how we feel, and how we express with our bodies, our thoughts, and our emotions. We need to come to understand that our physical body is but the vehicle to express our inner life. We must, therefore, work out a way in which both are in harmony so that we can best and most effectively express our higher nature that is within.

Take five minutes every day during Elul for this spiritual process of High Holyday preparation. While sitting down, take a few deep breaths and then with eyes closed do a review of the year past. Try to visualize or reflect on incidents that occurred and your reactions to them. Make an assessment of how and what you did and then develop a list of corrective actions to take in the future when confronted by a similar situation. Each day you can also choose one good quality of yours to celebrate and one "bad" quality of yours to work on.

If you can accomplish this spiritual task you will have properly prepared for the Holy Days to come. As you will then discover, our prayer services you attend will then take on so much more meaning.

I also welcome you to a special class that I will hold on Thursday night, August 26th, at 8 pm entitled: "Gearing Up for the Holy Days: An Outline of What is to Come". I am doing this in fulfillment of the words found in the kabbalistic text Matey Ephraiim, "Before Rosh HaShanah you will teach and review the order of the service to your children and the members of your household, so that they will not need to stop their prayers to understand the order and the meaning of the service for the New Year." I pray you will be able to attend this interesting and valuable class.

My prayers for a spiritually successful Elul!

Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program begins on Monday night, September 20th, at 8 pm. The class, taught by the Rabbi and Yaffa Lecce, will begin by teaching the Hebrew alphabet. By June, all students will become Bar/Bat Mitzvah, reading from the Torah. No prior Hebrew knowledge is necessary. The class will be on Monday nights until June.

Beginners Hebrew for Adults begins on Monday night, September 20th, at 8 pm. Within six months all students will be able to read any Hebrew text. Why not be able to read the Four Questions at this year’s Passover Seder and make your children proud of you?

Torah at Panera will begin on Saturday, September 11th, at 10 am. This class has proven to be a real winner, attracting many students to Panera’s restaurant on Sunrise Highway in Sayville enjoying Torah study while eating a good breakfast.

The Rabbi will begin a class on teaching the Books of the Bible for Adults. The Jewish people are the people of the book so if you are a part of this people you should learn about this book. Did you know it is called Tanach in Hebrew and what this word stands for? Did you know there are thirty-nine books to the Hebrew Bible? During the course of the year the Rabbi will teach selected readings from the Bible’s three main sections beginning with the Book of Joshua. The books will be studied from spiritual as well as historical and literary perspectives. The first class will be held on October 28th at 8 pm and the second Thursday of the month thereafter.

The Rabbi will hold Meditation Moments for peace and healing on the first Friday night of the month after services.

If there are other programs you would like to see in the Temple, please write or speak with Rabbi. Please RSVP the office so the Rabbi knows to expect you at the above mentioned program.

The Rabbi is continuing his special Adult Education Self-study Program. This year the program will be "The Great Works of Jewish Religious Life". The class will look at the Mishnah, Midrash, Talmud, Legal Codes, Respona Literature, and the Zohar. The first introductory class will be held on Thursday night, November 4th, at 8 pm.

President’s Message                                         Joel Silverman

Some of you may recall an article in Newsday early in July that made reference to the declining Jewish population on Long Island and the effect it was having on the financial viability of synagogues in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Over a twenty year period there has been a drop of more than 25% in affiliated and unaffiliated Jewish families. Ten temple mergers have occurred in recent years and a number of congregations have found it necessary to sell property or rent or share space with congregations of different faiths, just to make ends meet.

So where does B’nai Israel stand? Good news: our membership, down slightly from around 450 families several years ago, has been holding its own in the 430 range over the past two years. Less good news: due to the troubled economy, our dues income is down considerably during that same period. But we are doing our best to deal with both membership and income issues as we prepare for the future.

We have been invited to join the Central Suffolk Jewish Alliance, a group of about a dozen synagogues with the mission of reaching out to unaffiliated Jewish and interfaith families in the area who could benefit from Temple membership. You may have already seen one of three CSJA ads in Saturday editions of Newsday, extending an open invitation to our August open house Shabbats. You can help by reaching out to friends, family or business associates and suggest that they “try us out” over the next several Friday nights. We offer High Holy Day tickets to non-members for a fee, but will apply the full cost to their dues if your “guest” becomes a member of B’nai Israel before the end of the year.

We expect to have mounted in our lobby in time for the High Holy Days a new “donor wall” arrangement made

possible through the generosity of the estate of long time Temple member Stan Sonkin and his family. The new plaques are intended to recognize sizeable donations made to B’nai Israel by members (and sometimes friends) and to encourage others to help out with significant gifts, endowments or other contributions. The Temple Office will refer you to a member of the Donations Committee if you may be able to contribute in this way.

Please be aware if you are not already, that we have reestablished our Senior Youth Group under the adult leadership of Howard Gottesman and Ira Rosenfeld. Planning is underway for an interesting and active school year ahead, including events with other similar groups in the area. The next meeting/event is scheduled for Sunday, August 22nd. Temple members, Non-Temple Religious School students and unaffiliated Jewish teens grades 9 through 12 are welcome and encouraged to join us. (See information on page 7 of this bulletin.)

Lastly, Temple families should have already received tickets and information regarding High Holy Day services. Please look over and become familiar with the material. In particular, be aware that once again this year you will be asked to show your ticket at the door. And, ushers have been asked to enforce our guidelines to help ensure a spiritual and hassle free Holy Day experience for all. We hope to have a full house and to see you there. Until then…

Shalom,

Joel Silverman

Traditional Rabbinic teachers consider the Song of Songs to be an allegorical description of God’s love for Israel. The name of the month Elul consists of the four Hebrew letters Alef, Lamed, Vav, and Lamed. These four letters were interpreted as referring to the first letters of the words in Song of Songs 6:3: Ani Ledodi Vedodi Li, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” Therefore, Elul is the period of reconciliation between God and Israel.(urj.org) As we approach this time of reflection and renewal, we have opportunities not only to reconcile our relationship with God, but also with others and ourselves. For some, it is a simple task that flows as easily as a prayer from the deepest part of our heart. For others, a more formal review of the past year is necessary. Perhaps it would benefit us all if we were just to answer a few simple questions in preparation for these solemn and joyous days to come. 1. What are the elements in my life that I’m ready to leave behind in 5770? 2. What elements are missing from my life that I want to embrace in 5771? 3. During this month of Elul, what steps do I need to take to prepare for the High Holy days? 4. Who am I going to need to speak with to ask forgiveness? 5. What am I going to have to forgive myself for? 6. How can I utilize the days prior to set goals for myself as an individual for the year 5771? 7. What do I need from myself and other people to accomplish these goals? May we all come together in our sacred home of B’nai Israel to share in the High Holidays ushering in the year 5771. May this New Year bring to you and your family many days of joy and beauty! Rosh Hashanah is the New Year, and it’s time to start the year right! Come to Temple, meet “new” people, visit with “old” friends, and prepare for the Holy days ahead. Rosh Hashanah is also the time of year when we confess our sins, as individuals and as a community, and ask for forgiveness. We pray to be entered in the Book of Life for the year to come. The Rabbis understood that the introspection necessary for the “vidui” (confession of sins) requires preparation. So, the moving service of Selichot developed. For us, at B’nai Israel, Selichot has evolved into an enjoyable and meaningful evening of prayer, song, and of course, dinner. Please join us on Saturday, September 4th at 8 PM for a complete dinner catered by Woodbury Kosher Caterers. The meal will consist of stuffed cabbage, barbeque chicken, vegetables, mushroom barley, potato kugel, tossed salad, dessert, and coffee. Recession sensitive – for the third consecutive year, we are able to keep the cost at $23.50 per person. Please R.S.V.P. by calling the Temple office at 563-1660 by August 13th and return the tear-off below with your check. We also accept credit cards. Dinner will be followed by the service which will begin at about 9:30 PM. (It is not necessary to be at dinner. You may come to the service only, if you wish.)

Selichot Dinner

Selichot Dinner Reservation Form

Please mail all checks directly to and payable to B’nai Israel Reform Temple. We must have a minimum of 40 people to serve dinner, so respond ASAP (no later than 8/13/10).

Donations  We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.

Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

How to Donate: You can bring or mail a check identifying the intended fund to the Temple. You can also arrange to provide larger donations in installments. Please contact the Temple office if you have any questions. (631) 563-1660 or email [email protected]

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Endowments are publicized and often grow by attracting additional donations from others. You may name your endowment fund in honor or in memory of someone special. Please call the Temple Office at 563-1660 for further

Sustaining the Temple

The General Fund supports the Temple’s day-to-day operations. This fund helps the Temple meet its most immediate needs.

The Building Fund enables capital improvements such as renovations and new construction. The Temple will publish a brochure that describes desirable improvements.

The Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund adds to an account that the Rabbi uses for educational, charitable, and other

expenses of his choosing.

Adding Natural Beauty

The Landscaping Fund helps maintain and improve the appearance of the Temple’s grounds.

Flower Arrangement donations help provide the lovely floral displays we see at High Holy Days and other times.

 Involving Our Youth

The Youth Group Fund supports young people’s activities such as social events, educational

Honoring Memory  You can establish a memorial fund to perpetuate the memory of a loved one. Others often donate to the fund to honor the named person or the person’s family. A memorial fund can be started with a minimum donation of $1000. There are currently three memorial funds.

• The Ian Matarasso Memorial Fund

• The Ethan William Snair Memorial Fund

• The Sidney Sonkin Memorial Fund

Any occasion can be commemorated by an engraved plaque on the Honorial-Memorial Board in the Temple lobby or in the school

b u i l d i n g , a s a p p r o p r i a t e . T h e s e donations begin at $500.

A memorial plaque in the sanctuary will assure that a loved one’s name will always be mentioned for Kaddish. The donation is $200 for Temple members and $300 for non-Temple members.

A prayer book can be dedicated to commemorate an occasion or to honor someone special. An acknowledgement is placed on the book’s inside front cover. The donation is $36.

Any occasion can be commemorated by an inscribed plaque in an attractive new arrangement of donor plaques of various sizes to be placed in the Temple lobby. These donations begin at $1000.

Promoting the School  The Religious School Fund enhances educational programs and helps defray school operating costs. The Library Fund supports purchase of books, periodicals, and equipment. The Scholarship Fund provides assistance for those unable to pay the entire cost of tuition.

Adding to the Experience  The Fine Arts Fund helps purchase permanent artwork and Judaica, silver and other ritual items for services, decorations for the Temple and the school building, and other aesthetic improvements

Sharing Music

The Music Fund supports choir expenses and the Children’s Choir, and also helps provide special music programs such as the Jazz Shabbat and presentations by visiting performers.

Aiding the Community  The Outreach Program helps provide food and other necessities for those in need. The Help-a-Family Program gives financial aid to Temple members with hardships. You can direct your donation to help a specific family and remain anonymous if you wish. The Shiva Fund sends a platter to a house in mourning. You can direct your donation to help a specific family regardless of Temple affiliation.
