General DescriptionThe 2 kW Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)Research System uses several components from the 2 kW EMS product line. It is designed for customers that are interested in further experimentation with the doubly-fed induction generators used in wind turbines. It includes the Four-Quadrant Dynamometer, Model 8540, which can be interfaced easily with a computer in order to emulate the wind blowing on a wind turbine rotor. The generator included in the training system is a variation of the existing Wound-Rotor Induction Generator whose rotor voltage is three times higher than its stator voltage. The system also includes two IGBT Chopper/Inverter modules, Model 8857-1, that can convert power in both directions in conjunctions to a Line Inductors, Model 8374-A. Finally, a Three-Phase Power Supply, Model 8525-2, is used for connection to a standard three-phase network.

The system DOES NOT include the DFIG controller, which must be provided by the user. The 2 kW DFIG Training System is exclusively a hardware solution.

The 2 kW DFIG Training System has already been integrated with success into OPAL-RT’s OP5600/8660 Real-Time HIL Controller and Data Acquisition System. Contact OPAL-RT at www.opal-rt.com/2kw-doubly-fed-induction-generator-kit for more information about their control solution.

Resistive Load 763359 (8311-00)

The Resistive Load consists of a module housing nine wire-wound power resistors arranged in three identical banks. Each bank consists of three resistors connected in parallel that can be switched on or off with toggle switches to obtain various resistance values. This allows the total (equivalent) resistance of each bank to be increased or decreased by steps. Six safety banana jacks on the module front panel provide access to each resistor bank. The three resistor banks can be connected separately for operation in three-phase circuits. Also, the three resistor banks can be connected together for operation in single-phase circuits.

The Resistive Load is commonly used in conjunction with other basic load modules, like the Inductive Load and the Capacitive Load to experiment with the effects of different types of load on a circuit.

Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor, 2 kW 586582 (8505-A0)

The Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor consists of a 4-pole machine rated at 2 kW. Each phase of the stator winding is accessible via the connection module to allow wye or delta connections. The rotor is wye connected to four slip rings to give access to all windings, including neutral.

The winding dimensions permit the study of operation as a wound-rotor induction motor, a frequency converter, a phase-shifter, a position controller, a variable-coupling single-phase transformer, a three-phase transformer, and an asynchronous induction generator. This module is a special version of Model 8505 which can be used to implement a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator.

The machine also has three search coils permitting observation of the flux distribution at one pole of the stator, at one tooth, and at the full-pitch of the rotor.

Wiring Module for Wound-Rotor Induction Motor (DFIG) 586592 (8506-A0)

The Wiring Module for Wound-Rotor Induction Motor consists of a connection module. It provides connection access to the Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor from the workstation through a flexible connecting cable. The module has ten 4-mm color-coded safety jacks for the power windings and six 2-mm jacks for the search coils. Jacks of different sizes prevent accidental connections between power windings and search coils.

Variable Power Supply 586712 (8525-20)

The Power Supply module is the primary component of the system. All associated equipment is powered by this power supply. A flexible, 5-wire power cord, terminated with a 5-prong, twist-lock plug and line cap, feeds the module. A mechanical interlock on the line cap prevents the removal of an energized Power Supply from its locked position in the workstation. The Power Supply requires a 3-phase, wye-connected, 5-wire service installation including ground and neutral.

The Power Supply provides fixed and variable ac and dc voltage sources all terminated with 4 mm safety jacks. They can be used simultaneously, up to a total load current equal to the rating of the fixed 3-phase output. Independent circuit breakers, reset at the front panel, protect the Power Supply input and outputs.

Indicator lamps monitor the presence of input voltage in each phase. When a phase leg of the site power service is out, the lamp goes off to reflect this condition. A voltmeter, connected through a selector switch, monitors the outputs.

The Variable Power Supply is available in different variants depending on ac power network voltages and frequencies. Because of this, the actual module may vary from the one shown in the picture.

Four-Quadrant Dynamometer 586731 (8540-00)

The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer is a model which can be integrated to the 2 kW Electromechanical Training System, Model 8013. This model can act as a prime mover or as a dynamometer, depending on user preference, and it can easily be coupled to any motor and generator from the 2 kW product line.

The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer consists of a squirrel-cage induction motor with an encoder feedback. The motor is driven by a closed-loop vector drive which is coupled to a touch-screen Human-Machine Interface (HMI). This interface enables the user to select the mode of operation (speed or torque) and to set either the speed (r/min) and direction or the output torque (N·m or lb·ft) of the machine. The interface displays the main parameters of operation in real-time (voltage, current, torque, speed, and frequency).

Electrical connections between the vector drive and the motor are made through jumpers on the front panel. This makes the separation of both components simple and allows the motor or the vector drive to be used independently in other experimentations. The vector drive is well protected against abuse.

The vector drive stops if a problem occurs, with the LCD showing the current alarm along with its description. The user is then able to reset the alarm and resume normal operation. The model can also be interfaced with a computer for monitoring and control.

IGBT Chopper/Inverter 586829 (8857-10)

The IGBT Chopper/Inverter is one of the Power Electronics Devices that can be added to the 2 kW Electromechanical Training System to allow training in power electronics. The Power Electronics Devices are used to filter and convert electrical power flowing in electric circuits. They come as half-size EMS modules equipped with a steel front panel. Internal electrical components are identified on the module front panel by silkscreened symbols.

This module consists of 7 insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) mounted in a half-size EMS module. Six IGBTs are used to implement choppers and inverters. These IGBTs are protected against a variety of severe operating conditions, such as short-circuits, overvoltage, overcurrent, and overheat. The seventh IGBT and an external dumping resistor allow smooth dissipation of excess energy at the DC bus. The dumping circuit can be activated through the use of a toggle switch on the front panel. The module switching control section allows 0/5 V pulse signals from either the Data Acquisition and Control Interface, Model 9063, the Chopper/Inverter Control Unit, Model 9029, or any compatible 0/5 V control unit, to be applied to the gating circuits of the IGBTs. The signals are input in the IGBT Chopper/Inverter module through a 9 pin connector. Six miniature banana jacks are used as test points to monitor the pulse signals using an oscilloscope.

These jacks can also be used to inject 0/5 V pulse signals from an alternate control unit, as well as to inhibit each gating circuit. The IGBT Chopper/Inverter module also includes a synchronization output to trigger an oscilloscope when observing the switching control signals as well as a switching control disable input that allows all six IGBTs in the chopper/inverter section to be switched off.

The Inductive Load consists of a module housing nine iron-core power inductors arranged in three identical banks. Each bank consists of three inductors connected in parallel that can be switched on or off with toggle switches to obtain various inductance values. This allows the equivalent inductance of each bank to be increased or decreased by steps. Six safety banana jacks on the module front panel provide access to each inductor bank. The three inductor banks can be connected separately for operation in three-phase circuits. Also, the three inductor banks can be connected together for operation in single-phase circuits.

The Inductive Load is commonly used in conjunction with other basic load modules, like the Resistive Load and the Capacitive Load to experiment with the effects of different types of load on a circuit.

Current/Voltage Isolator (Optional) 587045 (9056-B0)

The Current/Voltage Isolator is a power electronics device that converts a high-level current and a high-level voltage (ac or dc) into two low-level (0 to ±10 V) output signals, electrically isolated from the high-level signal source. This allows observation of the signal waveforms in power circuits using a conventional oscilloscope. The output signals can also be used in control circuits as current or voltage feedback signals.

The isolated signal at the current output (I) is proportional to the input current. Similarly, the isolated signal at the voltage output (E) is proportional to the input voltage. Both isolators can be used simultaneously.

This plug-in module is designed to be inserted into the Enclosure / Power Supply, Model 8840. It is automatically powered when it is inserted into the enclosure.
