PROJECT WINS

Newcastle Light RailIn early August, Downer announced that it had signed a contract with Transport for NSW to be the Managing Contractor for the Newcastle Light Rail project.

Under the contract, Downer will work with Transport for NSW to design, construct and commission 2.7 kilometres of light rail track, six light rail stops, a stabling and maintenance facility, road works and associated precinct works. The track will run from the new transport interchange at Wickham to Pacific Park.

The contract commenced in August and is scheduled to be completed in 2019.

The Chief Executive Officer of Downer, Grant Fenn, said Downer was delighted to have been selected to deliver this important project for Transport for NSW and the people of Newcastle.

“Downer has a long and proud history in Newcastle with our current operations based at sites including Cardiff, Kooragang Island, Port Waratah, Hexham, Teralba and Mt Thorley,” Mr Fenn said. “We provide customers in the Hunter region with a diverse range of services across sectors including road, rail, mining, utilities, technology and communications and engineering, construction and maintenance.

“Downer works closely with Transport for NSW and we look forward to helping them deliver this signature project for Newcastle and to contribute to the revitalisation of the State’s second largest city.”

The Newcastle Light Rail is a key part of the Newcastle Urban Transformation and Transport Program which has been established to deliver the NSW Government’s commitment to revitalise the city. The program aims to bring people back to the city centre by strengthening connections between the city and the waterfront, creating employment opportunities, providing more public space and amenity, and delivering better transport. n

Karara ExtensionDowner has signed a contract extension with Karara Mining Ltd that extends the current contract for a further four years from the original completion date of 28 February 2018 until 31 March 2022.

The value of the additional four years work is estimated to be approximately $350 million.

Downer has been providing mining services to Karara since the magnetite operation commenced production in February 2012.

“This extension is an endorsement of Downer’s strong safety and productivity performance and we look forward to bringing further value to Karara’s operations by reducing operating costs, increasing productivity and enhancing safety,” said Grant Fenn, Chief Executive Officer of Downer. n

PROJECT WINS PROJECT WINS

New Zealand Project WinsDowner’s New Zealand business has had a very successful few months with project wins across a number of sectors.

In August, a joint venture between Downer and McConnell Dowell was awarded the contract to deliver the NZ$195 million second stage of the Christchurch Southern Motorway (CSM2).

CSM2 is the final section in the Canterbury Roads of National Significance (RoNS) portfolio to be awarded and will complete a package of projects designed to address increased travel demand and congestion in the south of Christchurch and Canterbury. The upgraded road network will provide better access to and from the south of Christchurch, the city centre and Lyttelton, by improving the capacity, safety and alignment of the Christchurch Southern Corridor.

CSM2 includes eight kilometres of new four lane motorway, five kilometres of existing SH1 duplication, five kilometres of local roads and adaptions, seven bridges over the new highway and one local road culverted beneath it. Construction will begin in October and is expected to be completed by late 2019.

In July, the Downer-Soletanche Bachy joint venture was awarded one of the first construction contracts for the City Rail Link project, an underground rail line linking Britomart and the Auckland city centre with the existing western line near Mt Eden.

Downer will work closely with Auckland Transport and use its extensive experience with complex engineering projects to help build a better connected Auckland.

In addition, Downer has recently won contracts in New Zealand totalling around A$460 million. These projects include:

n the Coastal Otago Network Outcomes Contract (NOC) which covers routine maintenance and operation of more than 770 kilometres of the State Highway network until July 2023;

n an alliance between Downer and the NZ Transport Agency to manage the Milford Road network including maintenance of State Highway 94, the Homer tunnel and avalanche programs, until July 2024;

n contracts for the maintenance of the urban and rural road networks for Dunedin City Council and Hauraki District Council until June 2019;

n upgrading a six kilometre section of the Waikato Expressway, a project within the Roads of National Significance (RONS) program for the NZ Transport Agency;

n three projects in Christchurch for the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and several projects for Christchurch City Council as part of the Dudley Creek Flood Remediation scheme;

n a number of open space management contracts across the North Island; and

n a project to construct a new wharf and passenger terminal at Half Moon Bay in Auckland as well as a water maintenance contract for Taupo District Council.

The Chief Executive Officer of Downer, Grant Fenn, said:

“These contract wins reflect the strength of our business and the breadth of our capability in New Zealand.”

Congratulations to our Kiwi colleagues! n

Holcim projectDowner took out the top spot at the Civil Contractors NZ Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards in August for the Holcim project in Auckland and Timaru, for projects greater than $30 million.Three years ago, Holcim embarked on a project to secure their strategic future in New Zealand. Downer was engaged to provide Early Contractor Involvement and main construction works for Holcim’s $100 million investment in two new 30,000 tonne cement storage facilities.

Downer engaged and managed over 80 consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers from around the world to build these dome storage facilities in New Zealand. Works also included ship unloading at both sites and ship loading at Timaru, an innovative pneumatic cement transfer system, a cement aeration system, truck load facilities, a flagship office and laboratory, utilities buildings, and mechanical and electrical services to make the plant operational.

OUR BUSINESS OUR BUSINESS

Downer expands its Defence footprint with acquisitionDowner’s footprint in the Defence sector has been expanded with the acquisition of AGIS, a professional services and engineering company.

AGIS provides project management, systems engineering and integration, and capability development advice to a range of government agencies including the Department of Defence, Australian Defence Force and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

AGIS was founded in 2008 and employs more than 70 people, including those with subject matter expertise in specialised Defence fields.

The CEO of Engineering, Construction and Maintenance, Brendan Petersen, said the acquisition represents a significant opportunity for the two companies to combine skills and experience in the Defence sector.

“Defence represents a growth business sector for Downer with significant opportunities in the pipeline over the next 10 to 20 years that fit well within our current capabilities,” he said.

“The Defence sector will continue to be a growth market for the foreseeable future and Downer, with its strong track record in the delivery of Defence projects in Australia and New Zealand, is well placed to take a meaningful role.

“AGIS adds to Downer its historical knowledge and relationships with the Department of Defence and other important government agencies. AGIS’s technical

service ‘smarts’, together with its military credentials, has allowed them to establish themselves as a trusted advisor inside Defence and government, providing both customer-side services and program delivery on major capital projects such as the replacement of deployable wide area networks and test facilities to support the new submarine fleet.

“We are excited about the opportunities created by this new partnership and look forward to continued growth in the future.”

AGIS will retain its brand and the management and operation of the business will remain in place. n

Downer is redeveloping its world-class tyre analysis and reporting software, Otracom, to bring even more value to its users across the globe. The redevelopment project has been awarded to Snowden, the developers of the original Otracom solution and other world-class mining software systems.

In use in seven countries at over 80 mines, Otracom is an internationally recognised Tyre Management System (TMS) that tracks and manages tyres and rims from manufacture to disposal to identify performance trends and, ultimately, reduce tyre-related costs. It provides customers with lifecycle inventory control (including repairs, transfers, scrapped tyres), tyre cost analysis, budgeting and forecasting, real-time alerts and notifications, and business intelligence reporting.

Otracom is a multi-language web and mobile app-based system accessed over the Internet. Customers use Otracom either as part of the Otraco tyre management service or

subscribe to the system itself. Otracom is user-friendly, and provides integration with tyre-pressure management systems (TPMS), fleet management and ERP systems. It is supported from Australia, with support resources also based in South Africa and Chile.

The improved software will address user feedback and suggestions, as well as incorporating new and exciting technologies that will improve performance, user experience and deliver enhanced reporting and analytics for users to drive improved business performance. The redeveloped software is planned for release in early 2017.

Snowden is a mining consultancy and software business that supports mining companies and their investors in evaluating new mines, improving the performance of existing operations and complying with regulatory requirements. Perhaps best known for 30 years of mining technical consulting experience across the globe, Snowden has also developed a growing technology business. Over the past 15 years, Snowden has delivered world-class commercial mining software systems such as Reconcilor and Supervisor, as well as developing and maintaining a number of bespoke systems for some of the largest mining companies in the world.

Snowden and Microsoft form strategic partnershipSnowden has formed a strategic partnership with Microsoft to drive cloud-first solutions to the mining industry. With an agreed strategy to make cloud technologies relevant to mining, both parties are working closely to develop and market Snowden’s new cloud platform.

Due for launch later this year, the new platform will deliver rich end-to-end capability from data import and storage through to the application of advanced analytics, machine learning and visualisation.

The platform is built on the latest services provided by Microsoft’s cutting edge cloud platform, Azure. Snowden’s platform enables the rapid implementation of Internet of Things solutions, ingesting data from devices and traditional data sources alike, extracting valuable insights and presenting those insights through powerful visualisations.

It also delivers high-tech cloud-based applications which leverage the depth of technical mining knowledge in the Snowden team and partners it with the power of scalable cloud computing to provide solutions to complex problems that can be run on a PC, tablet, or even a smartphone.

Providing this level of highly configurable data mining, without the need to install additional software, places Snowden at the forefront in effectively applying this technology to the mining industry. n

The CEO of Snowden, John Hearne, said the support of Microsoft was a strong endorsement.

“Our decision to invest in the development of a world-class cloud platform on the latest technology is something the mining industry is demanding to drive productivity improvements. We look forward to introducing Microsoft’s leading technologies to our customers, and exploring the wealth of opportunities that arise from this association.”

Rob Taylor, Head of Strategic Deals at Microsoft Australia, said:

“Empowering mining organisations to achieve more becomes possible when industry leaders such as Snowden invest and innovate in the sector. We are excited to work with Snowden to bring increased flexibility, scalability and adaptability to mining organisations through this strategic partnership.”

Brendan Swan, Plant Systems Superintendent for Downer’s Mining division, said: “Downer is excited to commence this redevelopment project to upgrade our Otracom software system. We are very happy to have Snowden on board as our partners in this project. Snowden brings innovation, efficiency and professionalism alongside a proven track record of delivering software development projects. Snowden will be working with Downer’s range of domain experts on this project and we look forward to showing our users the enhancements and new capabilities over the coming months”.

John Hearne, CEO of Snowden said: “Snowden is thrilled to be awarded this work and be working with Downer on this exciting project. We are looking forward to implementing state of the art technology to improve all aspects of the user experience and outcomes. This award provides support to our growing technology business.” n

AROUND DOWNER

The first train crossing following the urgent reinstatement work delivered by the VEC team on the Kimberley Rail Bridge.

Flood damaged Kimberley Rail Bridge prior to reinstatement work

VEC delivers TasRail flood damage reinstatement work in record timeOur VEC Civil Engineering business in Tasmania has stepped up to the challenge and delivered flood damage reinstatement work in record time, ensuring critical services are back and running for TasRail.

The reinstatement program of work saw the business completing technically challenging critical infrastructure repair projects including the Kimberley Rail Bridge over the Mersey River in North West Tasmania that partially collapsed and needed embankment reinstatement.

“Our commitment to get the Kimberley Rail Bridge up and running in five weeks delighted our customer, TasRail, who needed this critical infrastructure urgently reinstated,” said Lincoln Bromwich, General Manager, VEC Civil Engineering.

The floods caused extensive damage to the location, and works included geotechnical investigation, design, demolition of collapsed structures, driving steel piles for a new abutment, fabrication and installation of

precast abutment, fabrication and installation of a 45-tonne steel bridge span, construction of 200 lineal metres of rail embankment to a height of four metres, track install and rock protection of the abutment.

In order to meet the tight schedule VEC Civil Engineering utilised its pre-cast concrete fabrication facility to construct the concrete abutment and abutment earth retaining panels.

“The first train passed over the Kimberley Bridge on Thursday 21 July just after 8:30am, in line with our commitment,” said Lincoln.

“Our local Tasmanian team should be very proud of themselves – they delivered a fantastic outcome in tight timelines, safely, and exceeded customer expectations.” n

AROUND DOWNER COMMUNITY

Wesley Mission Vision Valley gets a Downer faceliftMore than 60 workers from our Road Services Network Management team recently pitched in for a day to help improve the facilities at Wesley Mission Vision Valley.

They painted the auditorium, a few rooms and a chapel, repaired a retaining wall, constructed an archery area, cleared an overgrown bushwalk and carried out some other general vegetation clearance.

“We really wanted to engage with our local community and Wesley Mission Vision Valley was the obvious choice for us as they work closely with community groups and underprivileged children. It was great giving something back to them for the services they provide,” said Alison Devereaux, Commercial Manager Infrastructure Services.

“Over the past year, staff at Wesley Vision Valley have supported over 23,000 guests to create memorable experiences and re-learn how to work as a team,” said Andrew Moore, Executive Manager – Conferences and Education at Wesley Mission Vision Valley.

“Keeping a large Australian bush-based conference and recreation facility in good shape is a constant challenge. We are excited to have the team from Downer donating their time and talent to help us paint, regenerate and refresh the site so we can help more people next year.

“Our mission is to do all the good we can, because every life matters and we are grateful to have Downer and their skills on the journey with us,” he said.

“A number of our employees work on the maintenance contract that cover the local area, so having them come in and give a day of their time helping out a local charity was a very meaningful experience for them,” said Stuart Billing, National General Manager – Road Network Management.”

Well done to Alison and the team involved for your community spirit! n

Downer Cadet Goes To Rio!Scott Martlew, a Quantity-Surveyor Cadet in our Christchurch office, has had a last minute call up to represent New Zealand in para-canoe at the Paralympic Games in Rio.

With just over a week until the Paralympics kick-off, Scott, who competed in the World Championships earlier this year, initially missed the cut for Rio by one hundredth of a second. The recent withdrawal of the Russian team resulted in Scott getting a call up and fortunately he was ready to compete.

“I’ve kept training all the way through and sort of hoped that I may get a chance to compete,” he said. “I am incredibly excited about my selection to compete at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. This is the first time para-canoe has been included in the Paralympic Games competition schedule and it is great to be a part of history. I could not be more thrilled to have my dream of representing New Zealand become a reality in Rio.”

Our Christchurch office has doubled as an art gallery with a display of the Spirit of Gold Collection portraits. The portrait collection features 12 athletes, including Scott, and is touring the country as part of the Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) Spirit of Gold campaign in the run up to Rio 2016.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to have the Paralympics New Zealand Spirit of Gold campaign come to Downer’s Christchurch office. Downer, and especially the Christchurch team, have been a big part of my journey and have helped me enormously over the years, so it’s awesome to be able to show off these amazing paintings to my colleagues.

“Each painting represents the athlete’s own journey of hard work and success in their sport - that’s why I selected my location for the paintings to be in the Christchurch office, as a way I can give back to my colleagues and friends to know they have been a part of my journey.”

The Rio 2016 Paralympic Games run from 7-18 September. n
