Safety Put to the Test.
All chain and every single component isproof-loaded to a level that corresponds to 62% ofthe minimum breaking load. Individual inspectionbefore delivery from our factories ensures high andconsistent quality.
Chain and components are tested todestruction on a random sample basis from everyproduction batch. Minimum breaking force =Maximum working load limit x Design Factor.Full test data is documented. The prescribedelongation for Gunnebo Grade 80 Alloy chain isminimum 20%.
Additionally, finished products are subjected totesting to ensure the correct hardness levels. Cyclicalloading tests are also carried out to simulate the fatigueeffects that would be expected over many years of use.
Chain and components carry identification marksfor full traceability back to the steel supplier for rawmaterial analysis.

1. Single Leg Sling:If the required measurement falls in the middle of a link, the next link is cut.
2. Double Leg Sling (when assembling a clevis system sling)Cut chain to length and count the links. You must have an even number of links so hooks hang in the correct plane. (Hooks should always point out, as shown in diagram.)
3. Triple or Quadruple Leg Sling (when assembling a clevis system sling)Cut chain to length and count the links. You must have an odd number of links so hooks hang in the correct plane. (Hooks should always point out, as shown in diagram.) If the measurement falls in the middle of a link, the next link is cut.
4. A metal I.D. Tag must always be attached to a chain sling, showing serial number, size, reach, rated capacity at angle of lift and manufacturer.
5. The reach of the sling is the length measured from the load bearing surface of the master link to the load bearing surface of the hook or lower terminal ( as shown in illustration).
6. Each sling manufactured shall have a completed certificate of test provided to user.
Tips for Chain Sling Assembly
WARNINGSEE WARNINGS AND USE LIMITATIONS ON PAGES 24-31
• Never use a sling without training…OSHA regulationrequires responsible work practice.
“The employer shall permit only those employees qualified bytraining or experience to operate equipment or machinery” –OSHA 1926.20 (a)(4).
Employee training should include information given in OSHAtraining literature, ASME B30.9 – 1996 “Slings” and ASME B30.10a– 1996 “Hooks” Safety Standards, and this document.
• Always inform yourself… Ask your employer for chain slingsafe use instruction.
“The employer shall instruct each employee in the recognitionand avoidance of unsafe conditions, and the regulationsapplicable to his work environment to control or eliminate anyhazards or other exposure to injury” – OSHA 1926.21 (b)(2).
Always comply with applicable Federal and local regulations…Federal and local regulations govern work site activity.
Understand all governing laws and safety standards before useof chain slings. OSHA 1910.184 regulates chain sling safeoperating practices, product identif icat ion, inspectionrequirements, and use limitations. ASME B30.9-1996 “Sling”Safety Standard provides additional recommendations for chainsling use.
“If a particular standard is specifically applicable to a condition, practice, means, method, operation, or process, it shall prevailover any different general standard…” – OSHA 1910.5(c)(1).
Call OSHA at (202) 523-3517 and ASME at (212) 705-7722 forreference assistance.
• Always know load weight…Avoid sling failure.
“The weight of the load shall be within the rated load of thesling.” – ASME B30.9-1.9(b).
Weight of the load to be lifted must be known for determinationof proper sling configuration and working load limit.
• Never use a sling without a legible identification tag…Sling Identification is required to ensure proper sling application.
“Alloy steel chain slings shall have permanently affixed durableidentification stating size, grade, rated capacity, and reach.” -OSHA 1910.184 (e) (1)
“Hooks, rings…or other attachments shall have a rated capacityequal to the alloy steel chain with which they are used or thesling shall not be used in excess of the rated capacity of theweakest component…” – OSHA 1910.184(e)(2)(1)

Gunnebo-Johnson provides a blank identification tag, attached by a coupler, to be stamped with sling WLL,minimum working range angle, serial number, chainsize, grade, reach, type and manufacturer. Order547303 for replacement.
Grade of component with the lowest breakingstrength shall be specified on the identification tag.Nonstandard grades shall be designated by “NS.”
Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum workingload for a specified working range. Sling workingrange includes sling leg angles from 90° to a specifiedminimum. The specified minimum working rangeangle is given on the identification tag.
Working load is to be applied vertically to a slingassembly having symmetric leg angles. WLL applies toloads lifted vertically and does not include torsional, binding, shock or non-symmetrical load effects.
Gunnebo Grade 80 Alloy Steel Chain Sling WorkingLoad Limits for selected working ranges of symmetricsling leg angles are listed in pounds and given inTABLE 1. No chain sling shall be rigged with a legangle less than 30° from the horizontal.
Double Leg Sling WLL for an alternate working rangeof symmetric sling leg angles equals (=) 2 * TABLE 1single leg WLL * sine of the minimum working rangeangle.
Triple and Quadruple Leg Sling WLL for an alternateworking range of symmetric sling leg angles equals(=) 3 * TABLE 1 single leg WLL * sine of the minimumworking range angle.
TABLE 2 lists for convenience sine values for selectedsling leg angles.
TABLE 2
Multi-Leg Sling WLL for non-symmetrical loading canonly be determined by engineering analysis of thespecific rigging condition. In the absence of an engi-neering analysis, WLL shall be equal to single leg slingWLL given in TABLE 1.
Choked endless chain sling WLL equals 80% ofTABLE 1 double leg sling WLL for corresponding legangle.
Choked chain sling WLL is affected by choke angle.TABLE 3 illustrates choke angle and gives choked WLLsas a percentage of TABLE 1 WLL for full range of chokeangles.

• Never overload a sling…Understand WorkingLoad Limits.
“Slings shall not be loaded in excess of their ratedcapacities.” – OSHA 1910.184 (c)(4).
“Rated loads for alloy steel chain slings shall be basedon a minimum design factor of 4.” – ASME B30.9-1.2
Standard Gunnebo Working Load Limits (WLL) arebased on a 4 design factor. Lift dynamics, duty cycleand hitch type may require an increased design factor, hence a reduced WLL. Inattention to required designfactor can result in sling overload. Contact Gunnebo-Johnson Service Department for assistance at (800)331-5460.
Sling WLL depends on sling leg angle. The WLL for asling is reduced as the sling leg angle with thehorizontal gets smaller. This fact applies to all multi-legslings and must not be ignored.
The following diagram illustrates the effect of sling legangle on the WLL for a 2-leg sling.
The WLL of a sling with a 30° leg angle is 50% of theWLL for the same sling with a 90° leg angle.Inattention to the effect of sling leg angle can result insling overload.
• Never ride on sling or load…Avoid death or injury.
Sling use regulation requires: “All employees shall bekept clear of loads about to be lifted and ofsuspended loads.” - OSHA 1910.184 (c) (9).
General work site regulations require “No hoisting, lowering, swinging or traveling shall be done whileanyone is on the load or hook assembly.” - OSHA1910.180 (h) (3) (v).
Construction work site regulation stipulates: “The useof a crane or derrick to hoist employees on apersonnel platform is prohibited. Except, when theerection, use, and dismantling of conventional meansof reaching the work site, such as a personnel hoist, ladder, stairway, aerial lift, elevating work platform or
scaffold, would be more hazardous or is not pos-sible because of structural design or work site condi-tions.” - OSHA 1926.550 (g) (2).
Alloy steel chain slings shall not be used to rig per-sonnel platforms.
• Never rig a sling to a load improperly…Avoiddropped loads and sling damage.
“Safe operating practices…” – OSHA 1910.184 (c)“Operating practices…” – ASME B30.9 1.9.

• Slings used in a basket hitch shall have the loadsbalanced to prevent slipping.
• Slings shall be securely attached to their loads.
• Slings shall be padded or protected from the sharpedges of their loads.
• Never use a worn-out or damaged sling.
“Each day before being used, the sling and all fas-tenings and attachments shall be inspected for dam-age or defects by a competent person desig-nated by the employer. Additional inspections shall beperformed during sling use where service conditionswarrant. Damaged or defective slings shall be immedi-ately removed from service” - OSHA 1910.184 (d).
“In addition to the inspection required by paragraph1910.184(d), a thorough periodic inspection shall bemade on a regular basis, to be determined on the basisof (A) frequency of sling use; (B) severity of serviceconditions; (C) nature of lifts being made; and (D)experience gained on the service life of slings used insimilar circumstances. Such inspections shall in no eventbe at intervals greater than once every 12 months.” -OSHA 1910.184(e)(3)(i).
“The thorough inspection of alloy steel chain slingsshall be performed by a competent person designatedby the employer, and shall include a thorough inspec-tion for wear, defective welds, deformation andincrease in length. Where such defects or deteriorationare present, the sling shall be immediately removedfrom service.” – OSHA 1910.184(e)(3)(iii).
27
“Worn or damaged al loy steel chain sl ings orattachments shall not be used until repaired.” – OSHA1910.184(e)(7)(i).
Chain sl ing with reach longer than given onidentification tag shall be immediately removed fromservice and evaluated for wear and material stretch.
Chain link wear is limited by minimum cross sectionaldimensions given in TABLE 4. Chain worn below thegiven limits shall be removed from service.
TABLE 4
Chain Sling connector or attachment with weargreater than 10 percent of the original dimension forany cross section shall be removed from service.
