COMMEMORATION SERMON 1

H IS service of commemoration to which we now come,

and rightly come , as the beginning of this d ay of re

union and rejoicing , is at once a memor ial and a euchar ist ,a service of grateful remembrance and thoughtful thanks

g iving as before God and man.

There’

s rosemary, that’

s for remembrance ;pray, love, remember ; and there is pansies ,that’s for thoughts.

!

So the great master of Eng l ish speech has the gentl e

Ophel ia give pathetic utterance to a very d eep l ong ingof the human

“heart , perhaps the d eepest , the l onging forthoughtful and l oving remembrance ; and it is in gl ad re

sponse to the unut'

tered appeal of that l ong ing that we woul dnow , before al l el se in this d ay

s cel ebration , l i ft up con

sciously into our .mind s and hearts those of our comrad es

of yesterd ay who answer not to our cal l to-d ay , who walkhere these hal l s with us no more, that we may have fel lowship with them yet once again .

Aycock ; Cain ; Coates ; H al tom ; H ines ; Kil lough ; Li ll ard ; M anaker ; M arshal l ; M cGuire ; P atterson ; Reynol d s ;

Rud d ; South ; Stel l ; Wood .

These are they of the brotherhood who have fought thefight and kept the faith even unto d eath . Worthy sons of

the Mystic City , “where l oyal hearts and true stand ever

to them, and say“

:

Val iant Hearts , who to your glory cameThrough d ust .of confl ict and through battle flame ;

Greater l ove hath no man than this , t hat a man lay d own

!And no l i fe is so honorab l e or so

fruitful as such a d eath .

_With priority of honor and l oving remembrance thus

measure of honor to those who have not d ied but who

have nob ly l ived ,and sti l l l ive, who al so went forth as true

men to fight the fight and keep the faith , and who havereturned and are here with us to-

d ay in gl ad and thankfulreunion .

When we have thought the matter through , we. shal l see,I think, that the fact of d eath of the body anywhere or at

any time, whether away from home in d ays of. war'

or at

home in d ays of peace, -in every case is whol ly incid ental ,if not ind eed more or l ess accid ental ; and in no case d oesit of itsel f d etermine the real

of a man’

physmal resul ts of that act . For a man to g ive his l ifein high and holy d evotion to his country’

s cause , or to any

cause, i s an act of his wi l l . I t may involve the d eath of his

body , or it may not . I t d oes involve his wi l l ingness to d ie .

I t d emand s that he hol d not his l i fe d ear to himsel f . But

the value of his act .is in the inward d evotion of his l i fe and

the l oyal ty of service fol lowing that d evotion , and not in

the possib l e consequent d eath of his body as the resul t of

that d evotion and servi ce . Of two sol d iers who go out to

the battl e together sid e by sid e, one receives the shot in his

heart , - d ies , and is bur ied on the fiel d of honor beneathThe Wood en

N ever was truer wordspoken . But the real ity of that l ove and the greatness of

that l ove is in the wil l ingness to'

the quiet fiel d s. Wherever and however duty cal l ed , theyanswered with their l ives .

Let the nation al so thank God that it stil l breed s the

men who make l i fe great by service and sacrifice ; that time

and work and pl easure and’

weal th have not sapped the

sour ces of its inward strength ; that it stil l knows how to

d are and to d o al l in that hour when m anhood alone countsand achieves .

A s I have been thinking over what I have written and havejust spoken to you about these men from the Rice Institute ,and the other men of al l sorts and cond itions from al l overthis country, of what they went forth tod o and

'

what theyd id in compl ete sel f-aband onment, in a spirit so fine that itseemed not even to be conscious of itsel f as it went to itsterr ib l e task as a mere matter of course in the d ay

s duty ,

I have been l ed to try to take once more the measure of the

meaning of gratitud e, of a man’

s d ebt— every man’

s d ebtof gratitud e to his fel low-men and to God .

T he sp ir it of gratitud e is the finest virtue, the fairest andsweetest flower

,of personal character . I t requires

-

far more

refinement and d ignity of'

nature to receive consciously and

acknowl ed ge graceful ly and grateful ly a favor or a g i ft or aservice than it d oes to rend er the same to another . The

impul se of the crud e, unrestrained , und iscipl ined nature is

to stand back from and reject the thought of favor , of beingserved—to resent the sense of personal ob l igation . It woul d

prefer“

to think and to feel and to say of itsel f , I am in

d epend ent !!No l No human being in al l this worl d is or

ever was ind epend ent ; and the sense of ind epend ence isengend ered in men only by crass ignorance and sel fishnessand vulgar arrogance . A l l

stately soul s bow themselvesgraciously in gratitud e and thankfulness before both God

and their fel low-men . Gratitud e is. ever the authentic sign

of the true man , the true gentl eman, the highest type of

man . And why ! Because the one pl ainest fact of human

l i fe.

everywhere, of whatever rank or station, of whateversort or cond ition, i s the fact of God

s servi ce to man—a

service, l et us never forget , which we see rend ered , not only

and not chiefly in the beneficent arrangements of mater ial

nature, but more pl ainly and more emphatical ly and more

real ly in man’

s service to man . The d 1v1ne l S always servingand ministering to the human , we say ; yes , und oubted ly so ;

but i f that d ecl arationhas any cl ear and d efinite meaning

to us , it means‘

that this service is rend ered ever and at its

best through human agencies , through other men. The one

d iv1nest thing in the worl d that we know, i .e .

,the good , t

he

best, the highest , the noblest that is in man—the spiritual

image and l ikeness to God in whi ch he is mad e—is alwaysservmg his fel l ow-men .

“ And it is just in prop'

ortl on as we

become conscious of our fel low-men , just as we come real ly

to know them , and to know what they have d oneand are everd oing , that we come to .be possessed of the sp irit of gratitud e .

and thankfulness—of gratitud e and thankfulness fi rst to our

fel low-men and then quickly through them to God . I f weare not grateful , it is simply because we d o not know , we are

ignorant of both men and God ; and then we are but l ittl e,

if at al l , better than the beasts of the fiel d , for we have l ostthe humanness of human l i fe, and l osing that we have l ostconsciousness of al l d ivineness and g lory in any l i fe, and

l iving becomes only a beastly scrambl e and fight for mate

rial gain.

Commemorat ion Sermon 9

Our people have looked upon their own li fe with a d eeper com

prehension ; they have been qui ckened by a great moral stimulation ;they have had themsel ves reveal ed ' to themselves.

I t was two years and more before we went into the war

when he wrote that ; and if it was true then that “

we had

ourselves reveal ed to ourselves, ! it is a thousand times truer

to-d ay after having gone into the war . A nd i f we have

ever known , or if we are ever to know , one-another

'

in thiscountry , we know now . And what we know beyond al l

question and d oubt is this—that every el ement of the whol ecitizenship of our country , the highest and the l owest , theri ch and the poor , the l earned and the ignorant , the strong

and the weak , the high and the lowly, money-man and working-man, white man and red man and bl ack man—al l of

them—have gone in theperson of their sons to strive and

to d are and to d o even to the mouth of d eath and of hel lfor the protection of their country .

l

And to-d ay al l of our

l iberties , our institutions , our prosper ity , our property, ourhomes , our very l i fe, al l that we have and al l that we are,

we owe absolutely to the service and sacrifice of these braveand true sons of

_

al l these various el ements of our citizenship .

There is the measure of the d ebt of gratitud e resting

upon us here in Amer i ca ; A ND THERE ARE THEY TO WHOMWE OWE IT. We may not in any rel ationship ever over lookor forget those men who fought the b itter fight for us and

who won the V i ctory whose fruits we now enjoy and shal lcontinue to enjoy through the years to come . These “

othershave l abored , and we have entered into the fruits of theirl aborf

TO what final thought d oes al l this l ead us ! We, the peopl e

here in these U nited States , al l of us al ike,are bound to

A lmighty God into one l iving bo‘

fami ly , in which every member and al l the members serveand are d epend ent upon every other and al l the other mem

bers . The farthest d istance between any two el ements of

our citizenship is the d istance between two'

ind ividual mem

bers of the same family , or the d istance of your head from

your foot in your l iving body . And no one member of suchcorporate l i fe, in governmental or industr ial or economic orother rel ationship , can for a moment forget or overlook any

other member without being guil ty of treachery to the bod y ;and treachery in any organi c rel ationship is a cap ital offense.

I f , therefore, we are'

ind eed thus mutual ly d epend ent uponone another , members one of another , bound t ogether inevery d irection i n interd epend ent rel ationship , merged into

a common l i fe , then, i f one member suffers , al l the otherssuffer with it ; i f one -is

“honored , al l the others re101ce withit ; and it is not possibl e for any one el ement of our citizenship to go forward except as the whol e goes forward to

gether .

I make my earnest pl ea to—d ay that we strive to real ize'

more and more- the unity Of our common l i fe in America

in an ever-growing sense of gratitud e one to another as we

see and recognize the mutual servi ce we are rend ering one

to another .
