The name “John Kennedy” is well known to all who know even a little history, especially from the 1960’s, when President John F. Kennedy led the US from January 1961 until his horrendous assassination in November 1963.

But for Victorians - and not just followers of VFL/AFL football - the name ”John Kennedy” certainly invokes recognition of leadership, courage, strength and integrity. But while it would be the same name, it would be about a different “John Kennedy”.

His death on Thursday after a lifetime of service to the community (and by no means to the football community alone) has meant the loss of one of the really great Victorians of the past seventy years.

3-time Premiership coach, Victorian captain, AFL Commission chairman - he was all of these, but perhaps most importantly, more importantly, he was a leader and a teacher.

Teaching was his chosen profession in those days when football was only a part-time job or interest, and a “real job” was essential for all.

John Kennedy was truly a “teacher’s teacher”, heading up the Association of Principals, following a distinguished career as an educator of children. The age of his “students” was then raised to the young men who were his charges at Hawthorn

and North Melbourne, and in time to the many people, of all ages, who admired his integrity, honoured his commitment, and marvelled at his capacity to inspire others to give of their best.

And he was a man of Faith, with the Mass as a constant source of strength and leadership. During the 80’s and 90’s, he would often travel from his Camberwell home to St. John’s Mitcham to attend the 6.45am weekday Mass. He would say this put the rest of his day in focus, and begin it with the best start possible. And this was arguably the most effective lesson he ever taught. May his fine soul rest in God’s loving peace.

Hawthorn great John Kennedy Sr. has been remembered as a “giant” of the game who was the epitome of inspiration. Kennedy Sr.– who was only weeks ago elevated to Legend status into the Australian football Hall of Fame - passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, aged 91. The former Hawthorn player and coach, who led the Hawks to three premierships before a shift to North Melbourne, was honoured for his contribution to the game that is said will live forever. League chairman Richard Goyder said Kennedy “gave everything he possibly could to both Hawthorn and North Melbourne in the pursuit of success, but his approach to life and how it should be lived, was imparted upon all who moved within his circle, be that as a player, a coach, a mentor to emerging leaders within the game or the head of the game itself when he was chair of the AFL Commission. He was rightly named a Legend of the Game earlier this year, and on behalf of the wider game, we are delighted that he was able to receive this honour and be celebrated for his contribution”. Fellow Australian football Hall of Fame Legend Kevin Bartlett said “to be in his company was uplifting. A giant of the game,” he said. “A life well lived”.

PRAYER GROUPS AND OTHER PARISH MEETINGS

As you will probably be aware, the planned increase in Mass attendance from 20 to 50, due to come into force last Monday, 22 June 2020, has been deferred due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Melbourne. The Victorian Government has also put a limit of 10 on any prayer group or equivalent religious meeting which is face-to-face or in person. Sacraments have a range of limits depending on the type of ceremony, while Mass attendance remains limited to 20 people. To make it simple for people trying to plan Parish activities in accordance with the restrictions, all Parish group meetings, (other than Mass attendance and approved sacraments) will be limited to a maximum of 10 people, including those run-ning the meeting. All meetings will be held in the Hall in the Parish Centre, which is set up for 10 people at the required 1.5m social distance. To use the space for an approved meeting you must: 1. Nominate a supervisor who is responsible for compliance

with these required procedures (if the meeting is attended by a staff member, they will normally be the designated supervisor unless they appoint someone else)

2. Book the space through the Parish Office to ensure it is available – please don’t just assume it will be

3. Receive an access code to use with the electronic lock – please contact the Parish office for that code

4. Use the tables and chairs as laid out – please do not move them

5. Capture in writing a list of all attendees, including at least first name and contact phone number

6. Clean the area thoroughly after use, including all desks used and any other surfaces or door handles touched

7. Submit the list of names and confirmation that cleaning has been done to the Parish office as soon as possible after the meeting

Please contact Peter Evans, Parish Business Manager, on 9764 4058 or [email protected] if you have any queries about this. We will notify you when the procedure changes.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK

If you volunteer for any of our Parish Ministries and Groups, you may have attended a presentation back in February this year, where you were handed a statement of Commitment, Policy, Procedures and Code of Conduct for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable People. If you still have it and have not reviewed or returned the documents, please do so soon.

If you did not attend the presentation back in February and have not got the statement of Commitment, Policy, Procedures and Code of Conduct for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable People, please pick up a copy from the Parish Office.

If you do not have a “Working With Children Check” Card, please apply for one online by visiting:

https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

If you already have a Card, click “Update my Details”.

If you don’t have a WWCC Card, click: “Apply for a Check”.

In both cases, follow the prompts and make sure that “St. Simon the Apostle Parish – 2 Taylors Lane, Rowville, 3178 – 03 9764 4058” is added to “Organisation Details”. Under the field “Child-related work”, choose category “64-Religious Organisation” or click the link “MyCheck Account.”

Please note that ALL volunteers need to have reviewed and signed the statement of Commitment, Policy, Proce-dures and Code of Conduct for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable People, as well as the “WWCC” card.

Please provide the Parish Office with your “WWCC” details so we can complete and update our records.

If you don’t have access to the Internet or need help to do the above, please call the Parish Office.

First reading 2 Kings 4:8-11,13-16

One day as Elisha was on his way to Shunem, a woman of rank who lived there pressed him to stay and eat there. After this he always broke his journey for a meal when he passed that way. She said to her husband, ‘Look, I am sure the man who is constantly passing our way must be a holy man of God. Let us build him a small room on the roof, and put him a bed in it, and a table and chair and lamp; whenever he comes to us he can rest there.’ One day when he came, he retired to the upper room and lay down. He said to his servant Gehazi, ‘Call our Shunammitess. Tell her this: “Look, you have gone to all this trouble for us, what can we do for you? Is there anything you would like said for you to the king or to the commander of the army?”’ But she replied, ‘I live with my own people about me.’ ‘What can be done for her then?’ he asked. Gehazi answered, ‘Well, she has no son and her husband is old.’ Elisha said, ‘Call her.’ The servant called her and she stood at the door. This time next year,’ he said ‘you will hold a son in your arms.’ Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 88(89):2-3,16-19 Second reading

Romans 6:3-4,8-11

When we were baptised in Christ Jesus we were baptised in his death; in other words, when we were baptised we went into the tomb with him and joined him in death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we too might live a new life.

But we believe that having died with Christ we shall return to life with him: Christ, as we know, having

been raised from the dead will never die again. Death has no power over him any more. When he died, he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God; and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus. Gospel Matthew 10:37-42

Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: ‘Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.

‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me.

‘Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet’s reward; and anyone who welcomes a holy man will have a holy man’s reward.

‘If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.’
