A Letter from the Director

Dear Friend of McIntire:

With cautious optimism, the Commerce Career Services team looks forward to another recruiting year. Despite fluctuations in the economy and the employment outlook, our graduating students are resilient and one step ahead as they approach their future.

The McIntire School’s ability to prepare students for leadership positions and long-term success is reflected in the Commerce Career Services 2010 Destinations Report, which is again based on a 100% student response rate. You will find details of geographic choices, salary

ranges, top employers based on number of hires, and other relevant information. In gathering these figures, we hope to prove the marketability of our McIntire students, as well as provide you pertinent data that will assist in your recruiting strategy for 2011.

Our goal is to help employers build a strong brand at McIntire and across Grounds. To accomplish this, we strive to anticipate the needs of both students and employers with innovative programs and such services as Corporate Partners and Employer-in-Residence, as well as student treks to key cities. Our McIntire faculty and staff are ready to make your recruiting productive, so let us know how we can help.

The coming year holds many exciting opportunities for our students. Enhancing their global perspective, building on our commitment to giving back to our community, and staying on the cutting edge of technology are top priorities for the 2010– 2011 academic year. In addition, we look forward to providing employers with many opportunities to network with and to recruit our outstanding students. As always, we are grateful for your commitment to the McIntire School and to our students, and we look forward to our continuing partnership with you.

Sincerely,

Tom FitchAssistant Dean for Commerce Career Services

Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University of Virginia, believed a liberal arts education was key to a successful professional career. In keeping with that tradition, students spend the first two years of undergraduate work combining liberal arts and business prerequisite courses. Students, including those from other schools, typically apply for admission to McIntire during their second year.

McIntire students tackle the School’s Integrated Core Experience (ICE), a continuously evolving third-year curriculum that updates and refines the presentation of core business knowledge and skills. The primary goal of the ICE program is to prepare McIntire students for the dynamic, changing realities of today’s business world.

Fourth-year students choose one or more specialized area(s) of concentration: • Accounting • Finance • Information Technology • International Business • Management • Marketing

2010 Analysis by Graduate ProgramMaster of Science in Accounting

The Master of Science in Accounting Program has been recognized nationally for developing graduates with a comprehensive understanding of accounting as well as core competencies needed for success as a business professional. Our 30-credit-hour curriculum offers students the choice between a financial reporting & assurance track and a tax consulting track. Both tracks have been carefully designed to help students acquire not only the necessary specialized technical knowledge, but also a better understanding of the broad context within which professional decisions are made. One-semester students are able to complete the requirements for the Master of Science in Accounting Program during the fall semester by earning credits for specified graduate courses prior to beginning the graduate program. In the Class of 2010, fifty-six percent chose the audit track, while twenty-five percent chose the tax track (the remaining nineteen percent were enrolled in the one-semester program). In the Class of 2011, sixty-six percent chose the audit track, while twenty-two percent the tax track (the remaining twelve percent are enrolled in the one-semester program).
