The word Dhrishti means Vision/ insight / to focus. But, it also is most commonly used to define what is popularly known as the evil eye. The belief in the evil eye or Dhrishti dates back to many centuries before the Christian era. Belief in the evil eye namely that a human being can cause injury or death through a malevolent glance or stare or even a thought is a very widespread one, found in ancient Greek and Roman literature and in the Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Islamic, and Hindu traditions. In some forms, it is the belief that some people can bestow a curse on victims by the malevolent gaze of their magical eye. The most common form, however, attributes the cause to envy, with the envious person casting the evil eye doing so intentionally or unintentionally. Also, the effects on victims vary. Some cultures report afflictions with bad luck; others believe the evil eye can cause disease, wasting away, and even death. Such Dhrishti can be due to bad thoughts against someone, the

casting of spells, demonic possessions etc. The ominous power of Dhrishti can be subtle or immense depending upon the depth of negative emotions. Stronger the emotions greater will be the energy released. This energy can work at the material level and at the psychological and physical level. An evil-eye cast on others possessions like wealth, property, and other accessories can consequently deplete the victims of their resources. The 'hale and hearty' suddenly succumb to ill-health, or happiness and peace of mind is lost. These are some of the nasty effects of Dhrishti. Witchcraft, black magic etc. are advanced manifestations of Dhrishti.

During intense meditations, Divine Mother Parashakthi revealed that major damage from Dhrishti is caused by cosmic forces or cosmic devatas. Some of these cosmic forces are Asuric or Demonic elements who affect our life pattern and activities by random fall of their asuric or demonic cosmic vision made worse by our own planetary weakness and susceptibility - thereby causing the Dhrishti effect on us. Asuric/ Demonic Dhrishti are thousand fold more harmful than any human Dhrishti.

It is traditionally believed that there are many ways by which such malevolent effects of Dhrishti can be removed. The wearing of specific amulets/ charms, wearing a red colored string, the painting of a black spot on the face, chanting specific manthras, performing Homa, breaking coconuts, squeezing lemons, cutting winter melons etc. are some of the mechanisms believed to ward of Dhrishti. The Divine Mothers Dhrishti peedam which is proposed to be consecrated at the Parashakthi Temple blesses us with the protective energy of Arishtanemi, who along with Indra, Poosha and Brihaspati, is the third level of transcendence from the Divine Mother. This energy & vibration is purely protective in nature, and will protect not only us devotees, but the whole word from both Asuric Dhrishti as well as human Dhrishti, which we are more susceptible to in this year of the enemy (Virodhi Nama Samvatsaram). In the process of eliminating Asuric Dhrishti, the Dhrishti caused by humans (commonly referred to as evil eye) will be easily eliminated, thus providing maximal protection to all of us.

In Kerala, at the Chottanikkara Bhagawathy Temple, there are two main shrines. In addition to the main shrine, there is another shrine east of the temple pond called the Keezh Kaavu. The Vigraham facing west is believed to have been installed by Vilvamangalam Swamiar. People afflicted by mental and physical diseases throng this sannidhi and pray here. Witnessing the great puja called Valia Guruthy (Great sacrifice) here is believed to permanently cure devotees suffering from

  • 4 schizophrenia and other effects due to Dhrishti. The Dhrishti peedam at the Parashakthi Temple is analogous to the Keezh Kaavu of Chottanikkara.

The Parashakthi Temple Dhrishti Peedam: It was the wish of Divine Mother Parashakthi that we should provide a place for helping our devotees to ward off the ill effects of any Dhrishti. In other words, a place where all devotees can go and worship Bhagawathy and get her blessings to be freed from material, physical and psychological ill effects due to any form of Dhrishti. Thus, this Dhrishti Peedam is meant to be a Dhrishti Parihara Sthalam (place). Accordingly, the three peedams were placed without consecration in the North eastern area near the Yaga Shala wherein various devatas were invoked during the Yagna performed during the Vigraha installation ceremonies. The Dhrishti Peedam, along with the original Chottanikkara Bhagawathy Vigraham will be ritually consecrated on Sunday, Oct 25, 2009 from 9:10 AM - 10:20 AM in Shukla Paksham, Amritha Yogam. Thus, we are fortunate to have Divine Mothers protection for the whole world through the proper installation of the Dhrishti peedam through proper ritualistic consecration at the appropriate time which was chosen by Mother Parashakthi. We are fortunate in receiving so many boons and benefits through the Divine Mothers kindness. SHE has become a personal goddess guiding us and providing us the needed protection at various levels. But receiving and consuming the Grace depends on our level of sacrifice. Hence, Devotees are encouraged to sponsor the event and participate to the best of their abilities. The proposed location of the Dhrishti peedam is the location originally proposed as the site of the Parashakthi Temple. Obviously, it is the divine wish of Mother Parashakthi to give Darshan to Her devotees as Chottanikkara Rajarajeswari in the proposed Dhrishti Peedam at the same location chosen initially for the Temple. Dhrishti Parihara Worship: Devotees may directly go to the Peedam, pray silently or contact one of our priests to perform special Parihara Pujas. In addition, devotees can support Her temple by volunteering their services through participation in various committees, administrative support services, maintenance work etc and through monetary support to maintain and improve facilities at the temple including the building of the proposed Temple Raja Gopuram and various Sthapathi activities. The support given by devotees will enable us to achieve our mission which is To share Divine Mothers Grace with all of humanity so that they can Explore and Experience the Divine. By such supportive activities and through prayers at the Dhrishti peedam, we can ward off any ill effects caused by asuric or human Dhrishti.

Rahu transits from Makaram to Dhanur Raasi and Kethu from Katakam to Mithunam at 15:47 Hrs EST (Michigan time zone)

Program Details: 10:00 AM: (Sukra): Maha Ganapathi Homam (For Kethu Preethi), Durga Sukta Homam (For Rahu preethi) and Navagraha Homam. 11:30 AM: Poornahuti. 04:00 PM: Rahu-Ketu abhishekam, Archana, Arathi. 07:00 - 7:30 PM : Rahu- Kethu Archana for devotees who cannot attend the earlier functions The shadow planets Rahu and Kethu will transit from Makaram to Dhanur ( Sagittarius) and Kethu will move from Katakam ( Cancer) to Mithunam ( on October 27, 2009. Rahu and Kethu are not true planets. They represent the asdcending and descending lunar nodes and in Vedic astrology they represent the head ( Rahu) and body( Kethu) of an asuric element . They are not independent planets like the sun, moon. Mercury, Mars etc. They are at all times at opposite points of the zodiac like the head and tail. They indicate the precise point of the harmony with the three most important influences in our life- the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. This relationship plays an important part in the enfolding of individual consciousness. They're unique in the sense that they're always transiting retrograde, indicating Karma from previous lives. Rahu & Ketu are the mysterious unseen points in space causing the eclipses. As they symbolically eclipse the Sun (consciousness) and the Moon (the Mind), they have a great part to play in darkening our perspective in order to bring in new lights. They are next in importance to the other two planets -Jupiter and Saturn. These four are the slowest moving planets and require maximum attention when they are in transit. Although the Sun does not move, it appears to move when viewed from the earth. So, the apparent path of the Sun through the Zodiac is called as the ecliptic because eclipses are caused when the path of the moon around earth intersects the path of the Sun in the ecliptic. The Sun takes 365 days to complete one circle of the Zodiac whereas the moon takes about a month to go around the earth / Zodiac. Full moons ( Pournami)

and New moons ( Amavasya) are caused when ever the moon over takes the Sun in the ecliptic. But, if the path of the Sun and Moon in the Ecliptic intersect, the points of intersection are called as nodes as shown below and eclipses are caused when this happens.

In Hindu Astrology, the North Node is given the name Rahu and the South node is given the name Kethu. As they symbolically eclipse the Sun (consciousness) and the Moon (the Mind), they have a great part to play in darkening our perspective in order to bring in new light. They deal with the concept of death and re-birth, transformation and regeneration. During the eclipses the light from the Luminaries is darkened. The energies created are powerfully psychic, pregnant with new information and occult power. The period after the eclipse is considered a rebirth of the Sun and the Moon. The role of Rahu-Kethu in this powerful alignment of the Sun Moon and the Earth gives them the role of the ultimate controllers of the destiny. The prime importance given to Rahu Kethu in Vedic Astrology is one of its key features. They have been given the status of Planets to emphasize their significance and the importance placed on eclipses. They are known as Chhaya Graha (shadow planets). They have no substance and are physically non-existent. Yet their influence is full of potency and spiritual significance. They work in unison 180 degrees apart, two opposite points in the zodiac with a mission to churn our lives in order to externalize hidden potential and wisdom. In keeping with their shadowy nature, they work on a psychological level. It is always difficult to gauge their effect because their main concern is with our emotional makeup. They affect us internally. We are unaware of what exactly is happening to us at the time. In Vedic Astrology, the concept of the Soul's journey through different lifetimes is central to it. The final goal of the soul is to break this cycle of life and death. Like the beads on a necklace, various lifetimes are joined

  • 8 17 together to form a necklace, each life being different but interconnected by an invisible thread. The invisible thread is Rahu and Kethu. The purpose of the soul in this life to act out his given Karma, destroy the illusions of the materialistic life and move towards the pursuit of self realization. To live on the astral planes where pleasure and pain do not have the capacity to hurt, the mind is still and at peace. The soul's journey in a particular life time and its connection with eternal life is indicated by the position of Rahu and Kethu. Kethu deals with the past Karma and Rahu with the future. The five instincts that keep us attached to the materialistic purpose of life are Kaama (Desire, passions) Krodha (Anger) Madhya (intoxicants- drugs, alcohol etc) Moha (Attachment) Lobha (Greed) and Matsaya (Jealousy). We need to control our instincts rather than allowing ourselves to be controlled by them. Both Rahu and Kethu have the ability to keep our mind focused on these instincts- Rahu by exaggerating and Kethu by obscuring or blocking. We are tied down to the cycle of unhappiness and dissatisfaction as we cannot break away from our lower selves. We are born again and again to experience the pleasures and pains of the earthly life until we recognize them to be the illusions that they are. On a subconscious level we are afraid that if we give up these desires, we will lose out. Rahu-Kethu deals with the inner fight within us, the moral and the social choices we have to constantly make and the inner dilemmas Rahu and Kethu both stay in a particular Raasi for a period of 18 months. Unlike the other seven planets, both Rahu and Kethu do not own any of the twelve Raasi houses. However, when they are positioned in a particular house in the natal chart, they take on the benefic or malefic aspect of the particular planets ( graha) that are located in that particular house. Rahu and Kethu are not two entities. They are the two parts of the same demon Swarbhanu who was an Asura. This Asura was born to Sage Kashyapa and the Asuri Simhika. During the churning of the Celestial ocean by the Devas and Asuras using mount Meru as the spindle and the serpent Vasuki as the rope used for churning, several objects came out of the ocean including Amritha the liquid of immortality. The Amritha was to be given only to the Devas but Swarabhanu disguised himself as a Deva and stood in line to drink the Amritha. The Sun and Moon pointed out Swarabhanu as an imposter and as a result, Mahavishnu chopped off the head from the body of Swarabhanu. Eventually due to a previous boon received from Brahma, the Head and body did not die. The head attached itself to the body of a snake becoming Rahu and the body part got attached to the head of a snake and became Kethu. However, since

the Sun and Moon had pointed out Swarabhanu to Mahavishnu, both Rahu and Kethu considered the Sun and Moon as their enemies. Thus, the concept of eclipses was connected to the swallowing of the Sun and moon by the Rahu-Kethu and their eventual release. The above story is a symbolism whereby the churning of the ocean can be related to attempts to gain knowledge or Gnana by getting the products immersed in the ocean of the ultimate truth. Incidentally, it may be added here that water is used as a purifying agent in all religions the world over. Gods and demons have always existed side by side, each fearful of the other and each struggling for existence and supremacy over the other. Churning of the ocean for taking out the gems was to have the secrets of life and of the manifestation. The Mt. Sumeru is nothing but our spinal cord. The nectar that appeared last of all was nothing but the secrets of life and death and the way to liberation. The serpent used as a rope to bind the mountain is the wise man, perhaps, under whose guidance the operation should be undertaken. In short the churning of the sea is nothing but awakening and activating the Kundalini/ Serpent power. The person who detected the demon was Moon who represents an illumined mind. Only an illumined mind can distinguish between good and bad. Head is the governing portion of the entire body and the experiences and the knowledge deposited in the lower portion of the body cannot be utilized by a headless man. In fact, knowledge of truth and being one with it are two different things. Even the secret knowledge of truth provides the knower with many Siddhis and accomplishments which may be used as well as misused in the daily affairs of life. Chopping off the head means a separation of the governing part of the body from real truth. Role of Hanuman: Hanuman during his childhood days flew towards sun, as it appeared to be a big fruit. The day was solar eclipse day, when Rahu was supposed to swallow sun for a while. Hanuman saw Rahu (Head) flying around in space and was attracted to the head and caught Rahu. Rahu unable to escape from the clutches of hanuman cried for the help, and Hanuman released Rahu at the request of the Sun god and Indra. On another occasion, during the Rama - Ravana war, Ravana collared the Navagraha as prisoners. Hanuman released the Navagraha from Ravana's clutches. The Navagraha blessed Hanuman with the words people devoted to you are blessed by all of us. Thus Rahu's negative influence as well as all other Graha Dosha (malefic influences) will be reduced when we worship Lord Hanuman. Rahu-Kethu Transit Implications: Rahu will transit from Makaram ( Capricorn) to Dhanur (Sagittarius) and Kethu will move from Katakam (Cancer) to Mithunam(Gemini) (on October 27, 2009 in an anti-clockwise

  • 10 fashion ( retrograde). Dhanur raasi is lorded by Jupiter ( Guru) and Mithunam is lorded by Mercury (Budha). The chart in the next page shows the location of Rahu and Kethu in the Raasi chart along with the different influenzes of Saturn. In general, Rahu and Kethu in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses are considered to be benefic whereas, these grahas are considered to be malefic if they are located in the houses 1,2,4,5,7,8,9,10 and 12. The houses are numbered from 1-12 starting with your Raasi which is house number 1. For example, people born in Meena Raasi would have Rahu in the 10th house and Kethu in the fourth house. See below for definition of Lagna and Raasi. However, a good prediction can only be made after considering the location of all planets in the Natal chart and after considering the relationships among the planets (Friend, enemy, neutral), Dhrishti, Avastha,Exaltation, debilitation, Dasa etc of the planets. Dasa: In addition to the transits it is also essential to know the Planetary Dasa of an individual. Thus, Kethu rules for 7 years and Rahu for 18years. Lagnam and Raasi Defined: The position of the Rising Sun at the time of Birth is calculated by Astrologers and that is your Lagnam. This will be indicated in your birth chart (jathaka). Sun is the Athma Karaka and is responsible for your soul.

The position of the Moon determines your Raasi. Each Raasi is associated with specific padas (quarters) of very specific Nakshtras. Meena Raasi contains all 4 padas of Uthrattadhi and Revathi but only the 4th pada of Poorattadhi. The other three Padas (1-3) of Poorattadhi are assigned to Kumbha Raasi. Thus, individuals must know not only their Nakshatra but also the Pada in which they were born in order to establish their Raasi.

Rahu Kaalam: Rahukaalam or the period of Rahu is a certain amount of time every day that is considered inauspicious for any new venture according to Vedic Astrology. Rahu Kaalam lasts for a period of 90 minutes each day. To calculate Rahukaalam, the time between the sunrise and sunset is divided into 8 units or time-groups, For each weekday, Rahukaalam falls as under: Sunday - 8th Muhurtha (Unit) Monday - 2nd Muhurtha Tuesday - 7th Muhurtha Wednesday - 5th Muhurtha Thursday - 6th Muhurtha

To calculate Rahukaalam, the time between the sunrise and sunset is divided into 8 units or time-groups, For each weekday, Rahukaalam falls as under: Sunday - 8th Muhurtha (Unit) Monday - 2nd Muhurtha Tuesday - 7th Muhurtha Wednesday - 5th Muhurtha Thursday - 6th Muhurtha

the Sun and Moon had pointed out Swarabhanu to Mahavishnu, both Rahu and Kethu considered the Sun and Moon as their enemies.

By such supportive activities and through prayers at the Dhrishti peedam, we can ward off any ill effects caused by asuric or human Dhrishti.

casting of spells, demonic possessions etc.
