Competitor’s Trend - COMPRESSION TECHNOLOGY
Adidas - C l ima TechFit™ featur ing Powerweb Technology
The backgroundThe upper body is leaning forward, the shoulders slowly drooping, the arm and leg movements are
not as rounded as they once were. Sounds familiar? For athletes at least, these are clear signs of
fatigue building up. With drooping shoulders and forward-leaning upper body, it is more difficult to
breathe in and out, which means less oxygen intake. The “non-rounded” movements lack efficiency,
which means more energy is wasted with every metre.
The chal lengeWith this problem in mind, the adidas innovation team set to work. If – with the help of new technology, a
new suit, the fatigue phase could be delayed, this should result in considerable performance enhancement
both for short and long distances.
Compression and energy managementCompression supports leg muscles and reduces muscle vibration and oscillation, thus reducing energy loss and muscle
fatigue. The Powerweb technology serves as energy management. The simple mechanism: Follow the natural movements
of the muscles and enhance the movements. TPU power bands embodied in the suit along key muscle groups contract and
expand together with the muscles and thereby store energy when stretching and return energy when contracting back.
The achievementAdditionally, the Powerweb bands link the legs with the power centre of the body, the abdominal muscles, and also with
the upper body. On the one hand, through the interaction of all muscles, greater efficiency is achieved, while on the other
hand athletes feel a support function which automatically helps them to maintain a more upright position.
”We started developing the suit five years ago,” James Lamont explains. ”Firstly for athletes in the sprint sector, and taking
it from there we have continually expanded and improved the concept.” One of the first prototypes of the suit caused a big
surprise back in 2003, when Kim Collins became World Sprint Champion in the 100 metres in Paris.
The testsOf course the advantages of the new suit have also been thoroughly tested. In controlled laboratory tests conducted
together with the University of Calgary, an average 5.3% improvement in energy output and 1.1% faster sprint time was
measured over 30 metres. But most importantly, the testers registered a 1.3% reduction in oxygen consumption on test
subjects wearing the new suit. A clear indication that the onset of fatigue is delayed.

BACKGROUND - FIELD OF INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention The present invention generally relates to an upper body strengthening apparatus and, more particularly, to an elastic rubber tube with a triangular fixture, configured in aunique design, which loops around the shoulders and can be worn against the chest or the back, designed to strengthen a user's upper body by maintaining a constant andcontinuous tension on those groups of support muscles.
2. Discussion of the Related Art A strong upper body is the foundation to good health and well-being. Good posture helpsto maintain a healthy back, it holds the body upright, improves balance and enablesincreased power of arm and leg movements. This culminates in maintaining optimum mobil-ity and protection from the risk of over extending.
The benefits of elastic resistance have been proven to have quick and effective results inbuilding muscular strength. The device outlined in Claim 1 is based on the fundamentals ofelastic resistance. In studies participants using elastic resistance training, were able toincrease their strength from ten to thirty percent in a short term. Added benefits of thistraining are: increased muscle mass, increased power, improved mobility, improved balance, improved gait, and increased endurance.
Related art systems to improve posture generally are braces and splints. This device isdesigned as a wearable body strengthening and exercise device in direct opposition tocurrent posture type improvement apparatus which do not create strength, but rather, become a crutch overtime, weakening the body.
By way of example, U.S. Pat. No. 5,067,484 by Miemstra-Paez shows a related posturetraining device. In this device, there are two straps adapted to loop around a shoulder of a user and a centrally located rear pouch. The rear pouch is designed to hold weights. This device is based on counter weight or traction and not elastic resistance, and can onlybe worn on the back, limiting its effectiveness.
By way of example, U.S. Pat. No. 6,991,611 by Rhee shows a related art system. In thisdevice a fabric strap pulls the shoulders back thereby straightening a user’s posture. Thisdevice acts as a brace, and does not build strength or affect any of the muscle structurepositively.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention offers an improvement over the prior art by first and foremost utilizing theeffective science of elastic resistance to build muscular strength. In addition, the designfeatures a complete upper body strengthening system by utilizing 2 exercise positions.(See Fig. 1 & Fig 4)
33
An advantage of the present invention over the prior art is that it provides continuousstrength building as well as a range of features and benefits to the user. As outlined inclaim #8 features include: lightweight, washable, wearable over or under clothing, sitting, standing or walking, easy to use, affordable, long lasting and durable. The benefits outlinedin claim #8 include: instant improvement of posture, longterm posture improvement, over-all increased upper body strength, improvement of breathing, less stress on lower back, better digestion, prevention of physical repetitive stress and added confidence.
