Going to London had been my dream since I was eight,therefore it seems almost impossible to describe fully myhappiness when I finally got off the plane at Heathrow airport.I must say I wasn’t expecting such a warm welcome from myhost family, but the Goldbergers were so kind and open thatI felt at home immediately.

I was thrilled when I met my housemates, Roger, from Taiwan,Laszlo, from Hungary and Seong, from South Korea. Despitethe fact that they were older than me, we got on well witheach other at once, and ended up hanging out together atweekends, looking for places to have lunch, chatting for hoursafter dinner, or just having a laugh. Studying at InternationalHouse was also an unforgettable experience. It was mostfascinating to be in the same classroom with people fromItaly, Kazakhstan, Algeria, Argentina, Iran and Saudi Arabia,listening to different accents and learning about other cultures.

London is probably one of the best places to do sightseeing.After classes I would wander around the streets, stoppingevery once in a while to take pictures, going to museums, artgalleries, shops, parks and markets. I loved the cold weather,the buildings and even travell ing on the Tube!

I also won’t forget crossing the famous Abbey Road, goingto Camden Town, where I got lost inside the coolest marketI’ve ever seen while looking for memorabilia of my favouriteBritish band, Oasis, and going to places outside London, suchas Windsor, Eton, Bath, Stonehenge, Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford.

Finally, I would to thank the BRITÁNICO for this incredibleopportunity that helped me to improve my English and forthe best summer holidays I’ve ever had.

From the moment I arrived in London, I realised that living there was very different thanliving in Lima. The streets, the public transport, everything was so clean and well-organized!!. It’s a city that will make you feel at home, even thought you’re thousandsof miles away from it. And although it was freezing most of the time, it never stoppedme from visiting every place I could.

In International House, I could meet and make friends with people from all around the world: Korea, Belarus, Chile, Iran, Italy,Russia, etc. it was interesting to learn about their cultures and their countries, but the most important thing was to talk to themabout Peru!!

Besides, living with an English family and other foreign students was very exciting. They always helped me from day one and theywere very nice to me because they knew it was the first time I had been away from home for this long.

Finally, I want to thank the BRITÁNICO for giving me this opportunity. Concurso de Fotografía 2008Capta las mejores imágenes y participa en el VI Concurso Foto Británico 2008“Ellas y Ellos”. Sólo necesitas estar matriculado en el curso de adultos delBRITÁNICO al momento de la inscripción.

“Ellas y Ellos” busca estimular a los participantes para que capten imágenesen donde se puedan observar los roles de cada género o su antítesis,reflejándolos de manera particular.

La entrega de trabajos será desde el lunes 19 hasta el sábado 24 demayo.

No olvides que en tu CD-ROM puedes encontrar ejerciciosde gramática, vocabulario y pronunciación, así como videos con los cuales puedes practicar tu “listening” con el apoyo visual.

Cambridge ESOL 2008-IAdministrationOn Saturday 8th March, more than two hundred and fiftycandidates from different BRITÁNICO centres sat the FirstCertificate in English at BRITÁNICO Lima.

The FCE exam tested if our students’ knowledge of thelanguage is adequate for many practical everyday purposes,including business and study.

On passing the exam, our BRITÁNICO candidates will receivein a special ceremony a certificate awarded by University ofCambridge ESOL Examinations, which is recognized throughoutthe world.

2nd “Cambridge ESOLWeek” for 2008The second “University of Cambridge ESOL Week” of thecurrent year for registration purposes has been held in March.Exams are to be sat in May and June this year.

All registered candidates will receive their timetables from14th -18th April at the same Teaching Centres where theycompleted their form. We do recommend you visit the Universityof Cambridge site which has been recently changedwww.CambridgeESOL.org.

En el mes que termina desarrollamos un programa refrescantey divertido con la masiva participación de nuestros alumnosJuniors y Kids de los distintos centros. Al finalizar las vacacionesescolares, aprovechamos la oportunidad para despedirla consesiones plenas de creatividad.

Es así que en el mes de febrero ofrecimos motivadorasactividades manuales en los centros de Miraflores, Los Jardinesy San Miguel, donde se dictaron sesiones de Mini Chef yJunior Chef, respectivamente; actividad que día a día ganaespacio y que los menores disfrutaron mucho por la sencillezde las recetas y su degustación. También ofrecimos clases debisutería en San Borja y Monterrico para los Juniors, quieneselaboraron simpáticos llaveros, juegos de pulsera y aretes,además de chaquiras. Es interesante apreciar cómo losparticipantes crean sus propios diseños en color y formas apartir de la muestra y accesorios que se le entregan. En Limapintamos una útil y simpática caja, actividad en la que nuestrosalumnos pudieron explayarse y aplicar su sello personal. Crearfiguras con globos es una actividad que genera la expectativay alegría de los asistentes; esta vez estuvimos en Surco dondenuestros estudiantes se entretuvieron y recrearon armandosus coloridos muñecos.

Nos complace la acogida que tuvo nuestro programa VeranoFull esta temporada y, de alguna forma, el haber contribuidocon difundir las artes manuales. Invitamos cordialmente anuestros alumnos a participar en el programa Tiempo Libre,que se activa a partir de marzo y ofrece siempre atractivasnovedades.

One-way Ticket to PeruSerita Pickersgill

I’ve been in Peru for over a year, which to most people is a long time to be away from home,unless you’re from Snodland.

My hometown, or rather village, is about 50 km south-east of London, in the Kent countryside. It’s a place where everyone knows everyone else, the buses stop at 6 pm, and the localvicar has recently eloped with his assistant. If you’re from Snodland you have two choices,you can leave as soon as you’re 18, or stay and marry a local lad, in which case you’reguaranteed a life of tedious monotony and ugly children. I chose the former, and have spentmost of my adult life in London or abroad.One of the reasons I came to Peru was that I had lived in Ecuador and wanted to return to South America. Theother was that while working in China I met two Peruvians, Monica and Carolina, who were kind, warm and friendly,and so I was left with a good impression of Peru.

My first few days in Peru were perfect, but after two months I was considering returning home. Obviously I didn’t,but only because of three people at BRITÁNICO who showed me the kindness and friendliness that I had experiencedin China.

I’m glad I didn’t go home as living in Lima has been a wonderful experience. I’ve visited Arequipa and the stunningColca Valley, and of course Cusco, and Machu Picchu. Not forgetting the fantastic nightlife in Lima!

And so, the question now is, do I stay in the UK, or do I come back to Peru?

My experience in PeruSian Lightfoot

My name is Siân and I’m one of the new British teachers working in San Isidro. I’d like totell you a few things about myself. My main passion in life is travel and adventure and Ienjoy experiencing different cultures which is why I’ve come to Peru. My hobbies includephotography, reading and music; I love going to music festivals. I also love scuba divingand have been on diving trips in the UK, Australia and Fiji.I come from Bishops Cleeve which is next to Cheltenham in the West of England. Cheltenhamis a spa town and visitors used to come from all over the country to drink the waters. Theywere said to cure illnesses and have magical powers. Nowadays we don’t believe this is true

but we still have a special place, Pittville Pump Room, where people can sample the spa water. Throughoutthe year we have some festivals of literature, science and art where you can go to talks and performances.Music fans can visit the grave of founding member of the Rolling Stones, Brian Jones, who was born inCheltenham.

Bishops Cleeve is a typical village in the Cotswolds. It has grown from a small farming community and thesocial life is still focused on the village pub where you can sample some of the local ales whilst catching upwith the latest gossip. Bishops Cleeve is surrounded by some beautiful countryside which we affectionatelycall The Shire after the Lord of the Rings.

From the United Kingdom to PeruGreetings from Charley RaineyI am 25 years old and have travelled all the way from Gloucestershire, England to come andteach at BRITÁNICO Miraflores. I arrived in this country just before Christmas and so far havehad some fantastic experiences!

This is my first time in America and so it has been interesting for me to note the similaritiesand differences between our countries. I enjoyed learning about the traditions and superstitionssurrounding New Year’s Eve, for example eating grapes at midnight and wearing yellow pants(underwear) for luck! I think that I will take this tradition home with me to England! Normallyat midnight we don’t have these traditions, we normally focus on our resolutions. These arepromises that we make to ourselves about how we want to live better lives in the New Year. My New Year’sResolution was and is to learn more Spanish!

The main difference that I have noticed between Lima and Britain is the traffic! I have decided to make it achallenge of mine to try and talk to as many people as possible about the changing attitudes towards theenvironment in Britain nowadays. I love meeting with new people and having a good debate!

I have found that the people I have met so far have been incredibly friendly and enthusiastic about their culture,particularly when it comes to Peruvian food! I am a vegetarian and so have been exploring the veggie options.Luckily you have some fabulous restaurants here in Miraflores.

My time so far has been really important to me and I am looking forward to meeting more people andcontinuing to learn more about the Peruvian way of life.

Concurso de boardsDalila CanarioSubjefa del Centro de San Isidro

Aprovechando la celebración del día del amor y la amistad,en el mes de febrero, se realizó un concurso de boards, en elque participaron nuestros alumnos de Juniors, Básico eIntermedio. El jurado estuvo a cargo del equipo de Marketing,el cual tuvo una difícil tarea ya que todos los participantesdesplegaron mucha creatividad y entusiasmo en cada trabajorealizado.

Finalmente, se eligieron a los ganadores: Juniors 6 de las 2:30p.m., de la profesora Sara Chavieri, Básico 3 de las 10:30 a.m.de la profesora Silvana Montesinos e Intermedio 4 de las 4:10p.m. de la profesora Rosina Dávila. Un agradecimiento especiala la profesora Úrsula Vásquez, quien tuvo la iniciativa yentusiasmo para llevar a cabo este concurso.

En el mes de febrero se llevó a cabo una entretenida actividad titulada“Teens party” con el grupo de Juniors 2 de las 08:40, a cargo delprofesor Juan Allauca.

En dicho evento los alumnos presentaron sus propias canciones,utilizando el lenguaje adquirido durante el ciclo, mostrándose muymotivados y alegres al poder usar el idioma inglés de una maneradivertida y espontánea.

Peru has been an adventure so far. I’ve visited some great places in Lima. Last weekend I visited Huaca Pucllana which was spectacular.It was interesting to learn about Pre-Inca culture and it’s amazing to think that it has stayed standing despite all the earthquakes!I’ve been to a few museums to learn about Peruvian history and there are plenty more to visit. I love going to the beach too. It’sbeen hard struggling with the language but I’m having classes now so I’m a student too! I’ve got over the culture shock and I’mstarting to enjoy the way of life here…

Karaoke San Valentín en SurcoKaren AliagaSubjefa del Centro de Surco

Dulces melodías, sentimentales canciones, enamoradastonadas… Todo esto se vivió en Surco el 14 de febrero, enun gran karaoke en el que los asistentes pudieron interpretarlos grandes clásicos de The Beatles, Aerosmith, Bee Gees,entre otros. De esta manera, todos sentimos que practicarel inglés puede ser más romántico de lo que imaginamos.
