Professor Vincent McGrath, Head, School of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Tasmania, visited Mackay in March 2009 to meet with interested artists wishing to explore pathways for entry into the MCA degree. Study in the Master of Contemporary Arts (MCA) is undertaken externally [by distance] through the highly prestigious Academy of the Arts at the Launceston campus. This challenging and creative program provides professional studio/workplace-oriented experiences that will extend your understanding and appreciation of arts-related concepts, propositions and contemporary professional practices, assisting in new opportunities for work in the creative industries. Entry into the Master of Contemporary Arts postgraduate study is offered twice a year, with study starting in February and July. Saturday 28 March 2009 from 3.30pm in State Library of Queensland, Auditorium 1. An international authority on creativity and the use of culture in city revitalisation, Landry looks at creative ways to engage citizens with the place they live through design and planning. He helps city planners and communities transform their thinking so they look at their potential imaginatively and plan and act with originality. He then attempts to ground these concepts in practical initiatives such as cultural planning and heritage, strategic policy development and the creative industries. Landry controversially challenged the theory of multiculturalism, he asks whether diversity leads to well-being and innovation in cities and how people of different cultures can successfully live together. CQUniversity Australia is proposing a $67-million two-year building project to establish Australia’s most integrated and advanced tertiary education facility focused on the resources sector and its future workforce needs. The Resources Innovation Australia Precinct, a world-first, would be featured at CQUniversity Knowledge Village Mackay, the community-focused site which will strategically co-locate vocational education providers, government, and industry at the University’s campus. The project would create 330 new construction jobs over the next two years and eventually attract up to 1200 new students to multiple learning providers located across the campus. “This is the right time to invest in education infrastructure. The government at all levels wants it, industry wants it and the community want it,” said CQUniversity Deputy Vice Chancellor Jennelle Kyd. The Resources Innovation Australia Precinct, featuring 7500 square metre multi-use building, will provide shared access to a range of specialised facilities, equipment and people, such as simulation technologies, laboratories (engineering, science and light industrial) and an eLearning Hub. The Precinct will create a knowledge-rich environment for Australia’s future workforce within the resources sector to leverage experience, conduct research, network, learn and innovate. “By 2020 CQUniversity intends to be Australia’s most accessible university – accessible to industry, government and students, especially students who are underrepresented in the education system. An inclusive project like this which puts collaboration and the exchange of knowledge at the centre of those relationships is essential for future jobs, innovation, technological advancements, research and the sustainability of our community,” Professor Kyd added. As part of the Village, the Precinct will also feature the Mackay Trade Training Centre and provide facilities to accommodate a number of additional integrated education and training providers, industry and other organisations. Recently CQUniversity commenced preliminary work on the construction of its Technology and Information Resource

Centre at the Knowledge Village, a $23 million project which gets underway next year. “With the right investment from government we can ensure that Mackay, Central Queensland and our resources sector remain competitive and resilient to economic slowdowns and boom times,” Professor Kyd said. CQUniversity has applied to the Federal Government’s Education Investment Fund for $50million to complete the Precinct building project as early as 2011. Other funds would come from the University and co-investors. Did you know about Red Alert…? RED ALERT! "Red Alert" is a collection of digital stories made by young people from across Queensland about cyclones, bushfires, severe storms and floods. These digital stories are a collage of young people's voices, art work and storytelling about their experiences. 100 young people have contributed to these digital stories by sharing their personal stories, creating artwork, being interviewed, filming, taking photos and developing the themes, stories and digital collages. There are five stories in each category developed by young people that have directly experienced cyclone, Bushfire, severe storm and flood. These stories share experiences before, during and after each disaster event as well as the sights and sounds for each. Also included is the "Behind the Scenes" story that documents processes used to engage young people in the project, objectives and outcomes of the project. There are lots of ways that you can make use of these stories. Here are some suggestions: Learning about what to do in the event of a disaster in your home town; Informing others on what can happen when a cyclone, bushfire or severe storm or flood occurs in your region; Helping young people to teach other young people through their own experiences and stories; Debriefing young people about their own experiences of disasters; Inspiring young people to use a creative process to develop a digital outcome; Listening and hearing young people's ideas and stories whilst watching them come to life; and Discussing with young people issues around living in Australia and experiencing climate change. The State Government wants to tap into the potential of our designers to increase the competitiveness of business and the public sector and improve Queenslanders' quality of life. The Queensland Design Strategy 2020 [PDF 2MB] launched by Arts Minister Rod Welford on 19 February 2009, is a whole-of-government framework dedicated to promoting the value of design and inspiring its take up by Queensland businesses, the community, and the public sector. Through a series of four-year plans, the Strategy will support and guide the growth of the design sector nationally and internationally through a series of classroom, boardroom and community initiatives, high-profile events, international exchanges and the mainstreaming of good design into government departments. A Queensland Design Council will be appointed from leaders of the design, business and research sectors to guide the implementation of the Strategy. Media Release… Significant Indigenous ancestral sites revealed in a new art publication. MEDIA RELEASE COURTESY OF: Northern Territory Government Taken from: ArtsHub | Tuesday, March 17, 2009

A new publication featuring images of more than 80 Indigenous artworks including bark paintings, figure carvings, hollow logs, fibre items and prints from Yalangbara (Port Bradshaw), northeast Arnhem Land has been launched. Museum and Art Gallery Northern Territory (MAGNT) Emeritus Curator of Aboriginal Art and anthropologist Margie West said Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu is the result of a three year collaboration between MAGNT and the well known Marika family. “The Marika family and members of the Rirratjingu clan wanted to document their ancestral stories and profile their family’s rich artistic legacy,” Ms West said. “Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu is the first Indigenous art publication to focus on one significant ancestral site. “For more than three generations the Marika family have been creating artworks about their homeland in various mediums, and many of the works featured in the publication have been drawn from MAGNT as well as other collections around Australia and overseas. “Some of the pieces include barks made in the 1930s, rare crayon drawings collected in the 1950s by anthropologist Ronald Berndt, as well as contemporary works that show the changes that have occurred in Rirratjingu art over the

generations.” In addition to artworks the publication also features essays by leading academics and members of the Marika family. Family member and Indigenous artist Banduk Marika said she considered the publication of her family’s artwork and related stories as the next step following the listing of Yalangbara on the Commonwealth Government’s Register of the National Estate in 2003. “This publication is like entering into our parliament – the Rirratjingu parliament – we are giving the public access to information that has been forbidden for thousands of years because its time to show everyone that Yalangbara is important,” Ms Marika said. Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu will be officially launched by His Honour Mr Tom Pauling AO QC, Administrator of the Northern Territory. Copies of the publication can be purchased from the MAGNT Shop or Charles Darwin University Bookshop. Following on from the book launch of Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu will be a free public seminar chaired by Margie West and featuring speakers from the Marika family as well as anthropologists and writers to explore some of the themes in the publication at MAGNT theatrette from 10am-1pm Friday, 13 March 2009. Museum and Art Gallery Northern Territory is also currently developing an exhibition of the Rirratjingu clan in partnership with the National Museum of Australia scheduled for late 2010.
