Presentation of Certificates ofExcellence to the Student Artists WhoMake Up the 300 Piece Exhibition

PRESENTATION OF THE 25 GOVERNOR’S AWARDS OF EXCELLENCEThe 2009 Top 25 Awards have been made possible through the generous support of the KnowledgeWorks Foundation.

The Artist: Steven W. Bush is an accomplished metal sculptor, painter, and master fabricator. His works of art range from oilon canvas to large-scale sculptural installations for individuals, corporations, and collectors nationwide. Bush teaches at theColumbus College of Art and Design, in Columbus, Ohio, is a member of the New Albany Arts Council Board of Directors, and is the principal owner of smARTworks studio in Blacklick, Ohio, where he creates custom and commissioned artworksthat may be found in collections in 27 states and five countries. Steve can be contacted at: www.stevenwbush.com or bycalling 614-578-0322.

The Awards: The process of addition in fabrication is Steven Bush’s forte. First he draws many designs and lets the clientpick the design that speaks the loudest. Then the client and artist detail the design to the color and size desired. “ After fifteenyears I’ve learned that if the client helps on the decision making as to the look of the sculpture they are much happier withthe results when taken from a two dimensional drawing to a three dimensional sculpture. This award represents workingtogether as a sculpture of parts to a whole, and working with others to make a dream come true.

THE OHIO GOVERNOR’S YOUTH ART EXHIBITION

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, now in its thirty-ninth year, is dedicated to the educational andartistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The Exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s1,052 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. Ourpurpose is to provide all budding young artists of the state with opportunities to advance their talent, whetherthat be through scholarships or simply experiencing the process of entering their work in a competition. TheExhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughoutOhio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist in our state.

The process of selecting art works for the State Exhibition begins on a regional level. The state is divided into15 regional locations, with high school students in each region invited to enter work in that regional judging. Each region has a designated Regional Director, who is responsible for choosing the judges for his or herregion and arranging specifics of the event.

This state judging takes place in Columbus; however, the judges for this level of competition are chosen fromall over the country and are generally professional artists themselves, college level instructors, or both.

From the 13,500 regional entries from the 15 regions, approximately 3,000 are selected to enter the statejudging. State jurors then select 300 for the actual Exhibition, with 25 of the 300 chosen to receive theGovernor’s Award of Excellence. Scholarships are offered to seniors by more than 30 universities and col-leges of art. The selection of students to be offered scholarships is left strictly up to those institutions whooffer them. The Governor’s Exhibition is merely a vehicle through which schools and students are broughttogether.

The Exhibition opens at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, across from the state capitol, in April andcloses near the end of May. An awards ceremony is held at the Riffe Center Capitol Theatre in the students’honor prior to the opening. The attendance at the awards ceremony is over 700 and the Exhibition attendanceis at least 1,200. At the Exhibition awards ceremony, students receive Awards of Excellence and scholarshipawards.
