DENVER AREA
Happy 2010, Rocky Mountain Book Workers!
Denver region members attended a re-scheduled gathering in December. The weather cooperated this
time, and the group enjoyed a show-and-tell of recent works and attended the Marketing 101 presen-
tation at Abecedarian Gallery. Thanks again to Alicia Bailey and Abecedarian Gallery for hosting the
event, and thanks to all who participated.
Daniel Kelm presented a well-attended and informative workshop in late January. See the workshop
review in this issue. Thank you, Daniel, for sharing your expertise and experiences with us for a great
weekend.
Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, Julie Chen will not be coming to the Denver area this spring
for a workshop. We will continue to look for opportunities to bring her, as well as other presenters, to the
area in the future.
Please contact us with your ideas for upcoming presentations, workshops, and events. We would love to
hear from you.
Have a great spring! -Ginny Kilander ([email protected]) & Sammy Lee ([email protected])
SALT LAKE CITY AREA
The Rocky Mountain Chapter (Utah) recently held a workshop with Tini Miura. Several members of our
chapter attended and the feedback that I received from the workshop was excellent I think that every-
one in attendance felt that they truly learned tooling and onlays. We especially got to focus on gold tooling
with gouges with an emphasis on decorative line patterns and tooling on the edges of leather onlays. The
Guild of BookWorkers exhibitMarking Timeis currently on display at the Utah Book Arts Program. I was
very impressed by the books that were exhibited. If you havent seen them yet please take the time to go. -Ethan Ensign ([email protected])

The International Edible Book Festival began in 1999 as a Thanksgiving Day joke among a group of artists& has become an international event in over sixteen countries worldwide. The idea is simple, if wacky: Each
year around A pril Fools Day, artists of all ages & abilities construct books out of edible materials & putthem on display, then at tea-time, they consume their creations, often joined by the public.

Dear Friends- In the summer of 2007 my daughter Zo and Iwere working in Malawi Africa with El Puente-Mlatho, a non-profit organization dedicated to supportingeducational programs in underdeveloped countries. El Puente-Mlatho has transported over 10,000 pounds of
used reference and textbooks into Southern Malawi.
I had been invited to help the students at the Mlambe II Primary School, 30 km outside the city of
Blantyre, create a mural for their new library. We worked with school children on the mural in the mornings;
in the afternoons I taught a book art class for the local women.
As we worked in the new library, Zo and I observed thatmany of the books that had been delivered to
the children at the Mlambe II Primary Schooldid not translate into their culture. With money left in the art
supply fund, we had hoped to purchase locally published childrens books; unfortunately, we learned
childrens books are not produced in Malawi.
In March I will be returning to Blantyre, Malawi to help create a limited edition artists book. I will be
coordinating several groups for a collaborative effort a local handmade paper mill; artists; a writer or poet;
a letterpress printer; and students from the University of Malawi to help print and bind the book.
The book will be a simple native folk tale that children can read, focusing on the art and culture of
Malawi. The text will be letterpress printed in English and Chichewa (Malawis dominant Bantu language)
on indigenous handmade paper. Illustrations will be printed using wood or linoleum cuts and the edition will
be hand bound. The production of the book will take place sometime in the spring of 2011. The completed edition will be sold in the U.S. and Europe through book
dealers specializing in Artists Books, and the revenue (along with grant funding) will be used to publish a trade version of this book in Malawi. The books will thenbe distributed to school libraries across the country.
When I return from Malawi, I will apply for teaching and materials grants and form a non-profit organization to continue supporting the project. Our ultimate
goal is to create a self-sustaining organization in Malawi to continue to create artists books to be sold in the U.S. and Europe, to generate funds for the indigenous
publishing of books for the chi ldren of Malawi.
Alicia McKim holds an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Colorado, Boulder. During her 26 years as a studio artist, she has exhibited and sold her work
internationally. Her books can be found in such public collections as the Getty Research Institute, the Printing and Graphic Arts Collection at Harvard University
and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. She currently teaches Book Art
and Typography at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.
Regardless of the amount, your contribution is very important and deeply appreciated.
For a contribution of $100 or more Alicia is offering a gift of a letterpress printed, hand bound limited edition book
that will be completed upon her return from Malawi.
Please make checks payable to St. Andrews Church and note Malawi on the check

A Reviewby Pamela Leutz
Daniel Kelms Workshop
Concertina Spine Sewn on Tapes
January 23 & 24, 2010
Denver, Colorado
Daniel Kelm came to Denver from his home in Easthampton, MA to teach
this class to the Rocky Mountain Chapter. In Easthampton, Daniel runs a non-
profit book arts school, The Garage Annex School, next to his studio, The Wide
Awake Garage. He has combined his extensive experience in fine binding and his
scientific mind (he is also a chemist) to create innovative bookbinding structures
that are sleek and cool looking, but also function really well. The concertina struc-
ture we learned in this workshop included a wire imbedded in the spine edge of
the covers, providing a secure way to attach the tapes to the cover and ensure asmooth, flat opening. In this binding each signature is nested in a concertina fold.
The case with the concertina folds is completely assembled and finished before the
final step of sewing the signatures into the concertinas. The folios are not subject
to adhesives or to bending. It is a great binding for heavy paper folios, or for any
book that you want to open completely flat. The concertina folds between signa-
tures can also serve as spacers, making it good for accommodating photos, col-
lages, or letters on the pages.
The atmosphere in Daniels class was peaceful yet stimulating. His teachingstyle encouraged thinking, questioning, learning. Students gathered around as he
demonstrated steps. He asked many questions of students, encouraging students
to think why things are done certain ways and therefore, providing a cue for them
to understand the process and remember how to do it in the future a Socratic
kind of learning. Daniel encouraged students to bring in their own books, so we
were given the opportunity to see each others work and share our stories. A great
workshop experience!
