School
(i.e. K-8; Literacy, Numeracy, Pathways, CCCC)
SMART Goal :
St. Nicholas of Bari Catholic School
Focus : Literacy / K-8
20102011School year:
Specific
We have found that writing, gathering and organizing ideas, is a noted area for improvement. The identified area of concern was determined based on analysis of DIP data 2009/2010. For example, 60% of grade three students are achieving a level two in writing, and 57% of grade six students are achieving a level two according to EQAO results 2009/2010.
Measurable
Success will be measured by: -Term one and two report cards - EQAO results 2011 -Comparing student writing samples over time (Term 1/ Term 2)
To increase student performance in writing by 3% as measured through primary and junior EQAO assessments in May 2011, and report cards.
We will examine our indicators of success on an ongoing basis to detemine if we are making our intended progress of need to further develop and refine our SMART goals. We will achieve this through moderated marking of student journal samples by our SIT team and ongoing assessment of writing samples by classroom teachers.
Evaluation:
Results- Oriented
The following resources will be used to help us in achieving desired results: -Comprehensive Literacy Handbook -Literacy in the Middle Grades -Premier Assistive Technology -Graphic organizer booklet (journal prompts included) -A Guide to Effective Literacy Instruction -Education For All: The report of the expert pannel on numeracy and literacy instrucion for students with special education needs -common planning time (teachers sharing ideas) -Fifth Block -Literacy Resource Teacher support (Fatima Formariz)
Timeline
-Ongoing 2010/2011 school year
Attainable
The strategies that will help us are as follows: -Daily timed writing integrated into the Literacy Learning Block *Primary-10 minutes timed writing *Junior-15 minuters timed writing -Teacher modelled timed writing concurrent with student timed writing -Increase focus on generating, gathering, and organizing ideas within the writing block -Compile a booklet of graphic organizers to be used within writing blocks -Students will have a designated timed writing notebook -Special Needs Students will use assistive technology (Premier) -"On Your Mark " program as offered by "Working Women" -writing conferences with students -show students examples of high quality responses --verbal rehearsal/story telling -use on demand journal prompts (variety of fiction and non-fiction prompts) -teacher modelled writing -ESL visuals incorporated

The following opportunites are planned to help us attain our goal: -daily individual classroom activities/assessments (10 minutes of mental math per day) -focus on "The Big Ideas" in mathematics -use pre-assessments from ONAP -TLCP's -access to manipulatives -encourage students to express their thinking in writing -model complete solution processes -provide opportunities for students to connect addition with subtraction and multiplication with division -provide all students, especially IEP and ESL learners to work in group settings to promote discussions and effective communication of their mathematical thinking
Specific
-The area of Number Sense and Numeration will be targeted for the students in Kindergarten to grade 8. -Focus on mental math (K-2-addition and subtraction, 3-8-multiplication and division) The identified area of concern is based on DIP data (Report Cards). According to the 2009/2010 term two and three report cards, about 50% of grade four, five, and six, students achieved a level one or two in Number Sense and Numeration.
Measurable
-Individual classroom assessments -Teacher observation of mental math activities -Term 1 and Term 2 report cards (Number Sense and Numeration) -EQAO (Mathematics results)
To improve students' Number Sense and Numeration skills by 3% as measured by report card data for Kindergarten to grade 8 June 2011.
