A Sense of Community

By The Reverend Nathanael Saint-Pierre

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14) I am not sure how many times I have said it, but it is essential to repeat that church is not a building or construction; church is not a work of architecture or monument; church is the gathering of the people of God with the purpose to worship him, praise him and proclaim him. It is when two or three are gathered in his name, that God is in our midst. Church is the gathering of God’s people. When we drive by Church Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, we may have the impression that so many churches cannot all be all the gathering of God’s people. There are so many church signs, names and de-scriptions, side by side, we may be led to believe we are at a marketplace where God, in different flavors, is put up for sale. We can go inside them, like when we go shopping, to discover different universes, differ-ent products, one more colorful than the previous, one more organized or free than the other. In one, peo-ple are clapping hands; they are in trances and possessed by some form of spirit. In another, people are like tombs in a cemetery, ice cold, lifeless. Not surprisingly, a First French Baptist Church still stands be-

side a Church of God, both of them led by Rev. Dr. and Bishop founders. Sometimes we are wondering, considering the number of people seating inside, why not have only one building and join forces if we’re all under one God? The fact is that humankind is not created to live in isolation. We have a sense of community. We need to be in community, a com-munity made by individualities that differ in many ways. Uniformity did not exist at the beginning of creation, and will not exist now. But living in community is a challenge that the church of our time has not invented. The reading from the Book of Nehemiah is talking about the rebuilding of the community of Israel. People, scattered everywhere in exile, were back in Jerusalem, reunited as a new community in a temple just reconstructed. But gathering and reunification created problems. Men were married to women who were not Israelites (read people of different faiths) that came with them. These women were outsiders perceived as such. They had children who were mixed, half pagan, half Israelite. The tolerance, so essential for community life, was threatened. Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, compares the gathering of God’s people as one body and several members. Each one with a set of gifts and a role to play. The Gospel also presented us also a Jesus, while expected by all, is not accepted in his own community. When he showed up at home, at the synagogue in Nazareth, read the scriptures, and went on to tell the audience that "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.", it was not to make more fans. People, his own people, were not ready to accept a young man they knew, personally and in his roots, as the Messiah they were expecting. Without any doubt, trouble started, and with trouble, came rejection, plots and treason. Church nowadays is not different. We are also individuals gathered for a purpose but often losing focus on what God’s purpose is. Often, we make the purpose of the church a personal purpose. It is as though we own the church. We want everyone to under-stand, define and practice God the way we do. We want to control God’s ways. Unfortunately discernment is a gift that does not come in the same wrapping for all. What The Episcopal Church (TEC) has come to believe is not shared by the whole Anglican Communion. The reverse is also true. The speed in which we get to understand the inclusivity of God’s love is just unimaginable to others. The obsession to seek for uniformity in the diversity of our cultures, beliefs, superstitions and blind spots is craziness. We had better look at what is deeply essential to for our gathering and make it our priority. We are church when: The Holy Spirit is upon us because he has anointed us to bring good news to the poor. He has sent us to proclaim release to the captives and re-covery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Outside of our individualities, we need to find the vehicle in which working together for the Common Good is always possible. We are not to believe because of our power, our position, our privilege, our money, we can force our ways, and force others to ac-cept our values and choices. It would be colonialism. We are not to believe that the wideness of our vision or its narrowness, is the unique way to look at God. What we consider granted in the USA: gay rights, electricity, access to water, social security, etc. is still just a dream for so many. Love is the patience that we show to one another when differences exist but we don’t walk away from one another. Love is the decision NOT to walk away but to keep trying in the togetherness of our lives. It is more difficult to love separated, or segregated. Love is fully lived in the mistakes and forgiveness(ES) of our relationships. “Now WE (you) are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts.”

Let us all strive for the greater gifts in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians:

Just as t he body is one and has m any m em bers, and all t he m em bers

Indeed, t he body does not consist o f one m em ber but o f m any. If t he

But as it is, God arranged t he m em bers in t he body, each one of t hem ,
