BIOGRAPHIESFor more than a decade, ROBERT KAPILOW has

brought the joys and wonder of Classical music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The award-winning musician helps children explore how composers use music to portray wildlife sounds and movements in his acclaimed CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS program. Hear insects buzzing in Flight of the Bumblebee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and roaring

lions, wild horses, and twittering birds in Camille Saint-Saëns’ enchanting piece The Carnival of the Animals. Kapilow’s inimitable humor and original music come to life in a presentation of John Gardner’s poem And Furthermore, They Bite!

Kapilow’s range of activities is broad, including his

What Makes It Great?® presentations, family compositions, FamilyMusik® events, and Citypieces. The reach of his interactive events and activities is wide – geographically and culturally – from Native American tribal communities in Montana to inner-city high-school students in Louisiana. Kapilow’s popularity and appeal have been reflected in two notable invitations – to appear on NBC’s Today show, and to write the recently published book All You Have to Do Is Listen: Music From the Inside Out. What Makes It Great?® now sells out regular subscription series in New York, Boston, Kansas City, and Vancouver. New series have recently been added at Stanford University and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Kapilow has written numerous commissioned works, including the first musical setting for Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham. Kapilow’s Green Eggs & Hamadeus, now available on CD, includes his own work and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik in a lively mix of discussion and performance. In 2004, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival presented Kapilow’s And Furthermore, They Bite!, a companion piece to Carnival of the Animals, and Great Performers of Lincoln Center boasted a new series of Kapilow’s FamilyMusik®

programs during the 2004-2005 season. Kapilow’s other compositions include Dr. Seuss’ Gertrude McFuzz; a Christmas-Hannukah pair of pieces; and his first Opera, Many Moons, which is based on the James Thurber story with a libretto by Hilary Blecher. Another popular family piece by Kapilow is Play Ball!, a setting of Casey at the Bat.

Involving large communities in the inspiration and compositional process of his commemorative works, Kapilow has left a profound mark on the nation’s cities and regions. After receiving great acclaim for Citypiece: DC Monuments (a millennium composition commissioned by the Kreeger Museum for the Kennedy Center and the National Symphony Orchestra), Kapilow reprised his interactive compositional format in a statewide project commissioned by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the state of Louisiana as part of the 2003 celebrations for the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase.

Another project by Kapilow examined and reflected on the historic impact of the Lewis and Clark expedition (commemorating its bicentennial) from the perspective of the Native American Indian. The large choral and orchestral work Summer Sun, Winter Moon premiered in 2004.

As a conductor, Kapilow has led many of America’s top Continued on page 6

orchestras, including the National Symphony, the Philadephia Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony. He has also led numerous new works of musical theater, ranging from the Tony award-winning Nine on Broadway to the premiere of Frida for the opening of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival and premieres of works for the American Repertory Theater. He is the conductor and creative director for FamilyMusik® for the Boston Celebrity Series and at New York’s Lincoln Center. He has been the conductor and director of FamilyMusik® for New York’s 92nd Street Y, co-director of the Rutgers SummerFest Festival, assistant conductor of the Opera Company of Boston, music director of the touring company Opera New England, conductor of the Kansas City Symphony’s summer Family Fare program, and music director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra for five seasons.

At the age of 19, Kapilow interrupted his academic work at Yale University to study with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Two years later, after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Yale, he continued his studies at the Eastman School of Music. After graduating from Eastman, he returned to Yale where he was assistant professor for six years.

Kapilow’s career has been marked by numerous awards and grants. He won first place in the Fontainebleau Casadesus Piano Competition and was the second-place winner of the Antal Dorati Conductor’s Competition with the Detroit Symphony. Kapilow was a featured composer on Chicago Public Radio’s prestigious Composers in America series and is a recipient of an Exxon Meet-the-Composer grant and numerous American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers awards. He was the first composer ever to be granted the rights to set Dr. Seuss’ words to music, and his music is published exclusively by G. Schirmer. Kapilow lives in River Vale, New Jersey, with his wife and three children.

The RIVERSIDE COUNTY PHILHARMONIC, approaching its 50th season, is one of the leading regional orchestras in the Inland Empire. Its 72 members are some of the finest professional musicians in Southern California. Originally founded as a recreational orchestra of volunteer musicians in 1958, the Philharmonic’s many milestones include the West Coast premiere of William Kraft’s Renaissance, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Pulitzer prize-winning Three Pieces for Orchestra, the world premiere of John Williams’ Clarinet Concerto, and the American premiere of Ruaumoko: Four

Pacific Seasons by the New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. Currently, the orchestra presents a season of eight performances in its home venue, the historic Riverside Municipal Audi-torium in Downtown Riverside. It is also in high demand throughout the region, performing concerts in Cerritos, Lake Arrowhead, Lake Elsinore, Fallbrook, Rancho Cucamonga, and Temecula. The Philharmonic performs an annual Fourth of July concert at Riverside National Cemetery. With these and free concerts in local parks, the orchestra has quadrupled its audience since 2001.

Soprano SHERRY BOONE’s work spans from Broad-way to Opera. She wrote and starred in The Super Star Artist Show, directed by Tamilla Woodard and premiered at Zipper Theatre in New York in 2007. On Broadway, Boone received critical acclaim for her performance in Marie Christine at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Her Opera credits include The Scrimshaw Violin (Band Leader); Guest From the Future (Olga); Robert Kapilow’s Green Eggs and Hamadeus; And Furthermore, They Bite!; and Two by Seuss. She has been a guest soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Nashville Symphony, and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Boone has appeared with authors Gish Jen, Walter Mosley, Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, and violinist Cho-Liang Lin in Stirring the Pet. A pub-lished lyricist and poet, Boone collaborated with composer Sean Jeremy Palmer to produce and direct the new Opera, Ellen Craft, which won “Best Ensemble Performance” at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival. Baritone JONATHAN HAYS’ engagements this year include And Furthermore, They Bite!; From Broadway to Gorky Street; The Glass Hammer; and The Lord Nelson Mass. He also joined the voice faculties of Brooklyn College and Dickinson College. Renowned as an interpreter of Contem-porary music, Hays portrayed Shadow Grendel in the world premiere of Grendel. He also collaborated on Songs of Sadness, portrayed Isaiah Berlin in The Guest From the Future, and performed multiple roles in Ochelata’s Wedding. Hays’ other Opera credits include Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Cosi Fan Tutte, Das Rheingold, La Bohème, Giulio Cesare, Deidamia, L’Italiana in Algeri, La Cenerentola, La Gazza Ladra, I Pagliacci, Fidelio, Albert Herring, and Béatrice et Bénédict. He is a frequent guest soloist with symphony orchestras across North America, including Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Eos Orchestra,

Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Musica Viva, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dancer MELISSA SANDVIG was born and raised in Southern California and began her ballet training at age 5 at Long Beach Ballet. After training at many summer workshops such as Pacific Northwest Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Milwaukee Ballet, Sandvig began dancing professionally with Los Angeles Classical Ballet (LACB) under the direc-tion of David Wilcox. She was the first runner-up in the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards competition and went on to tour internationally with LACB in Taiwan and China. Upon graduating from high school, Sandvig joined Milwaukee Ballet and quickly rose through the company ranks to perform solo roles for six seasons. After returning to California in 2003, she became certified in Pilates and began freelancing with local companies and Operas throughout the United States. Sandvig is now a company member with Helios Dance Theater, Body Traffic, and Los Angeles Con-temporary Ballet, and is one of few that performs Marie de la Palmes’ aerial ballet Le Coeur Illumine. n

BIOGRAPHIESJosé Hernández formed SOL DE MÉXICO DE JOSÉ

HERNÁNDEZ® in 1981. His charismatic arrangements and signature trumpet playing made the group an instant and lasting success. Sol de México® has played to sold-out audiences from New York’s Lincoln Center to Vina del Mar in Santiago, Chile. It was the first Mariachi group to play concerts in Beijing, China, and North Korea, and the shows were sold-out.

The theatrical aspect of Sol de México’s® music and performance style has caught the attention of Hollywood producers and directors. The group has been featured in numerous films and soundtrack recordings, including Glory Road, the Academy award-nominated film Seabiscuit, and, most recently, Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

The versatility of Sol de México® has led to collabora-tions with The Beach Boys and Willie Nelson. In the world

of Latin music, Sol de México® has played alongside Vin-cente Fernandez, the late Selena, and José Feliciano, and on a record-breaking concert tour with Luis Miguel. The group’s records have been nominated for Grammy Awards, and the ensemble was invited to play at the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards.

JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ’s family tree is rooted with five generations of Mariachi musicians who hail from the Sierra del Tigre region of Jalisco. He continues to build on that foundation to help Mariachi music flourish in other countries, in new musical genres, and in the hearts of new audiences. As a musician, Hernández has played for four U.S. presidents, including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.

Hernández is also an innovator who, in addition to

leading the world-famous Mariachi group, has collaborated with symphonies throughout the United States. Hernández also founded Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles® – America’s first all-female Mariachi ensemble. In 1991, he started a children’s music foundation called the Mariachi Heritage Society. Hernández feels that maintaining the spirit of culture is as important as giving children the tools to succeed in any endeavor.

More than awards and credits, it is the passion and love of the Mariachi tradition that is at the heart of Hernández’s efforts and music. Although he has played for heads of state, it is not surprising to see him perform at the famous Cielito Lindo Mariachi restaurant. Arranging and writing Mariachi music is a legacy that Hernández respects and loves.

“I am a fifth-generation Mariachi musician,” said Hernández. “My father came here in the 1940s when there was only one place in Los Angeles that had Mariachi music and the band had to pay the restaurant owner 25 cents per song to make up for the lost jukebox quarter. But my father always said that the day Mariachi music is work is the day you die.”

Founded in 1994, MARIACHI REYNA DE LOS ANGELES® captivates audiences with a vivacious spirit. Enriching the Mariachi forum as America’s first all-female Mariachi ensemble, the group brings sensitivity, beauty, warmth, and an attractive perspective to the realm of Mexico’s musical heritage.

The documentary Compañeras, which aired on PBS and KCET, profiles America’s first all-female Mariachi group in a cultural and musical tradition that has traditionally been male-dominated.

Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles® has recorded two successful albums – Solo Tuya (Yours Only) and El Mejor Mariachi Femenino del Mundo (The Best Female Mariachi in the World) – produced by Hernández. The ensemble’s latest album, Compañeras, is a collection of traditional Mexican songs.

The dance troupe BALLET FOLKLORICO DEL PACIFICO brings to life the legends, myths, traditions, and richness that define Mexico. In a spirited showcase of lively tunes, colorful costumes, and exuberant dances, the ensemble takes the audience on a whirlwind musical and visual tour of Mexico. With intensive training in Classical Ballet, Modern dance, and Mexican Folk dance, performers combine the three genres to create a dynamic and theatrical style of move-ment that consistently captivates. n

there will be one 20-minute intermission.the taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHYDuring the golden era of 1930s Big Band Swing, the

late Harry James, who began his career playing with the Benny Goodman band, developed a new and unique sound. The music was refreshing to fans who flocked to his string of hits, including I’ve Heard That Song Before, You Made Me Love You, By the Sleepy Lagoon, and You’ll Never Know.

James’ band helped launch the careers of many musicians of the World War II era, including legendary singer-actor Frank Sinatra and celebrated Jazz vocalist Helen Forrest. Today, the trumpet virtuoso’s legacy endures with the HARRY JAMES ORCHESTRA DIRECTED BY FRED RADKE, which carries on the tradition of mellow musical arrangements and fine rhythmic playing that first made the ensemble famous. Under the deft guidance of lead trumpet master Radke, the orchestra plays worldwide to special recognition and acclaim. Iowa’s The Des Moines

Register praised: “Radke has commanding stage presence. His royal figure demanded flawless performances from his fellow musicians, and they delivered with style and grace.”

Radke has won three Telly Awards, with the most recent in 2007 for Visions of Valor, a program which honors recipients of the “Medal of Honor.” He also won for music direction for Apollo 13 in 2005 and for the Seattle Museum of Flight’s Wings of Heroes in 2004.

Radke has performed with a long list of musical luminaries, including the acclaimed Glenn Miller Orchestra, legendary singer Jack Jones, popular pianist Earl Grant, singer and radio-television personality Dennis Day, actress-singer Connie Stevens, crooner Pat Boone, Jazz singer-composer Mel Tormé, and the celebrated vocal groups The Pied Pipers and The Lennon Sisters. n

BIOGRAPHIESA CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS, which features

the DAVID BENOIT QUARTET and the ASIA AMERICA YOUTH ORCHESTRA, is a heartfelt tribute to the late Peanuts creator Charles Schulz. Developed by Contemporary Jazz pianist-composer-conductor David Benoit, the production celebrates Vince Guaraldi’s compositions in a lively display of songs – including Christmastime Is Here and Linus & Lucy’s Theme – from the classic soundtrack of the animated special. The LUNADA BAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT CHOIR will also perform.

Five-time Grammy nominee Benoit – best known for Snap!, his instrumental hit from the award-winning album Fuzzy Logic – incorporated various musical genres to create this inspirational show. The array of music – including Jazz, R&B, and Classical – defines the Peanuts signature sound. The tribute has been a huge hit with fans of the popular comic strip and its characters.

Benoit, who was voted “Keyboardist of the Year” in

2000 and 2001 by the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards, has ar-ranged, conducted, and played for popular Pop and Jazz per-formers, including vocalist Patti Austin, saxophonist Dave Koz, singer Faith Hill, Grammy nominee Brian McKnight, and singers-songwriters Kenny Loggins and Kenny Rankin. Benoit also paid homage to one of his chief influences – the legendary Leonard Bernstein – with the critically acclaimed production The Songs of West Side Story.

Under Benoit’s guidance, the Asia America Youth Sym-phony strives to open artistic and cultural borders by fusing the music of the East and the West and combining Classical and Jazz performances. Founded in 2001 by Benoit, the ensemble provides opportunities for young musicians – ages 12 to 18 – to play in a professional-level orchestra. Students, who are encouraged to write original compositions for the orchestra, perform a wide array of musical repertoire that introduces tra-ditional Asian instruments into traditional Western Classical performances in very non-traditional approaches. n

BIOGRAPHYIn WYNONNA – A CLASSIC CHRISTMAS, the

Country music sensation presents holiday hits – including Santa Claus Is Coming to Town and Winter Wonderland – from her Top 10 album A Classic Christmas. The 2006 CD garnered rave reviews from fans and critics with Wynonna’s poignant versions of White Christmas, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, and Ave Maria.

Wynonna has set the music charts ablaze with 20 No. One hits and a multitude of Gold and Platinum records, including To Be Loved by You, Only Love, Tell Me Why, and A Bad Goodbye. “Her songs and stories are pure Country: simple, colored with heartache and full of inspiration,” said The Seattle Times.

Honored multiple times by the Country Music Associa-tion, Wynonna was also crowned top female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. Her self-titled solo debut album was released in 1992, producing three consecutive No. One

singles, including She Is His Only Need, I Saw the Light, and No One Else on Earth. Since then, Wynonna has rocked the music charts with more hits, including My Strongest Weakness, Rock Bottom, and Is It Over Yet? Although she is associated largely with the Country music genre, Wynonna landed on the dance music charts in 2005 with her version of I Want to Know What Love Is. She will release her seventh studio album in early 2009.

Prior to her solo success, Wynonna was already an ac-complished name in the industry as one-half of the duo The Judds. With her mother and partner, Naomi Judd, Wynonna became one of the most successful performers in Country music, selling more than 20 million records worldwide and winning more than 60 awards, including five Grammys, nine Country Music Association Awards, and eight Billboard Music Awards. n

BIOGRAPHYTHE IRISH TENORS HOLIDAY SHOW WITH

ORCHESTRA is a festive celebration of Irish favorites and seasonal classics. The Irish Tenors – which consists of Anthony Kearns, Karl Scully, and Finbar Wright – has won acclaim and honors throughout the world, with The Washington Post proclaiming, “There’s a lot to say for the skill of the Irish, as demonstrated by The Irish Tenors’ blending of traditional and modern songs.” The Boston Globe says the troupe’s emotion-filled songs “rather effectively tugged the heartstrings.”

Since its inception, The Irish Tenors has become one of the most successful Irish touring acts ever, second only to the Grammy-winning Rock band U2. In 1998, three accomplished tenors were invited to perform together at the Royal Dublin Society in Ireland. Accompanied by a 60-piece orchestra, the three sang Irish favorites such as When Irish Eyes Are Smiling along with other traditional Pop standards. PBS broadcasted the landmark concert, electrifying Americans coast to coast.

A tour followed, with the trio selling out major venues across the United States. The group’s albums – The Irish Tenors and Home for Christmas – dominated Billboard’s World Music and Classical charts for more than two years, cementing the ensemble’s hold over fans and critics. More albums were released to critical acclaim, including Live in Belfast, Ellis Island, We Three Kings, Heritage, and Sacred.

The Irish Tenors has delighted crowds worldwide with its unique interpretations of diverse songs, including Céline Dion’s My Heart Will Go On and South of the Border (Down Mexico Way), which was written by Songwriters Hall of Fame honoree Jimmy Kennedy. These tunes join the group’s repertoire, already rich with crowd favorites such as Danny Boy, My Wild Irish Rose, and Fields of Athenry.

By 2004, The Irish Tenors had become solid fixtures on the American music scene with regular television appearances on shows such as NBC’s The Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, Live With Regis and Kelly, and 20/20. n

BIOGRAPHYGROOVELILY has been praised for its eclectic

musical hybrid, which The Boston Herald described as “helium-powered Pop-Rock with enough ingenuity to take thrilling flight.” Known for its innovative stage productions – a colorful showcase of soaring vocals, snappy songs, and blazing instrumentals – the group is transcending boundaries often defined by musical genres and is making waves with a new kind of music that’s uniquely its own. The trio’s inimitable musical formula has delighted flocks of fans and critics. The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, “Spritely and sweet-natured, richly tuneful, lyrically playful and comforting. That’s the like-no-other, adult-Rock trio GrooveLily in a nutshell.”

Striking 12, the band’s critically acclaimed concert-musical, further buoyed GrooveLily’s visibility and prominence in music circles. The New York Times said of the experience, “The most important ingredient for a successful musical … is a first-rate score, and this one is terrific.” The San Francisco Chronicle called the production “captivating” and described it as “not so much a musical as a story threaded through a concert.”

GrooveLily is composed of keyboardist Brendan Milburn, drummer Gene Lewin, and founder-electric violinist-vocalist Valerie Vigoda, who has toured with Grammy and Emmy winner Cyndi Lauper, Grammy nominee Joe Jackson, and the acclaimed Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The trio has been praised for its diverse productions, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Sleeping Beauty Wakes, a twist on the classic Brothers Grimm story that takes audiences into parallel worlds: a fairy-tale kingdom and a contemporary sleep-disorder clinic. Sleeping Beauty Wakes won 10 Ovation Awards, prompting the Daily News to say: The musical is “magical and poignant. Beauty’s music just plain rocks.” The Hollywood Reporter also weighed in, calling the creative production “a beguiling tour de force that looks at love, sleep and time by setting the familiar fairy tale in an innovative performing context. ... Every element, from costume design to sound and lighting, has that rare combination of thorough professionalism and deeply devoted love of art and craft that distinguishes the merely excellent from the unforgettable.” n

BIOGRAPHIESPEABO BRYSON, a renowned R&B and Soul singer

who has been cited by Billboard for his “premier silky” vocals, has rocked various music charts with By the Time This Night Is Over, If Ever You’re in My Arms Again, and the Grammy- and Oscar-winning singles Beauty and the Beast (a duet with Céline Dion) and A Whole New World from Aladdin (a collaboration with Regina Belle). Throughout his career, Bryson has amassed a faithful fan base, critical acclaim, Gold albums, and a plethora of awards and honors. His stirring 2007 album Missing You became an anthem for the U.S. troops stationed in Iraq.

Singer-songwriter MELISSA MANCHESTER catapulted to national attention with Whenever I Call You Friend and Don’t Cry Out Loud, which were both nominated for Grammys. She cemented her standing in the music industry with a Grammy for the Pop hit You Should Hear How She Talks About You and garnered more acclaim for Walk on By. In 1998, the songstress released Joy, which The New York Times hailed as “a heartfelt Christmas album that sounds classic on first listen.” The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences honored Manchester with the Governor’s

Award for her contributions to the music industry. Fellow Grammy winner STEPHANIE MILLS broke

into show business with the lead role in the successful Broadway play The Wiz, an adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic book The Wizard of Oz. She was a steady presence on R&B and Soul music charts with the Grammy-winning Never Knew Love Like This Before, If I Were Your Woman, How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore?, the passionate ballad I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love, and her signature song Home. The New York Times called her voice an “extraordinary” mix of “the kittenish and the ferocious.”

The Orange County Register has credited Grammy winner JON SECADA as the “first Latin male crossover sensation [who] helped pave the way for the likes of Ricky Martin.” Secada, who began his music career as a backup singer and songwriter for the Miami Sound Machine, is known for the hits Just Another Day, Do You Believe in Us, Angel, and Window to My Heart. He has sold more than 20 million albums and has been honored as the “Best-Selling Latin-American Recording Artist” by the World Music Awards. n

Swingers, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (BBVD) intoxicated audiences and cast a spell on the American contemporary Swing scene, quickly becoming one of the genre’s hottest acts. The band’s performance in the movie led to a recording contract for the ensemble’s first album, the Grammy-nominated Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, which reached certified Gold status. The band – noted for its high-octane performances and the hits Go Daddy-O, You & Me & the Bottle Makes Three Tonight (Baby), and Mr. Pinstripe Suit – delivers spirited seasonal songs and Swing music in the lively BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY HOLIDAY SHOW.

The troupe followed up its first hit album with This Beautiful Life, which showcased classics such as Ol’ MacDonald and Big and Bad. BBVD’s 2004 album Everything You Want for Christmas received glowing reviews from Rolling

Stone, which praised the group for infusing “its retro hep-cat cool with a dose of Yule spirit.” The magazine cited the album’s hit singles, in particular Blue Christmas for its “dancehall flair”; and Jingle Bells (Cha Cha) and Party for Santa, both flavored with “a Latin accent, which adds sizzle to the mix.” Rolling Stone called BBVD’s version of We Three Kings “a warm, brass-only arrangement” and hailed the group’s “sashaying sax and percussion rendition of Jingle Bells.”

After more than a decade of nonstop touring, BBVD continues to treat Swing music fans to its stirring concoction of brassy swinging horns, crooning vocals, and wild Jazz rhythms. The band members, who are often seen sporting their “uniform” of fedoras and classic gentlemanly suits, consistently pack concert halls around the country. n

Dave KoZ’s smooth JaZZ Christmas

BIOGRAPHIESThe Christmas spirit takes center stage in DAVE KOZ’S

SMOOTH JAZZ CHRISTMAS as Smooth Jazz’s best and brightest talents treat audiences to timeless holiday classics.

The Seattle Times praised six-time Grammy nominee DAVE KOZ’s “clean, fluid sax lines, which have been heard on a variety of recordings, from U2’s R&B remix of When Love Comes to Town … to albums by Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Richard Marx, Gladys Knight, and Donny Osmond.” The Platinum-selling saxophonist-composer has sold millions of albums worldwide, including Lucky Man; the holiday CD A Smooth Jazz Christmas; and Saxophonic, which was nominated for a Grammy and an “Image Award” from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Since 1994, Koz has hosted the popular syndicated radio program The Dave Koz Radio Show, which spotlights the latest sounds in the Smooth Jazz genre.

Two-time Grammy nominee JONATHAN BUTLER broke racial barriers and stereotypes with his first single Lies, which was the first song by a black musician to be played on white radio stations in South Africa. The hit propelled Butler into the international limelight and he followed with

the instrumental Going Home, which was nominated for a Grammy, and the ballad Sarah, Sarah, which confirmed his position in popular music.

Guitarist JEFF GOLUB’s “Funk oriented approach coupled with his Rock influences provides a signature flavor of sorts and has made [him] one of the most recognized names around today,” said Jazz Review. Golub’s ability to augment his specialized sound into Contemporary Jazz shines through in a string of successful albums, including Grand Central, Temptation, Soul Sessions, and Avenue Blue, which Jazziz Magazine hailed for its “cool textures ranging from Hip Hop to atmospheric New Age with just enough Jazz tradition infused to cross genre.”

Recognized as Billboard’s No. One female Contempo-rary Jazz figures, KEIKO MATSUI has endeared herself to droves of fans and critics in the New Age and Smooth Jazz genres. Her unique musical formula blends Asian and West-ern influences, landing her albums Deep Blue, Sapphire, and Dream Walk on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts. Matsui received the Oasis Award for “Best Female Smooth Jazz Art-ist of the Year” in 1999 and 2000. n

ENTER THE REALM OF THE DRAGON

Imagine a wall dividing the West from the East. The mystery of that which lies beyond inspires a strangely exciting curiosity. As the fog parts, a single opening, round as the full moon, appears in the barrier. A lone figure stands silhouetted in the portal. An obstruction? An invasion? Or, rather, perhaps an invitation? Yes, that’s it. His lighted staff becomes a beacon, welcoming us to another world, another point of view. With slight apprehension and yet great anticipation, we enter the Moon Gate. The rich culture and traditions of the Chinese people have inspired every aspect of this production. Mostly, however, it is inspired by the performers. In basic form, the acrobatic acts and martial arts were created centuries ago and have been improved and perfected over time. We set out to complement these traditional visuals with a contemporary style of stage direction, at once preserving the time-honored traditions inherent in the material and also making the material accessible to audiences spanning diverse cultural and generational perspectives. ~ The Producers

BIOGRAPHIESTHE SHAOLIN DISCIPLES hail from Henen,

China, home of the world-famous Shaolin Temple, and Shandong, China, known as the birthplace of all Chinese martial arts. Kungfu was developed at the Shaolin Temple more than 1,500 years ago and quickly spread to other Bud-dhist monasteries in China.

These martial-arts masters began training at an early age at the Shaolin Kungfu Institute in Henan and the Mar-tial Arts Association of Shandong. The martial-arts masters hold numerous gold medals in international martial-arts competitions. In addition to lightening-fast fight sequences and traditional weapons demonstrations, the Shaolin Dis-ciples perform superhuman feats of Qigong in which their bodies become impervious to spears; beds of nails; and vari-ous rocks, bricks, sticks, and steel bars that are broken over their heads and other parts of their bodies.

Years of training and meditative techniques allow the Disciples to channel their Qi (loosely translated to “energy” or “breath of life”) to a particular part of the body through extreme concentration. Members of the Shaolin Disciples have appeared in the daily public demonstrations at the Shaolin Temple as well as on international tours, including Shaolin Wheel of Life. In addition to traditional forms and group numbers, some of the Shaolin Disciples specialties include: Dang, Chonglei - long-handled broadsword, eagle style; Fu, Jiachuan - breaking stone with head, bullwhip; Li, Jinzhong - balancing on three spears, double sword; Li, Yongsheng - balancing on single spear, nine-section whip; Liu, Songfei - spear-bending, iron arm/leg, flying spear; Tian, Jiguo - three-section staff, tiger style; Yu, Xiaolong - single sword, preying mantis style; Zhang, Guoming - breaking steel with head, double nine-section whip.

THE IMPERIAL ACROBATS OF CHINA hails from the Beijing Acrobatic Troupe, which is located near the ancient Imperial palace known as the Forbidden City. Historical records can trace the origins of Chinese acrobatics back thousands of years. Drawing on centuries of tradition, the Imperial Acrobats have perfected the skills handed down from generation to generation and created innovative move-ments. Their unsurpassed abilities as contortionists, hand balancers, foot jugglers, and aerialists are legendary. These graceful ladies from Beijing are also raising the bar for artistic presentation, with contemporary versions of traditional dances such as Red Streamers and Flowing Sleeves. The acro-bats begin at 5 or 6 by auditioning and being accepted into the prestigious troupe in China’s capital city. The coaches look for girls who are gifted with high levels of flexibility, bal-ance, and focus. Once selected, they train many hours each day in the same way as Olympic gymnasts and figure skaters. All of their meals and academic courses are at the acrobatic school. After several years of establishing the base acrobatic skills, each performer shows an aptitude for one or more acts. Once her act is selected, she will spend years perfecting it. The students who rise to the top of the class are offered jobs as the performing acrobats of the troupe and earn the chance to travel the world. In addition to the many traditional and updated Chinese dances, The Imperial Acrobats specialties include: Gu, Ying - contortion with candles, carpet spinning; Wang, Lu - single-hand stand act, partner hand-to-hand; Wang, Sinan - foot juggling with umbrellas, carpet spinning; Wu, Yumeng - aerial fabric acrobatics, partner hand-to-hand.

Trainer) was born in mainland China. After earning the title “First Class Acrobat of China,” Zhao gained international recognition. At age 11, she was featured in a gala perfor-mance for President Richard M. Nixon on his historic visit to Beijing, which established political relations between the United States and China. She then toured 48 countries with her award-winning acrobatic acts. In 1986, Zhao won the Gold Medal and the “Prize of the President of the Republic” at the International Festival of the Circus of Tomorrow in Paris, France. She was recruited for the first North American tour of Cirque du Soleil. Following the tour, she performed at many famous venues, including Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Circus Circus. She was granted American citizenship for her “Extraordinary Ability” as a performer. After a long and successful performing career, she became the producer and principal partner of MPY Inter-national in 2001. Since then, she has brought several highly acclaimed Chinese acrobatic troupes to the United States. For Jungua: Descendents of the Dragon, Zhao returned to her roots at the Beijing Acrobatic Troupe to recruit some of the finest female acrobats in China.

EDDY MCGUIRE (Director, Creator, Producer, and Production Designer) began his career as a street performer, sketch comedian, musical parodist, circus clown, and comic. From juggling on stilts to playing songs on a tin whistle with a glass of liquid on his head, his early focus was almost entirely on the comic arts. After performing throughout the United States for 12 years, he became an artistic director and administrator. McGuire began at Circus Circus Hotel and Casino in Reno, where he rose from performer to artistic di-rector. He developed a fascination with the dramatic tension achievable through the circus arts and formed a well-founded appreciation for the Chinese acrobat’s superhuman abili-ties. He directed numerous shows for casinos, performing arts festivals, and conventions. McGuire was a well-known entertainment executive at casinos in Las Vegas and Reno for 13 years before founding GlobalShows Entertainment in 2003. He has served on judging panels for international acrobat and comic arts festivals and was the artistic director on tour for Salto Natale Synfunia in Zurich and Bern, Switzer-land, which was produced by Gregory Knie and created and directed by Guy Caron. A valued friend and mentor, Caron is the Emmy-winning director of Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion, as well as founder of the National Circus School of Quebec and a longtime creative director for Cirque du Soleil. n
