To all Mildura 4WD Club Members Present and Past,
We would like to thank you for your kind wishes through this difficult
time. The cards, phone calls, food and thoughts were a great reflection on Doug. He enjoyed the Mildura 4WD Club for the club members and
the trips we went on.
Doug took pride and was always proud to say he was a member of Mildura 4WD Club and encouraged others to join.
I know we will miss him but the memories and stories which not only we
have but our children will let him live on.
One of the projects Doug was glad we were doing was the graveyard at “Bindara” Thank you to all who made this happen. When he was
having treatment he got the energy and travelled up just to check we
were doing it right, he got to see the gate
placed.
Thank you to all,
kind regards Colleen, David, Terry and
families.

Grampians Trip Labour Day Long Weekend
March 6th,7th & 8th 2010 Trip Leaders Terry & Anne Benson Also on the trip were Terry & Linda Curran, Charles Mitchell, Alan Tyers, Peter & Jenny Ricard Day 1, Sat 6th 8.00 am We left Big Lizzie Red Cliffs on time - the weather was cool and showers and thunder storms were forecast. We stopped at Hattah to hook up with the Ricards as they live at Robinvale. We stopped at Hopetoun beside the recently filled Lake Lascelles for a Cuppa. It had been twelve or more years since people have been able to ski on the lake which is about as large as no 1 oval. It was Jumper weather but there were four boats with skiers enjoying the water. Next stop was Stawell for a fuel up and lunch. We then ambled into Halls Gap and stopped at the Brambuk Cultural Centre. We then headed off for the Boreang Camp Ground which is situated in a large valley in the heart of the Grampians. Boreang Camp ground is well off the bitumen road and has a real bush feel to it. The areas are well set up with fire places with room for six or so tents around to cater for groups. We had set up camp by 4pm so out came the drinks and nibbles. There was plenty of thunder to be heard. We cooked our evening meals on the camp fire. As darkness fell so did the rain. It came down as a heavy drizzle. We all fitted under our camper trailer annexe roof and chatted away a pleasant evening.
Day 2, Sunday 7th March.
A bit overcast this morning, we had some rain overnight and it was windy for a while too. Wimmera 4WDembers arrived about 9:30 and we left camp about 10:00—9 vehicles in all—a lot of trees overhanging the SCRUBBY CREEK ROAD. 10:15 we turned into the ROSE CREEK ROAD past the turnoff to the fire dam and within a few minutes were on the HINES TRACK. Brian and Chris from the Wimmera cleared a tree that had fallen across the track and shortly afterward we crossed our first floodway, it had water in it too. 10:30 Brian took us up LAUNDERS TRACK . He was very happy telling us that this is the Wimmera 4WD Club’s training track and they did not leave anyone behind. His knowledge of the track was invaluable. The more experienced members the challenge with gusto, some wanting to go back down and do it over again. They would have been very happy to spend the rest of the day there. Cont’d page 10

After the challenging but very enjoyable Launders Track, Brian took us on a scenic drive through the Grampians. WALLABY ROCK TRACK, ASSES EAR ROAD, BRIMS SPRINGS, where we enjoyed a picnic lunch. It was good getting to know the Wimmera club members a bit better and the sunshine was pretty good too. On the road again, the HENTY HWY, BRIMPAEN ROAD, GLEN …? Crossing on to HARROPS TRACK. We drove through a cypress plantation, not very pretty where the trees had been cut down but the rest was lovely—lots of green. THE GOAT TRACK, SYPHON ROAD, GLENELG RIVER ROAD, the MORA TRACK…. We arrived back at our camp in time for smoko, what a day. The scenery was spectacular with the tracks winding up and down the mountains, the edge of the track disappearing down into the scrub or straight up, so close you could almost touch the amazing rock formations. Watching the wallabies having their breakfast, not at all worried by us being in their backyard was really nice, some of our other neighbours did not enjoy our company as much—must write that down—do not have as much fun around the campfire next time!! Monday 8th March, 2010
Well welcome to Labour Day. The rain looked like it might return so we packed up early and left. We travelled on the same road as we came in on and it did not seem as bad as when we came. Travelling back through town we missed the road for the drive, but it wasn’t the trip leaders fault the map and signs did not match. Terry’s back was recovering after a bad spasm the night before, so when we got to Mount William for the walk to the lookout, we declined. It is a great walk but was cool and slightly wet. We had a nice cup of coffee thanks to Peter and Jenni as I had run out. When they got back it was lunch time and what a great place for lunch. After lunch we headed back and got home shortly after 6pm.

We had great company again, it was a great chance to catch up with Wimmera 4WD
Club, great camping spot, easy/relaxing trip. We would like to thank all those who attended. Linda and Terry
The note left by the on road Mercedes/Fly tent campers. When reading this remember that this is a group camping area; although three were talking til 11.30 it was the group
behind us that were noisy; she never actually approached us in regards to anything in the morning, and had left so we could not respond.
The Note:
I would like to reply by saying that after you left we had the animals return, sorry we
got in the way of them. Jenni you may be more suited to a caravan park where they have quiet time after 10pm. Maybe if you went camping more often you might not have been put off by us. The campgrounds are for the public if you want it to yourself maybe buy some land. LINDA
You seem like good-hearted people – otherwise there would be no point to this note. Whilst everyone has their rights & interests some-
times these can be at cross purposes.
We have travelled 3 – 4 hours to get here – our first camp in about 2 years. We have gone home early because part of our purpose was to get away from noise, neighbours & pollution.
Before you came, we had Kangaroos, deer, possum, kookaburras &
much else. Perhaps such a group would be better suited to a caravan park? I appreciate you have requirements also – but yours ruined our trip.
Please consider
Jenni.

Fraser IslandFraser Island
Lying parallel to Hervey Bay to the visible east is Fraser Island - the largest
sand island in the world being 124 km long and covering an area of 166,038
hectares of sand, laced with fresh water streams and sustaining an astounding
diversity of flora and fauna including the renowned dingo.
The island comprises an amazing variety of landscapes, long surf beaches, cliffs
and gorges in shades of orange, red, yellow, seemingly endless, pure white
sand, dense rainforests, vast, desert-like sandblows, freshwater lakes perched
high up in its dunes, winding streams, great basalt headlands and salt pans with
eerie mangrove forests. Other notable landmarks include the the wreck of the
Maheno, Central Station, Woongoolba Creek, Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and Lake
Wabby.
Fraser Island is the ideal place to escape the
pressures of modern living, marvel at the
sites, kick up your heels and enjoy the nature -
based activities.

123km of white sand, amazing landscapes, ancient rainforests, endless
beaches, freshwater lakes, coloured sand cliffs, coloured gorges, swamps, giant
trees and huge sand blows all combine to present the breathtaking beauty and
diversity that is waiting to be explored.
Access is via vehicular barges, aircraft, passenger launches, commercial tours
or private boats, with the majority of visitors arriving by barge.
Champagne Pools
These naturally formed volcanic rock recreational pools make this a popular salt
water swimming destination. The Champagne pools are situated near Indian
Head. There are timber walking tracks and steps to enable easier access.
The Maheno Wreck
After thirty years of service in Australian waters the Maheno, a huge cruise
vessel, was being towed to Japan as scrap when it hit cyclonic conditions off the
coast and was washed ashore on the 9th July 1935. The past 60 years of waves
and weathering have reduced this once huge vessel to a rusting skeleton but it
is still an imposing landmark.
Eli Creek
Eli Creek is the largest freshwater stream on the eastern coast of the island. It
is an area of exceptional and pristine beauty. There are a number of wooden
walkways and a short, circular route runs up one side of the creek and down
the other. It is possible to swim in the lower reaches of the creek. On a hot day
it is very cool and refreshing.
Lake McKenzie
There are a number of freshwater lakes on the island but the most famous is
Lake McKenzie. Notable for its size, the clarity of the water, the purity of the
white sands on the surrounding beaches and the peacefulness of the area. Lake
McKenzie is an ideal place for swimming and picnics with its clean white sands
and crystal clear blue water.

Lake Wabby
The island's deepest lake which is rich in fish and surrounded by ancient
melaleucas. Lake Wabby is slowly being filled by a giant sandblow.
The Cathedrals
The Cathedrals are coloured sands named because they resemble European
cathedrals. These cliffs have been eroded by both wind and the rain blowing in
off the Pacific Ocean into colourful spires and peaks. The colouration is a result
of iron oxide staining and the colours - red, brown, yellow and orange - are
spectacular.
Fraser Island Great Walk
The 100km Fraser Island Great Walk starts at the historic sand miners camp at
Dilli Village and provides a continuous walking track with facilities from Dilli
Village north to Happy Valley. The walk is divided into four sections. There are
short walks, right up to 2-3 day walks.
Sandy Cape
Sandy Cape is more remote than other areas, located at the northern tip of
Fraser Island. Sandy Cape boasts a lighthouse, located about 7 km south-west
of the cape on a 100m elevated ridge. The buildings have been maintained and
preserved for their historical and cultural value.
Indian Heads and Waddy Point
Indian Head is the most easterly point on Fraser Island and rises about 60
metres from the water. The stretch of beach between Indian Head and Waddy
Point is renowned for the tailor fishing.
The Pinnacles
These are arguably the best sculptured coloured sands on Fraser Island,
although the colours are more subdued than the Cathedrals. The size of the cliff
faces is a reminder of how large the sand dunes on the island are.

Sustainability ~ Sustainability ~ Why we need to build the Sustainable StateWhy we need to build the Sustainable State The Department of Sustainability and Environment is the driving force behind finding new ways of doing things so that Victorians can reduce their impact on the environment and live more sustainably. A prosperous and liveable Victoria depends on a healthy environment. For instance, we need the air we breathe to be free of pollution and the water used by industry and agriculture to be clean if we are to improve health and create jobs and wealth for all to enjoy. These facts demonstrate how intimately our environment and our economic wellbeing are interconnected. In recent years Victorians have made great progress in protecting and repairing our environment. The Victorian Government has already introduced strategies to improve the sustainability of our rivers and reservoirs, forests and cities. We now need to take the next step, which is to incorporate environmental sustainability principles into all the things we do. Victoria's Environmental Sustainability Framework helps Victorians understand the task ahead and how they can best contribute. For the first time, it includes a comprehensive set of environmental quality objectives and interim targets against which our progress can be measured. Victorians should be proud of what we have achieved so far in our efforts to become more sustainable. It is now up to all members of the Victorian community to help turn the directions of the Environmental Sustainability Framework into action. What is sustainability? Sustainability means managing our development so that we don’t limit the options of future generations. It’s about: ♦ doing more with less ♦ making sure we don’t leave the cupboard bare ♦ being proud of what we leave behind. Sustainability is also about a better understanding of the systems that support what we do – and the need to take a broader view to recognise that our day-to-day activities can simultaneously affect our economy, environment and community.
