1RigorRigor asks students to use content to solve complex problems and to develop strategies that can be applied to other situations, make connections across content areas, and ultimately draw conclusions and create solutions on their own.Rigor requires teachers to create a learning environment where students use their knowledge to create meaning for a broader purpose. Review the samples of the technology enhanced items from the Standards of Learning tests and use similar formats in your formative assessments.

#The link to the list of possible prompts for the SOL Direct writing for grades 5, 8, and end-of-course is posted on the English SOL page.Additional prompts may be added to the lists in the future as more prompts become available. These prompts will be used during the spring 2013 administration of the SOL writing assessment.40SOL Writing Prompts41

#The SOL Direct Writing prompt for grade 5 is either narrative or expository.Eighth grade students will respond to an expository or a persuasive prompt.The end-of-course prompts are persuasive.

#The SOL Writing Instruction Checklists are aligned to the Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework. The checklists use the same 4 point rubric as the SOL direct writing assessments. The checklists address the Composing/Written Expression Domain for grades 5, 8, and end-of-course writing. Since the writing checklists are posted in Word format, the checklists can be adapted to fit any mode of writing.
