    Hazard CommunicationTraining

Become familiar with OSHA Hazard Communicationstandard (29 CFR 1910.1200)

Become informed about the potential hazards associatedwith the chemicals used in the workplace

Learn to locate and use Material Safety Data Sheets

Learn to recognize and use hazard warning labels

Learn to select the proper control methods/protectiveequipment (gloves, ventilation, goggles) when using chemicals

Hazard Communication refers to the OccupationalSafety and Health Administrations (OSHA) regulation

1910.1200, which states employees have a need andright to know the hazards and identities of thechemicals they are exposed to in the workplace

Let Employers & Employees Know about WorkHazards & How to Protect Themselves

To insure that employees are aware of the workplacehazards

To insure that employees can take the proper steps toreduce exposure and potential for chemical injuries

    To establish proper work practices

The standard mandates information on all chemicalsand their hazardous components present in theworkplace be prepared and made available to the

    employees who work with them

    Manufacturers

    Importers/Distributors

    Employers

    Employees

Must determine and evaluate the hazards ofchemicals they manufacture

Must prepare labels for chemical containersindicating the hazards

Must develop Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)for chemicals they produce (note: no standard MSDSformat exists)

Must provide appropriate labels and MSDSs forthose to whom they ship their chemicals

Information must be providedautomaticallymeaning the employer should not haveto request an MSDS

All containers must be labeled, tagged, or markedwith required information

Must send a properly completed MSDS with the firstshipment of a chemical

Must insure that the health and safety informationrelated to hazardous chemicals in the workplace ismade readily available to the employee (user)

Must insure that an MSDS for every chemical hazardis present in the workplace and is readily available foremployees to review during all work shifts

    Establish a workplace Hazard Communicationprogram

Must become familiar with the hazards of the chemicalsused in the workplacereview MSDSs

Must read and follow chemical use instruction and MSDSinstructions

    Must use chemicals responsibly

Must warn others of the hazards of chemicals in use

The hazardous nature of the product determineswhether or not it is covered the standardbut keep inmind that excessive exposure to or misuse of a seeminglynon-hazardous chemical can be dangerous!!!

If the chemical is not inherently hazardous it is notcovered but even a non-hazardous chemical can have anMSDS

You must review the products MSDS for a listing ofhazardous ingredients

Survey the workplace and identify all potentialchemical hazards

Read the labels provided regarding hazardinformation and determine safe use of the product

The MSDS should be reviewed for every chemical todetermine if its use/misuse may be hazardous

An MSDS is a document that provides detailedinformation on each hazardous chemical, including itspotential health effects, its physical and chemicalcharacteristics, and recommendations for appropriateprotective equipment

Created by the and shouldaccompany every chemical shipped

    1. Name of Chemical (Chemical Identity)2. Emergency phone numbers

    3. Hazardous Ingredients (present in 1% or greater)4. Physical and Chemical Characteristics5. Fire Safety Information6. Health effects of the chemical7. Emergency and First Aid Procedures8. Spill and Waste disposal procedures9. Personal Protection recommendations10. Shipping Information

All containers must be labeled, tagged, or markedwith the identity of the material and the appropriatehazard warning (i.e. flammable or causes lung damage)

A container can come in many formsbag, barrel, bottle, box, can, cylinder, drum, storage tank, oranything that contains a hazardous chemical

If a chemical is transferred from its originalcontainer to another container, the new container mustbe labeled appropriately

Labels must be legible and prominently displayed

    Irritants

    Corrosives

    Asphyxiates

    Reproductive Hazards

    Carcinogens

    Flammables and Explosives

Sensitizers- Substances do not cause harm initially, but the body can develop a hypersensitive reaction andexposure to the product in the future may causeallergic reactions

Irritants- Cause immediate reddening orinflammatory response of exposed areas uponcontactusually affect the eyes, nose, and throat

Corrosives- Cause instant pain and burning anddestruction to human skin at site of contact

Asphyxiants- Interfere with the bodys ability to use

oxygencauses suffocation due to lack of oxygen

Reproductive Hazards- Substances that damagereproductive system and can affect the fetus

    Substitution

    Ventilation

    Good Housekeeping

    Personal Hygiene

    Personal Protective Equipment

Substitution- Replace the hazardous chemical witha chemical or product that is not as toxic

Ventilation- Always use adequate ventilation whenusing hazardous chemicals

Good Housekeeping- Keep work area neat andorganized, this reduces the chances of spills and falls

Personal Hygiene- Always wash your hands afterusing hazardous chemicals because chemicals can beinadvertently ingested or absorbed

Personal Protective Equipment- Includes suchthings as respirators, gloves, safety glasses, chemicalprotective suits, etc.

Respirators- Used only when there is noother way to reduce exposure Used to protect respiratory system fromairborne hazards such as gases, dusts, mists, fibers, etc. Must use proper respirator for thecontaminant of concern All respirator selection and use should bemanaged by the EH&S officeNEVERchoose your own respirator withoutconsultation with EH&S

Gloves- Used to prevent absorption of chemicalsthrough skin.

Must select appropriate glove for the chemicals youare using

Safety Glasses- Used to protect eyes fromdamagetypically physical hazards

Safety goggles- Should be used whenever there is

    the potential for chemical splash
