The University of Charleston men’s tennis team is looking ready and very strong for

the 2010 spring season after the team had a great showing in the Days Inn Classic and went 2-

2 in the fall season. The Golden Eagles ended up ranked 6th in the Atlantic region after the

fall season; This is great because the NCAA gives the top eight teams in each region a bid into

the NCAA tournament: therefore the UC men’s tennis team is on the right track heading into

the spring season.

The team had wins over Davis and Elkins University and Johnson C. Smith Univer-

sity, who is ranked 11th in the Atlantic region after the fall season. They had a very close

match against West Liberty State College, who is ranked 4th in the Atlantic region and also

had a tough loss to West Virginia Wesleyan University, who is ranked 2nd in the region and

43rd in the nation. Coach Santen said, “We had some close matches in the fall that we could

have won and the team has learned that every match counts.”

The Golden Eagles have many other tough matches coming up in the spring and the

players are training hard in the off-season to stay in shape. The team is led by seniors Reid

McEwen, Matt Hughes and Victor Machado who are keeping the younger players on the

team focused and prepared for the upcoming season. Matt Hughes said, “This is our year to

make it into the NCAA tournament. Everyone on the team needs to work hard and stay fo-

cused because every match matters.”

Sam Humphrey, a freshman from Watford, England, has been a fantastic addition to

the University of Charleston men’s tennis team. The freshman is a solid tennis player all

around and shows no weaknesses when out on the court. Kris Riede, a sophomore on the

team, said, “Sam works hard every point and doesn’t let his opponents get any free points off

him.” Sam plays one in the line-up where the team struggled at getting some wins last year.

Having Sam will get the team some victories at the one position. Also, Rico Williams will be

playing in the 2010 season after red-shirting in the 2008-2009 seasons. Rico will be a solid ad-

dition in the team’s line-up this year.

The rest of the team doesn’t get any weaker with the three seniors- Matt Hughes, Reid

McEwen and Victor Machado. UC has five sophomores Kris Riede, Kyle Barrett, Oliver

Grimbly, Eric Bodge, and Andrew Jarrett as well. The team’s depth really makes practices

very competitive, which will just make the team stronger and prepare them for the 2010

spring season.
