It is with very mixed feelings that I write this lastarticle as the Ohio State Grange Master. I remember verywell the first day in this position as if it were just yesterday, and now, six years later, my thoughts can’t help but drifttoward the last day.

I was fortunate to have a very good transition intothis position from my predecessor, Viola Wayne. Violahas been a personal friend for decades, and she spent somedays here in the office going over the many tasks, procedures, and other actions pertinent to the positions. Atthis point I have no idea who my successor will be, but Iam making that same transition offer, if he or she wishes.

As I reflect back over the past half dozen years, many thoughts enter my mind. On my resume I had postedprior to being elected, I stated that I would try to serveOhio’s Grangers, and I have attempted to do that. Today’stechnology has made it much easier to stay connected thanit was just a decade ago. Laptops, smart phones, and ‘callforwarding’ have been crucial in allowing it to happen. Iapologize for any shortcomings, and I hope they have notbeen too significant in your eyes. This has truly been alearning experience for me, but I don’t know how muchmore education I can tolerate at my age!

I now wish to thank you, Ohio’s Grangers on thewhole, for the support you have given me the past six years.I thank you for the work you have done on your local leveland for your cooperation in working together, not only inproblem areas, but also in more pleasant dealings. And,most of all, thanks so much for just being the great Grangersyou are!

I especially thank (1) my directors who have workedso diligently as they also served Ohio’s Grangers well, (2)my deputies, who have truly been my right and left hand asthey served me and you by carrying out the work of OhioState Grange in their local areas, (3) members of ourexecutive board, who have been wonderful to work with inmeetings as they discuss well the pending issues and makegood decisions as a group and offer direction when needed,(4) my fellow State Officers for their support and assistanceat State Grange Conventions, and (5) the many of you whoassist with convention duties, prior to, during, and followingour annual state conventions. ‘All the above’ have been awonderful part of our State Grange Leadership team, and Iam indeed grateful for all you have done!

We are moving from our two story house inDefiance into a ranch style house six miles away in the

very small community of Ayersville. Our address there is13802 Fruit Ridge Road, Defiance, OH 43512. We arelooking forward to retirement, finally, and being able tohave more time to keep very busy doing more of the thingswe really want to do! It is our plan to maintain a closerelationship with Grange work at all levels and to stayconnected with this great organization. Linda and I againexpress our deepest thanks for the wonderful things youhave done for and with us. Grange friends are trulywonderful people!

Ohio will be represented well at the NationalGrange Convention in Sandusky in November. Roger andTheresa Hogue will participate in the National GrangeLeadership program as Ohio’s Young Couple, while AngelaStevenson and Corey Shiltz, will represent Ohio in thatprogram as our Youth Ambassadors. Jennifer Lanstrum hasthe honor of being the Master of the National Grange YouthOfficer’s team which will open Friday morning’s delegatebody session at 8:30. Later, in the evening, Brenda Widder,Lisa Tharp, and Les Widder will perform in the Eveningof Excellence program, singing ‘Wonderful Grace of Jesus’.Several Ohio Grangers will also be host committee membersand host committee volunteers, doing some of the basicground work for hosting the National Grange Convention.

In closing, as these upcoming seasons will soon beupon us, probably before we are ready, Linda and I wishyou a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas. These hopefully will be wonderful experiences as you spendquality time with your family and friends, and may youcelebrate in the true meaning of the seasons. May yourNew Year be that wonderful time to glance at the pastwhile you build for the future, learning from previousexperiences.

Deaf Activities - Groundedand Ready for the Challenge!

The holiday season is here again. It comes aroundfaster each year; at least it does for me!

You should have received your Deaf Activitiespacket from your Deputy by now. Hopefully, you havematerials to help with your standing reports andprogramming. The Report Form is included, keep it handyto fill in as you do the items. It makes it easier at the end ofthe year for reporting.

The 2013-2014 year-end report will be in the nextissue. Thank you to ALL for a successful Deaf Activitiesyear.

I will continue with, “Is Your Hearing an Insightinto Your Total Body Health”, as I promised in the Sept/Oct Ohio Granger magazine. We’ll learn what researchsays about hearing loss and your body.

BRAIN: The correlation between dementia andhearing loss has been well documented in study after study, but perhaps less well known is that older individuals withhearing loss experience a greater rate of brain shrinkage.

EFFECTS: Although the brain naturally shrinkswith age, the rate of atrophy increase by an additional cubiccentimeter per year, in those with at least a mild (25 Db)hearing loss - and shrinkage occurs in regions associatedwith processing sound, speech, memory, and balance.

PREVENTION: John Hopkins researchers who rana January 2014 study determined that the atrophy may occurdue to a lack of stimulation of the auditory nerve, whichmakes it all the more important to consistently wear, clean, maintain, and update your hearing technology.

BLOOD: Sickle-cell anemia is known to causefatigue and pain. Misshapen red blood cells restrict bloodflow, which makes delivering oxygen to various organs, including the cochlea (the organ in the inner ear mostresponsible for hearing ability), more difficult.

EFFECTS: Much like diabetes and heart disease, the impacts of sickle cell on hearing are slow to developand disrupt hearing more over time.

PREVENTION: Treatments can prevent blood cellsfrom sickling, helping the anemia and lowering the risk oforgan damage through improved blood flow.

HEART: Many of the same unhealthy patterns ofbehavior that affect the heart - poor nutrition, lack ofexercise, and smoking, to name a few - are related to lossof hearing, and it’s no surprise why: hardening or narrowingof the arteries due to heart disease restricts blood flow tothe cochlea.

EFFECTS: These restrictions can starve the cochleaof oxygen, which is necessary for healthy cells. Hearingloss may also be a predictor of heart disease, as the innerear is so sensitive to blood flow that possible abnormalitiesin the cardiovascular system are more easily recognizedhere than in other less sensitive parts of the body.

PREVENTION: Taking better care of your tickercan not only increase your life span, but can preventcompounded hearing loss as well.

PANCREAS: Diabetics typically have impairedblood flow, like individuals with heart disease, which cancause damage to the delicate inner ear.

EFFECT: When diabetes is untreated, narrowblood vessels or abnormal blood flow can prevent the cochleafrom receiving blood and can harm the body’s ability toflush toxins from the inner ear.

PREVENTION: A 2008 study performed by theNational Institutes of Health and published in the Annals ofInternal Medicine reported that hearing loss is about twiceas common in adults with diabetes - so be sure to keep upwith treatments!

CIRCULATION: Support for the idea that stressmay be a factor in hearing loss and tinnitus is on the rise.

EFFECT: According to one study from, the NIH,stress leads to vasoconstriction, decreasing oxygen deliveryto all areas of the body, including the inner ear.Unfortunately, two of the most common stress relievers alsocause vasoconstriction, cigarettes and alcohol.

PREVENTION: If stress or anxiety have caughtup to you, exercise, yoga, and meditation are all provenhealthy alternatives for stress relief and improved circulation.

Hope you enjoy the Holidays with good health, goodfood, family gatherings, fun and joy.

Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas.

Thank You

I want to express my thanks for the many cards, prayers, thoughts, and concerns from so many of youfollowing my surgery. I am recovering satisfactorily at thispoint, but I still have a little ways to go. The pathologyreport was good but indicated that my surgery had takencare of what would have developed into serious issues.

Thanks again. Linda Brumbaugh

Autumn has arrived, the leaves are turning, and thetemperature is dropping. Where did summer go? We werethankful to work with theYouth again after many years- yesmany years. Thank you to All the youth who volunteered to bepart of the opening team. Your participation and interest inthe ritualism of our organization is encouraging to all whowitness your service to the Grange. To all the Brothers andSisters who assisted in the youth room or with any of theactivities and behind the scenes, please know your laborswere much appreciated.

On behalf of all of the Ohio State Grangers we wantto Thank- Young Couple Roger and Theresa Hogue, YouthAmbassadors Corey Shiltz and Angela Stevenson forrepresenting our organization this past year. youth to participate.Ohio will be hosting the Eastern Regional Youth/

Junior conference April 10-12, 2015, at Friendly HillsGrange camp. We are sure the new State Master and Youthdirectors will need your assistance and a great attendancefrom Ohio. We know from attending past Eastern Regionalconferences— Ohio is noted for holding conferences thatare definitely informative, educational and filled with goodfood and fellowship. Let’s have a record attendance.Support your youth and send them for a great time andwill meet youth from several other states. The youth gettogether as drill team from Ohio for the states’ competition. We can out shine all the other states with our winningyouth drills.

As we read over the theme for “Grange Youth:Presenting Opportunities to Build Yourselves”, we canrelate to this theme; as a past State and National YoungCouple, as a past state officer, as parents of children thatgrew up in the youth program and now as Grandparentswith Grandchildren in the Junior program and only severalyears down the road to entering youth age activities. Weare sure our State Master and First Lady share these samefeelings as their children were active in Jr and Youthprograms with their Grandchildren enter the youthprograms. What an opportunity to excel with the programsthe Grange offers.

Our question to our youth as you read the 2015theme is how do you take advantage of the Grange? Howdo you get the opportunity to build yourself, be a leader, and exceed.

Our hopes would be for you, the Youth of Ohio toget involved in Grange activities and programs availablethru Ohio and National Grange Youth programs.

A new year is upon us. Let’s make it a New Year’sresolution to take the youth in your Grange under yourwing. Encourage them, support them, help build themup. Give them opportunities to build themselves.

Thank you for allowing us the honor and joy ofserving in the Grange.

We wish you all Blessed Holidays filled with Familyand Friends.

“COMMUNITY SERVICE -MEETING THE CHALLENGE OFSERVICE IN TODAY’S WORLD”

Greetings from the office of Lecturer. Novemberand December can be easy months for new Lecturers. There are traditional program themes - Election Day,Veteran’s Day, and Thanksgiving Day in November. The147th Birthday of the Grange comes on December 4. ManyGranges only meet in the early part of the month. Howabout a big Birthday Party: start with the Grange, add anyof your members who may have a December birthday;add any Presidents and/or celebrities and conclude withthe birthday of Christ. This could be a very specialprogram. If you start with a carry-in meal before themeeting or just refreshments after, be sure to have a“Birthday Cake.” Make your program festive and if youhave children at your meeting - have something fun forthem to do.

For November, please don’t forget the Veterans inyour community. Work with your Community ServiceCommittee and have a part in, or sponsor, a special eventin their honor. Present the history of Armistice Day andhow it became Veterans Day.

As you get to know your members better, you willdiscover hobbies, interests, and even vacation trips thatcan be the basis of Grange programs. As I have said before,be imaginative. Programs should not be just poems andreadings. We all enjoy good humor and skits that are welldone. Games and quizzes will be received well in mostGranges, but maybe not in some. Include music when youcan. If you don’t have a regular pianist, perhaps you canfine someone who will tape music for you. I have severaltapes that may be borrowed and copied.

I wish all of you a great Grange year. Be sure toread future issues of this magazine. Your new State Lecturerwill have new ideas and information for you. My term ofoffice has been a wonderful experience and I thank youall for your assistance and cooperation. Best wishes for awonderful, blessed holiday season from my Committee -JoAnn, Karen, Lee, Karen & Jim - and from Harold &me.

Congratulations on a great year of CommunityService. As I read the reports that were submitted, I wasvery proud to be a Granger in Ohio. We had well over 60reports — more than enough to qualify for National Grangerecognition and support. My summary of projects wasincluded in the packets that were given out at the StateGrange Convention. This summary is made not to ‘showoff’ what others have done, but to share information andperhaps give your Grange an idea for a new project. Thenew Director will have more ideas for you also.

Every Grange can do something by way ofCommunity Service. Check with a local nursing home - dothey do crafts? Can they use extra yarn, felt or fabric scraps, buttons, etc.? Do they need bibs or lap robes? Can yourladies do a prayer shawl ministry? When individualsvolunteer at the hospital or school, make sure that theyinform them that they are there on behalf of the Grange.

Then the Grange can count that as CommunityService. Clip food coupons for military families, savegreeting card fronts for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children (Thisis not St. Jude’s Hospital.) When at Wal-Mart for groceries, pick up a pair of tube socks to give to Flying Horse Farms. There may be different State Grange Make-a-DifferenceDay projects next year, but your Grange can continue tochoose your own projects.

As I write this, we have not yet had our State GrangeConvention so I cannot announce this year’s placings in theCommunity Service Project for National Grange. They willbe listed in the next issue along with the Gold, Silver, andRoyal Purple Star reports.

I thank all of you for all of the wonderful effort youhave made in your community on behalf of your Grange. And for all of the cooperation you have given me duringmy time as Community Service Director. You have mademe very proud to be a Granger. May you all continue toserve and you will be blessed in your work.

Have a great Grange year,Dorothy

Do you know Him?Christmas has always been one of my favorite

holidays. Not only because of the colors, smells, sights, music, time with family & friends but MOST importantlythe birth of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. There areso many different descriptions of who Jesus is.

Just recently, I heard a sermon by the late Dr. S.M.Lockridge that was given at a Moody Bible InstituteFounder’s Week in the early 1980’s. He shared with thecongregants That’s My King. The following is just a shortsnippet of it. “The Bible says my King is a seven-way king,He’s the King of the Jews, He’s the King of Israel, He’s theKing of Righteousness, He’s the King of the Ages, He’sthe King of Heaven, He’s the King of Glory, He’s the Kingof kings, and He’s the Lord of lords. That’s my King.Well....I wonder, do you know Him? . . . Well, myKing....He is the King! He’s the key to knowledge, He’sthe wellspring of wisdom, He’s the doorway of deliverance,He’s the pathway of peace, He’s the roadway ofrighteousness, He’s the highway of holiness, He’s thegateway of glory, Do you know Him? Well, His office ismanifold, His promise is sure....and His light is matchless,His goodness is limitless, His mercy is everlasting, Hislove never changes, His word is enough, His grace issufficient, His reign is righteous, And His yoke is easy, and his burden is light, I wish I could describe Him toyou, but He’s indescribable — Yes He is!? He is God! He’sincomprehensible, He’s invincible, He’s irresistible, Well, you can’t get Him out of your mind, You can’t get Him offof your hand, You can’t out live Him, and you can’t livewithout Him. . . . .The Pharisees couldn’t stand Him, butthey found out they couldn’t stop Him, Pilate couldn’t findany fault in Him, The witnesses couldn’t get theirtestimonies to agree, Herod couldn’t kill Him, Deathcouldn’t handle Him, and the grave couldn’t hold Him,Yeah!!! that’s my King, that’s my King.” For a completeaudio of the sermon, go to this link www.moodyradio.org/radioplayer.aspx?episode=141633, it will be well worthyour time!

Wow! That is quite a description of who Jesus is ~more than just a baby born in Bethlehem in Israel during atime we call Christmas! As Dr. Lockridge asks severaltimes in his sermon “Do You Know Him?” Have a blessedThanksgiving and Christmas Season!

“God always gives His best to those who leave thechoice with Him.” ~ Jim Elliot

Both kennels willhave our name and contact information displayed for everyoneto see, for a whole year. Thank you for your support!Winter Camp

Winter Camp will be held at Friendly Hills the sameweekend as youth camp, January 16-18, 2015. There willbe a Saturday option for the young adults to spend the daywith us on January 17. The delegates voted to include theyoung adults in the half off deal, as long as your registrationand money is to OSG Office BEFORE the deadline. Thedeal only applies for those who wish to stay the wholeweekend, not those who wish to participate in the Saturdayoption. We also discussed going to the mall for laser tagand miniature golf, instead of bowling on Saturday morning. We are still working out the details for this, so please bearwith us.Day Trips

We had twenty-four Grangers and friends participatein the trip to Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs, Ohio.We fed the goats and played games. Everyone sat down fora nice meal together, and then we were able to get some ofYoung’s famous homemade ice cream. John Lithgow, actor, was visiting Young’s Dairy that day with his family, too. Some of us saw him, but nobody bothered him for a picture.

INFORMATION BOOTHSI would like to thank everyone

who took a shift or two at the OhioState Fair and the Farm ScienceReview. These informational boothsare an important way to educate thepublic about the Grange and that westill exist. Every volunteer heardcomments like “my grandparentsbelong to the Grange, are they stillaround?” Or “what does the garagedo” {not a misspell}? “Isn’t theGrange only for farmers?” You cansee, Grangers are informing the publicat these booths every year.

Informational booths are onlyone tool used to promote the Grange. The major tool in promoting theGrange and gaining membership isYOU.

Have you ever joined anorganization that you knew nothingabout? Would you join an organizationwhen asked by a complete stranger? These are questions we must askourselves before we start trying torecruit new members.Ø Have the members write downpeople that they think would be apotential member.Ø Establish a membershipcommittee and ask them to format theselling points of your Grange, StateGrange, and National Grange.Ø Send an invitation to visit yourGrange, followed up by a personalinvitation. Notice I said invitation toa meeting, not to join. One step at atime.Ø Don’t set your hopes on onespecific age group. Diversify the ageof your Grange gradually.

Pike Grange #1669Stark County

David C. Ross joined Pike Grangeon May 25, 2006. He immediately becameinvolved with being an active member andhelping in many ways. At community dinnershe and a co-worker made delicious mashedpotatoes. He always made sure he was partof the “preparation crew and clean-upcrew”after any event. He could be countedon to cook breakfast at the Pike Grange foodstand at the Stark County Fair. David tookover the project of making sure a recycledumpster was kept on the Grange premisesfor the convenience of members and localresidents to recycle paper. Through histenacity, guidance, and success of the project,Pike Grange was able to make a yearly, generous, donation to “Wishes Can Happen” from the proceeds of paper recycling. When asked to assist in any project at the Grange, David always cheerfully gaveof his time and effort with a ready smile and a happy go lucky “we can do this”attitude. He held several offices with Pike Grange the most recent being Treasurer.Again he was very accurate and conscientious about the responsibility of thatoffice.

Sadly, on July 23, 2014, David lost histwo-year battle with cancer and passed away atthe age of 64 years. It was his wish that he becremated, no formal calling hours, but ratherthere be a designated time for family and friendsto gather at his beloved Pike Grange for a timeof fellowship and to enjoy a meal. Abiding byhis wishes, Grange members provided food, butthe many attendees at the meal brought covereddishes and there was an abundance of deliciousfood items. It was truly an outpouring of love, respect, and admiration for this dedicatedGrange member who so loved his Grange thathe chose it to be the place for his family and friends to say their final goodbyeand to share in the compassion and love David had for the eight years he waswith Pike Grange. Rest in Peace, dear Granger.

David is honored in2013 as Pike Grange’s“Granger of the Year. Picturedwith David is his wife Stephine, his mother, Antoinette and JudyCarrick presenting him hisaward.

Successful Archives Workday

Many thanks go to those who helped at thearchives workday in September. Norma and NormanMetzger and Donna and Larry McKinniss sortedlabeled, shelved, and documented locations all thesecretary books at the state office. At this point, allare done! They also did other general sorting andshelving of other Grange items in the basement.

Upstairs, Daryl and Kathy Flowers, Lindaand Mildred Teisinger, Debra Hamilton, and JoanWhite worked on locating valuable Grange historyitems from four old ledger books from the 1870’sand 1880’s. They pulled over 1,700 Grange statuschanges from those books. That data has been mergedwith the current Archives master spread sheet, whichbrings it to nearly 7,500 total lines.

Again, their work is certainly appreciated!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving,Merry Christmas andProsperous New Year!
