The Last Waltz – a Musical Celebration of The BAND have been consistently selling out venues throughout Southern Ontario and beyond with an all-star line-up, and a trip back in time where you can relive the atmosphere of The Band’s final concert, which was captured in Martin Scorcese’s award-winning concert film, The Last Waltz. If you missed them at Mariposa or the Beaches they have a couple more shows this month - August 3 at Pelham/Fonthill Bandshell and August 11 at the Kitchener Blues Festival

An all-star Canadian cast of award-winning blues and roots musicians will perform a celebration of The Last Waltz - The Music of The Band. Under the direction of producer and musical director, Lance Anderson, this crowd pleasing show which has sold out shows in Peterborough, Orillia, Collingwood, Peter’s Players in Gravenhurst, and at Hugh’s Room in Toronto also headlined the Southside Shuffle, Wasaga Beach Blues Festival and Kitchener Blues Festival.

This smash hit show has toured the country for the last six years and just finished a headlining performance at the Mariposa Folk Festival where they received rave reviews from many for their set.

Featuring Jerome Levon Avis (Levon Helm’s godson), Chuck Jackson (Downchild Blues band), Johnny Max, Matt Weidinger, Quisha Wint and a 9 piece band led by Lance Anderson (piano) and other special guest singers, their performance will recreate the atmosphere of The Band’s final concert.

On the American Thanksgiving of 1976 at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom, The Band performed what they called their “Last Waltz,” and invited many of their friends to join

Honouring the legendary BAND's

Last Waltzin the celebration. These friends included Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, Neil Young and others who performed with The Band on this special night.

In this homage to The Last Waltz, Anderson’s special guests will perform the songs played and sung by these artists at the memorable 1976 concert.

“What makes this performance special is the connection these musicians have to the music,” says Anderson. “They love the music and perform these tunes from the heart.”

Avis’ dad, Bill Avis was The Band's road manager from the early days with Ronnie Hawkins through the Bob Dylan years, right up until The Last Waltz. Bill was especially close to Levon Helm and he has a wealth of stories about times on the road with The Band. Dennis Pinhorn is an ex-Hawk, who joined Ronnie Hawkins some years after The Band left to tour with Dylan. And Anderson himself produced a piano and vocal recording, 'Live at the Wolf', with Garth Hudson, The Band’s mercurial genius on the organ.

Anderson’s production of The Last Waltz has experienced rave reviews at the many festivals where it has appeared over the past few years and has consistently been referred to as the “best of the festival.”

“It wasn’t just the musicianship, which was second to none; it was the energy – these musicians have brought forth a live music gem that is worthy of any stage I know of and probably more that I don’t,” said P. Rellinger of the Kawartha News after seeing Anderson’s show in Peterborough.

The Band is a Canadian national treasure, with four members of the legendary roots music group originally from southern Ontario. In the 1960s, they were initially brought together as “The Hawks” by Ronnie Hawkins and later gained international recognition as Bob Dylan’s band on his groundbreaking electric tours. This two hour tribute performance of The Last Waltz

includes a wide selection of fan favourites, such as The Band’s ‘The Weight’, ’The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down’, ‘Up On Cripple Creek’, ‘Life is a Carnival’, ‘The Shape I’m In’, ‘Rag Mama Rag’, ‘It Makes No Difference’, 'Ophelia' and many more.

‘The Last Waltz – a Musical Celebration of The BAND – Live" which celebrates the 41st Anniversary of the historic concert and film with an all-star Canadian cast of award-winning blues and roots musicians makes a memorable musical experience and a loving tribute to this ground-breaking, iconic BAND.

And the Festivals Keep on Coming: As we sit in the middle of blues festival season, the best is yet to come. It's certainly worth a drive to Kitchener Aug.10-13th to take in one of Canada's largest blues festivals with top Canadian and International blues stars like The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer, The Sheepdogs, Booker T., Steve Strongman Band, Bobby Rush, Paul Reddick, David Wilcox, Lucky Peterson, catl, Shawn Kellerman, Lurrie Bell and tributes to the "Last Waltz" and Etta James.

The Southside Shuffle features mostly Canadian talent (a nod to Canada 150 celebrations) like Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Jack de Keyzer, and of course Downchild doing the traditional closing concert as well as a few "themed" events like a Canadian Blues All-Star Band featuring Chuck Jackson, Jack de Keyzer, B.A.R.K and Harpdog Brown, “Lady Sings The Blues” with Dawn Tyler Watson, Suzie McNeill, Suzie Vinnick, Jenie Thai and Ginger St. James. The "Piano Rama" workshop will feature Kenny (Blues Boss) Wayne, Tyler Yarema and Jenie Thai.

Keith Sharp of musicexpress.ca did a comprehensive overview of two of the biggies, Kitchener Blues and Southside Shuffle and spoke to both of the principal organizers. "Both Claude Cloutier’s TD Kitchener Blues Festival and Chuck Jackson’s Port Credit Ontario based Tim Horton’s Southside Blues Shuffle have been mainstays of the Canadian Blues Festival Scene and both report that interest in blues music is stronger than ever as they prepare to execute their events which both have a strong Canadian theme considering this country is currently celebrating its 150th birthday. Cloutier, about to celebrate Kitchener’s 17th year and his 11th year in charge is aware that it is a yearly challenge to inject his lineup with fresh talent but claims new artists are appearing annually as some of the established blues artists pass on.

“Our festival is always going to be a blues festival, there will always be a foothold in that musical style,” he noted, acknowledging that other existing blues festivals are blues in name only as they attempt to boost interest by adding Country, Pop and R&B artists. “There’s a definite pushback from our audience when we have tried to spice things up. But there is such a wide interpretation of what is blues. I mean every classic rock band contains some elements of blues in their material and many established rock artists are releasing blues records as a spin-off.”

Chuck Jackson, lead vocalist of Downchild Blues Band, and Artistic Director of the Southside Shuffle says, “I travel all over the world with Downchild and I have to say that Canadian Talent is just as good as anything else I have seen,” Jackson enthuses. “It’s always great to be able to showcase new talent like Paul Reddick (Juno award winner) these are the people that are going to allow Blues music to continue to grow.”

Introduce someone to the Blues...via their stomach: Throughout summer and its passing into harvest time, collaborations between gourmands and musicians popping up around Ontario may prove the ideal platform to spark a love for live music in others. Undeniably, annual Ribfests have long since given Blues artists exposure; for many a fan they were a little taste which later developed into a healthy appetite for live blues music. Today, venues ranging from farming co-ops to winery concerts hosted by local culinary superstars, offer a wide appeal. Here are some highlights from our concert listings page: Aug 13 - Jack de Keyzer at Hy Hope Farms in Ashburn (farm fresh market and orchard, baked delicacies, live music patio); Aug 25 - Blackie & The Rodeo Kings at Jackson-Triggs Amphitheatre in Niagara (wine & light fare surrounded by vineyard); Oct. 29 - Ken Whitely Gospel Brunch Sunday at Hugh's Room Live, Toronto. And of course there's regular servings of Blues and delicious food at the Mississippi Queen's Southern Suppers in Hamilton (Steve Payne - just in from UK plays on August 17th) and the Cove Inn's popular Buffet & Show in Westport (kicking off their 13th season on September 22 with Angel Forrest).

Violet's not shrinking: Blues fans in Barrie and environs are rejoicing at the return of high-profile blues shows in first-class venues. Bruce Maltby had announced last November that he would not be presenting any shows for a while but that he would be back and he was good to his word. Violet's Venue is presenting British blues guitarslinger Matt Schofield at The Park Place Theatre on August 19 followed by Rick Derringer at Gayety Theatre on August 26, Roy Rogers at the Park Place Theatre on September 16 and the Alexis P. Suter Band at the Simcoe Street Theatre in Collingwood, on September 30. Details at www.violetsvenue.com

Harp Players Take Note: The first Global Blues Harmonica Summit, a day-long interactive webinar, takes place on Saturday, August 12, beginning at 8 AM Pacific Daylight Time. If you have a good internet connection, you can participate from anywhere in the world. For a modest fee, you'll get lectures on "improvisation" by four of the biggest names in contemporary blues harp distance learning: Ronnie Shellist, David Barrett, Adam Gussow, and, from the UK, Tomlin Leckie. Congratulations to Canada's "Sweetheart of Swing,",Alex Pangman (pictured with hubby/bandmate Tom Parker), who has been inducted into the The Mississauga Music Walk of Fame. A fellow Women's Blues Revue alumna, Liberty Silver and Canadian Music Industry pioneer Randy Lennox were also honoured at a reception at Port Credit Memorial Park. The event has traditionally been part of the Southside Shuffle weekend, and this is the first time it took place outside the Port Credit music festival weekend. The Juno-nominated Pangman has released more than a half-dozen albums throughout her career. She got her start at the tender age of 14 singing at the Suisse Marmite Restaurant and Tavern in Port Credit and has a passion for jazz of the 1920s and ‘30s. She was born with cystic fibrosis and has been a fierce advocate for organ donation. Past inductees into the walk of fame include luminaries such as Ronnie Hawkins, Gil Moore, Billy Talent, Oscar Peterson, Denny Doherty, Tommy Hunter and Jeff Healey, among others. com where you can subscribe to his monthly newsletter and see some amazing video clips of Roly Platt and Mike Stevens from the recent Harmonica Workshop at the Shared Harvest farm in Dunville. Adam (from the legendary duo, Satan and Adam) had some nice things to say about the Canadian harp players: "Beware of the Canadians, for they be true badasses, and modest men, too." Gussow's website offers custom-made harp-player T-shirts, video lessons and lots more. www.modernbluesharmonica.com

Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes Cursed Self

The Bad Luck Woman is Raha Javanfar, one multi-talented artist, with one foot in the music world and the other in the theatre. She’s of Persian heritage and is classically trained in that tradition. She has a foot in the folk world here too as a fiddler in a western swing band and as the singer, bass player and bandleader here. They specialize in the songs by obscure and sassy ladies of the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s. The band won the Grossman’s Amy Louis Scholarship last year and just placed as first Runner Up in our Talent Search Finals last month. As you might guess, this band isn’t a full time thing for Ms. Javanfar but perhaps it should be. She has the coy and sassy part down cold as she rocks through Memphis Minnie’s “Bad Luck Woman” or Julia Lee’s “Spinach Song (I Didn’t Like It The First Time)”. Or try her version of Ella Johnson singing “No More Love” or Big Maybelle’s “That’s A Pretty Good Love” - fine renditions all. The one original, “Take Our Time Together” isn’t quite up to the level of the songs around it but presumably that will come. Her Misfortunes are Fraser Melvin on guitar, Jay Swinnerton on piano, Andrew Moljgun on sax, Tom Moffet on trumpet and Jonathan Hyde on drums. Adam Beer-Colacino on guitar & Galen Pelley on drums guest on three songs – it isn’t just the excellent vocals here, the whole band knows how this music should be played. They have regular gigs at The Dakota Tavern and the Local Pub. The web site is www.badluckwoman.com.

Trickbag Live: North End Ramble Self

After a rather long hiatus on disc the veteran Hamilton band Trickbag is back (Not to be confused with an American band of the same name). They got their start backing

12 BeLowZero 12<0 Self

For blues bands actually based in Cottage Country instead of just visiting, we have The Mackenzie Blues Band in Owen Sound and Tobin Spring in Huntsville to name two, but there is now also 12BeLowZero, based in & around Port Elgin. With a classic blues lineup of guitars/harmonica/keys/bass/drums, they have come up with eleven songs that convey a bleak picture of life in Bruce & Grey Counties especially during the winter – no doubt leading to the band name. They’ve set these songs to an attractive variety of tunes, with only the opening “Highway 21” using an obvious starting point, channeling Elmore James’ “Dust My Broom”. That highway runs along Lake Huron from Sarnia through Tiverton to Owen Sound. “Things Go To Hell (And I Go To Church)” is a rather graphic depiction of a failing marriage. On the same theme and equally good is “Wasted, Blown Or

Missed”, this time refering to the chances he had to do right. The disc’s highlight is “Bruce County Blues”, summarizing the entire album in just over four minutes. It’s got a rocking groove carrying along some excellent lyrics. A slow blues, “(I’m Not About To Risk My Heart On) Someone Like You”, is almost as good. “Washing Line Blues” and “Whiskey Soured Weekend” are as good as their titles suggest. “Blues Song Blues” is about writing a blues song, with some clever use of well-known song titles. Christina Mollon is the vocalist with Aaron Johnston on guitars; Tim Eaton, harmonica; Dave Glass, bass and Steve Ballard, drums. Ballard & Glass are the principal songwriters. A producer behind the glass might have requested another take or two of some of the songs and Ms. Mollon is not quite as good a singer as the songs require. A few more gigs should help a lot but for a first album, this is a very good start indeed. The web site is www.12belowzero.bandcamp.com.

King Biscuit Boy and three of the original members are still going strong: Larry Feudo on guitar & harp, Donna Panchezak on vocals & percussion and Paul Panchezak on drums. The current lineup features two new members: Rick Miles on bass and Steve Beach on B3, piano & vocals. They assembled at This Ain’t Hollywood in Hamilton and recorded this impressive new album and promise a new studio one soon. The program opens with a feature for the new B3 player: “The Cat”, the Lonnie Smith hit. Donna Panchezak shows her vocal chops on a fine version of Irma Thomas’ “You Can Have My Husband (But Don’t Mess My Man)”. Another local hero, Robbie Robertson, is celebrated with his “Rag Mama Rag”, with Beach joining on vocals for their version of Band harmonies. Feudo adds some wonderful slide guitar and there’s a lovely uncredited mandolin. Donna Panchezak’s solid vocal on Don Covay’s “Three Time Loser” keeps the pace going nicely. Beach shows how he handles a slow blues as they perform an extended version

of Keb’ Mo’s “Dangerous Mood”. This is an excellent song from Keb’s Just Like You that I don’t think anyone else has covered until now. Feudo turns in a masterful lead guitar break. Feudo also supplies the one original song here, the instrumental “Walk The Talk” with brief solos for all. In an especially tasty tribute to their roots, they do “Corinna Corinna", a song they clearly still enjoy doing and conclude with another song from Richard Newell’s set list, “Hoy Hoy”, a Johnnie Jones classic from Chicago in the early fifties. Beach & Donna trade the vocal duties in glorious fashion on this rousing finale. Crowbar has also reunited for a summer festival tour, doing a King Biscuit Boy tribute as part of their show. John Dickie & Ray Harrison have joined original members Sonny Bernardi, Roly Greenway and John Hibbard. It’s good to see Richard Newell so well remembered. Trickbag play regularly in & around Hamilton, check www.trickbag.ca for listings and if you’re not going to see them any time soon, you can get the CD at CDBaby.

Martin Goyette Big Beets Ad Litteram/Select

This Montreal-based vocalist/songwriter/harpist was first runnerup in our Talent Search in 2006 and showcased at the Blues Summit the following year. He released Sweet Warm Jelly in 2013. He continues the food theme with Big Beets. Guitarist Jim Bland opens the program in fine fashion with a reverb-laden solo before the band kicks in on “St. John Morning Blues”. Goyette’s whiskey-soaked voice conveys this morning after tale far away from home quite remarkably. Chris Tauchner, on piano here, adds a great deal, as does the intimate recorded sound. Jarrod Atkinson is on bass & Louis-Etienne Drouin, drums. Goyette’s raspy voice takes a little getting used to, sort of like Screaming Jay Hawkins or Captain Beefheart. “Night Out” is also on a common theme but well written & sung. “Mirza” is the one song in French and a cover, by Nino Ferrer, but here it is a straight-ahead blues, with some fine harp work. That stylized vocal continues for “Rolling”, an otherwise very good song about a rambling life. When he feels rushed he likes to sit back with a “Bottle of Champagne (And A Seafood Platter)” – an attractive, funky tune. “That’s The Way She Does It” has an attractive melody & groove – a jazzy song about love from a distance with nice harp & electric piano. “No More Room” seems to be about information overload, an almost tempoless blues. There are a couple of jazzier tunes, “As Long As We’re In Town” & “Free Love”. He concludes with “Unwind”, an ambitious & lengthy slow blues - a plea for love with a chorus singing harmony and more harmonica than he’s played so far. His web site is www.martingoyette.com and it shows he doesn’t leave Quebec often but he did take part in the Hommage à Bob Walsh in Québec at Festival d’Été de Québec on July 16.

Cash Box Kings Royal Mint Alligator/Fontana North/Universal

Take four accomplished younger players and add one veteran vocalist – it’s a recipe that worked for Anson Funderburgh and

the Rockets featuring Sam Myers and it has been repeated successfully since. The Cash Box Kings was formed in Madison WI in 2001 by harmonica player Jay Nosek. South Side singer Oscar Wilson joined in 2007. There have been eight albums since and this is their first for Alligator. Besides Nosek and Wilson the current lineup is Brad Ber on bass, Mark Haines on drums and Joel Paterson on guitar. New member Rie “Lee” Kanehira is on piano & organ. Guests for this recording include Billy Flynn, Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith and a horn section. They call their sound ‘Old School Chicago Blues” and with some lesser known covers and very good originals, they most certainly do exactly that. Amos Milburn’s “House Party” is a rousing lead off song. Jimmy Reed’s “I’m Gonna Get My Baby” gets a fine performance, that Jimmy Reed sound is not nearly as simple as it sounds but they nail it. Muddy’s “Flood” also gets a loving treatment, Wilson has obviously done Muddy many times in his career. Kanehira may be from Japan but she clearly knows her Spann. Nosek’s clever “Build That Wall” might be too clever by half, his rockabilly commentary on political sloganeering just might have the opposite effect – listen carefully. He does show himself to be a very good singer also. Wilson’s “Blues For Chi-Raq” is another very good 12-bar about the violence in his neighbourhood. The band takes a break for a country blues as Wilson does RJ’s “Travelling Riverside Blues” with just Paterson on electric slide – a treat. Wilson & Nosek wrote a delightful “If You Got A Jealous Woman Facebook Ain’t Your Friend”, our narrator is busted once again because she checked his Facebook page. Junior Wells’ “I’m A Stranger” gets a mention here too because it’s a Junior song that is not well known, this version should change that. Wilson goes way back in style for “I Came All The Way From Chi-Town”, an excellent country blues with just Paterson & Nosek. Clifton Chenier’s “All Night Long” brings the tempo roaring back up with group vocals and horns. “Don’t Let Life Tether You Down” concludes, a Nosek vocal on a Piedmont-style feel good song. This is a highly recommended disc of old school blues with great songs, a variety of styles and excellent playing, one you can buy with confidence. The web site is www.cashboxkings.com. This grouping has been very prolific of late with discs by Oscar Wilson & Lee Kanehira also available. Kanehira’s Union Meeting features all the players on Royal Mint. Wilson’s One Room Blues features Joel Paterson on a program of standards that heads in a jazzier direction.

A word from Elwood Blues: Greetings Citizens,Elwood Blues, your musical chauffeur, here.

The BluesMobile began life as the House of Blues Radio Hour, way back in 1993. Over the years we moved from the house to the road, but the mission was always the same: showcase the best in blues, blues-rock, roots music, R&B, soul, jazz, straight up rock… and all points in between.

I put the spotlight on new releases from old favorites and newbies. I played the crusty, the fresh, the seasoned, and the raw, featuring wide-ranging interviews with the musicians themselves, and many live in-house concerts, recorded exclusively for the BluesMobile.

I now give thanks to the stations, the sponsors, affiliates, producers, managers, agents, and all those hard workers who put the “business” in show business, and bigger thanks to all the players and fans who keep the show going. This series, alas, has gone as far as it can go. Our final broadcast will be July 30, 2017.

There is a crossroads dead ahead. Twenty-four years is a long time without a turn. We may turn left, or right, but we will no longer go forward. Time for a new direction, a new road. For us, the end of this one.

And so we leave you to your journey. Please tip a cold one for us before you continue on your way. Watch our tail lights as we vanish in the distance, then get back to it.

Remember: The blues never dies. It will never run out of road. That road goes on forever. And thanks for riding along.

Yours, Elwood.
