South Aegean Region (Greece):Mini-Innovation Project 1

The famous “loucoumi” is a local delicacy. It has a long tradition. The art of preparing “loucoumi” was introduced by the refugees of Asia Minor and the island of Chios who came to Syros after 1822. The Syros “loucoumi” is famous for its unique taste and aroma and is known as the very best.

The objection of this mini project is the planning of a modern package, which will protect the delicacy and at the same time itwill compete the new delicacies and be more attractive to the public and also inform people for the historical evolution of the productive procedure of this product.

Tourism for All in Cyclades Region

• Tourism is a human need and everyone should have the ability to travel and entertain himself.

• Tourism for All requires:– Physical access: A built environment in which everyone, including those with restricted physical ability, can travel comfortably without worry about inaccessibility.

– Information access: e.g. an accessible web environment which all people can access information about travel destinations in their preferred way.

Building Accessibility

• The degree to which a building allows access to people with disabilities.

• Tourism facilities must give persons with disabilities equal opportunity to participate in and to benefit from their services.

• Tourism accommodation providers must modify their policies and practices if necessary to provide equal access to services and facilities to all.

• Web accessibility requires that anyonevisiting any Web site using any browser must be able to get full access and complete understanding of the informationand services offered.

• The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential.

Web Accessibility

The Idea

• Internet tends to be the main source for tourism information

+• Disabled people should access information easily

=• Disabled people will be pre-informed about accessible accommodations

• Designing an accessible web site in which people with disabilities can find information about accessible tourist accommodation in Syros island (Cyclades region, Greece).

Project

Project Objectives

• To inform people with disabilities about accessible accommodation and services in Syros island.

• To create awareness for hotel owners about the potential benefits gained.

1. Identification of a framework for evaluating tourist accommodation

– Based on accessibility guidelines provided by the Hellenic Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works. (group 2)

– Describes a basic set of accessibility requirements for major types of customers (tourists) and kinds of accommodation services.

2. Inspection and classification of tourist accommodation, applying the framework

Project Development (1/2)

3. Dissemination of relevant information to hotel owners to create awareness– Leaflet about project goals and benefits.– (local) press release

4. Accessible Web site to illustrate the proof of concept and provide ‘food for thought’ to local communities

Project Development (2/2)

The Web Site

• Introduces users to Syros island and basic accommodationand navigation information with a Google Maps1 user interface

• Indicates accessibility level per resource type and type of user

– Resources: entrance, reception, halls, elevators, rooms, bathrooms, restaurants and parking areas.

– Major users: people with mobility impairments, people with vision impairments, people with hearing impairments, elderly people, parents with prams and children.

• Explains the indications of accessibility

• On line as a test version from 30th June 2007

Signs

Each major user category has its own sign.

Accessibility levels are three:

• Green for full accessibility.

• Yellow for possible accessibility.

• Red for inaccessibility.

Rooms of Chosen Hotel

• In Greece accessibility in accommodations is a law but in our region accessible accommodations are limited so is the tourism for all

• Our project was an opportunity to inform the local community about accessibility and the benefits that they will have if they adopt accessible standards and practices

• This project apart from hotels, may be also implemented in other facilities such as ports, museums, restaurants etc.

• We work on the perspective that in the future Aegean islands may be an accessible tourist destination for All.

Thank you for your attention
