Chairperson’s Message

Nancy Gessner, MCTVBoard Chairperson

Massillon WestStark Chamber of Commerce

Dear Chamber members,The beginning of the fall season always makes me feel a little nostalgic, but it is also agreat time to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re going. Let’s reflect a bit onyour Chamber. We’ve had a pretty exciting and interesting 2015 so far with a new name and logo, thesale of the building and the anticipation of a new home, a highly successful and well-attended Annual Dinner, increasing memberships, revitalized committees, invigoratedBCL lunches with remarkable speakers, and most of all, the Chamber’s 100th anniversary. It all sounds so wonderfully easy, but much hard work has gone into what has been avery successful year so far. Ted, Sue, and Jane make the task of running the Chamberand all of the various events look terribly easy, but believe me their attention to themembership is one of the things that makes our Chamber so special. The Board isactive and engaged and committed to doing what is best for the members. I can’t beginto imagine how the Chamber would function without all of the dedicated committeemembers and volunteers. Thanks to all of you!As we look forward to the end of the year and 2016, we have much to be excited about. Mark your calendars for a fun evening on October 22 as we celebrate theChamber’s 100th birthday. I’m sure that the Activities Committee will create a fun-filledevening for all of us, and sponsorships will be much appreciated. BEAC meetings commence again this month, and I’m sure that the committee has an educational andinformative year planned for the members. Contact Sue or Jane if you’d like to receiveemails about BEAC meetings. The Board is making organizational plans for 2016. We’llbegin the budget and nominating processes this month. It isn’t too early to start planningfor the 2016 Annual Dinner. Topping the 2015 Dinner will be difficult, but I’m sure theeveryone is up for the task. If you have any brilliant ideas for a dynamic speaker, please contact Ted.As always, please feel free to contact me at 330.833.4134 or [email protected] you’d like to chat about the Chamber. As we enter into fall, take some time to enjoyour glorious Indian Summer days in Ohio while eating a crisp apple right off the tree!

Boys & girls Clubs of Massillon Announces Investment from AT&T The Boys and Girls Club of Massillon (BGCM) has been selected by AT&T to receive a$15,000 contribution to implement their AT&T Be Great: Attend College Program to supportcollege readiness. The AT&T Be Great: Attend College Program will assist underserved students from western Stark County in grades nine through 12 to successfully complete high school and prepare for college.

The project will use proven best practices of mentoring and youth development to developProgram project outcomes. BGCM will focus on positive academic outcomes for youth byallowing staff to work in partnership with community partners such as teachers, coaches, and administrators to identify at-risk students who have attendance problems, behavioralissues, failing or near-failing GPAs, or warning signs of withdrawal from school. These at-risk youth are then paired with adult mentors from the BGCM and provided with access tointense mentoring. The focus of this program is to reduce non-academic barriers to successand link students with resources that will provide them with academic support, as needed.

Youth in disadvantaged economic or challenging family and social circumstances often lack the perspective that gainful employment can help provide the means to change theiroutlook and provide the hope they both desire and deserve. This opportunity builds onproven factors that enhance a youth’s chance of success and help him develop and obtain academic goals he needs to be successful. BGCM project is comprised of three components: mentor-youth relationship; personalized and flexible intervention; and enhancing club/school/home partnership and collaboration.

“This program helps in the education of Ohio’s future leaders,” said State Senator Scott Oelslager. “The work of the AT&T Be Great: Attend College Program is to be commended, as it keeps our youth on track to graduate high school and prepares them to succeed in college and the workforce.”

“Keeping our teenagers in high school and preparing them for success after graduation benefits our students and our communities,” said Steve Kristan, ExternalAffairs Director, AT&T Ohio. “The Boys and Girls Club of Massillon has a proven graduation strategy that is helping at-risk youth stay in school and succeed academically. We are proud to support this program.”

“The Boys and Girls Club of Massillon is thrilled to have AT&T support and allow us to advance our priority outcome of academic success and graduation by promoting college attendance and success for our local high school youth,” said Vincent Pedro, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Massillon.

AT&T, the world’s largest provider of pay TV, helps millions around the globe connect with leading entertainment, mobile, high speed internet, and voice services.

July 2015 RE: Group-Rating Safety Accountability

Dear Employer: Each year Ohio employers have the opportunity to participate in BWC’s Group-Experience-Rating Program or Group-Retrospective-Rating Program. While these programs are not required, they do provide you with an opportunity to significantly reduce your workers’ compensation premiums, while increasing your awareness of safety and risk-management strategies. Workplace safety is an important component of these programs. To succeed in accident prevention, we encourage you to use the many resources available to you. We believe a group-rating program is a partnership that includes you and your employees, your sponsoring organization or third-party administrator (TPA) and BWC. Each has specific roles and responsibilities, all designed to assist in preventing workplace accidents. This letter outlines the safety services expectations you should have as an employer enrolled in a group-rating program. The employer will:

Maintain a safe workplace; Attend safety training to enhance workplace safety; Use BWC’s safety services as needed; Fulfill the required two-hour training requirement and provide proof of attendance to sponsor for claim(s)

occurring within the last year. The certified primary and affiliated sponsoring organizations will:

Sponsor eight hours of safety training (this may be done at one time or may be provided incrementally as long as the total is at least eight hours);

Provide information regarding safety resources to group members; Possibly assist an employer in achieving its safety needs; Manage employer fulfillment of the two-hour training requirement, where applicable; Publish this letter to group members.

The TPA may:

Assist sponsoring organizations with fulfilling the group-rating safety requirements; Assist an employer with its safety needs; Work in conjunction with sponsors to develop safety training and deliver safety resources; Provide resources for claims handling.

BWC will:

Monitor all group-rating safety activities to confirm requirements are met; Remain in communication with sponsoring organizations to provide recommendations for fulfilling safety

requirements; Provide safety training through Ohio’s Center for Occupational Safety & Health; Offer on-site safety consultation (hazard assessments, air and noise monitoring, ergonomics evaluation, training)

by a BWC safety professional; Offer publications and videos for safety program support; Conduct employer visits to confirm the employer is meeting group-rating requirements, when appropriate.

The goal of this collaborative effort is to make sure all your safety needs are met. Using these resources will assist you in preventing accidents, reducing claims costs and achieving the highest discounts possible. Below you’ll find contact information for various resources.
