A message from Steve Walker
2009 Campaign Chair
Dear Friends of United Way: 2008 was a challenging year. On many occasions during the year I commented on "the thrill of victory versus the agony of defeat" as Jim McKay used to say on the 60's TV sports show, Wide World of Sports. Some of you will remember the alpine skier veering off the ski jump to a hard landing below. It was my job to do everything I could to assure our campaign would soar off the end of the jump to a 10 point landing. Thanks to every one of you we not only achieved but surpassed our 2009 campaign goal of $1,425,000. and for that effort I am deeply grateful. More importantly, the organizations and persons who constitute the recipients of your hard labors are also grateful as they can now go into our community knowing that they are equipped to provide the services that are required by those who are most in need in our community. We are fortunate to live in a place called Morgantown, WV, a caring community that answers the call of helping our fellow citizens through United Way year after year. This year's theme "Lead the Way..." reflected the responsibility of both individuals and groups to step up to the task of doing what needed to be done in the best interests of our community. Despite the challenges the year brought our way, we achieved great success. It has been a privilege serving as 2009 United Way Campaign Chair and working side-by-side with you, the generous citizens of a great community. Sincerely, Steve Walker 2009 United Way Campaign Chair

A message from Tina Zeff
United Way Executive Director
Dear United Way Friend:
Thank you for leading the way to success. We achieved and surpassed our $1,425,000 goal to fund 28 local health and human service agencies in Monongalia and Preston Counties. Be-cause of you, United Way continues to fund agencies that can offer safe before and after school care, keep at risk youth engaged in school, prevent homeless-ness and create economic opportunities for our most at risk residents. Because of our economic times and due to the continued increased need in services, it is even more vital that we work together to strategically raise and allocate resources for continued change in our communities Together, we are effectively and efficiently leading the way to lasting change for our future generations. On behalf of all of us that are apart of the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties, thank you for leading the way to success. Regards, Tina Zeff Executive Director

lead v.tr. 7. To be foremost in or among Merriam-Webster Online Edition
Dear Friends: Under the direction of the United Way’s staff, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors, I am happy to report that the United Way saw a strong financial end to 2008. Your United Way had a successful year managing available financial resources even though the year 2008 was a difficult one economically for our community. Even through difficult economic times, we are rewarded for upholding high standards of accountability as we continue to exceed campaign goals. We will, however, never take this trust lightly and will continue to make every effort to efficiently use donors’ contributions. The board and staff continue to work hard to minimize operational costs and effectively manage cash flow. The resources that are raised by United Way volunteers and staff each year are carefully and responsibly managed. A key goal for United Way is to ensure the ongoing sustainability of our investment in the community. It is essential that we meet our commitments, as the services, programs and initiatives we support are vital. For many agencies, United Way is the single largest source of long term funding. It is anticipated that the upcoming year will continue to present financial challenges; however, your United Way remains committed to the employment of the resources entrusted to its stewardship to achieve maximum benefit to our community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and the Board of Directors for all of your support. I would also like to thank the United Way finance committee for their dedicated efforts during the year. In addition, special thanks to the United Way staff for their commitment to keeping administrative and fundraising costs low. Sincerely, Craig Behr Treasurer

lead v.tr. 3. To inspire the conduct of Merriam-Webster Online Edition
Dear United Way Friend:
The Mission of the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties is to enhance the quality of life in our community by helping those in need. In 2008, the United Way Volunteer Connection helped meet this mission and Led the Way by engaging volunteers through community projects and special events. Business volunteers working through the Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) Led the Way by participating in monthly service and collection projects. During July, CVC members collected 300 backpacks for Christian Help’s annual back to school distribution for local children. Youth volunteers working through the Youth Volunteer Connection Led the Way by organizing and participating in many service projects. One project was preparing and serving a winter meal during a community wide homeless count. Many other volunteers Led the Way by giving time, energy and talents while participating in special events such as the Blue and Gold Mine Sale, the Greatest Garage Sale, Day of Caring and Random Acts of Kindness. The Volunteer Connection also Led the Way through our Referral Service, Education and Training Programs, and student and adult volunteer recognition efforts. Volunteers: Leading the Way. Volunteers: The Heart of Our Community.
