Lil Levant directs the business operations of one of
the largest student-run media groups in the country,
including The Daily Illini, WPGU-FM, the Illio
yearbook, Buzz magazine, Technograph and new
media enterprises. She reports to the Illini Media
Board of Directors.
Lil's an experienced and highly respected
professional who has worked in leadership positions
ranging from for-profit media sales and
management to non-profit fundraising and
development. Lil received her BS in Journalism
from the University of Missouri. Further, she brings
state-of-the-art knowledge of new media and
community informatics as a student in the
University of Illinois' Graduate School in Library &
Information Science, where she will earn her MLIS
degree in 2012.
A native of Chicago, Lil recently served in develop-
ment positions at the Golden Apple Foundation and
the Environmental Law and Policy Center. She
spent many successful years as sales director at the
Chicago Reader, account executive with public TV
stations WTTW (Chicago) and KCET (L.A.) and
was a regional sales manager for the L.A. Times.

The Illini Media Company, a non-profit corporation
chartered by the State of Illinois in 1911, has been the
heart of communication for students at the University of
Illinois for 90 years. Operating The Daily Illini, WPGU-
FM, the Illio yearbook and the Technograph engineering
magazine, the Illini Media Company offers students a
wide range of opportunities working in media, and offers
student groups and local businesses some great ways to
get their message heard.
Originally named the Illini Publishing Group, the Illini
Media Company was chartered on May 11, 1911 by the
State of Illinois as a non-profit corporation to organize and
operate student media at the University of Illinois.
Directed by a student and faculty board, IPC was one of
the first collegiate publishing companies to practice
successfully. It soon became a model of organization for
media groups at other colleges and universities. Over the
years, the IPC produced such publications as The Daily
Illini, Illio, The Illinois Magazine, The Siren, Illinois
Technograph Engineering Magazine, The Illinois
Agriculturalist, The Entrepreneur, The Architectural
Yearbook and The ROTC Journal. All of these, with the
exception of Illio, were produced in the basement of Illini
Hall. The presses, as well as the editorial and business
offices, were located in Illini Hall, 620 E. John St., in the
heart of Campustown. The company remained at this site
until 1988.
The Daily Illini, commonly known as
the DI, is an independent, student-run
newspaper that has been published for
the community of the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since
1871. Weekday circulation during fall
and spring semesters is 20,000; copies
are distributed free at more than 250
locations throughout the Community.
The paper is published by Illini Media
Company, a not-for-profit corporation
which also prints other U of I
publications, and also and operates
WPGU 107.1 FM, a student-run radio
station. While the IMC has no official
ties to the university, university
professors and others in the academic
community serve on its board of
directors. The newspaper's staff has
both full-time professionals and
amateur students.
The paper is printed as a broadsheet,
but downsizes during the summer
months as a tabloid.
The Daily Illini's history is replete
with staffers who have gone on to
prominent careers in journalism.
However, in recent years, the quality of
some of the paper's work has caused it
to become embroiled in controversy.
The editorial, business and production
departments are staffed by students
who are enrolled in a wide variety of
degree programs, not just journalism.
Several full-time professionals,
including the newspaper's publisher
and the advertising and circulation
managers, are employees of IMC.
Students also are paid for their jobs
in reporting, editing, production and
advertising.

I found these photos of
Aomori, Japan and
London, England. Aomori
on, the left, currently has
17 feet of snow on the
ground which is not that
unusual for this time of
the year. Below we have
London on a "balmy"
February day. Apparently
it was a great day for a
little sunbathing.

After several years battling to keep their doors open, the
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Police Train-

law enforcement training and education. An act of the Illinois Legislature's 69th General
Assembly in 1955, PTI was created for the purpose of training police officers in the
State in the methods of maintaining police services at a level consistent with the needs of
the community. I look forward to hearing about the Institute.

Today Tom Williams, Sr. will show photos and talk
about the horrendous fire that took place on Saturday,
March 25, 1911 in New York City. A fire broke out on
the top floors of the Arch Building in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory
and within minutes there were 146 dead young workers. This fire would
change the garment industry and manufacturing in the United States for-
ever. In 1911 the manufacturing facilities, especially in the garment
industry in United States, were about where China and the other far
eastern countries are today as far as worker safety and workers rights.

I should report that I am now almost 100%
recovered from my spine surgery last June.
I have no pain or numbness in my right hand or
arm. The pain in my neck is much better too.
I've also recovered nicely from the blood vessel
that burst in my right eye on the day of our club
Christmas Party causing me to barely be able to
see for several weeks. The floaters are 90+%
gone and I'm going to start driving again. It's
been over nine weeks since I've driven.
Green Box Attendance
Drawing - $65.00
With the attendance drawing up to a record
$65.00 to the winner if he or she is present next
Monday to hear Lil Levant of the Illini Media
Company, I believe we should have just about
everyone present if for no other reason than a
chance to win the $65.00 jackpot. I know the
weather this time of year doesn't help our
attendance. If we don't have a winner soon we'll
need to put Frank Scantlelbury's name back in
the Green Box. We can't hold off much longer.
Merle Dunn remains in the Champaign-
Urbana Rehab Center. He was moved into
Hospice where they can give him better care.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Merle and
Lois at this difficult time.
Don Kruse has now taken up residence in the
MeadowBrook Health Center at the Clark-
Lindsey on West Windsor Road in Urbana.
Jan Bahr says Don has a nice big room and
he's doing a little better. He needs to regain his
appetite and continue with his therapy so he
will get well enough to return to his home.
Mary Hannagan seems to be making a nice
recovery from her fall several weeks ago. The
seven stitches have healed and she's up and
about and probably showing homes to pro-
spective buyers if they can dig them out of the
snow long enough to show them.
Anne Johnston reports she's really glad that
Valentine's Day is over. She's been having a
difficult time with her legs. She says that they
don't want to cooperate. Anne does say that
she'll be back at our meetings as soon as the
weather improves.
Wally Lehman had a health scare ten days
ago when he had an Esophageal Spasm but
he's recovering nicely. For most people it's
scarier than it's dangerous. Hopefully that holds
true for Wally too.
Frank Scantlebury called Friday with the
news the cauterizing surgery he had two weeks
ago seems to be holding - great news. He
continues to take the oxygen treatments at the
Covenant Hospital five mornings a week from
8:00-10:00 AM. I don't know anyone tougher
than Frank (you have to be if you're a life-long
Cubs fan) and he says he will be at the next
Exchange Club meeting. He sets a great
example for all of us. Things won't be normal
at our luncheons until we have Kruse in the
first chair and Scantlebury sitting next to him.
Mondays without them aren't as much fun!

Dear Thomas and friends at Exchange Clubs of C-U,
Thank you so much for coordinating your event to benefit the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Your event raised
a total of $1,340.00, which we received on 12/19/2013. The gift will help us provide 8,040 meals for local
individuals and families!
When you support the Foodbank, you support agencies all over eastern Illinois, struggling to feed over
100,000 different people each year. People like Connie, a former nurse who lost her eyesight---and then her
job. Connie finds help at a food pantry in Champaign, where she finds enough groceries to help stretch her
meager monthly budget and keep food on the table. I invite you to read Connie's full story by visiting our
website at eifoodbank.org and click on "The Challenge". Together, we're helping people like Connie find
help and hope.
