    Our teachers are chosen for their expertise and pas-

    sion for teaching and learning. Professional collabo-

    ration is an important part of our school culture that

    promotes student learning. As well, CSS emphasizes

    professional development (internally and externally

    supported) to ensure that teachers continue to de-

    liver innovative, effective and highly engaging l earn-

    ing programs.

    The Calgary Science School (CSS) is comprised of

    600 students in Grades 4 to 9 who are drawn from all

    quadrants of the city. Our school vision is to inspire

    passion and innovation within an active inquiry-based

    learning community by bringing learning to life and life

    to learning. It is the goal of the school to have every

    student experience success in learning.

    Strong Core CurriculumInstruction Through Inquiry

    Humanities Develop critical and empathetic responses to rel-

    evant local, global and literary topics

    Mathematics and Science Develop a deeper understanding of scientific and

    mathematic principles, their interconnectedness,

    and their relationship to the world

    Physical Education Engage student minds and bodies in creative

    and critical learning experiences through the

    curriculum, field trips, tournaments, dance and

    other cooperative activities

    Creative Visual and Performing Arts

    Understand the creative world of the artsthrough drama, dance, art, music, band and the

    digital arts using in and out of school expertise

    Integrate the arts with other subject areas

    Establish the relevance of student learning with

    the real world

    Camp trips have included: Fort Steele, Camp

    Sweet, Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, Kanan-

    askis Ribbon Creek Hostel, and other

    Day trips have included: Weaselhead Natural

    Area (nearby), The Telus World of Science, Cal-gary Zoo, Kananaskis Country and other

    Innovative Electives Explore diverse programs based on the interests

    and expertise of the staff and students

    Electives have been: stagecraft, rocketry, Lego

    robotics, environmental education, creative texts

    and textiles, claymation, volunteerism, CO pow-

    ered cars, and many more

    Extensive Technology Resources Current and active technology research with the

    University of Calgary

    A ubiquitous Mac learning environment where

    all students have a laptop computer

    Current computer technology and software:

    iMovie, iWeb, iPhoto, Garageband, etc. School activities include: podcasting, blogging,

    digital portfolios, video conferencing, research

    and other

    Varied Extra-curricular Activities Multiple opportunities for students: debate, sci-

    ence fair, student-led clubs, Girls Leadership,

    school teams, and more

    CSS accesses the funding from this provincially spon-

    sored grant program in order to increase student

    engagement and teacher understanding about how

    to assess, evaluate and report thinking in an inquiry-

    based learning environment with an effort to:

    Develop assessment performance tasks and tools

    Develop student exemplars (examples of stu-

    dent work as models)

    Continue to develop portfolio assessment pro-grams

    Alberta Initiative forSchool Improvement (AISI)

    Learning Strategies A learning strategies program is built into the

    school time-table to focus on specific student

    learning needsOur Educational Foci are the Following: The science of learning through inquiry-based

    Authentic engagement through the core subjects

    multi-day outdoor education experiences

    A One-to-One Computing Project in a Mac envi-

    ronment
