Trolley derby keeps on rollin’Jack Kettley races down Collingwood St on his trolley Kathleen. The Robertson’s Trolley Derby had a record number of entrants and was viewed by 2500 people. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Without the cameras rolling the job was left to the trolleys, with a record number of entrants taking part in the 2012 Robertson’s Trolley Derby. All of the fields had record attend-ance figures, which Nelson Trolley Club president Tim Bayley puts down
to plenty of exposure from the movie Kiwi Flyer, which was filmed at last year’s event. The film will premiere in Nelson in May and is based on the Nelson trol-ley derby.Last year’s event was held in wet condi-
tions, however organisers couldn’t have been more pleased with the weather this year as the sun shone on Nelson.Gilbert Robertson from naming rights sponsor Robertson’s Chartered

Council flats get new look$1.17M spent on 39 Stoke flatsThirty nine Nelson City Council-owned flats in Stoke have been upgrad-ed with new kitchens, insulation and windows. The $1.17 million up-grade was done with Housing New Zealand money – as long as the council maintains own-ership of them. Residents of the flats were treated to a thank you afternoon tea last Friday after months of disruption during the building process.
The flats have been re-newed with larger dou-ble glazed windows, insulation and modern, open plan kitchens. Many of them have also been extended to allow for a bedroom where they were previously bedsits.Mayor Aldo Miccio says the project would not have been possible without the generous support of HNZ’s Hous-ing Innovation Fund. He also thanked tenants for
moving out while the work was com-pleted, and gener-ally “making do” during construc-tion. “This was im-mensely appreci-ated and we hope you are enjoying your cosy new homes,” he said.Nelmac carried out the construc-tion, and Cameron Gibson and Wells acting as project managers.

Accountants says it was the best trolley derby he had been to. “What was particularly great was the number of families I spoke with who had come for the first time ever. Their kids got to have a run in a trolley down half of Ma-nuka St in the Classic Hits Have a Go area, and their faces were beaming. “We hope these are the next generation of trolley derby kids, so that this continues to be an iconic Nelson family event,” he says.An estimated crowd of 2500 people watched as Tim Bayley and Steve Lovell screeched down Collingwood St clocking 69 kph to tie the Monarch of the Hill race.Lincoln MacKenzie was third, reaching 66 kph.Officially, 72 trolleys were entered in the main heats. Another 50 were involved in the nippers and Monarch of the Hill race which rounded out the day.

Police on bikes ‘good’ for cyclistsNelson cyclists are hailing police for getting on their bikes to better understand the dangers faced by those travelling on two wheels.Nelson police first started patrolling on bicycles several years ago but hadn’t been active on them until recently. Bicycle Nelson Bays member John-Paul Pochin says he is thrilled to see offic-ers back on their bikes.“I think it’s fantastic on several levels. It gives police a view of the world from a cyclist’s per-spective, cyclists get the feeling of support from police, drivers see a respected person of author-ity on a bike and of course there are the health benefits for police.”Sergant John Maxwell, of Nelson, says the pa-trolling on bikes can set a great example for oth-er cyclists.“A lot of police officers are cyclists so it isn’t any-
thing new for us. We are aware of the problems cyclists face but for us this is a great way of pa-trolling and keeping our roads safe.”John-Paul says there has been plenty of talk re-cently about the rights of cyclists and whether they should be allowed to use, in particular, Rocks Rd while it has slip damage on it. “There are more and more people out on their bikes, which is great, but it also means we all need to make sure we share the roads in a posi-tive way and having police out there and under-standing that and the issues that cyclists may have is very important.”John agress and says the sooner all road users, including cyclists, show a bit more courtesy the better. He says officers will spend about 30-40 minutes on the bikes and hopes it will be a long-term addition for patrolling officers.
Nelson police officers patrolling central Nelson on their bikes last week were Constables Shane Ohlson and Carol Heiford.

Tomato man has 1000 different varieties
Keith Egerton has over 1000 different tomato seed varieties. From yellow to black, striped and rainbows, there’s a tomato to suit everyone he thinks. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
Keith Egerton considers a tomato like a nice bottle of wine, each with its own distinct flavours, colour and character-istics – and with more than 1000 dif-ferent seed varieties Keith is definitely a connoisseur. The Nelson local brought up his ton with the aptly named Super Sweet 1000 which he imported from the US earlier this year. His varieties are obvi-ously plentiful but the sheer difference between some makes you reconsider what a tomato is. Chocolate Cherokee is a rogue heir-loom with a chocolate mahogany col-our while the Big Rainbow variety has greens on the shoulder, yellow, orange and gold in the middle finished by the traditional red on the blossom end. The Black Bear, Big Zebra and Pineapple tomatoes almost speak for themselves, although Keith reckons it’s what’s in the eating that counts.“My favourites are the Brandywine Black and Brown Cherry, but toma-toes have multiple flavours, acidity and sweetness. It’s like everything, what
suits me might not suit you,” says KeithAlthough he doesn’t call himself an ex-pert, the 70 year-old has had features on tomato growing in various garden-ing magazines. “I just consider that I know a bit about it and I’m able to hand my knowledge on to people. But I’ll talk for hours about it if you let me,” he saysKeith lives in the Wood and recalls the area as one of the tomato growing epi-centres of New Zealand in the 80s and 90s with Grove St, Weka St and other areas covered in glasshouses. He says there is a bountiful amount of knowl-edge still in the area despite most of the glasshouses making way for subdivi-sions and new houses.“I used to have glasshouses in this area. Now there are 24 houses where I had them. The land was too valuable and the growers weren’t getting the return, though there is the odd glasshouse floating around here still,” says Keith.Keith sells seedlings from his home and plans to have a new yield ready by August.
A delegation of Nelson business people led by mayor Aldo Miccio departed on a ten-day trip to China this week in an effort to build business links. The Nelson Regional Economic Develop-ment Agency delegation includes business
people drawn from several sectors includ-ing wine, horticulture, general business and education. Aldo says the overarching aim of the trip is to “grow local business and jobs” back in Nelson.
“The purpose of the trip is to build on con-tacts previously made with government officials and business people from Nelson’s sister city, Huangshi, and build relation-ships with new contacts in other Chinese cities.
“We’re specifically looking into trade and investment links with these contacts to create business opportunities for Nelson.” A forum, hosted by the EDA and Aldo, will be held on their return to share potential distribution contacts made on the trip.

NEWS IN BRIEFBEST WINE IN NZ: Brightwater Vineyards swept the floor at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards Trophy Presentation Dinner held in Auckland on Saturday night. Now in it’s 59th year the Royal Easter Show is New Zealand’s oldest wine show and is held in the highest re-gard. Brightwater Vineyards first success was when their Brightwater Vineyards Lord Ruther-ford 2009 Barrique Chardonnay when it was awarded the trophy for Champion Chardonnay of the Show. The same wine then went on to win the trophy for Champion Wine of the Show.
POLICE PHOTOGRAPHER SPEAKS: Nelson police photographer Chris Gladstone will talk about the book ‘Christchurch 22.2: beyond the cordon’ and his experience taking some of the featured photographs following the February Christchurch earthquake. To book contact An-drea King on 546 0403 for more information.
WAIMEA VILLAGE: More protests were held at Waimea Village on Friday, demanding own-ers Michael and Carolyn Wright pull back from their proposed increase of the fees. Around 40 people, mainly elderly, stood with placards, re-ceiving supportive toots from passing cars. The Wrights are attempting to raise the monthly fees the 171 home owners that live there pay from $125 to $284. The residents say they cannot af-ford an increase of that size on a pension. The issue seems bound for arbitration.
RATES ON THE RISE: Nelson City Council has signed off its draft long term plan for audit re-view, proposing an average rates and charges in-crease of 4.6 per cent each year for the first five years, from 1 July 2012. The draft plan will now be reviewed by Audit NZ, with a final version going to the community to have its say from April 16 to May 16.

Nominations to decide the best in the hospitality industry are coming thick and fast, say organisers. The 2012 New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards are being held in May with people now able to nomi-nate their favourite venue, person or menu. Nominations close at the end of this month.Jeanette Swift, of Hospitality New Zealand says dozens of nominations have already been sent in or dropped off at the Nelson Weekly office. She says people wanting to nominate venues should get in quick."The winners of these awards are picked only from those nominated so we encourage everyone who would like to see their 'local' up for an award to fill out the form and drop it off."Nomination forms are printed in Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and the Motueka Golden Bay Guardian. This week's form is on page 10 of this newspaper.
Once you've filled out your nomination form you can drop it off to the Nelson Weekly office on the corner of Selwyn Pl and Trafalgar Sq (next to the Cathedral and looking into the back of Fashion Island) in central Nelson or the Waimea Weekly office at 6 Salisbury Rd in Richmond.Once nominated, readers will have the opportunity to vote for the winners which will be announced at an awards evening on May 14.Jeanette says she has been impressed with the number of en-tries. "The hospitality industry in Nelson and Tasman is really strong and it's great that people are already coming forward with nominations for their favourites. "These awards are really prestigious and we want the people of Nelson and Tasman to have their say about who they think is the best in the region."Nominations close at 12 noon on March 31.
More than a thousand people got down and dirty at the annual Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy Adventure Fun Run on the weekend. Nayland College students Sharleena
Snape, Shilah McCoy and Neve Ri-ley, all 13, were some of many that took to the estuaries between Tas-man and Kina as they battled boggy mud, cold water and each other
over a 2 km course. Officially, 1008 people took part, 200 more than last year. It also doubled the number of participants from the event’s first year. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The middle of March has arrived, and it’s time to relax and enjoy a peaceful bath at the end of your busy day.My focus for the week: Lush – Brand new products have arrived in the store, 16 in fact. The new rose range, has such an alluring feminine fragrance and is absolutely beautiful for your skin with Argan oil in the body conditioner. Bath bombs with names like rose queen, phoenix rising, twilight, fizz banger and Mrs Whippy just make you want to run a hot steamy bath and make it irresistible. The cocoa butter produced from a Peace Community is made into a massage bar called ‘Peace’. The emotion that this evoked when I smelt it was calm and content, a contemplative blend. For those lovers of macaroons and bubbles they have the bubbleroons, all three are devine, bergamot, orange and coconut, and rose jam. Also for those who love a sophisticated shimmer, Lustre Body Powder leaves a glamorous sheen over your skin. The team are super in love with their new products and cannot wait to share them with you.Have a fabulous week and I look forward to seeing you at Fashion Island. Susan

TUESDAY 20 March 2012 This Week8
I hope I never get divorced; otherwise I put my-self through some of the most stressful days of my life for nothing. It is wedding season in Nelson at the moment and earlier this month I joined the fun and got married. While a wedding may be the day young girls dream about, it was one I didn’t think much about at all until about a week before. Sarah, my new wife, had been planning it for about a year but being the hopeless male I am, I jumped on board and tried to help two days out. I wish I hadn’t.We had around 140 guests and pulling together musicians, flowers, catering, photographers, a celebrant, suits, wedding dress, decorating, hir-ing of tables, people to serve drinks at the cer-emony and trying to spend time with visiting family members all at the same time is not easy.Add on top of that a predicted “weather bomb” was due to grace our garden ceremony. Let’s just say things got a little intense. One of the more comical (now) moments was when my best man came around to try on his suit on Thursday night (less than two days before the big day). The crotch hung to his knees and the cuff of the pants was at least a metre too long on each leg and no, I’m not kidding.First thing Friday morning I frantically called the suit hire place in Auck-land and told them I needed new pants to-day. They told me they would put it on overnight delivery and hopefully it would get there. “Good luck”, they said, “here’s the tracking number”.Around lunchtime on Friday I called the courier to make sure it was all on track. “Yes, that will ar-rive on Monday morning,” I was informed. It turns out my mate at the suit place gave me the wrong tracking number. A few frantic phone calls later it was established the pants were on track to arrive Saturday morning, hours before the wedding. With my mum and her sewing machine on standby, my best man slid on the pants exactly one hour before Sarah was due to walk down the aisle. They were a perfect fit.Fortunately, that was where my stress ended. The clouds cleared and sun shone, everything came together, the only other hitch was the lump in my throat during speeches. As a guest, weddings are fun, I’ve enjoyed being invited and rocking up for a night of dancing and free booze, sometimes with an RSVP, sometimes not. I’m embarrassed about my flippancy now and would say to anyone invited to a wedding, RSVP straight away, don’t try to change the seat-ing plan or ask for special food requirements. Turn up, have fun, tell the bride she looks amaz-ing and don’t whinge about anything else. To anyone planning a wedding, good luck, it’s hard work but it’s also the greatest day of your life. I can see now what all the fuss is about… but don’t get me wrong – I would not want to do it again.PS: I would like to personally thank Blinc Ca-tering for the job they did for our wedding. The food was amazing and I would happily recom-mend them for any other weddings. They did a fantastic job. Well done guys!

Treasure hunter Riley O’Hara, centre, just might have struck it lucky at the Big Dig at Tahuna Beach on Sunday. Close to 200 people turned out in search of the little coloured discs and their corresponding prizes, with more than one adult get-ting amongst the sand to stake their claim. The event is part of the Child Cancer Foundation appeal month.

Each trip requires crew to help work the ship and pay its way, giving hundreds of young trav-ellers from all over the world the opportu-nity of a lifetime, learning how to sail the traditional way.Alvei, an impressive sight while docked at Port Nelson, started life in the 1920s as a herring drifter in Scotland, was found as a cargo ship in Norway and is now Evan’s pride and joy. He bought it in Norway in 1986 before taking it to Portugal and start-ing the process of turning it from a cargo ship to a sail schooner, a process he thought would take two years – it took eight. It has seven kilometres of rope on board, weighing a tonne. It has a massive motor and masts which weigh a tonne each. After refurbishment, Evan sailed Alvei to the Caribbean and then to New Zealand. He now calls Nelson home and each sum-mer for the past 13 years, brings Alvei back to Port Nelson for repairs and upgrades before heading back to Fiji in the winter for charity work with a fresh crew.It works as a co-operative. No one gets paid and there are no passengers, everyone pays US$250 per week to be on board and works as one of the 17 crew members. For
that they receive the experience of a life-time, food and water.Evan says he is currently looking for a few more crew members for this year’s voyage and has flyers up in local backpackers. Al-ready he says he has an American, a Cana-dian, a Swede, a German, a Dane, French, a Kiwi and an Australian. “It’s a good mix and fortunately this time everyone can speak good English. It’s not always the case.”Alvei is due to leave Nelson early next month and when in Fiji will work with the Honor Fiji Project which works with the youth of Fiji. Evan says the motivation for people to come on board varies but the experience certainly helps people “find themselves”.Finishing the Fiji project in Au-gust, the crew will then head to Vanuatu for several weeks. Evan says he loves being at sea and the crew do too, most of the time.“This is my home; this is where I feel the most com-fortable. It’s sometimes what they [crew] expect and some-times it’s not what they expect. Sometimes, and this is payday for us, sometimes people write and say they had the best time of their lives with us. Sometimes people write back and tell us to get lost
and they didn’t enjoy it at all. Whatever their expectations were they didn’t find them and go away unhappy.”Evan says the backpacker mentality of get-ting stuck in has meant very few problems. “We’ve been very lucky and usually get
great crews. It’s really nice to see it on the open seas, sails in full flight.”Anyone keen to find out more about work-ing as a crew member for the winter can visit www.alvei.com or call Evan on 021 111 8501.

After 26 years of civil war the peo-ple of Sri Lanka will be getting a hand rebuilding their homes, thanks to a group of Nelsonians.Led by Julian Shields, a Habitat for Humanity team from Nelson will help build homes in parts of Sri Lanka this August, along with oth-er teams from all over the world. But they are looking for more vol-unteers to join them. Julian says anyone can take part. “I’m looking for 13 companions and one build-er to join my team. We will work alongside the family recipients of the house we help to build.”To find out more call Julian on 027 454 3987 or email him at [email protected].
Nelson hip-hop’s favour-ite son, The Kurnel MC, is heading off to the UK so he’s throwing a farewell party at Smith’s Ford this Saturday to celebrate. The Kurnel, or as he is known by his family and friends, Luke Epapara, is well known amongst Nel-sonians for his half-time displays at the Nelson Gi-ants games, his career with Master Pilot and more re-cently, fronting the Kenbe La anthem to fundraise for earthquake-torn Haiti.Luke will be moving to Bournemouth on the South Coast of England with his wife Karen and their two kids. The main reason be-hind the shift will be meet-ing his wife’s family. Karen is from England. “She’s been living out here ten years and we’ve got two kids now and there’s a whole other half of the fam-ily to go over and meet,” he says. But of course, secondly,
Luke hopes the move will boost his music career. “It’s just time to go out and see the world really. I haven’t done an O.E or anything like that so this is a prime opportunity to do that with the kids. I’ve got some good contacts over there with my music so hopefully I can tap into those.”The owners of the Maitai Valley Motorcamp came up with the idea about throw-ing the farewell gig. It will feature some of the region’s top artists in the genre. “There’s some dope Nelson acts playing so it’s going to be great playing with the crew I’ve got to know all these years,” says Luke who will also perform. There will be free buses running to the event and there is a bar on site. The concert is R18 and there is B.Y.O although glass is not allowed. Tickets can be purchased from Everyman Records for $20. Door sales will be $30.
The Kurnel MC, aka Luke Epapara, is heading off to the Unit-ed Kingdom and will be celebrating with a farewell concert up Smith’s Ford this Saturday. The Kurnel’s Last Stand will be host-ing by Level MC, Shaun Connolly. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

TUESDAY 20 March 2012
Torrent Bay in the Abel Tas-man has always been signif-icant to my fiancée and his family. One warm and sunny day at Frenchman’s Bay, I was walking along the wa-ter’s edge, with our puppy Rascal at my heels, admiring our beautiful picnic spot, when Evan walked towards me. I smiled, thinking how sweet it was he had come to walk me to our picnic, when he took my hands and said “Ana”. Evan then got down on one knee and said “Will you make me the happiest man in the world and say yes to mar-rying me?” He then pulled a small black box from his pocket and revealed the exact ring of my dreams! I
was so shocked - I couldn’t
say any-
thing but “You’re crazy!” I got down on my knees and hugged and kissed him and he put the ring on my finger. He then said “You haven’t ac-tually said yes yet”, to which
I replied “Of course it’s yes! Nothing would make me happier!” It was an amazing,
magical moment in time that I will never
forget. It made us very happy that Evan’s dad was the first person we told and that he could go home and tell Carole, Evan’s mum. In the couple of months before, Carole had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and we knew she would be so happy for us. We have just recently lost Carole to her illness and the family misses her dearly, especially Evan’s father Jeff. They were married for 44 years and had been in love since they were teenagers.
To share this special news with Carole before she
passed, Jeff, and our other loved ones, makes our engage-ment story so mean-ingful and beautiful. Evan and I can’t wait to create more mem-ories together as hus-band and wife.

Puzzle fills Stoke loungeIt could barely fit in the lounge but now that Margaret Lankshear has finished a monster 18,240 piece puzzle, it’s destined for the wall.Measured at five square metres, the 70-year-old Stoke resident claims the jigsaw to be the second largest in the world available for commer-cial purchase.Margaret is keen on making puzzles and her Richmond family thought the 18,000 piece one, bought from a lady in Queenstown, would have stumped her. But with their help every time they visited, the puzzle was no match for Margaret, despite one hiccup – there was a piece missing. After numerous urgent phone calls to family, Margaret thought the piece was gone forever. Single puzzle pieces can be bought online if you have misplaced them. But when it was located in Germany, Margaret embarrassingly found it under her bed. The puzzle depicts four well known-landscapes from around the globe.Margaret did the puzzle in four quarters and joined them together, with a large group of relatives on Thursday. “Once you got the first one done you knew the run of the ropes,” she says. “It’s nice to see them together. It’s going to be ex-pensive wall paper.”Her next challenge is another puz-zle given to her by a family mem-ber. It is a puzzle that looks like baked beans. “I put that one on hold.”

Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: My tenant, in the flat under my house, originally agreed to pay half the power costs. She has changed her mind, as she says she doesn’t use half so won’t pay half. How can we resolve this?
A: You can only ask for half the cost of the power if you know your tenant is using half. You can only know this if there is a meter specifically for her.
Sponsored by New Zealand Lotteries
You could install a check meter that measures her power usage, which you will both need to read together, each month. Then work out from your power bill, how much she owes you. Don’t forget to include half the daily meter costs, GST and prompt payment discount. If you don’t wish to install a check meter, you
can only charge her a fixed amount each week for power, which you must both agree on.
We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Nelson Scouts earn top awardsNelson’s recent form of producing Queen Scout winners continued last week when 18 year-old Jacob Chandler was presented with the organi-sation’s highest award.Jacob is a fourth Nelsonian in as many years to collect the honour, following a drought of around 15 years. He will be officially presented with the award by the Governor General at a cer-emony this winter. The region also celebrated three scouts earning the chief scout award. Ben Smith and Max Con-nolly, both from Wakefield, received the award along with Georgie Holdaway from the Iron Duke Sea Scouts in Nelson. Georgie says she spent around three years work-ing towards the badge and has organised regat-tas and community projects as part of her work towards the award. Bridget Smith, a local coor-dinator for Scouts, says it’s fantastic news to see
so many local teenagers achieving the milestone. “It’s not easy to get and takes a lot of dedication and hard work. This is a big highlight for us and we have another few coming through working towards their Queen Scout now.”She says all of the chief scout winners are plan-ning on entering Venturers which will see two new Venturer groups set up in the region. Jacob says he is pretty proud to receive the badge and he had to do plenty of work to get it.“I had to do a lot of community service, helping in the Scouts and at the SPCA and I had to earn personal badges as well,” says the Nayland Col-lege student. At a recent Scout camp near Brightwater, Jacob organised the entire weekend for the 65 Scouts, including a timetable and cooking arrange-ments.Georgie, a Nelson College for Girls student, says she is now looking forward to Venturers and es-tablishing a group at the Sea Scouts den.

In the Nelson Weekly’s front-page article of March 13, the Nelson mayor is braying that his Rugby World Cup venture has earned $14 million (the sum predicted by BERL) with a net $9 million profit. The gate takings for the games were lost to the IRFU organi-
sation and Aldo has forgotten to mention the $7 million-plus which the ratepayer has paid for the glass lawn and new seating at Trafalgar Park. The much vaunted influx of visitors was only worth about $5 million so most of the rest of the receipts came from the local population. As with the rest of the city’s events, Aldo’s bid for the Un-der-20 World Football Cup is
doomed to financial disaster for the ratepayers and should be resisted by the citizens. Al-do’s financial spin on the Rugby World Cup results as reported on the front page last Tuesday left too much undisclosed and needs to be challenged by the ratepayers.

Buying a home or investment property is probably the biggest investment you will ever make, and just like having a mechanic check out a car, it’s the wise investor who has the building checked out by an expert prior to purchasing. Keith and Bronwyn Langham of ASAP Building Inspections Ltd provide a comprehensive report on the property’s current condition in an easy to understand format, following the NZ Standard for pre-purchase inspections. It also indentifies any maintenance work required. They can include a comparison with the council records to identify any unauthorised work that should have had council approval. When it comes to houses the pair know their stuff, with over 60 years combined experience in the building industry, working together in either building houses, running their own building and project management company, and working in the building department of council. Keith holds a National Diploma in Construction Management and is a member of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand. “A house may seem ok, but without getting expert advice on the actual condition of the house you may be putting your hard earned money at risk,” says Keith. GRASS GETTING TOO LONG?PROPERTY GETTING OUT OF CONTROL?
When is the best time to fertilise your lawn? The only real rule is not to fertilise dur-ing winter or after the first frosts. Now is the best time while the grass is in a good active growing phase and it will encour-age good root production over the win-ter period. With granular fertiliser make sure rain is on the way, or water in well, otherwise the grass can get burnt off. When is the best time to do your pruning? As a rule the best time to prune fruit trees is in late Autumn or early winter as the plants become dormant. Try to avoid pruning through a period of harsh frosts as this can damage the plants. For
shrubs, roses and citrus the best time to prune is in late winter or at the begin-ning of spring as this will encourage new growth and give a better structure to the plant.Have you got any tips that average gardener may not know?An upturned clay pot makes an excellent snail and slug trap in your garden. Lime in the cement of old used brick can harm certain plants. Over crowded plants are more susceptible to insect damage and disease. Trees have a strong and a weak side. The stronger side will have larger roots and should be planted facing the prevailing winds.
What sort of projects have you worked on?We have been fortunate to be involved in some very interesting and diverse pro-jects. We worked with Wakatu incorpo-ration to design their new office. We have recently completed a private residence in Fiji for some Christchurch clients and were just awarded an NZIA award for the new emergency building in the Picton Marina. What inspires your design? As an Architect you are inspired by many things, a beautiful landscape, art, peo-ple, and other famous Architects. There is nothing more inspiring than walking
onto a client’s site for the first time and feeling how the site will respond to a building. You want the site and the build-ing to become one and be in harmony. What does an Architect offer ?If you want to live in a home or work in a space that is beautiful and is crafted to suit you, then you must employ an archi-tect to help you transform your ideas into reality. A good Architect has the ability to create space and forms that will capture their client’s imagination. Being an Ar-chitect is exciting, inspiring and very re-warding, it is something that I love to do.
What do you specialise in?The design and installation of quality de-signer wardrobe organisation systemsWhat makes Simply Wardrobes stand out ahead of the competition? We offer a friendly personal service and top quality workmanship. Our cabinets and shelving are all made from 25mm thick melamine boarding and you do not pay extra to choose from our range of classic colours. What range of Wardrobe systems do you sell? Our range starts from the entry level I-Robe suitable for closet cupboards or a walk in wardrobe, our contemporary de-sign pole system, and the top of the range cabinet system with solid backs.
Do you sell sliding doors?Yes our robust sliding system ensures a “whisper quiet” smooth slide with no catching or jumping from the tracks, and of course they are available in a range of prefinished colours and designs, we can even fit them with soft close catches for the ultimate finishing touchCan we do our own installation?Yes our prefabricated system comes with full instructions and we are available to give advice. We are using a building company and the wardrobes are included in the package. You may have a P.C sum included in your builders quote. This does not necessarily mean you have to use the wardrobe com-pany that they recommend.

Celtic Pipe Band of Stoke won its grade at the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships held in Tauranga last weekend. The band has competed at only one previous national contest, 2010, at which they gained third place. There were seventeen bands in the grade from all over New Zealand and Australia. The judges commented on the extremely high standard of competition and it being very close between the top bands in the grade. Pipe Major Bryce Gilchrist says he is "absolutely thrilled" with this result. "We are a very new band with a lot of young people, who have worked very hard and did an excellent job on the day. This is awesome for the top of the south. The other band competing in the district, City of Nelson, also did very well. It is great to see the strength of pipe bands in the region”.The band competed in three compulsory events: a set which is a march, strathspey and reel, a medley in which the band orchestrates its own musi-cal presentation and a street march. The band is planning to put on a concert in a few months’ and is looking forward to presenting its special style of pipe band music to the wider Nel-son Community. But the immediate priority for the band is going to be a focus on recruitment and the next intake of young players. For further details contact Bryce Gilchrist on 547 4594.

If there is one thing you can expect with a Theatre Alive performance it's comedy and the group’s latest show will certainly not disappoint says its director Hugh Neill. The 39 Steps will open at the Theatre Royal this Thursday night and is a spoof of Alfred Hitch-cock's famous film.Set in the 1920's the show follows the dashing Richard Hannay – played by Daniel Allan of Body in Space – as he attempts to figure a way out of a spy drama he fell into and his various romantic entanglements that come along with it.Hugh says the show is plenty of fun and will get the crowd laughing.
"It's a comic imitation of the movie and it is very funny. People will think they've come to a build-ing site when they arrive but it's up to the char-acters to make the set as they go."Between the four actors they play more than 100 characters says Hugh."It's really fast paced and under this spy story, mayhem and hilarity there is a love story."The show opens at 7.30pm this Thursday night and will play until the end of the month. For ticketing information call the box office at the Theatre Royal on 548 3840 (option 2) or www.theatreroyalnelson.co.nz or visit www.tick-etdirect.co.nz.

Big week for Nelson touch as local makes NZ teamThe Tasman Under-17 girls team may have finished at the bottom of the ladder at the Junior National Touch Champi-onship held in Tahunanui over the weekend, but one of the players still couldn’t keep a smile off her face.Nelson College for Girls star Rebecca Kersten has been named in the Touch Blacks for its upcoming test match against Australia in April. The 16 year-old will be the youngest in the open women team by at least two years, she says, adding that her selection came as a huge shock. “I’m really happy. I wasn’t expecting it,” says Rebecca. “I was thinking maybe next year I’d have a better shot at it.”Rebecca, who is sponsored by Hamish Fletcher Lawyers, had been involved in training squads over the past few months, before she received the phone call from New Zealand selec-tors just days before the nationals. The full squad is officially named in the coming weeks. Touch New Zealand will also be announcing Under-15 and Under-17 squads, which could include more Nelson players. Her rapid rise in the summer sport is a credit to her college coach, Cyril Collier and his rigorous fitness training. She says there could be more Nelson players joining her in the future. “I’m the only one from the South Island that made it, but Nelson is becoming more and more looked at. We’ve got quite a few players making age group players. The coaches have put a lot of time in it and we’ve got so many natural athletes.”Her first goal is to make the 14-person match day squad.

Wakatu falls at the final hurdleA quick start with the bat gave Waimea Toi Toi United an early advantage that was too hard to chase down in the Kel-vin Scoble Trophy one-day cricket final on Sunday.Brewer’s Bar Wakatu could only man-age 201/9 in reply, chasing 240 for vic-tory at Saxton Oval.Matt Macquet top scored for Wakatu and earned himself a half century. He also picked up two wickets with the ball.Greg Hay was the star for Robbies Bar & Bistro WTTU smashing 62 runs off 82 balls. Openers Craig Ingham and skipper Jon Routhan punished the side
in the opening ten overs, racing away to 60 runs without loss, giving them the foundation to push towards a comfort-able score.Wakatu’s Greg DuFeu says the team started poorly. “210-220 was a better target for us. They probably got a few too many runs at the beginning. We pulled it back quite a bit and picked up three wickets, but it was a terrible start, plus we dropped four catches.”Both sides head back to the Nelson Cricket one-day competition which heads into the final round this weekend before playoffs start in a fortnight.

While much has been said about the arrival of English stars Joe Green and Ben Wright, it is some of the more familiar faces that have had the club talking in recent weeks.Former A-League player Mike White, who more recently spent time with Team Welling-ton and Canterbury United, is on the radar of Nelson Suburbs Mainland Premier League team and could sign in the coming days. The 25 year-old attack-ing midfielder, who went to Waimea College and Nayland College before signing with the New Zealand Knights in 2006, has been to a handful of train-ing sessions. Other significant signings in-clude former captain Michael Bothwell, New Zealand Un-der-20 goal keeper Coey Tu-ripa, Wesley Olea, Matt Shaw and Matthew Elliott. Waitakere United left back Jordan Swaney, a former Rich-mond Athletic player, is also likely to join, as are three more Solomon Islanders.Gagame and regulars Mark Johnston and Erik Panzer will join the squad once their ASB Premiership duties are over. The only notable departures from the squad are midfielder Simon Gatward-Smith, for-ward Jerry Donga and young-sters Isaiah Dayman, Darrell Hannah and Fox Slotemaker.Nelson Suburbs beat FC Nel-son 9-0 in a pre-season match
at Saxton Oval on Saturday with Ben scoring five of the goals off the bench.Suburbs open their Mainland League campaign at Saxton Field this Saturday at 12:30pm.

Fishing Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club
with
Last weekend saw a few Dawn breakers heading down to the Ke-nepuru Sound to see for themselves if there were any snapper about. Sat-urday was an absolute stunner of a day with ideal conditions, no wind and a strong incoming tidal flow. The team aboard Ron Prestage’s boat were helping Crop and Food with snapper research. Although the day was ideal the fishing was a bit hit and miss, with the exception of Kevin Bannan who landed an ex-cellent 16lb snapper.Another group that fished that weekend from Saturday night until Monday morning were not quite so fortunate facing some inclem-ent weather, the most frustrating being the wind and tide going in differ-ent directions. They also found the fish-ing very slow with only two fish caught over this period. Cheryl McKay out -fished hubby over this time though by landing a nice 12lb snapper, and took great delight in reminding him all weekend.Rabbit Island is still fishing well by all accounts. The water tempera-ture is still quite warm, so hope-fully they will stay around for a lit-tle while longer. We haven’t heard of any groper or kingfish in around D’urville Island but they will start to turn up shortly. The Dawnbreakers Fishing club has a monthly bugger award for some-thing that goes awry whenever the boat leaves the garage and there are some classics. If you own a boat , or know someone who has does you
will have firsthand knowledge on how quickly things can go from bad to worse in a light hearted way. So we thought we would share one of those moments, that you're glad it wasn’t you. We know this member won’t mind you reading his best ef-fort so far.Good mate Peter Connolly decided to take his family for a trip out of Okiwi Bay, so after they launched the boat Pete’s wife Marilyn went and parked the trailer and headed back to the beach. She was greeted with Peter doing doughnuts in the bay and their daughter holding the bungs in her hand. So Pete decides to beach the front of the boat so
Marilyn can hold it and keep the trim tabs and sound-er sensors out in deeper water while he jumps over and replaces the miss-ing bungs. Over the side Pete goes with bungs in hand, then realised he forgot he had his brand new
cell phone in his pants pocket which was now submerged in the ocean. With the boat still taking on water faster than the Costa Concordia this captain wasn’t going to just slip into a lifeboat and disappear into the crowd, oh no, Pete decides to take the plunge and under the back of the boat he goes with bungs in hand. But he had forgotten one last thing, he was still wearing his auto inflate life jacket!!!!! Bang, pop whizzzzz goes the jacket the moment it goes under the water and Pete’s looking like the Michelin man floating on the ocean. This must go down as one of the all-time classics.

Nelson Bays Football development officer George Campbell, right, with young football star Van Roland Hlawnceu and Fresh Choice Nelson owner Mark A'Court. Mark donated $500 to Van's travel expenses. George says a number of young football stars in Nelson have the opportunity to travel to tourna-ments outside the region to further grow their skills but some families struggle with the costs associated. He says NBF has a fund for young players to access to make sure they don't miss out on op-
portunities due to cost. Mark says Fresh Choice Nelson gives a donation to a community group each month and he tries to mix it up over a range of groups and organisations. "It's nice that we are able to spread it, it's really what I'm about, trying to give to all sorts. George shops here and it's also nice to have that connection to a local shopper."George says he is rapt Mark has come on board to help. "It's nice that local businesses like Fresh Choice help our local players and local clubs." Photo: Andrew Board.

Sailing awayThe region’s top secondary school sailors will take to Nelson Haven this weekend in close to 200 short and “ex-citing” races.Teams from Waimea, Nayland, Nelson College’s, along with Nelson College for Girls, Motueka High School and three high schools from Marlborough will battle for supremacy and qualifi-cation to nationals later this year. The regionals are being held over three days from this Sunday just off the Boathouse – HQ for the event. The teams’ racing sees schools go head-to-head with each race featuring three boats of two sailors from each school. The winning team is the one with the fewest points from the race with the winner receiving one point, second
place two points and so forth. Each races lasts about six minutes.Head coach for each of the schools, Josh Edmonds, says he will be an in-terested spectator. “I think it will be really close, the schools are really well matched.”The sport is supposed to be non-contact but Josh says the boats have bumpers “for a reason”.He says the class is recognised by Yachting New Zealand as being a re-ally good foundation for sailors.Spectators are encouraged to either watch from the Boathouse deck or along the walkways on Rocks Rd.“It will be exciting to watch and the teams will be going pretty full on to try to beat each other,” says Josh.Racing starts at 10.30am each day.
The Grasshoppers Invitational Tour-nament, for eight year olds and under, took place at the Nelson Tennis Club on Friday afternoon with record entries for the twice a year tournament.Marshall Hore of the Wakefield Club, who was the winner of the tournament in November 2011 was back to defend his title against the other 17 boys. Win-ning the pool play convincingly he then beat Cam Inglis of Stoke Tennis Club 21-6 in the semi-final. The other semi-final saw Luca Molnar of Nelson Lawn Tennis Club beat Ryan Mairs of Upper Moutere 16-6. This set up a repeat final with a great spectacle to finish the day. The timed matches saw the buzzer go at 14 points all, therefore one sudden death point to be played to determine the winner. A long deep baseline rally saw Luca hit the last shot
out by one centimetre giving Marshall the title. The girl’s tennis was just as exciting to watch with 15 girls competing with the semi-final between Olivia Smith and Claudia Miccio both of the Stoke Club. Olivia won this match 15-8. The other semi-final saw Rani McGuire of Wake-field Club back to defend her 2011 title. Rani was up against Farrah Richards of Nelson Lawn Tennis Club and in a match that went right down to the wire saw Rani take the match 10-9.The final between Olivia and Rani was a repeat of the 2011 final which Rani won by one point, however it was Olivia’s day, winning the final 15-8.Fair play awards went to Daniel Os-borne of Hope Club, Alyssa Curtis of Tahuna Tennis Club and Rachel Wake-lin of Nelson Lawn Tennis Club.

Kauri kids beckonsThe Port Nelson Kauri Kids Aquathon is coming up this Sunday at the Botanical Reserve in Nelson. December’s deluge and track damage means there will be an adjusted run course this year, however all will still sight the majestic kauri tree making its way skywards on Botanical Hill.Once down on terra firma the NBS in-flatable is not the only obstacle in the way as a cargo net and tyre challenge has to be navigated before all find their way along to Riverside Pool for two lengths
and the finish. The event is open to school children in Years 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 with the emphasis on a fun day out. Many will watch their fathers earlier in the day as they test themselves in the Port Nelson Blokes Day Out Men’s Triathlon, and their mums a week later in the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Taylors Nelson Women’s Triathlon - completing the Port Nelson Family Challenge. Full details and online entry available at www.nelsonevents.co.nz.
IN BRIEFRUGBY: The Rugby World Cup will be in Nelson tomorrow visiting schools and being displayed for the public. The tour is part of a massive, nationwide rugby tour to say ‘thank you, New Zealand’, for the succesful hosting of the cup. It will be at the Tahunanui Reserve from 3 to 6pm on Wednesday, March 21.
RUGBY: Nayland College is hosting a “old school v new school” social rugby game this Friday at the school and is calling for old boys to come forward. All players will meet at 4pm with the game at 5pm followed by dinner at the Ocean Lodge with this year’s Press Cup team. “Meet the boys, socialise with old team mates, throw your boots on and have relive the glory days,” says coach Ant Holder. If you’re keen to play, contact Ant on 027 229 7266 or [email protected].
RUNNING: Saturday’s Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon and 10km couldn’t have got any better. Phil Costley is the master, a few clicks over 67 minutes in last month’s Buller half marathon and backed it up going under 69 on Saturday on a much more demanding course to take the win. Next running event for Nelson Events is April’s Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake closing in on its new 400 ca-pacity with 43 slots left. Full results from Sat-urday on www.nelsonevents.co.nz.
