QUARTERBACKS One junior and tworedshirt freshmen will

line up in the spring to

    compete for the QB job.

    Logan Gray (6-2, 192, Jr.)

is the only letterman at the

    position and his experi-

ence taking snaps has beenlimited although he has

    also returned punts for

    the Bulldogs. His passing

    totals from 09 include

    5x12 passing for 31 yards.

    Aaron Murray (6-1, 206,

    RFr.) and Zach Metten-

    berger (6-5, 230, RFr.)

    both were highly regarded

    and entered Georgia early

    in January, 09. Although

    they had the advantage of

last spring practice as well as the fall, neither has ever taken a

    snap in a college game.

RUNNING BACKS With the return of the top two tailbacks from 2009, WashaunEaley (5-11, 205, So.) and Caleb King (5-11, 210, Jr.), the Dogs

had the luxury of moving Richard Samuel (6-2, 222, Jr.) to

linebacker, a position at which he excelled in high school. Ealey

led Georgia in rushing in 2009 with 125 carries for 717 yards and

three TDs. He was followed closely by King who carried 114

times for 594 yards and seven TDs. Also back providing depth

will be Carlton Thomas (5-7, 180, RSo.) who carried 22 times

for 92 yards in 09 and Dontavius Jackson (5-10, 205, RSo.) who

played in three games recording three carries for 38 yards.

    The fullback spot

    will also be a strength

    with the return of

    seniors Shaun Chapas

    (6-2, 245, Sr.) and

    Fred Munzenmaier

    (6-2, 240, Sr.). Chapas

    carried seven times

    for 45 yards and one

    TD in 09 along with

nine catches for 50yards and one TD.

    Munzenmaier added

    10 carries for 36 yards

    and 2 TDs. Both are

    exceptional block-

    ers. Charles White

    (6-1, 224, Jr.) has also

    recently moved from

    linebacker to fullback.

    2010 Spring Outlook

Georgia heads into the spring with lots of optimism on get-ting back into the upper echelon of the Southeastern Conference.

Despite winning eight or more games for the 13th consecutive

year in 2009, the Bulldogs had grown accustomed to better.

The Dogs enter the spring with three new defensive coaches

representing the largest single year change since head coach

Mark Richt took over in 2001. New defensive coordinator Todd

Grantham has come in to implement a 3-4 defensive scheme. Hisresume includes nine years in the college ranks with Michigan

State and Virginia Tech and 11 more in the NFL, most recently

with the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 and 09.

Other new coaches include secondary coach Scott Lakatos

who joins the Bulldogs after six years at UConn and lineback-

ers coach Warren Belin who has spent the last eight seasons at

Vanderbilt. Add returning veteran defensive line coach Rodney

Garner and the Dogs have a solid defensive unit in place to

    install the new scheme.

    Ontheeld,Georgiawillreturn17of24startersincluding

10 on offense. A total of 49 lettermen return. The Bulldogs also

return what may be the best kicking tandem in college football:

Drew Butler, winner of the 2009 Ray Guy Award as the nations

    toppunter,andBlairWalsh,oneofthreenalistsfortheLou

Groza Award as the nations most outstanding placekicker.

The biggest uncertainty on offense is the quarterback posi-

tion. With senior Joe Cox graduating, three candidates will begin

the competition for the starting role this spring: junior Logan

Gray and redshirt freshmen Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberg-

    er.

Sr.), who returns after missing 09 with an injury.

TIGHT ENDS Four returning lettermen should make this a strong point ofthe Bulldog attack. Aron White (6-4, 236, Jr.) had 12 starting

assignments in 09, recorded 13 catches for 198 yards and four

TD, and was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player inthe 2009 Advocare V100 Independence Bowl after his two TD

performance. Other lettermen returning include Orson Charles

(6-3, 230, So.), the teams third leading receiver in 09 with 23

receptions for 374 yards and three TDs; Arthur Lynch (6-5, 250,

So.), who played in 11 games in 09; and Bruce Figgins (6-4,

    games in 07 and 08.

ing unit along with OT Josh Davis (6-6, 300, Sr.), who earned a

starting spot the last part of the season. OG Tanner Strickland

(6-5, 328, Jr.), who is coming off a redshirt year due to injury, will be returning for the fall along with OT Trinton Sturdivant (6-

5, 306, Jr.). Sturdivant started as a true freshman in 07 but has

missed the last two seasons with knee injuries.

The offensive line will also have competing in the spring

    A.J. Harmon (6-5, 310, RSo.), Chris Burnette (6-2, 290, RFr.),

Ben Harden (6-3, 300, Jr.), Jonathan Owens (6-4, 294, RSo.),

Dallas Lee (6-4, 296, RFr.) and true freshman Kolton Houston

(6-5, 270, Fr.), who enrolled in January, 2010. Austin Long (6-5,295, RFr.), who missed all last year with an injury, will not be

ready for spring but is expected to be ready for the fall.

DEFENSIVE LINE/LINEBACKERS With the new 3-4 defensive scheme being implemented, thespringwillbespentdeterminingwhichplayerstbestinwhich

positions. So early on here is a rundown of the players who will

be competing for positions at linebacker and/or defensive line:

Fairly certain to be playing at the linebacker positions will

be returning starter Darryl Gamble (6-2, 250, Sr.) and co-starters

Marcus Dowtin (6-2, 220, Jr.) and Akeem Dent (6-2, 233, Sr.).

Gamble started 11 games in 09 and recorded 47 total tackles.Dowtin started only four games but was the teams third lead-

ing tackler with 57 total tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, two

sacks, and six pass break-ups. Dent also started four games and

recorded 32 tackles. Other likely linebackers include returning

lettermen Nick Williams (6-2, 219, Jr.), Christian Robinson (6-2,

216, RSo.), and Michael Gilliard (6-2, 200, So.). Added to the

mix will be converted tailback Richard Samuel (6-2, 222, Jr.),

who was an outstanding high school linebacker, Akeem Hebron

    (6-1, 223, Sr.), and Chase Vasser (6-3, 215, RFr.).

Returning lettermen that are likely to compete for time at the

three downlineman positions include DeAngelo Tyson (6-2, 294,

have game experience. Also in the mix will be redshirt redshirt

freshmen Kwame Geathers (6-6, 326, RFr.) and Derrick Lott (6-

    4, 295, RFr.).

Several returning players, including two starters, will be

competing for jobs but may or may not be at the position they

covered last season. Justin Houston (6-3, 259, Jr.), a second

team All-SEC selection, and Demarcus Dobbs (6-2, 274, Sr.)

were Georgias starting defensive ends in 09. Houston led the

    team with 7.5

    sacks and 15

    tackles-for-loss

    in addition

    to 39 tackles.

be Jeremy Longo (6-3, 255, RSo.).

SECONDARY Despite losing three starters, the secondary does have eightreturning lettermen to compete in the spring. The lone returning

    starter is cornerback

    Brandon Boykin

    5-10, 185, Jr.) who

    was the teams

    fourth leading

    tackler with 54tackles. He also

Bulldog Spring Storylines: Six Things To Watch

*The Search For A Signal Caller: For the second year in a row, Georgia will have a new quarterback

directing the offense. The candidates for the starting spot include redshirt freshmen Aaron Murray and Zach

Mettenberger and junior Logan Gray after 2009 starter Joe Cox graduated.

*Switching To A 3-4: Todd Grantham joins the Bulldog coaching staff as Georgias new defensive

coordinator and will be installing a 3-4 defense. Grantham comes to the Bulldogs from the Dallas Cowboys

and will be joined by secondary coach Scott Lakatos and linebackers coach Warren Belin. The Bulldogs lost

their three premier defensive tackles in Jeff Owens, Geno Atkins and Kade Weston to graduation.

*Defensive Stars? Along with installing a new 3-4 defense, Georgia lost its top two returning tacklers

after linebacker Rennie Curran and safety Reshad Jones left early for the NFL Draft.

*Questions Linger At Receiver: Junior A.J. Green will headline the Bulldog receivers after leading

the team with 53 catches for 808 yards and six TDs. Tavarres King (18, 377, 1) and Rantavious Wooten (10,

197, 2) are the top returning receivers. Georgia will welcome back Kris Durham to the lineup after he missed

the 2009 season with a shoulder injury. One of Georgias strengths will be at tight end as Aron White, Orson

Charles and Arthur Lynch will be joined by Bruce Figgins, who will be returning after redshirting with an

    injury last season.

*Specializing In Specialists: Georgia features three of the top specialists in the nation. 2009 Ray

Guy winner Drew Butler, 2009 Lou Groza Award nalist Blair Walsh and kickoff return standout Brandon

Boykin all return for the Bulldogs. Boykin set the SEC record with two 100-yard kickoff returns for touch-

downs in the same season and a school-record 988 return yards.

*Who Will Emerge This Spring? Justin Houston is one of the top returning defensive ends in the

SEC after emerging as a dominant pass rusher during the 2009 season. Houston nished third in the leaguein sacks with 7.5 and second in the league with TFLs with 15 in just 10 games last season.

Winning With RichtMark Richt is one of only seven head coaches who has won 90 or more NCAA Division I football game

in his rst nine seasons. His victories in that span include two SEC Championships and 29 wins over ranked

teams. Georgia has attended a bowl game every season since Mark Richt took over as head coach and theteams current streak of post-season appearances stands at 13.

OFFENSEThe QB Race This years spring practice will feature an intense battle for the startingquarterback job between three candidates. Redshirt freshmen Aaron Murray

and Zach Mettenberger will join junior Logan Gray as the candidates to be-

come the starting signal caller. Murray, a former Parade/U.S Army/SuperPrep

All-American at Plant HS in Tampa, Fla., led Plant to the 2008 Florida Class

4-A state title and was named MVP at the EA Sports Elite 11 camp. Murray

(6-1, 206) has been enrolled at UGA since January 2009 before redshirting

last season. Mettenberger (6-5, 230), a product of nearby Watkinsville, Ga.,

competed alongside Murray at the Elite 11 camp and also enrolled early in Janu-

ary 2009. Gray is the only one of the three candidates who has appeared in a

game at quarterback for the Bulldogs. He saw action during the 2009 season

and went 5-of-12 for 31 yards with two INTs. Gray has seen his most action

as a punt returner. In two seasons, he has two punt returns for 70 yards. Gray

has also scrambled 56 yards on 11 carries from his quarterback position during

    those two years.

Offensive Front Becomes A Force In 2009The Bulldog offensive line led the SEC with the fewest sacks allowed.

The unit allowed only 12 sacks

in 13 games for a loss of 96

yards in 2009. During the sea-

    son they started six different

    alignments. Georgia rolled

up 339 yards on the ground

to help knock off #7 Georgia

    Tech and gained 1,216 yards

on the ground over the final

    ve games. Josh Davis began

starting at RT for the Bulldogs

against Vanderbilt after returning from an injury. Clint Boling, who had started

the rst six games at RT as a junior last year, got the nod at LT the last six games

while playing at RG for one game during the middle of the year. He was named

to the 2009 AP All-SEC second team. Georgia started Trinton Sturdivant

(LT), Chris Davis (LG), Ben Jones (C), Cordy Glenn (RG) and Boling (RT)

in their season opener. Sturdivant, who was a Freshman All-American after

starting 13 games in 2007 and then missed the 2008 season due to a left knee

injury, re-injured his knee at #9 OSU and was lost for the rest of the season.

Plenty Of Options At TE The Bulldogs feature one of the deepest and most versatile groups of

tight ends in the country. Aron White started 12 games as a redshirt sophomore

last season and was named the

    Offensive MVP of the Indepen-

dence Bowl after hauling in two

    touchdown passes. He nished

with 13 catches for 198 yards

and four TDs on the year. Orson

    Charles earned Freshman All-

    America honors after appearing

in all 13 games, including three

starts. He ranked third on the

team with 23 catches for 374

yards and three scores. In his

freshman season, Arthur Lynch saw action in 11 games and had two catches

for 17 yards in 2009. The Bulldogs also welcome back Bruce Figgins who

redshirted in 2009 with a shoulder injury. In his Bulldog career, Figgins has

appeared in 24 games, including three starts, with ve catches for 56 yards and

    one touchdown.

Green Gearing For 1,000 YardsA.J. Green nished second in the SEC receiving yards/game (80.8) and

rec./game (5.3) and was named to the AP All-SEC rst team as a sophomore

    in 2009. But after catching

    three balls for 19 yards

    versus #25 Auburn, Green

    was forced to leave the

    game with an injured left

    shoulder AC (Acromio-

    clavicular) sprain at the

    beginning of the second

quarter and did not playversus Kentucky and #7

    Georgia Tech. Green re-

    turned to lead the Bulldogs

in the bowl win over Texas

    A&M after snagging six

    catches for 57 yards. He

    also missed the game with

Tennessee Tech due to a bruised lung that happened against top-ranked Florida

    on Oct. 31.

Greens top performance in 2009 came against Arizona State when he

snagged eight catches for 153 yards and a touchdown. It was his fourth career

100-yard game, and he was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week. He

also blocked his rst career eld goal late in the fourth quarter against the Sun

Devils to help secure the win.

In 2008, Green led the SEC in receiving yardage, yards per game andtied for rst in TDs by receivers. He became the rst Bulldog to lead the SEC

in receiving since Brice Hunter (59 rec.,799 yds.,7 TDs) in 1994.

He also had a ne performance in the win over #7Georgia Tech with six tackles and two tackles for

    loss.

DE Demarcus Dobbs started all 13 games of

2009 at the other defensive end spot and nished

with 30 tackles and 4.5 sacks as a junior. Another

Bulldog to keep an eye on is redshirt sophomore

Cornelius Washington after he gained experience in 2009. He nished with

13 tackles, four sacks and 15 quarterback pressures.

No Dowtin The Bulldog LinebackersIn Georgias new 3-4 scheme, the linebackers will play an important role

in slowing the oppositions offensive attack. The Bulldogs top returning

tackler is junior linebacker Marcus Dowtin. Dowtin registered 57 tackles last

season, including seven TFLs and two sacks. He appeared in 11 games with

four starts. One of those starts came against Texas A&M in the IndependenceBowl as Dowtin recorded a career-high nine tackles to lead the Bulldog defense.

Georgias returning linebackers also include senior Darryl Gamble, who had

47 tackles, and senior Akeem Dent, who nished with 32.

Richard Samuel will be getting his rst try at linebacker after lining up

for his rst two seasons at tailback. Samuel had 395 yards and two touchdowns

on 88 carries and played in 11 games with six starts. He was the Bulldogs

leading rusher for the rst three games of 2009.

The linebackers will have a couple new coaches in Todd Grantham,

who is also the defensive coordinator, and Warren Belin.

New Faces Abound In Secondary Brandon Boykin returns for his junior season to lead the Bulldogs

    youthful secondary in 2010.

Boykin was fourth on the teamin 2009 with 54 tackles and

    three interceptions while start-

ing 12 of 13 games. Boykin is

    the lone returning member of

    the secondary as Prince Miller

    and Bryan Evans graduated

    and Reshad Jones entered the

    NFL Draft early. Redshirt

    sophomore safety Bacarri

    Rambo played in 11 games

for the Bulldogs last season and nished with 25 stops and two INTs.

Also getting snaps at defensive back in 2009 wereBranden Smith and Vance

Cuff. Smith started one game and played in all 13 and in addition to his 14

tackles, he had 17 carries for 211 yards and two scores on offense. Cuff had

21 tackles in 2009 after starting one game and playing in nine. In addition, redshirt sophomore Sanders Commings will be attempting to earn more play-

ing time after playing in all 13 games last year and nishing with 12 tackles

    and one interception.

Mid-year enrollee Jakar Hamilton joined the Bulldogs in January and is

expected to make an immediate impact. Hamilton had 50 tackles, four picks

and eight pass break-ups for Georgia Military College in 2009.

Bulldog Defense Welcomes Three New Coaches Mark Richt retooled his defensive staff following the 2009 season.

Georgias defensive staff in 2010 will be led by defensive coordinator Todd

Grantham, assistant head coach/defensive line/recruiting coordinator Rod-

ney Garner (12th year at UGA), defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos and

    linebackers coach Warren Belin.

Grantham comes to Georgia from the Dallas Cowboys where he was the

defensive line coach from 2008 to 2009. Before arriving in Athens, Grantham

had spent 11 seasons in the NFL but also has had assistant coaching experience

at Virginia Tech and Michigan State.Lakatos comes the Bulldogs from Connecticut where he was the secondary

coach since 2004. Lakatos helped the Huskies have a national ranking of No

9 in pass efciency defense in 2008.

Belin arrives in Athens after spending the last eight seasons coaching

linebackers at Vanderbilt. The 20-year coaching veteran also spent the last

two seasons as the Commodores recruiting coordinator.

Who Will Be The Man In The Middle?Georgias switch to a 3-4 defense puts the spotlight on who will ll the

role at noseguard. The Bulldogs lost their top three defensive linemen in Jeff

Owens, Geno Atkins and Kade Weston. Junior DeAngelo Tyson played in all

13 games last season and nished with 12 tackles. A younger lineman looking

to make an impression is sophomore Abry Jones, who played in 12 games

and had eight tackles and two tackles for loss.

Time For TurnoversIn 2009, Georgia nished 118th out of 120

teams in the Bowl Subdivision with a turnover

ratio of -1.23 . The Bulldog defensive collected

10 interceptions, but the offense threw 17. Re-

shad Jones had four of the 10 interceptions, but

the Bulldogs have Brandon Boykin (3), Bacarri

Rambo (2) and Sanders Commings (1) all back.

Georgia caused nine fumbles but recovered just

two, which was the fewest in the country.

Fourth Quarter DefenseIn the fourth quarter, Georgia surrendered 84 points and scored 83 points

for a -1 margin. In comparison, national champion Alabama was +89 in thefourth quarter. The Tide allowed just 32 points and scored 121 in the nal

period. SEC Eastern Division champion Florida was +52 after surrendering

47 points and scoring 99 points.

SPECIAL TEAMSGeorgia Returns Nations Best Kicking Tandem

Georgia junior punter Drew Butler and junior place-kicker Blair Walsh

rank among the nations best at their re-

spective positions. In 2009, Butler was

a consensus All-American. He was also

the Ray Guy Award winner, which is

given to the nations top punter, while

Walsh was one of three nalists for the

Lou Groza Award, which is given to the

nations top place-kicker. Georgia hadnever won either award before 2009.

    Butler became only the third

Bulldog in school history to lead the

NCAA in punting, joining Zeke Brat-

kowski (1953, 42.6) and Bobby Walden

    (1958, 45.3). Butler averaged 48.1 on

56 punts. Butler and the Bulldogs also

led the NCAA in Net Punting with an

average of 42.0. This was the rst time

since 1969 that Georgia led the country in Net Punting.

Walsh ranked among the best in school history in Field Goal Percentage

for a single season. He drilled 20-of-22 FGs (90.9 percent) in 2009, including

4-of-5 from 50 or more yards. Billy Bennett holds the school record after hit-

ting 13-of-14 (92.86 percent) in 2000. Walsh has also connected on all 92 of

his PATs during his career and was 42-for-42 in 2009.

A Closer Look At Butler In his rst season as a starter, redshirt sophomore Drew Butler led the

NCAA with an average of 48.1 yards on 56 punts.

Butlers big games included a strong showing versus #1 Florida. He aver-

aged 52.5 yards on four punts, including a 61 yarder. His 57.0 average against

#9 Oklahoma State was the second-best average for a game since 1958 (Bobby

Walden, 63.0). Butlers 75 yarder was the longest since Brian Mimbs booted

a 77 yarder in 2008 versus USC. Versus the Razorbacks, Butler booted a 64

yarder to pin Arkansas on its own 9 yard line late in the fourth quarter to help

clinch the game for the Bulldogs. Strangely enough, neither the Bulldogs or

Georgia Tech punted during their regular season nale in Atlanta. It marked

the rst time since the 1986 Duke game that the Bulldogs did not punt. Butler

also serves as the holder for Blair Walsh.

Butler is the son of former NFL standout and Bulldog All-American KevinButler. Butler is on Georgias post-game radio show. Mitch Frix snapped the

ball to Butler during the 1981-82 seasons and now Frixs son,Ty, snaps to Drew

A Closer Look At WalshBulldog Blair Walsh ended up with the No. 2 spot in school history for

eld goal accuracy in a single season. He hit 20-of-22 (90.9%). The record is

13-of-14 (92.86%) by Billy Bennett in 2000.Walshs consistency made him one of three nalists for the Lou Groza

Award. Walsh connected on a 37-yard FG to beat Arizona State as time expired

in 2009. This was the rst game-winning FG for the Bulldogs since Coutu

drilled one from the same distance to beat Vanderbilt in 2007 (also a 20-17

win). Walsh also hit a career-long 53-yard eld goal at #9 Oklahoma State in

2009 and then connected on a 52 yarder versus Tennessee. His kick against the

Cowboys was the longest FG for the Bulldogs since Brandon Coutu connected

on a 55 yarder against UAB in 2006. Walshs FG was the longest on the road

since Hap Hines hit a 54 yarder vs. Kentucky in 1996.

    Walsh Career Highlights

Frix Following In FootstepsTy Frix serves as Georgias starting snapper. Frix, a Biomedical Engineer

ing major, was valedictorian at Calhoun HS. In 2009, Georgia was looking fo

a new snapper after two-year starter Bo Fowler completed his career. Frixfather, Dr. Mitch Frix, was the starting snapper for Georgia in 1981 and 82

and was member of three SEC championship teams, one national title team and

    three Sugar Bowl teams.

Boykin Owns KOR RecordDefensive back Brandon Boykin set the school record for kickoff return

yardage in a single season with 988 kickoff return yards on 38 returns in 2009

    He also had the most

    kickoff returns in a

    season, breaking the

    old mark of 28 shared

    by Gene Washington

    (1974) and Asher

    Allen (2007). Van-

derbilts Warren Nor-man holds the SEC

    record for return

    yardage after regis-

    tering 1,050 return

    yards on 40 returns

    in 2009. Boykin is

    the first player in

    SEC history with

    two 100-yard kickoff

returns for touchdowns in the same season after picking up his second one dur

ing the matchup at Tennessee. Boykin, Norman and Tennessees Willie Gaul

(1980) share the SEC record for KOR TDs in a season with three.

Boykin owns the school record with three kickoff returns for touchdown

in a season. Boykin and Jimmy Campagna are the only Bulldogs in schoo

history with three return touchdowns in a season. Campagna had two punts andone KOR in 1952.

Boykins rst 100-yard kickoff return of the year came against South

Carolina. This was the longest scoring play for Georgia in Sanford Stadium

history. Boykin, who also had an INT in the game, nished with the second

most kickoff return yards in a single game (187), missing the school record by

just three yards (Scott Woerner, 1977, Kentucky).
