Central Piedmont is a career focused college. We are proud to serve one of the fastest grow-ing communities in America. As you may know, the demand for our services continues to soar, while the state struggles to balance its financialobligations. That was never more evident than inthe past fiscal year.

In my view, the community colleges acrossNorth Carolina are the economic engines thatwill keep our state moving forward. NorthCarolina has an historic commitment to provideeducation that is academically, geographicallyand financially accessible to our citizens. Weare obligated to provide our children and grand-children access to the knowledge and skillsthat will shape their futures — our future — asa community.

I want to especially thank our business andcommunity partners for standing with us thispast year. They joined our call for full funding andprovided great leadership and financial supportby adopting classes when state revenues werebeing reduced. Your show of support enabledthe college to keep the doors of opportunityopen to hundreds of students.

At CPCC, students who want to enter the work-place will find the programs and services theyneed. Those who are already employed can addnew skills so they may grow in their current jobsor enter new careers. Entrepreneurs will discov-er how to start and grow their own businesses. Our college transfer programs provide the firsttwo years of education for those who wish tocontinue at a four-year college or university.

We’ll be ramping up soon for a major capitalcampaign and we hope you’ll assist us as weleave a legacy for future generations in this com-munity.

letter from the chairman of the board

Central Piedmont will celebrate 40 years of outstanding service in 2003. Since 1963, thecollege has impacted the lives of more than 1 million people in Mecklenburg County andthis region.

Last year, CPCC became the educational gateway for thousands of men and women inCharlotte who wanted to enhance their skills, explore new careers, or return to collegeseeking a degree, diploma or certificate. The college is preparing workers who protect yoursafety, help train your school teachers, care for your children, keep you healthy, prepare yourfood and offer you a wide range of arts and cultural activities that enrich the community.

Even in a tough budget year, CPCC kept the doors of opportunity open to thousands ofyour friends and neighbors. I commend the faculty and staff at the College for their contin-ued hard work. The Board of Trustees and I are proud to serve the College and believe thiscommunity needs the College now more than ever. Congratulations!

from the foundation president

The years 2002 and 2003 will be remembered by all American citizens as a critical-ly historic time in the history of our nation. September 11, 2001, was an inconceiv-able jolt; and out of that, enormous restructuring of our American economy, freeenterprise growth and massive shifting of our nation’s priorities—all are causingmajor shifts in our lifestyles.

Central Piedmont Community College is the solution to many of these issues in thePiedmont region of the Carolinas. We have matured to become the top leaderamong community colleges in workforce development, having received nationalrecognition from the United States General Accounting Office; Ford Foundation,Jobs for the Future; and the Newcomen Excellence Award for 2002. We are thelargest of the community colleges throughout North Carolina, serving over 70,000citizens this past year. Faced with this success coupled with a shrinking state bud-get and a number of unknowns forcing the freezing of positions, cancellation ofclasses and elimination of equipment funds, many challenges have been placed onour College and Foundation. In meeting these challenges under the superb leader-ship of the Foundation staff led by Brenda Lea, the Foundation completed fiscalyear ending June 30, 2002, successfully achieving a budget of $7,007,016 with anendowment of almost $10,000,000. The Foundation also issued over 600 scholar-ships for the year and funded $582,416 of equipment purchases, plus implementedcreative new directions like the “Adopt a Class Program” to combat the state fiscalcrisis.

Currently, initiatives are underway to address the ongoing capital needs of CPCCthat include future needs of $22,000,000 for laboratories, computers and otherequipment; $10,000,000 for scholarships, $3,700,000 to meet the ongoing Statebudget cuts, $2,000,000 to develop new programs, $2,300,000 to sustain currentprograms, and $2,000,000 for teaching fellowships. The scholarship funds arealways the highest priority. The potential of the capital campaign looks exceedinglypromising and will be initiated in the spring of 2003. In addition, our successfulCentral High School renovation and endowment campaign is well underway, con-tacting some 8,000 alumni with a reunion that was held October 5, 2002.

It is an enormously exciting time for the College, the Foundation, their leadershipand their volunteers. With the substantial success of the College in achieving itsstrategic plan and with the support of the Foundation, new boundaries, new direc-tions and new challenges will be met and accomplished to continue the hugeeducational and training opportunities the College provides to us in this out-standing region.

Belk Center for Justice: Claudia Belk is a true North Carolina icon in philanthropy and

justice. We have recognized her generosity to the CPCC community and celebrated

her investment in education by naming, in her honor, the Claudia Watkins Belk Center

for Justice on our North Campus in Huntersville. The Criminal Justice Program at

CPCC is a model program of national acclaim and includes a forensic institute.

Good Friends of CPCC: (l. to r.) Spiro Hondros,

Christa Overcash, Dale Halton, Harvey Gantt – allgood friends of CPCC. The Christa A. Overcash

Nursing Program is located on CPCC’s CentralCampus. Mrs. Overcash says, “Central PiedmontCommunity College is one of Charlotte’s most valu-able assets. I am delighted to be able to help somany students achieve their career goals. An invest-ment in CPCC buys more usable education per dollarthan any place I know.”

Pepsi Cola Bottling has made a contribution to theCPCC Foundation and in 2004, the Dale F. Halton

Theatre will open on CPCC’s Central Campus. Mrs.Halton is a wonderful supporter of CPCC and itsVisual and Performing Arts. This Program is the greatinterface between the community and the College. Itwas Joan Jeffri, Professor of Arts at ColumbiaUniversity who once stated, “Perhaps the most sig-nificant contribution the United States has made tothe world of contemporary arts is in the very publicnature of the relationship between the artist and theconsumer.”

Naming Opportunities: Here, the dedication ofthe Layne-Trane Heating and Air ConditioningLaboratory at CPCC. (l. to r.) Bob Alexy, DistrictManager of American Standard & Trane; John

Layne for whom lab is named, and Tony Zeiss. There are many naming opportunities at CPCC.

O’Herron Chair: An endowed chair established by the O’Herron Foundation honors excellence in teaching. It also assists inthe retention of selected faculty by providing recipients with annual stipends. Recipients are nominated by their peers andchosen by a committee comprised of Mr. and Mrs. O’Herron’s daughter, Patty Norman, and the College and Foundation’sleadership. Pictured above (l. to r.) are recipients Calvin Jackson, Edith Valladares, and Dr. Lynn Moretz. To the right:Margaret and Ed O’Herron.

Harper National Flexographic Center: Flexography is the fastest-growing industry in theworld, thanks to the benevolence of Charlotte business owners Ron and Katherine Harper, pictured here at the dedication of the Harper National Flexographic Center on CPCC’sSouthwest Campus located on Hebron Street.

The Harpers have also made generous estate arrangements for the Center. Owners ofHarper Corporation of America, they choose to invest in education because “the industryneeds a continuous resource of knowledgeable people…; and students want careers thatare exciting, challenging, stable and secure within a growing segment of our economy,” saysRon Harper.

planned gifts

Through the Foundation’s Planned Giving Program, donors assist CPCC students years into the future. Some have made estate considerations for the benefit of the college.

A bequest is a traditional planned gift. Other donors give life insurance or establish gift annuities.Charitable gift annuities are issued to donors who wish to exchange an asset for a life income.

Memorial gifts also provide valuable contributions to the CPCC Foundation. This year, Gene Bryant, a for-mer Chairman of the Visual & Performing Arts at CPCC, passed away. A special fund was established tohonor him. Gifts such as this allow people to honor family members or friends and, at the same time, helpCPCC provide a variety of educational opportunities.

The Cato Family has thirty endowed scholarships at CPCC. They have all beengiven in memory or in honor of friends and loved ones. Because the principleremains inviolate and only the earnings are awarded, these scholarships will remainin perpetuity to help CPCC students.

“I love creating endowed scholarship funds at Central Piedmont CommunityCollege because it feels so good to help motivated individuals get an affordable, quality education!” says Clarice Cato Goodyear.
