The New Jersey Athletic Conference was founded in 1985when the New Jersey State Athletic Conference, a men’ssports conference, merged with their corresponding insti-tutions in the Jersey Athletic Conference, a women’ssports conference. The ten founding member institutionswere Kean College (now University), Montclair StateCollege (now University), Jersey City State College (nowNew Jersey City University), Glassboro State College(now Rowan University), Ramapo College of New Jersey,Rutgers University-Camden, Rutgers University-Newark,Stockton State College (now The Richard StocktonCollege of New Jersey), Trenton State College (now TheCollege of New Jersey), and William Paterson College(now University).

While meeting as a joint body to vote on broader policyand procedure matters, the conference continued to oper-ate with separate legislative divisions governing men’sand women’s sports. Throughout its evolution, the confer-ence has been guided by the following operating princi-ples:

*To legislate through by-laws, policies, procedures, andethical guidelines the administration of the intercollegiateathletic programs of conference members.*To promote intercollegiate athletics as an integral part ofthe total education program.*To protect the welfare of the student-athlete.*To foster and uphold the highest standards of athleticcompetition and academic integrity.*To support the principles and practices of Title IX andgender equity.*To encourage allied membership in appropriate state, regional and national organizations.*To cooperate with other amateur athletic organizations inpromoting intercollegiate athletics.

Championships were originally offered in twelve sports:men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, women’s volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s ten-nis, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, wrestling, and football. Today, the NJAC hosts seventeen champi-onships: ten for women (cross country, basketball, fieldhockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, volleyball)and seven for men (cross country, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, indoor track and field, outdoor track andfield). The conference ranks as one of the strongest inNCAA Division III, with member schools capturing forty

national championships over the past sixteen years, andnumerous final and semifinal round appearances. Morethan 550 NJAC student-athletes have received All-America honors. In 1999-2000, two NJAC members TheCollege of New Jersey and Rowan University, scored inthe top ten of the prestigious Sears Cup rankings.

In 1999, the New Jersey Athletic Conference added threenew chapters to its history. In May, it hired its first com-missioner. In September, the conference amended itsconstitution to allow affiliate members on a sport-by-sportbasis and accepted the State University of New York atCortland as its first affiliate member for the sport of foot-ball. And in October, it revised its constitution and bylawsto merge the men’s and women’s sports divisions into asingle decision-making body; to create committees whichmore directly address the needs and interests of the stu-dent-athletes and faculty athletic representatives; and tostrengthen the partnership between the office of the pres-ident and the department of athletics on each of our mem-ber campuses.

Ramapo College of New JerseyRamapo College of New JerseyRanked by U.S. News & World Report among the top two comprehensive colleges in the north, Ramapo College of New Jersey issometimes mistaken for a private college. This is, in part, due to its unique interdisciplinary academic structure, its size of around5,500 students, and its pastoral setting.

Ramapo offers bachelors’ degrees in the arts, business, humanities, social sciences and the sciences, as well as in professional stud-ies, which include teacher certification at the elementary and secondary levels, and social work. The College also offers four graduateprograms: a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, a Master of Science in Educational Technology, a Master of Business Administration anda Master of Science in Nursing. In addition, the College offers a joint Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in ClinicalLaboratory Science, and Bachelor of Biology/Doctor of Physical Therapy with UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry of NewJersey), and a joint Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Chiropractic with New York Chiropractic College.

Undergraduate students choose to concentrate their studies in one of five schools: Administration and Business; American andInternational Studies; Contemporary Arts; Theoretical and Applied Science; and Social Science and Human Services. Of the 600course offerings and forty academic programs, the most popular are business administration, communications, psychology, nursing, information systems and computer science. In addition, more than 700 students are enrolled in courses that prepare them for teachercertification. Ramapo boasts an average student/faculty ratio of 17:1. The average class size of twenty-two affords students the oppor-tunity to develop close ties to Ramapo’s exceptional faculty, of whom more than ninety-five percent hold final degrees in their field.

A construction boom during recent years has resulted in the completion of the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing andVisual Arts, two residence halls and an apartment complex, along with the renovation of classrooms and computer labs. The BerrieCenter, which houses performance theaters, art galleries, and specialized spaces devoted to fine arts, computer art, photography, the-ater, dance and music, is host to concerts, theater productions, art exhibitions and lectures. These events are open to the campuscommunity and the community at large. With more than eighty-five percent of freshmen and more than fifty percent of all full-time stu-dents choosing to live on campus, ground has recently been broken on a 300-bed suite style residence, and plans are underway tobuild additional residences. Construction is also underway for the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center.
