A VERY SPECIAL ISSUE: THE 2009 ANNUAL REPORT

Executive Director: David M. Pittenger

A s we usher in Spring 2010, we are pleased to share this very special issue of

Watermarks. Each year, we publish an annual report that encapsulates the successes of the previous year. This year, we folded our annual report into Watermarks, allowing us to share these milestones and accomplishments with all of our most vital supporters. Through membership, volunteering, or financial or in-kind donation, you have invested in the National Aquarium, and we are excited to show you what your support enabled us to accomplish in 2009.

In addition to those stories, we have some-thing exciting and new to share. In a tough economy, the National Aquarium continues to evolve. Part of our growth has been in strengthening the relationship between our two venues in Washington and Baltimore, and this year we are proud to announce another way we are knitted together as one organization: beginning June 1, Aquarium membership benefits will expand to include both National Aquarium venues, regardless of where members originally purchased their membership. This single membership means “Baltimore” members can freely visit our

NH: Each show adds new behaviors and visualeffects, but Our Ocean Planet also communicatespowerfully on conservation, expanding on the special connection visitors make with our dolphins. It explains how human behaviors on land affect the world’s oceans.

NA: What do you hope visitors will take away from the show/exhibit?

JC: We want everyone to be fascinated by jellies for their ethereal beauty and how they have survived for millions of years amidst environmental changes that have negatively affected other forms of aquatic life.

NH: We hope people have fun and remem-ber how they can contribute to keeping the dolphins’ world cleaner.

NA: Have you made changes to the show/exhibit since it opened last year?

JC: Occasionally, we have to change display species when seasonal jellies are unavailable. Some species, such as the upside-down jellies, reproduce on exhibit, so visitors can now see tiny babies.

NH: We’ve seen people really connect with the dolphins and the new messages. We’ll continue to keep it fresh and fun, while we communicate these important lessons.

E arly in 2009, there was a lot of activity atthe National Aquarium’s Baltimore venue

as everyone worked to debut a much-anticipated changing exhibit—Jellies Invasion: Oceans Out of Balance—and the first new dolphin show in five years—Our Ocean Planet. Both were due to open in the spring and each required a tremendous amount of time to plan, developand launch. Hundreds of Aquarium employees and volunteers from nearly every professional discipline were involved in some aspect of one or both of the projects.

Luckily, there were two Aquarium veterans leading the efforts long before the openings. General Curator Jack Cover was collecting jellies species for more than six months before the exhibit was unveiled. Senior Director of Visitor Experiences Nancy Hotchkiss began exploring concepts nearly two years before the dolphin show was ready for primetime.

National Aquarium (NA): What was the best part about developing a new Aquarium exhibit/show?

Jack Cover (JC): Changing exhibits focus ona specific group of animals, so I have learned a great deal about the biology and life histories of jellies, as well as recent changes in world jelly populations.

Nancy Hotchkiss (NH): The brainstormingat the beginning is always great. And watching our first group of visitors delight in a dolphin’s new jump, splash or spin is a gratifying moment.

NA: What was the most challenging part about developing a new Aquarium exhibit/show?

JC: Jellies display and cultivation is a special-ized field. We had to quickly assemble an experienced team, custom-made tanks and a culture lab to keep and breed jellies.

NH: Having dolphins in our aquarium is a privilege and responsibility we take very seriously. So when everyone gets together, there are a lot of great ideas on how we can communicate on their behalf. Selecting just a few is difficult.

NA: What were the initial building, staff and/or animal considerations?

JC: A lot of infrastructure had to be added to the space prior to exhibit construction, and all work had to be done without disrupting the dolphins in the same building!

NH: We had to prepare concepts, scripts, animal behavior lists, lighting and video elements. Before training our cast of 10 animals, we had to look at their social groupings and behaviors.

NA: How is this show/exhibit different from previous ones?

JC: Our first jellies exhibit focused more on the animals’ beauty and mystery. Jellies Invasionhas more diverse species and delivers a strong environmental message.

included a sustainable menu and the musical stylings of Jamey Turner, as well as welcoming remarks from Discovery Channel’s Philippe Cousteau and entertainment by Sherman’s Lagoon cartoonist Jim Toomey.

In 2003, the National Aquarium Society and the National Aquarium in Baltimore formed an alliance to establish the National Aquarium, Washington, DC. Once teamed up, the nation’s first aquarium underwent an extensive $2M makeover to re-emerge in 2008 as a true tourist destination in the nation’s capital. Last year, despite a struggling economy, the attraction’s improvements and affordability ensured its best year of attendance since 2002. “2009 was a remarkable year for the DC venue,” said Perry. “Nearly 194,000 visitors came to discover our baby alligators, two baby loggerhead turtles and 250 other species. At SeaQuest, we toasted momentum and shared our exciting plans for the future with everyone who has supported and helped this Aquarium to thrive.”

By the close of the fun-filled celebration, the DC venue had engaged more than 100 friends in its next quest—an exciting new space for the National Aquarium, Washington, DC!

SEAQUEST: F INDING AMERICA’S AQUATIC TREASURES National Aquarium board celebrates future plans for nation’s first aquarium

T he goal of this quest was to find their finaldestination: 30,000 square feet of raw space,

complete with detailed renderings of some of the 30 planned Aquarium exhibits and photos of the vibrant aquatic creatures that will inhabit them.

“This is such a great way to introduce our friends, colleagues and relatives to ourAquarium family,” said Bill Perry, chairman of the board of the National Aquarium’s Washington, DC venue, as he led one group for a sneak peek at the venue’s bigger, brighter future. Slated to open in 2015, the reconfigured Aquarium will have a larger footprint, dramaticdisplays and a prominent entrance on Constitu-tion Avenue facing the Washington Monument and the National Mall.

The SeaQuest event gave DC board members their first opportunity to introduce guests to the space in the Commerce Building that the National Aquarium will remodel to expand its collection of America’s Aquatic Treasures™ andimprove its visibility in the nation’s capital.Together with friends of the Aquarium, they celebrated a successful year for the attraction, and had a preview of what is to come. experience for out-of-town visitors, as well as activities that appealed to the local community. Campaign advertising featured giant dinosaurs towering over the Baltimore skyline and iri-descent jellies hovering like flying saucers on a post-apocalyptic horizon. A dedicated web site gave visitors updated information about special ticketing options, retail and restaurant discounts, hotel packages and special events around the Harbor throughout the summer months. The “invasion” continued through Labor Day when Chinasaurs closed.

The promotion was an unmitigated success. Overall summer attendance at the Aquarium was strong, coming in approximately 13 percent above projections. Bookings at area hotels were driven by special packages, multiple events brought area residents and tourists to the waterfront and ticket sales for Chinasaurs doubled the projected numbers.

The two attractions are already brainstorming with fellow waterfront partners about oppor- tunities to join promotional forces again this summer. “The Maryland Science Center and the National Aquarium are both family-friendly venues that anchor the Inner Harbor as a destination,” explains Cropper. “Combining our efforts and working with other organiza-tions to offer entertaining and educational summer activities is a win-win for everyone.”

• The Waterfront Invasion campaign received an Award of Distinction from the International Downtown Association and the Industry Partnership Award from Maryland Tourism and Travel Summit.

• More than 874 room nights were booked through Waterfront Invasion packages.

• Waterfront Invasion local and national media coverage reached 23,385,771 people.

• Waterfrontinvasion.com received 54,782 unique visitors and 237,000 page views over four months.

Partnership Power

WATERFRONT INVASION Dinosaurs and gelatinous sea creatures joined forces in Summer 2009

As a world-class entertainment attraction, the National Aquarium is constantly innovating, pushing exhibit design in new and interesting directions to expand its visitor offerings and finding creative ways to communicate about environmental challenges.

In Summer 2009, the Aquarium took a new, highly successful and award-winning

approach to launching its latest exhibit. Both the Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center were invaded by prehistoric predators that offered fearsome fun on and around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. It was due to a unique partner-ship between the two attractions and fellowBaltimore waterfront businesses that includedVisit Baltimore! (then known as Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association) andBaltimore’s Waterfront Partnership to promoteseasonal visitation. Together, this strategic alliance conquered the summer heat with a fun, science-fiction-inspired promotion that gave an auspicious launch to two new exhibits.

The “Baltimore Waterfront Invasion” began Memorial Day weekend when the Aquarium

opened Jellies Invasion and the Science Center opened Chinasaurs: Dinosaur Dynasty, which featured more than 20 dinosaur skeletons in the largest touring exhibition of authentic Chinese dinosaur fossils. The campaign also included family-friendly events and activities and “invasion” décor around the Inner Harbor. The effort marked the first time the organi-zations pooled resources to create a promotion encompassing two popular attractions. “It was a great collaboration that galvanized the waterfront and offered a truly unique experience for families visiting the Harbor for the first time,” said Chris Cropper, senior director of marketing for the Science Center.

The partnership amplified promotional efforts, both locally and regionally, and maximized individual budgets to offer a complete travel

S chools of fish aren’t the only schools at the National Aquarium—thousands of

hungry learners from hundreds of Maryland and Washington, DC schools visit the two locations each year. For them, a trip to the Aquarium is like attending a fun underwater school for the day. And in any school—even an underwater one—there are teachers dedicated to filling eager minds with knowledge through engaging activities that spark the imagination.

The National Aquarium’s Education Depart-ment is an enthusiastic group of teachers who share their expertise in environmental science and marine biology through curriculum-based lessons in the Aquarium, in classrooms around the Chesapeake Bay watershed, in structured home school programs and in teacher work-shops. These educators spent much of last year leading programs at the Aquarium venues and inside classrooms—as well as more than 130 days hands-on in the field—working with nearly 34,000 students and teachers from 177 area schools.

SWIMMING TO SCHOOLSThe education team travels to area schools throughout the year to reach children from preschool to high school. Bringing the Aquarium into the classrooms and offering personal attention and close contact with Aquarium animals and artifacts adds adventure to the children’s science lessons. Through educational activities, stories, labs and inter-active presentations, these programs teach children about ecology and aquatic habitats and inspire future aquarists and biologists. Last year, 13,445 Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania students participated in National Aquarium outreach programs.

For students whose classroom is at home, the opportunity for hands-on discovery is particularly valuable. More than 400 students and parents took part in the Aquarium’s home school programs in 2009.

UNDERWATER LESSONSChildren are intrigued by the unique character-istics, colors, shapes and sizes of animals. A trip to the Aquarium is a feel-good day for them to observe animals in naturalistic habitats, and for many children, it’s their first time seeing such creatures. These visits are opportunities to learn more about world ecosystems through presen-tations, encounters with live animals and tactile scientific investigations in discovery labs at the Aquarium venues. Last year, 8,832 students from 220 schools connected with the aquatic environment through these programs.

VIRTUAL KNOWLEDGE, NATIONAL REACHIn 2009, through a partnership with Baltimore’s K-12 Connections Academy, the National Aquarium used web-based teaching to reach an estimated 10,000 students in more than 14 states with environmental and conservation lessons.

EDUCATIONAL ENTERTAINMENTAn impressive 10,500 people attended National Aquarium Cultural Series events held at both locations last year. Asian-Pacific Heritage, African-American Heritage, Women’s History, Latino Heritage, Native Cultures and Holiday Traditions celebrations incorporate the arts into an aquatic theme.

Baltimore City and County high school students who participate in the year-long, work-based learning program Aquarium on Wheels immerse themselves in the Aquarium’s daily operations and get a behind-the-scenes look at a rewarding career path. The program blends science and the performing arts through after-school study ses-sions that teach students about aquatic organisms, cooperative skills and teaching techniques. Then these talented apprentices take their show on the road with two aquatic-themed original plays. During 2009, 22 students performed for nearly 2,000 people at 16 Enoch Pratt Libraries.

MUDDY HANDS, MUDDY BOOTSThe National Aquarium AquaPartners program teaches lessons in an outdoor classroom, using the Chesapeake Bay as a context for learning. Last year, program leaders took 1,200 students from 11 Baltimore City schools to locations around the Chesapeake Bay—getting their boots in the water and hands in the earth to discover the plant and animal life in our local ecosystems.

The National Aquarium’s Henry Hall Endowment Fund offers Baltimore City middle school, high school and college students exciting summer excursions and career opportunities. The program also supports college students with paid internships to work at the National Aquarium’s Baltimore venue and provides one-year, $1,000 college scholarships for engineering, biology, environmental science and aquatic science studies. In 2009, 13 students monitored sea turtle nests and explored beach and marsh habitats in Georgia; 63 more students in the program participated in six other aquatic conservation programs in four states.

National Aquarium awarded more than $7,000 in college scholarships to 12 Aquarium on Wheels and Henry Hall program graduates in 2009. To date, more than $400,000 in scholarships has been awarded through these programs.

“The National Aquarium has seen children transformed by experiencing nature. Aquarium programs create connections with the aquatic world that pique kids’ curiosity and create lasting enthusiasm for this world they will inherit.”

– David M. Pittenger, National Aquarium executive director, during remarks to media at the “No Child Left Inside Act of 2009” press conference on Capitol Hill.

are guiding those projects; the actions they take to preserve vital ecosystems for our children and future generations; and by the opportunities for our communities to get involved and become environmental stewards.

“Oceans of Inspiration” also introduced me to Aquarium educators who are engaging Baltimore County and Baltimore City youth in those ecosystems. These enthusiastic professionals lead kids into moments of discovery that many otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience. For many of these kids, field trips to the shores of the Chesapeake with the Aquarium are the first time they’ve ever left the city. It sparks their imaginations of a future beyond the city limits. Learning about Chesapeake Bay watersheds and wildlife creates a lasting impression, changes how they look at the world and inspires them to make a difference.

I enjoyed my time at Oceans of Inspiration and encourage everyone to attend one of the sessions. I am proud of my association with the National Aquarium and the work it does in our city. I look forward to our continued partnership as we work together for a healthy and vital Baltimore.

In 2009, more than 100 people attended Oceans of Inspiration sessions. The National Aquarium thanks individuals who pledged $115,890 in support or committed in-kind goods or services. See page 10 for upcoming “Oceans of Inspiration”dates in Baltimore and “America’s Aquatic Treasures” in Washington.

I was born and raised in Baltimore. As a kid, I can remember the excitement surrounding

the Aquarium’s opening in 1981. It was a symbol of pride for our city, and a beacon of hope for the restoration of our waterfront. For more than two decades, the Aquarium has galvanized urban renewal and been an economic anchor for the region. It is Maryland’s number-one tourist attraction, generating millions in tax dollars and tourism revenue. As a public servant and a city resident, I am thrilled with the support the Aquarium brings to the city’s economy, tourism trade and the resource it is to our schools.

Since 2003, I have had the pleasure of serving on the National Aquarium Board of Directors. In November 2009, I had the opportunity to attend a session the Aquarium calls “Oceans of Inspiration.” This informal, one-hour discus- sion with Aquarium leaders was an eye-openingevent that gave me a personal connection that I hadn’t previously experienced. Hearing the stories of the young lives that have been affected by the National Aquarium’s education programs, seeing the acres of Chesapeake Bayhabitat it’s restored and preserved and observ-ing the standards of excellence in its animal care programs gave me a new perspective on this cherished Baltimore icon.

This session helped me see beyond the Aquarium’s status as a successful attraction, because it gave me a front-line view of its behind-the-scenes world. As the title promised, I was inspired by the initiatives the Aquarium is undertaking as a global conservation orga-nization; the biologists and ecologists who

T he National Aquarium’s status as a world-class entertainment attraction is apparent

in our award-winning exhibits, the health and vitality of our animals and the smiles on the faces of children and adults alike as they come face-to-face with our tens of thousands of animals throughout four buildings in two cities.

The Aquarium is equally committed to educa-tion and action on the aquatic environment, and for more than 10 years has put this value into action through programs, projects and partnerships that affect positive change. The Aquarium’s passionate and knowledgeable staff leads restoration projects to protect and manage critical species and ecosystems, teaches conservation education through programs focused on environmental action, monitors and aids wild populations of threatened or endangered species and hosts breeding programs that improve populations of those same species for other zoos and aquariums.

“The National Aquarium has the unique capacity and responsibility to lead essential conservation programs and to increase public awareness of these issues,” explains National Aquarium Conservation Manager Laura Bankey.“As habitats are destroyed or degraded, the diversity of species and the complex relation-ships between them are threatened, with consequences for all living things—including

humans. We use our voice and our influence to change that.”

Bankey depends on two committed groups of environmental stewards: the Aquarium Conservation Team (ACT!) manages and organizes the numerous details involved with field work to restore and preserve Chesapeake Bay marine life and coastlines, and the National Aquarium Internal Conservation Committee (ICC) identifies ways to “green” Aquarium facilities, encourages Aquarium employees to reduce, reuse and recycle and aligns with like-minded organizations to achieve those “green” goals.

“The Aquarium views every new project as an opportunity to reduce our environmental impact,” explains Jennifer Aiken, 2009 chair

The National Aquarium was one of nine finalists in the Baltimore BusinessJournal’s 2009 Green Business of the Year award. The Aquarium was acclaimed for the leadership of its Internal Conservation Committee and active staff participation in internal sustainability programs.

Stewardship Stories

TO THE RESCUE Aquarium employee is an agent of global conservation

H aving made this excursion each summer for four years, she knew exactly what to

look for: dorsal fins breaking the water’s surface as groups of dolphins made their way along the coastline. “People love dolphins and often don’t realize that what we do on land affects their habitat,” explained Dittmar. “Seeing dolphins at the Aquarium and in ocean settings really helps people make that connection.”

Aquarium employees and volunteers along 26 miles of Maryland coast recorded their dolphin sightings on tally sheets. These

conservation agents reported 344 dolphin sightings to Dittmar, as she worked with the Ocean City Station of the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure a safe and successful event. “The data from the annual dolphin count contributes to scientists’ long-term understanding of dolphin populations and reproduction rates, and the Aquarium actively participates as part of our global conservation initiatives,” she said. “It’s a very physical way people can get involved with the health of our oceans.”

The dolphin count was one of many Aquarium conservation efforts that found Dittmar on the beaches last year. As stranding coordinator for the National Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Program (MARP), she is the first responder when a call comes about stranded, hurt or out-of-habitat animals. In 2009,

On a warm and overcast morning in July 2009, Jennifer Dittmar, the National Aquarium’s stranding coordinator, guided 12 volunteers to the Atlantic near Ocean City for Maryland’s annual dolphin count.

Dittmar and the hard-working team of 70 MARP volunteers responded to 56 calls regarding marine mammals or sea turtles, nine of which were brought to the Aquarium for rehabilitation. Among those were four endangered sea turtles, including a logger-head turtle that was admitted with nearly 10 pounds of barnacles, blue mussels and sea grasses living on and permeating its shell. Dittmar facilitated the releases of two of those turtles last year, as well as the myriad details involved in rescuing, rehabilitating

and eventually releasing a male harbor seal that was stranded in Bermuda and flown to Baltimore courtesy of FedEx.

Since it was formed in 1991, MARP has returned 83 rehabilitated animals to their natural habitats. Dittmar has been on-point for nine of them. And her commitment is not only to the cause, but to those who help her in its name. “Every day is a unique opportu-nity for our team to work with protected and endangered species,” she said. “But we can’t do it alone—we’re able to make this impact because of the volunteers who donate their time, friends and businesses who offer goods or services, and members and donors who support us financially. It’s only through the whole Aquarium community that we make this difference.”

In 2009, MARP connected with more than 10,278 people through 25 outreach events, sharing marine debris conservation messages.

Jennifer Dittmar returns a healthy sea turtle to the AtlanticOcean, one of two that the Aquarium’s MARP team rescued, rehabilitated and released in 2009.

A MOMENTOUS YEARLast year, in addition to caring for Aquarium animals every day and opening two new Baltimore exhibits (see Spotlight Shine, pg. 3), National Aquarium veterinarians and animal care staff conducted studies all over the world and participated in nearly 30 events, sharing industry-relevant research on the health and well-being of our living collection, wild populations and natural habitats.

Even with all of the hard work donated to trade journals, and time spent consulting with exhibit and facilities staff for habitat improvements, this team of experts still found the energy to throw a birthday party for a 1-year-old dolphin! It was a momentous year packed full of valuable experiences for them, other staff members and volunteers, our animals and visitors.
