Embracing Change As expected, 2009 was an extremely challenging year for the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, renamed the Dow Jones News Fund in February 2010 to reflect our growing work with the multimedia newsrooms of the digital age.

The Great Recession, triggered by the collapse of the financial markets in 2008, and the increasing popularity of the Internet as a news distributor combined to take a fearsome toll on the nation’s newsrooms. With advertising and circulation revenue plummeting, executives at newspapers, which still provide most of the Fund’s prestigious reporting and editing internships for college students, ordered sharp and painful cuts in news budgets. Not surprisingly, many editors were forced to reduce the number of interns they hired, and for the first time in many years the number of the Fund’s summer internships slipped below 100, to 78.

Yet against this grim backdrop, we remain optimistic about the future of the Fund, which is strong, focused and well positioned to recruit and train the young journalists needed to staff today’s rapidly changing news organizations. One reason for our optimism is the belief that most newspapers will be transformed but not destroyed by the Internet. It is heartening that, at long last, more and more papers are moving aggressively to embrace the new digital distribution technologies and overhaul their print and online publications.

The Fund certainly embraced change in a year in which we published COPY!, a book about our first half century. The programs we offered high school newspaper advisers, journalism professors and high school and college students put increasing emphasis on multimedia skills without neglecting the fundamentals of quality journalism – objective, fact-based reporting; clear, engaging writing, and careful editing. One example: a training program in multimedia journalism aimed at faculty at Historically Black College and Universities. We also reached out to an ever-broader array of newsrooms, including those at business-to-business magazines and online-only publications.

And the pace of change is accelerating. In the summer of 2010, we will offer two multimedia training programs for college teachers, adding a workshop for professors at institutions with large numbers of Hispanic students. In addition, web news providers, including ESPN, the Center for Investigative Reporting and Accuweather.com will hire Fund interns for the first time, joining the ranks of such long-time employers as The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Denver Post. As a result, we remain hopeful that we will be able to provide more internships this year than last – a very positive development in a still-difficult environment.

In our second-half century, the vital work of the Dow Jones News Fund continues apace, aided by the generous support of Dow Jones & Company and its new parent, News Corporation, as well as by scores of traditional and emerging news organizations.

Into the FutureThis is the last annual report from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.

No, we certainly aren’t going out of business. But we are now operating under a new name—the Dow Jones News Fund. Discussions among our board of directors were ongoing for several months, and the official change took effect on Feb. 2, 2010.

First, a bit of history. Bernard Kilgore, then chairman and chief executive of Dow Jones, and four other executives created the Newspaper Fund Inc. in December 1958. Kilgore wanted the Fund to encompass and serve the entire newspaper industry, not a single entity, and feared that adding “Dow Jones” to the name would work against that goal.

The original name stayed with us until 1982, when “Dow Jones” was added. By that time, Dow Jones had contributed $5 million to the Fund and also was paying all of the Fund’s administrative costs, including salaries, travel and related expenses and providing office space. It continues to do so today.

Ours is not the first organization to make the change from “newspaper” to “news.” Others that have switched include the American Society of News Editors, the Online News Association and the Society for News Design.

Several factors went into the name change. First, it allows us to brand more closely with our parent company, News Corporation. Second, we still retain our well known “DJNF” logo. And, third, it reflects the growing number of non-newspaper participants in our programs.

While our work with college students, college professors and the professional media remains the largest target of our funding, we continue to provide much-needed support to high school journalism and to the great teachers who advise scholastic publications—many of which are devoting more and more energy to web-based publications.

In 2009, we provided more than $125,000 in support to 26 workshops for high school students at colleges around the country. Students are trained for up to two weeks in the latest technologies and taught the value in using—correctly and professionally—the social networks that have emerged over the past few years.

This funding is even more important today because many news organizations, faced with ongoing economic difficulties, have reduced their support. Fortunately, news organizations have continued to provide professional journalists to work with the students.

One of the strongest proponents of journalism in the digital age is our 2009 High School Journalism Teacher of the Year, Paul Kandell of Palo Alto High School. Paul’s students have won many awards for their online work. But as he has said, technology isn’t at the core of good journalism. “That is just the latest vehicle. It’s about values.”

That’s a sentiment we shared as the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and will continue to share as the Dow Jones News Fund.

College Programs

Internship Programs Continue to Explore New Ground

College internships have been the backbone of the Fund’s programming over five decades. Though the program offerings have changed with time, the core values of accuracy and excellence remain at the heart of all pre-internship training. Three residency centers -- Western Kentucky University, the University of Texas and the Business Reporting program at New York University -- had interns apply what they learned before leaving campus by creating publications and websites.

The 2009 Multimedia Center for Editing Excellence at Western Kentucky University published special projects in teams on female tattoo artists and help for refugees. Students used flip cameras, digital photography, computer assisted reporting, journalistic reporting, writing and mashups to explore their themes. Business reporters published Economic Stimuli, a collection of reports on the business climate in New York City. Editing interns at the University of Texas, Austin, planned and designed three issues of Southwest Journalist, a six-page color broadsheet with stories and art from the wires.

Robin Kawakami

Robin Kawakami pursued financial journalism after a career in advertising. With a degree from City University in London and experience in Europe, she was placed at The Wall Street Journal in 2009.

Dr. Ed Trayes chose her as the sixth intern to receive the scholarship that bears his name because of her excellent performance during the pre-internship residency and the quality of her work on-the-job.

The scholarship is endowed by Terrence O’Toole, a 1979 graduate of the Temple program though the O’Toole Family Foundation of Short Hills, N.J.

For College Educators

Fund Sponsors Multimedia SeminarFourteen professors from the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities attended a multimedia seminar funded by DJNF in summer 2009.

The five-day session was held at Western Kentucky University, the site of the Fund’s summer training program for college students working at multimedia internships.

Dr. Pam Johnson, director of the School of Journalism and Broadcasting at Western Kentucky, said, “All journalism programs are struggling with how to move their programs forward in terms of multimedia skills for themselves and their students. The workshop was designed to have the faculty work in teams to ‘feel’ the assignment of producing a multimedia web story.”

Gina Kinchlow, a professor at Florida A & M University, summed up the group’s sentiment saying, “I am so energized and motivated with all that I have learned in the workshop, coupled with the great guidance and suggestions I received. It is obvious you (Dr. Johnson) and your great staff have put a lot of work into this event and will impact many HBCUs as a result.”

Rich Holden said that 30 professors applied for the program and that the Fund plans to hold another at WKU in 2010.

Professors Champion Editing at Annual AEJMC BreakfastThe Fund sponsored the Breakfast of Editing Champions at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass

Communication conference in Boston for the first time on Aug. 6.

The breakfast, coordinated for the past eight years by Deborah Gump of Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, had been underwritten by the Knight Foundation and the Hearst Journalism Fellowships.

The free program provided assorted goodies for professors to take away like DVDs loaded with editing exercises, references, texts, articles and web links.

Presenters David Beard of Boston.com and Joshua Benton of the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard gave the audience an earful

and lots to tweet about while discussing the future of copy editing.

Andy Bechtel from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill moderated the Teaching Idea Exchange, a segment where professors share techniques and resources that work.

Summer Workshops Reach Milestones and Students San Antonio College celebrated 25 years as the host of an urban journalism workshop that blends cooperation of Texas professional journalists, second generation participants and faculty who have kept coming back for a quarter century – no matter where in the country they happen to be.

Programs advanced to electronic publishing from blogging to broadcasting and posting PDFs of printed newspapers on the web. Stories ran the gamut from international relations to immigration, civil rights, sports, fashion, historical journalism, style, trends, health and the economy.

“They’re my prayer beads. Icarry them with me to remind meof Iraq,” he explained. “You can’tfind these in America.”

Al-Husseini, 23, moved toTucson from Baghdad twomonths ago, and he discovered heis not alone.

According to the ArizonaRefugee Resettlement Program, 36percent of all refugees who enteredArizona from October 2008 toMarch 2009 were Iraqi, and they allhave one thing in common: theyleft Iraq to lead safer lives.

Increasing numbers of Iraqis are

applying for refugee status because“there is no safety in Iraq, at all,”said Nadya Malillis, anotherrefugee who moved to America ayear and a half ago.

Many Iraqi refugees havefound an extensive support sys-tem among fellow Iraqis and theIslamic Center of Tucson, 901 E.First St.

“Financially, morally, socially,we are supporting them. If there isany conflict or any dispute amongthem, I will be talking to them, giv-ing them direction,” said ImamFarid Farooqi, describing the serv-ices offered at the mosque.

Many of the refugees haveendured intense hardships in Iraq,but that is not to say that their prob-lems disappeared the moment theyset foot in America.

Malillis left Iraq after her hus-

band was kidnapped during a busi-ness trip in Baghdad.

“I don’t know who took him, ifhe’s still alive or not,” Malillis saidthrough a translator. “I don’t knowanything about him.”

Malillis went through a seven-month process to apply for refugeestatus, living in Syria and Turkeybefore finally arriving in America.

Perched on a chair in the livingroom of her cramped midtownapartment, it’s clear that she hasmade the best of her circumstances.The room is filled with family pho-tos, vases of artificial flowers andmismatched furniture. It may not bebeautiful, but it feels like home.

“When I first saw Tucson, I start-ed crying,” Malillis said. “‘This isnot America!’ I thought to myself.”

Malillis was expecting a bigglamorous city, like New York orLas Vegas.

Al-Husseini had an easier transi-tion because he had been a translatorin Baghdad for both the New YorkTimes and the U.S. Army. Workingwith Americans gave him an advan-tage in the relocation process.

Malillis and Mustafa Sadeq, 18,agree that the biggest challenge forrefugees is finding a job. Sadeq isstill supported by his family. Hislimited English skills make findingemployment hard.

“I have applied for four restau-rant jobs. But I still depend on myparents for cooking, laundry,money, advice,” he explained.

Malillis received support from

Lutheran Social Services to pay herrent for the first five months aftershe arrived.

Because she has been unsuc-cessful at finding a job, Malillis hasbeen receiving support from thegovernment.

Malillis and her daughter, TanyaAli, 8, plan to move to Section 8low-income housing.

Farooqi emerges from leadinghis congregation in prayer andsmiles warmly as he walks into hisoffice. Imam at the only mosque inTucson, Farooqi has a deep con-nection to the families at hismosque, wishing “Salaam’Alaykum,” or “peace be uponyou” to everyone who passes by.

Aside from the obvious mone-tary obstacles, Imam Farid Farooquisees challenges among the youth inthe Iraqi refugee community.

“They are in cultural shock. Andif we (the Islamic community) don’ttake care of them properly, therewill be a disaster,” Farooqi said.

Farooqi has known refugee youthto join gangs if left unsupervised.

He believes in the importance ofa strong support system for Iraqirefugees.

“How to get a driving license,what to do if you cannot find a job.What is Social Security,Department of Economic Security,what is 911, how to handle emer-gencies. These things are not avail-able in all countries,” Farooqi said,describing the types of advice hegives refugees on basic servicesoffered in the U.S.

Farooqi estimated that any-where from 300-500 Iraqi refugeefamilies have moved to Tucson,mostly within the last two years.

However, some refugees arehaving such a hard time makingmoney in America that they arewilling to risk their safety by going

back to Iraq, Farooqi said.“They thought that America

would take care of everything.Financial security, social security.Once they are brought here, they areleft unsupervised, unattended, andneglected totally, in different ways.”

But for Malillis, the same close-knit Iraqi tradition has been recre-ated in Tucson.

“When I came here, there wasthe same strong sense of communi-ty,” she explained.

“In Tucson, there is the same cul-ture, same tradition, same connec-tions.” Malillis said. “We all helpeach other and share news about newprograms (like governmental aid).”

Malillis describes her typicalsocial activities as spending timewith fellow Iraqis, cooking tradi-tional food, and discussing newsfrom home.

“The relationships in the commu-nity are so closely tied that, socially,moving to America has been nohuge change,” al-Husseini agreed.

Sadeq, al-Husseini, and Malillisall agree that Tucson and Baghdadhave many similarities.

“The warm climate, smallbuildings, and relatively slow styleof living are all like Baghdad,” al-Husseini said.

Despite the challenge ofrevamping his entire life, Sadeq isvery optimistic about America. Hehe said that Americans are easy todeal with; they are friendly, help-ful, and he never feels like astranger or a refugee.

Sadeq said he has not experienceddisrespect because of his ethnicity,nor does he feel stupid when he strug-gles with English. He does not getquestioned as he’s walking down thestreet, like he used to in Iraq.

“I could sense the freedomfrom the very first day,” Sadeqsaid, smiling.

Malillis has hope that thingswill improve in Iraq.

“Iraq is my country. If Iraq will bestable and safe, I intend to return.”

The economic crisis and therecent decline in funding forschools may be leading moreUniversity of Arizona studentsto take classes at PimaCommunity College.

“It’s less expensive to go to acommunity college for the firsttwo years, then transfer to a uni-versity,” said Erin Vanbebber, asophomore majoring in kinesi-ology at Pima. “You savemoney.”

Students who attended commu-nity college in Tucson paidapproximately one-sixth as muchas those at the UA for the 2008-2009 academic school year,according to tuition rates postedon the UA and Pima CommunityCollege Web sites.

Because of the state budgetdeficit, the Arizona Legislaturehas cut funding to the UA andother state universities. UAadministrators had to deal withan $80 million cut for the 2008-2009 school year, said UA Deanof Students Carol Thompson.

The university will lose evenmore money next year and fur-ther tuition increases are expect-ed in July, Thompson said.

Karen Weaver, the academicadvisor at the UA School ofJournalism, sees several studentsa day who come to ask about tak-ing classes at Pima.

Weaver explained thatbecause of the budget cuts, thereare fewer teachers, and thatmeans bigger class sizes at theUA.

When courses fill, studentshave to wait another semester,Weaver said, and added that atPima a seat is usually available.

Students do not want to waitto take a course at the UA if it isoffered at Pima, especially if it ischeaper there, according toWeaver.

Tuition for resident undergrad-uates at the UA has increased by$659 for next fall. Out-of-stateundergraduates will pay $2,575more.

Pima’s tuition has gone up3.7 percent for the fall, makingone credit $51.50 for residentsand $87 for out-of-state stu-dents.

“Pima is definitely cheaper,”said Britney Prince, a creativewriting senior at the UA. “I tooktwo classes there just because itwas more convenient.”

The downtown Pima campusis a few minutes away from theUA.

The UA continues to have asteady enrollment each new aca-demic year, Thompson said.

Robert Riza, the assistantvice chancellor of students atPima, said there was an increasein the number of students attend-ing Pima during the 2008-2009school year.

According to Riza, there was a12 percent enrollment increasethis summer compared to the pre-vious year.

Pima has an average class sizeof 20 students.

Forty-seven percent of theclasses at the UA have fewer than19 students. In the fall, however,three large classes will be held inCentennial Hall.

Like other universities andcolleges in the U.S., the UA andPima have an arrangement thatallows students to tranfser cred-its, Weaver said.

Although the UA and Pima aretwo different kinds of colleges,they fall under the ArizonaCourse Applicability System.

Attending a four-year univer-sity is the more costly of the twochoices, but those who attend afour-year university are morelikely to receive a bachelor’sdegree and earn more money in

the future, according to researchdone by Bridget Long, a profes-sor of education and economicsat Harvard University.

“Transferring from a commu-nity college to a four-year insti-tution can be difficult,” saidLong. “Research suggests thatfar fewer students are able to do itthan would like to.”

Following are excerpts from the multimedia presentation Paul Kandell gave at the awards luncheon on Saturday, November 14, at the National Scholastic Press Association/Journalism Education Association convention in Washington, D.C.

I often find myself saying, at the end of a day, “I love my job.” On a day like today, when I am with all of you celebrating the work that we do jointly, I have to say I love it all the more.

Scholastic journalism California-styleI come to you today from the great state of California, home of the Free Speech Movement, which began at my alma mater; home of the strongest student press laws in the country; home of 1994 Journalism Teacher of the Year Nick Ferentinos, who, with his students, on Day 1 of the Hazelwood era, courageously and successfully used Education Code 48907 to block Hazelwood from California schools; home of the ground-breaking Journalism Teacher Protection Act, brought forward by our legislative champion, State Sen. Leland Yee; Home of the one-man institution we know as Steve O’Donoghue, our 36th Journalism Teacher of the Year, who, after three decades of advising, is still giving to scholastic journalism, organizing adviser retention and mentoring programs and collective publishing opportunities for students; home of Silicon Valley, which in turn is home to Palo Alto High School, where — between a newsmagazine; a sportsmagazine; a broadsheet newspaper; a daily broadcast show; yearbook, photography and video production programs; a journalism web site — I and my colleagues teach and advise some 300 journalism students a year, 500 if you add in the rest of our media arts program.

* * * *Family connectionsIt turns out that my kids. . . have more than a little journalism blood running in their veins.

Their grandfather, my dad, was: an award-winning high school journalist; a reporter and editor of his college newspaper.; an Air Force public information specialist working in print and radio; an award-winning professional journalist with the Herald-Examiner in Southern California; a public relations consultant for two decades, a career capped by his work in creating resident-run newspapers for low income, minority communities in the LA city and Chicago housing authorities — truly awesome undertakings; In retirement, an editor of a nonprofit newsletter in Eugene, Ore.

He taught me the basics that I teach my own children and that I apply in my classroom today:1. Tell the truth2. Fight for justice3. Insist on equality for all4. Nothing worth doing comes easily

Venerable Awards Program Recognizes Media Teachers and Their Students

Paul Kandell of Palo Alto High School in California became the 51st National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year and the first dedicated primarily to teaching online journalism. His award-winning Paly Voice news site is distinguished as one of the first to be recognized by professional online media with a Webby-award.

Kandell received a plaque, a pin and a state-of-the-art laptop for use in his newsroom. A classroom subscription to The Wall Street Journal and access to webinars and seminars at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

Three ideas Aside from fighting against censorship at every opportunity, I come back to this: How can we get more students into journalism classrooms? What can we do to give more students the publications experience, to get more of them in the front-row seat?

Here are three ideas for bringing more journalism education to the nation’s students:

A new approach on minority outreachFirst, if we’re going to get more students into those front-row seats, we need to focus on outreach, to address our terrible lack of diversity, a lack of diversity seen in professional journalism, in JEA and NSPA – just look around our convention – and in our

schools, where white and Asian students and their parents have figured out that journalism is one of the most potent enrichment programs out there; their Latino, African-American and Pacific Islander counterparts for the most part aren’t taking part.

At Paly, we’ve tried special invites, conversations with La Raza and the Black student union, even a diversity-in-journalism club. Over time, the problem only got worse. Last year, out of hundreds of students in beginning and advanced journalism courses at Paly, none were on the free- or reduced-lunch list, none were from East Palo Alto, our sister community a few miles away that has a vastly lower socio-economic profile.We had to do something.

So this is what we did: We held a two-week summer workshop away from the school, in the community where our minority kids live; we offered students $8 an hour for 40 hours to take a basic Beginning Journalism class, and we got them a paid six-week internship, and, finally, we said, if you can do all of that, you can skip Beginning Journalism – something we never do – and let you move right onto a journalism publication.

Our efforts have met limited, but promising success so far. To these kids, I say we want you with us; we need you for us to be whole.

Inoculating all students with journalism valuesI’m proud of our summer program, and we’re looking for funding to do an expanded version this year. But I also realize it’s not enough. We need to think bigger. We all need to

think bigger.

How can we inoculate all students:· With First Amendment values?· With the journalism brand of critical thinking and writing? · With 21st century communication and web literacy skills?

At Paly, our answer — think of it as our version of “No Child Left Behind” — is to try to embed a high tech beginning journalism curriculum into our required 9th and 10th grade English classes. That way all students will get the enrichment, all students will get qualified to work on a publication. You want 21st century citizens. This is where to start.

Creating digital journalistsAs a prelude to my final point, let me tell you what’s been happening in the past month in Paly journalism. For years, a login and password for the Paly Voice was something you could only get if you were one of 30 or so members of the Web staff. This year, the voice staffers, sick of the hours of uploading and marketing the work of our print publications, said, “No more. Do it yourself. We’ll teach you how.”

I’ve been doing digital journalism with students since 1996, when at a national convention in San Francisco we set up one room for students to produce and upload stories and another — like a little news museum — for them to see what had been produced in the first room.

Since then, my students have won many awards for their online work. And time and time again advisers and students from other schools have said, how can we do what you do? My answer for 13 of the 14 years of my advising career has been a diplomatically phrased version of, “You can’t.” My students were operating in the stratosphere — I had no idea how to do what they did.

No more of the same — get on the web.

But all that has finally changed. For the first time in my career, I’m happy to be able to say, “You can do what my students are doing.” In the last year, the technology has finally become accessible.

There are lots of places to start.

I, for one, am a fan of JEA’s Digital Media Page, maintained by Aaron Manful. The message of the site is clear: No more of the same. Get on the web.

And I’m a fan of Tracy Anne Sena who joined me in throwing out our same-old, same-old summer adviser training program and said – no more of the same – we need to get these advisers on the web.

And I’m a fan of Journalism Education Association of Northern California, whose leaders got it right when they threw out the template for their tired old state conventions and pivoted, completely, to say – no more of the same – our convention needs to be about digital journalism.

And I’m a fan, too, of JEA and NSPA for producing a national convention that also gets it. No more of the same. It’s about the web.

But we can go farther. Let’s get a clue from the Poynter Institute and offer distance learning for students who have trouble making it to national conventions. Why isn’t this speech also a webinar? Why aren’t all the presentations at this convention? No more of the same – we need to get our practice the web.

These were exhilarating moments, but at its core this is not about technology — That is just the latest vehicle. It’s about values. When I see our summer program in EPA bearing fruit, when I see my students engaging in great storytelling, in getting that rush from delivering breaking news, when I see them exercising their rights to fight for what they believe, I am drawn back to those Kandell family values.

Those aren’t just family values. Those are American values. And quality journalism education is, for me — and I know, for you — the greatest way to pass them on.

Essays Win Classroom Subscriptions

The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition gifted 16 teachers with subscriptions to the paper, which includes 30 classroom sets and a daily Journal for the teacher. The Fund asked teachers for write 250 words explaining how they would use a free subscription to the Classroom Edition.

One of the winners, April Sniffen of DeLand (Fla.) High School, wrote: “I want my students to appreciate the print medium for what it is – a tangible product they can touch, smell, read, without straining their eyes looking at a projection off the Internet.”

Fund Publishes Anniversary BookCOPY! The first 50 years of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund tops the list of DJNF publications in 2009 as its inaugural volume chronicling the history of the small foundation was published. Written by Dr. Rick Kenney of Hampton University, the book was compiled from notes, papers and interviews with executive directors and key actors in the foundation’s development.

The idea was to tell the Fund’s story in honor of its 50th anniversary. Dr. Kenney and Rich Holden traveled to Sea Island, Ga., to interview Don Carter about his job as the Fund’s first executive director.

Mr. Carter fondly recalled offering the initial teacher fellowship program for what would be a few dozen applicants but getting hundreds of applications instead. To his delight, his bosses allowed him to accept and send all 250 teachers to summer journalism training.

Some stellar graduates of the DJNF internship programs shared their reminiscences, too. For example: “There ought to be a book – ‘All I Really Need to Know I Learned in a Newspaper Fund Internship.’ In one summer, I had the ecstasy of a Page One byline in The Wall Street Journal – and the agony of editing a mistake into an important story. Both experiences were invaluable.” James Willse, Editor, The Star-Ledger, Newark, N.J., DJNF Intern, 1965

Free Newspaper for Media Teachers Enjoys Reader Support Editor George Taylor, his production team, reporters and columnists continue to produce what one reader called “the newsiest publication for scholastic media advisers: Adviser Update.”

Taylor looks for innovations, trends and new programs then hires writers to explore them. Students at five Arizona high schools are covering news and

publishing it on school Web sites, thanks to a new Cronkite pro-gram that is building multimedia newsrooms in underserved high schools.

The Stardust High School Journalism Program at Arizona State University is the latest Cronkite School effort to improve and support high school journal-ism. And it may just be the most unusual.

Dean Christopher Callahan said he believes it is the first university-based initiative in the country to create newsrooms in high schools.

The grant targets schools with large minority populations that do not have school newspapers or viable journalism programs. Those are the schools that often

don’t have the resources to pub-lish school newspapers, Callahan said.

Under the program, the Cronkite School equips news-rooms at each school with MacIn-tosh computers, scanners, video cameras, lights, microphones, digital cameras and software

necessary for publishing an online newspaper that also can be published as a print product. Cronkite staff members install the equipment and manage serv-ers that host schools’ Web sites as well as provide teacher training and support.

The innovative program is

funded by the Stardust Founda-tion, a non-profit corporation based in Scottsdale, Ariz., that provides grants to organizations that impact family and neighbor-hood stability.

Under the two-year grant, multimedia newsrooms will be installed at a total of 10 Arizona

high schools. The first schools selected for

the program were Buckeye Union HS, Coolidge HS, Douglas HS, Miami HS and Snowflake HS. Newsrooms were set up at the schools during the summer of

Several years ago, I returned to my high school to teach an

ACT prep class. The class was taught in the evening, so the school was void of teachers, teen-agers and noise. Before my stu-dents arrived, I roamed the halls; I had not been in this building for nearly 15 years. Although the building had undergone remod-eling and looked more modern, those hallways made me feel like I was 16 years old again.

I wandered through, looking for the classroom that had housed the newspaper and staff and where I had spent the majority of my junior and senior years. The location of the room had changed, but once I found it, I also found several students, hunched over computers, still working at 7 p.m. So much had changed in my own life, but I was stunned by how much had remained the same in that office. I wanted so badly to turn back the clock and revisit those days in the early 1990s when my life revolved around my job as co-editor in chief, when I worked daily, side-by-side with my closest friends, and when we produced tangible work that I can look at today and still feel pride in the quality, the relevance, and the display of strong writing and credible reporting skills.

I have gone through sev-eral career changes, but all have involved the written word, and all

have been influenced by my high school journalism experience. I took my first journalism class the first semester of my junior year in high school. I signed up for the class because I loved to write and because it was taught by my former English teacher, Candace Perkins.

Throughout my 18 years of education, Mrs. Perkins was the teacher who had the greatest impact on my life. When I was a sophomore, she had taken an interest in me as a person and as a writer. She edited my work with her green pencil and gently pushed me to hone my writing skills, learn new ways to express myself, and always achieve new goals. She encouraged my love of reading by sharing with me nov-els and authors she herself loved. And she suggested I sign up for her Introduction to Journalism class my junior year.

Without a doubt, I can credit my facility in writing to this journalism class. Although I may not have realized it at the time, when Mrs. Perkins taught me how to write a strong lead, she also taught me how to pick out the most important element of the subject at hand, which led me to craft strong topic sentences and strong thesis statements. The way she taught me to think about the writing process has also helped me teach that process to students at all levels, from non-native English speakers to stu-dents in college writing courses to honors high school students. In that fateful Intro to Journal-ism class, I learned the basic skills that would serve me well throughout my career as a high school English teacher, a writing instructor at a community college, and now as a grant writer.

These are the technical ways

in which my journalism experi-ence in high school has shaped my career. But there are more signifi-cant ways that it has influenced my life. Mrs. Perkins believed in me at a time when I did not believe in myself. Because some-one whom I thought was brilliant and talented in turn thought I was smart and skilled at writing, I began to believe in myself and my abilities.

Because an adult whom I respected believed that I was capable of winning journalism competitions, I entered them. Her belief in me led me to take chanc-es and risks that I would never have attempted on my own. This belief therefore propelled me to finish my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, even as a young, single mother. Her faith in me allowed me to have faith in myself, and this faith has served me better than any class, any job, or any degree could have alone.

I have read that if adolescents have only one adult in their lives who supports and believes in them, it can make all the dif-ference for their future success. As a teenager, I had wonderful parents, but sometimes, we need someone from the outside, some-one who has some objectivity, to teach us to value ourselves. Mrs. Perkins did this for me, and when I became a teacher myself, I tried to approach my students with this aim always in the forefront of my mind.
