Greetings from Kaharlyk, Ukraine! This letter is an update on what has been happing in our lives and ministries in Ukraine over this past year. We had pretty extreme weather for Ukraine this year with record snowfalls in the winter and record heat waves in the summer. All the extra snow kept us indoors somewhat this winter and yet life didn't seem to slow down as there was always a bible study to prepare for and a remodeling project to work on. Much of our time this year has been spent working on our house. We've been living in our house for a year and a half now and we've done most of the major remodeling. We look at this remodel as a long-term strategic investment as we want our house to be useful for our ministries here in Kaharlyk. We want our home to be a place where we can build friendships. We want it to be a place where we can have meetings, a place that can be used to serve the church. So we are spending a lot of our time this year trying to get things finished as best we can so that our house can finally be functional as more than just a place we live. Having a house of our own, remodeling it ourselves, and planting a garden has helped us to build deeper relationships with people in our church and our neighbors, many of whom rely on their gardens to make it through the winter financially and who are also remod-eling their houses themselves. In our time in Kaharlyk we have become close friends with people in our church and feel more and more that this is our home. Our church continues to grow and God contin-ues brings people to Himself and save them. One of the greatest encouragements for us this year has been seeing our ministry teams mature and grow in their abilities to serve, their abilities to work together in love, and their desire to disciple others. All in all this has been a busy year for us and we have had to take steps back from certain ministries as we take on other responsibilities. We were able to take a short vacation to some friends’ dacha (cabin) in the woods for a few days this summer where we were able to relax and seek God together which was something we realize that we need to take the time to do more regularly. Married Couples Group In January we started a six week course for married couples. Danny taught about the biblical fundamentals of marriage. We had hoped that most of the married couples in our church would come and were surprised when they all came! We had 10 couples nearly every week. Everyone enjoyed the teaching and fellowship and some of them even did their homework. Pray that God would strengthen marriages.

Rehab Center On Thursdays Danny drives 10 miles to the village of Sloboda to teach a bible study at a drug-rehabilitation center. This winter with all the snowfall there were many weeks that our little car couldn't make the drive. This year we've studied through the books of Colossians, Galations, and I Thessalonians with the guys. It is always encouraging to to see them grow in their ability to think deeply about the scripture, in their knowledge of the bible, and in their physical recuperation. This summer a large group finished their rehab and moved back home to Kiev. Returning back to their lives is always a hard time for them as they still are not sure if they are ready to live without the structure and accountability of the rehab program. Many of them don't make it, and quite a few end up return-ing to the center. Please keep these men in prayer that God would ground them in His word and keep them strong in the face of constant temptations when they return home.

Home Group Wednesday nights are Bible study nights at the Simenenko's apartment. The format is pretty laid back: as everyone shows up we drink tea and hang out, then if someone brought a guitar we sing, if not we share things God has done in our lives and then start discussing Sunday's sermon. If we have time left (sometimes the discussion gets lively) we then study inductively through a section of scripture. Our goal is to have a time of fellow-ship, a place to ask questions about Sunday's sermon, and grow in our ability to study God's word. We took a break for the summer but will resume meeting again this autumn.

Discipleship Group Throughout the spring and summer Danny met weekly with Zhenya, Petya, and Roma, three of the college-age guys in our church, to discuss John Piper's book Don't Waste Your Life, which In Lumine published last year. The book has been a good springboard to talk with these guys about many things that they are starting to face as they go off to college and get jobs and to help them think through the questions they need to be asking as they make life descisions. We aren’t sure which book to read next but the guys all want to keep getting together to learn more about God, doctrine, and God’s will for their lives.

In Lumine For the last couple years Danny has served on the board of In Lumine Media and acts as its in-house art director, web administra-tor, and graphic designer. 2010 has been a busy year for In Lumine. Over the winter In Lumine printed four short biographies by John Piper that had been translated and were awaiting funds to publish. We also printed the first of four in a the series "A book You'll Actually Read" by Mark Driscoll. Both these projects were funded solely by book sales which is one of the goals of In Lumine. We translated Randy Alcorn's Heaven, John Piper's This Momentary Marriage and partnered with a Russia-based publisher to do a reprint of Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology. We've also been translating Sunday School curriculum from Children Desiring God, and a couple workbooks for discipleship and new believers. In December 2009 we launched the website www.pastorjohnpiper.ru with the goal of having a portal of all of John Piper's Russian language material. Over the last few years internet use in Russia and Ukraine has increased exponentially and we want to take advantage of the internet as a way to get solid, God-centered resources to people. We would like to do more projects like this by translating resources from sites such as TheResurgence.com and The Gospel Coalition. These sorts of web sites have the potential to have a huge impact on the Russian speaking church throughout the whole world. Visit www.inlumine.org for more information.

Children's Ministry In February our church held a special event to distribute shoebox gifts from Samaritan's Purse. This is the second year we have been a part of the Samaritan's Purse program and we were able to distribute more than 150 shoeboxes to needy families in Kaharlyk. We decided, like last year, that rather than just hand out the gifts to kids we would have a special event with a puppet show, songs, games, and refreshments. Through the puppet show we told not only the Christmas story but also shared the gospel with the children. The kids seemed to enjoy the event and a few of them have been coming to church on Sundays as well as to Kids’ Club. Last year when we did a similar event, Danny helped to organize and plan the event but this year the only thing he did was play guitar for song time. The children's ministry team recruited various people in the church to plan and execute the whole event. For the last few years our children's ministry team has been helping a church in the city of Zvenygorodka to put on a children's camp. Each year our team has been more and more involved and this year our team organized the whole camp program. It was a big project and our team worked together with the youth group for months planning lessons, games, stories, etc. Our church sent 24 kids from Sunday school, Saturday kids' club, and friends and neighbors who don't come to church. 10 teenagers from our youth group and children's ministry team went to the camp as counselors. This is the first year since we moved to Kaharlyk that I haven't been directly involved in the annual summer children's outreaches/camps. It was very encouraging for me to watch every-thing come together and see how all of these people have grown in their ability to work together, to train others, to organize, to plan ahead without any input. The team took the ideas and principles of teamwork, planning, and relationships that we've been talking about for the last 5 years and put them into practice. Please pray with us that God would save these kids to whom our church has been reaching out this year. Worship Ministry One of the ministries we are both involved in together is the music ministry. Liese has been overseeing the worship team for about a year now. She schedules the worship bands, leads three times a month, fills in for people when they get sick, and finds and teaches the band and the church new songs. Danny plays guitar twice a month and works with other musicians on the team to improve their guitar playing. After spending time praying and talking with the church leadership we decided to split up the time of music so that there would be more time at the end of the service to respond to God in song after the sermon instead of just getting up and going home. The new format has required greater coordination between the worship leader and the preacher, which has been good to build more unity between these two ministries. For Danny sometimes it is more difficult as sometimes it means he has to grab a guitar and play right after preaching for 40 minutes.Ministry to Senior Citizens Each month for the last few years our church has held a special evening for the senior citizens of Kaharlyk. Our goal is simple: provide a place where senior citizens feel welcomed and loved. We serve a hot meal, tea and dessert, provide entertainment, and often pastor Wayne will share a short message from the bible. The spring was a transitionary time for our Senior Citizens’ ministry as Anya, who had been leading the ministry for the last few years, got married and moved away and we decided that instead of having one person take her place that we all would do a little extra and have the ministry team take her place. It has been a fairly smooth transition and we are all learning a lot about how to work better as a team.Funerals In April our church had its first funeral when a lady in our church named Valentina died of cancer. Funerals in Ukraine are full of traditions, whether Orthodox or Protestant, and we are realizing that we need to be prepared to serve grieving families by officiating funerals. Pastor Wayne did the speaking and Danny was there to help out in whatever way was needed. A few weeks later Danny was asked to officiate the funeral of the father of a young man who used to go to our church years ago. Liese organized the music for the funeral.

History of Calvary Chapel Kaharlyk Our church was planted by a group of Australian missionaries in 1997. In 2000 it was officially registered as a church. That same year God miraculously provided for the church to purchase an old sewing factory in the center of town (pictured below). Kaharlyk had been very resistent to the gospel and for the first 6 years. The city government was strongly opposed to any activity we wanted to do. Because of this pastor Wayne began to think of ways to be a blessing to the city by being examples of the gospel in word and deed. Through this God gave Wayne a vision for community transformation through the gospel of Jesus Christ that included community ministries as well as business enterprises to provide jobs, create a work environment where people could grow in their Christian faith, and begin to influence

the corrupt business system of Ukraine. The community ministries such as free English lessons, mowing the city's lawns, computer classes, summer events for children, STD/AIDs awareness seminars in schools along with ongoing ministries in the local orphanages, evenings for senior citizens, humanitarian aid, and helping needy families has changed the way Kaharlyk looks at our church. We have been given favor in the eyes of the city government, who are now for us and are glad that we are seeking to bless Kaharlyk.

About us After going to bible college in Austria we came to Ukraine to be a part of a church plant in the city of Priluki in 2001. In Priluki we served the church in whatever way was needed, served in orphanages, and studied the language with the goal of eventually planting more churches. In 2005 we came to Kaharlyk to pastor the church while pastor Wayne Zschech was on furlough and moved there when Wayne invited us to stay. After a couple years we began to seek God about what our long term goal should be and God led us to stay long term in Kaharlyk to invest in the church here as well as be able to support other churches and ministries in Ukraine. We desire to see the gospel preached and disciples made through-out all of Ukraine and though God has done amazing things in Ukraine over the last 15 years, the majority of the smaller towns and villages lack churches that are actively engaged in preaching the gospel and making disciples. Our goal is to equip our church (and support other churches) to take the gospel where it is not being preached and to build a system of discipleship in those places.
