From the office…
Happy Fall to everyone! Not only does November mark a time for Progress Reports
and interviews, it also marks the passage through the seasons, as we are reminded that
Daylight Savings time ends on November 4.
We are extremely proud of the Gledhill team of students who represented the school at
the TDSB Cross Country events this fall. These athletes are a very dedicated group of
students who are committed to weekly practices, training and a great deal of persever-
ance. They couldn’t do it without the support of their teachers and families. Thank
you everyone!! A special thank you to Ms. Smith for her commitment to this wonder-
ful group of students.
We invite and encourage your ongoing communication and participation. Please con-
tact your child’s/children’s teachers with any questions or concerns. The most effec-
tive schools are those where there are positive partnerships with parents. We look for-
ward to seeing everyone at our Parent Teacher Conferences which are planned for later
this month. Information will be sent home with your child/children.
Sincerely,
Cathy McAleese & Craig Budgell

Safety
It’s time to remind children about being safe in our community.
With Halloween finished and warm weather still around, it’s a good time for parents to continue to remind chil-
dren about personal safety.
Here's what children need to know:
• Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province. This can be done through rhyme or song.
• How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers.
• How and under what circumstances to call 911.
• To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle. A responsible adult would never ask a child for directions or
any other question for that matter.
• Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the adult is asking them to do
something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable. Reminding children of this right is important
because children are taught from a young age to respect adults.
• To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their
parent's permission.
• If home alone, never admit it when answering the phone. Never answer a knock at the door or
speak through it. Adults can be very persuasive. Teach your child to call you if there is a knock
at the door and if they fear for their safety, teach them to call 911. Make sure they know that
police officers are there to help them and would not get mad if it were a false alarm.
• If they think they are being followed or are in danger they should run home or to a public place. If someone
grabs them, they should try to get away, yelling and screaming while doing so.
• It is important to play in safe areas, never take shortcuts and stick with a buddy whenever possible.
It is never too early or too late to teach children the importance of personal safety. Common sense, communica-
tion and consistency are the keys. Remind children to alert a responsible adult if something strange happens that
makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's responsibility.
For more information on this subject, visit: http://torontopolice.on.ca/safetyzone/
Keeping our students safe is our top priority, but we need your help. Please do NOT park in designated bus
routes & drop off zones. Not only do you make it difficult for buses to park safely, but some drivers are parking
in a way that blocks other drivers from seeing students that may be crossing the street. So, please do NOT block
Gledhill Avenue and obey all parking signs. Find a LEGAL parking spot on one of the streets close to the
school and then safely walk your children to school.
Do NOT make U-turns in front of the school. Please take the time to drive along the road safely, until you come
to a natural turn in the road. It is difficult to see or anticipate the movements of children and other driv-
ers. Please help keep our students safe.
Valuable Items
Students are reminded that electronic items need to remain in their back packs (e.g., cell phones, iPods) until the
end of the day so as to ensure they are not used during school time, lost or confiscated. We also ask that trading
cards of any kind remain at home. Students who bring them can, at times, lose/misplace them or attempt to re-
enact scenes (at times violent) from the cards. These cards are also expensive and should be enjoyed at home.

Gledhill Eco-team GOAL : Eco-Schools Platinum Status! P.4
Dear Gledhill,
It's official, the Gledhill Eco-team has officially applied for Eco-School Platinum status! As a community,
Gledhill consistently demonstrates care and action to protect the environment in many, many ways and
we hope to showcase our work through-out the 2018/2019 school year to earn points for our final audit
coming up in April.
A huge thanks goes out to Erin Spencer, one of our dedicated parent council members and Laurie-Ann Rye,
one of our very professional school care-takers, both of whom were able to join Mme. Roshi and myself
(Mme Leclerc), at the Eco-schools Kick-Off Event, on Monday, October 29th. We had a chance to learn
about some "Wicked Problems" related to single-use plastics and hear a variety of ways different schools
and communities are tackling this issue, and about a number of other environmentally-minded projects, as
well as how Eco-schools award the various Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum status to schools.
We know there are lots of great things parents, teachers, staff and students are doing, so let's share and show
it off!
The Eco-Club for students will begin soon. Two to three students from each grade 2 to 5 will be se-
lected by a name draw to participate in the first Eco-club session starting Thursday, November 22nd and it
will continue until Thursday, February 28. Preference will be given to students who did not have a chance to
participate last year. A second session will be offered for other students from March 7th until late June.
Get-Caught Shopping with your Re-useable bags, Baskets or Box-
es PHOTO-CHALLENGE
The Eco-team has been excited to see and hear about the latest science explorations of Mme. Bey's grade
5 Science students. The grade 5 students have been investigating the use of plastics in our daily lives and
the effects of plastics on our environment. We know that plastics have revolutionized life in many positive
ways, but we are also realizing that much of our use of plastic is unnecessary and becomes unsightly and
extremely hazardous for animals, particularly in aquatic habitats.
Students created posters to communicate their learning with the goal of educating other students and staff at
Gledhill to consider the impacts of single-use plastics, particularly the plastic bag.
So.....to create awareness about this issue in alignment with World Fisheries Day celebrated each No-
vember 21st; We challenge all STAFF and PARENTS or STUDENTS to send a photo of your-
self using your RE-USEABLE Shopping bags when preparing to, returning from or in the midst of shop-
ping for groceries or other items. There will be a small draw prize for participants who enter before or by
November 19th.
Please e-mail your photo to Mme Leclerc at [email protected] by or before November
19th, 2018. Your photo will be added to our Eco-Club bulletin board during the month of November to
show our students how many people are taking action to protect fish and wildlife from plastic in
lakes, rivers and oceans.
Thanks for thinking of our amazing planet!
