ABOVE AND BEYONDIf there is one text that best represents 2017 it would

have to be Ephesians 3:20-21a, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus.”

It would be easy to go on and on about the “immeasurably more” portion of this verse and how it applies to God’s favor and the growth at MCHAP. I would also love to expand on “glory in the church” and how we are developing partnerships with five evangelical denominations (over 22,000 churches) to find godly A+ chaplains to meet the 2017 expansion of serving 20,000 more employees.

However, this biblical text is far deeper and richer. The best portion of this verse is, “… to him who is able to do … according to his power that is at work within us…” We have experienced what God has done, above and beyond what we could ever have planned or dreamed. God is granting his power from the throne of grace. In that place of prayer we find our staff and chaplains every day! We pray. God answers. We pray, again, and God continues to answer. His answers to prayer have been powerful! That is what makes the best year ever. An amazing year? We would rather say, “An AMAZING God.”

We love our staff and chaplains. We love each board member. We love our donors and those who pray for us. So, join us as we give God thanks. Then, as you read through this report, pray like never before.

AN EMPLOYEE’S STORYYou are My Last Hope by Unanimous Company Employee

As I was leaving work at a processing plant one night, I had all kinds of thoughts running through my mind and was feeling totally hopeless. I was even entertaining the thought of ending my life that night.

That’s when I saw it! I saw the poster with the chaplains’ phone numbers on it and decided to call one of the chaplains. It was the middle of the night. Through my tears I stammered, “Are you the chaplain?” The reassuring voice on the other end replied, “Yes.” I blurted out, “You are my last hope!”

The chaplain graciously gave me her time as I poured out all of my frustrations and fears. I was behind on my bills, the man in my life had left, one of my children was failing in school, my mother was desperately ill, and my list went on. My life had become more than I could handle.

The chaplain patiently listened and began pointing me to several practical things that could help, as well as referred me to some agencies that provide the support and assistance I needed. The chaplain continued to walk with me in the days that followed. I am so very grateful the chaplain picked up the phone that night when I called out of my desperation. My life is so totally different from that hopeless night.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE GOVERNING BOARD by Will Thomas, Governing Board Chairman

‘Work and the Loneliness Epidemic’, a recent article written by the 19th Surgeon General of the United States, explains loneliness rates have doubled nationwide since the 1980s, Marketplace Chaplains’ founding decade.

Additionally, fewer people report having a close confidante in their lives. Scientists also recently reported increased social media use ironically corresponds with greater isolation, adding that loneliness is associated with greater reductions in lifespan than obesity.

Since Marketplace Chaplains began serving employees, those in the workplace have not only become more isolated from others, but also from God. According to Gallup polling, in 1984 only 8% of US employees had no religion; in 2017 20% indicated they had no religion. Those who follow the God of the Bible have also declined 18% in the same time period.

‘What do these troubling trends of social and spiritual isolation indicate for Chaplains entering workplaces every nine minutes around the clock to encourage employees?

These trends highlight that now, more than ever, chaplains are needed as confidantes and highly relational ambassadors of Jesus’ reconciling love and message to today’s isolated workforce. Through their deeds and words, Chaplains manifest community with others and communion with God that Jesus made known and possible. God is at work in and through Chaplains, as evidenced by countless anecdotes and the figures in this report.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE FOUNDATION BOARD by Mark Lovvorn, Foundation Board Chairman

As the Marketplace Ministries Foundation celebrated its 20th year in 2017, following 19 years of exemplary leadership by Gil Stricklin, the Lord continued to bless in abundant and remarkable ways. Combined revenue from

investment performance and new contributions totaled $1,531,506. Of this amount, total revenue from investment performance was

$1,238,031, with an overall return on investment of 11.14%, allowing the Foundation to distribute funds for grants, scholarships and ministry expenses. Generous donors contributed an additional $293,475 to endowments, and total assets at the end of 2017 increased to $11.28 million.

The directors of the Foundation serve with a laser focus: To carefully steward the financial resources of the Foundation with disciplined, professional endowment management so funds may be used for the work of ministry, both today and in the years to come. Each Foundation director acknowledges this fiduciary responsibility as a sacred trust and unique call to serve the Lord through diligent investment oversight.

Although the Foundation Board serves as a steward and advisor to the Governing Board for endowment investment management, it yields to the Governing Board’s careful determination of where endowment distributions are best directed.

This tandem relationship of cooperation is a beautiful picture of the different gifts and functions within the body of Christ for the work of ministry. (1 Corinthians 12: 12-31)

Our board’s prayer is that the growing resources of the Foundation will be greatly used to minister in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for generations to come.

DON’T GIVE UP! by Lynn Presson, Chaplain

An employee requested a visit to her 27-year-old son in the hospital. I was able to see him several times, building a friendship with him and a deeper one with his mother. I continued to plant Gospel seeds each time, as well as write them notes of prayer and care.

After the son was released, I continued to check on him through the mom when I made my visits at her company. He was readmitted to the hospital, and this time it was more serious. He was in danger of his lungs collapsing. He was quite discouraged that his medical team was unable to determine the cause.

Over the ensuing weeks, he was in the hospital numerous times. The doctors informed him he may have lung cancer. He told me how scared he was, so I shared how, even in dark times, I have hope in the Lord. I left him with an Easter basket full of things to remind him of the Chaplain Team’s love and prayers for him and of God’s love for him. My note told him that Easter is coming, and it’s such a great reminder that new life is coming, which, in turn, reminds me that Jesus rose from the grave conquering death and hell. I also left him a New Testament and another booklet.

I then contacted one of our male chaplains, who went to see him and was given permission to share the entire Gospel plan. The young man cried out to God for salvation! This is why we do what we do! This young man had no hope and was afraid to die. And now, he is truly living!

Jason Brown, Chief Marketing Officer It was not a typical marketing trip to the West Coast.

One day was filled with 9 pre-set appointments to visit CEOs and Company Leaders to explain the benefits of having a Chaplain Care Team. One meeting went long, and after being stuck in LA traffic, there was only about 10 minutes left to meet with this prospective manufacturing company. Leaving the meeting, our team thought there was no way they would sign up. However, the next day, the CEO called and said, “We have decided to use Marketplace!”

A few weeks later, an employee was tragically killed on the job. The Chaplain Care Team members responded to the company location, the hospital, the family’s home and all the way through to the funeral and grief process. Hearing of the tragedy, the employee’s family members gathered around the home. The Chaplains were there to provide care, concern and compassion. At one point, a family member asked for prayer. Everyone stood and held hands as the Chaplain began to pray. The Holy Spirit was there, the Chaplain shared the Gospel and 17 people asked our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into their hearts. The CEO, several months later said, “Our Marketplace Chaplains helped turn my worst day at work into one of my best days!”

RUNNING TRUE TO THE CORE by Curtis Parker

When we launched into January, we had no idea what 2017 had in store. We had just concluded 2016, where we saw the operational structure of our organization completely transform. We were looking forward to seeing this new model in action in the new year. For me, it was all about alignment with our Core Values. People – The whole purpose of Marketplace Chaplains is to share God’s love with people. The stories of chaplains responding immediately in those crisis moments were ever more evident in 2017. Our growth has allowed us the opportunity to reach new families in new cities across America, with a compassion that is truly remarkable.

Transformation – With a renewed emphasis on Evangelism in our team meetings in 2017, we saw hundreds of employees come to know Christ, and our teams energized with the celebrations of their contributions.

Marketplace - We have taken an even deeper focus on Customer Care in 2017 with the evolution of how we connect with company leaders. Our reporting of chaplain activity, the emphasis from the NCC on Customer Experience, and the many new tools at our disposal have made a significant impact on the retention and perceived value of our company leaders.

Empowerment – Under the new model, we have all seen the depth of relationships that are built on an ongoing culture of trust. As an EDO, I find my confidence in my role and my team has grown significantly.

Celebrate These Missional Steps Achieved in 2017:

Days of Prayer The staff observed two separate days of prayer this past year. This new discipline will be a regular part of our annual calendar.

Praise As we prayed, God granted contracts adding 20,000 employees and 137 companies to our care. Nearly 300 chaplains were recruited to meet the ongoing needs of sharing God’s love in the workplace.

International Strategy From time to time, we are invited by current companies we serve to help recruit and train chaplains where they have employees in other nations. Our Governing Board has established a fund for this effort. In 2018, we hope to inaugurate this new process in the Philippines.

Asbury Seminary initiated a Master of Arts in Chaplain Care. We currently have five chaplains in this pilot program, raising the standard of the highest level of competency for a chaplain.

Chaplain Team Meetings increased from 40% to 96% in 2017. Chaplains have responded with gratitude for these meetings with their division leaders, which equip them for even better service to employees.

Academy Our chaplain training Academy created a new video studio. Videos are made every week to enhance the ongoing training of our chaplains and leaders, which equip them for even better service to employees.

Self-Sustaining For the first time: Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Scotland and our rapid-response with a Class A Railroad, all became self-sustaining entities in 2017. Both Canada and Mexico continue to add new companies every year.

Leadership With the gift of growth from God, we added three new Executive Directors of Expansion(EDEs) who connect us with new companies. Also, new Executive Directors of Operations(EDOs) have been recruited and trained.

Giving The spirit of generosity was contagious as our staff and donors came together to provide over $72,000 for victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Plus, our staff gave a service day to the North Dallas Food Bank, packing meals for the underserved in our community. The staff responded, “Let’s do this again.”

MPACT StoryLine captured hearts and responses of readers with stories from our chaplains. This new popular book represents not only what we do, but who we are. The stories of God’s amazing grace are true and answer the question, “Why do we do what we do?” (Watch for future editions.)

CABINET REFLECTIONSOur Cabinet represent six strategic operational offices, comprising

the organizational leadership of Marketplace Chaplains. They are godly people through which God’s spirit is working. While we celebrate all of our chaplains and staff, the following leaders provide oversight, support and direction to our vision, called the 1% Solution, seeking to reach 1% of the North American workforce in God’s time. As you read, pray for our team of leaders dedicated to the good news of Jesus Christ.

2017 was a busy year. It was the first full year of the lower-overhead operations model. We birthed new divisions in Southern California, Ohio/Kentucky, and West Texas. We brought two Executive Vice Presidents into the Plano office, and completed the build-out of the Power BI reports. In 2018, my focus will be to provide relative statistics, data and trends to leadership so they can make informed decisions and to supply timely comments concerning Cabinet decisions.

God is rewarding the faithfulness of our Marketing Team, daily planting leads and watering prospects in the harvest field. We leave the increase and the glory for the Lord. Larger companies are proactively seeking our services as employees, who seem more connected than ever, are in fact very lonely and need a confidential, empathetic, listening ear and someone who can provide real help and hope for today’s mounting pressures and complexities.

Last year we were blessed with an expansion pilot project in Alberta to serve a large grocery chain, with the potential to serve their entire company across Canada. This year we plan to translate our basic skills chaplain training course into Spanish, including video enhancement, for use with our growing service in Mexico and to assist training with our bilingual chaplains here in the U.S.

God continues to bless and guide our HR modernization efforts implemented in 2017. As the forming stage evolves into the norming stage, we continue to evaluate, review, and align the processes to ensure we adhere to our Mission, Articles of Faith and Standards of Conduct, all

the while making the application/onboarding and orientation stages clear and simple. Our primary goal is to hire, equip and retain the servant leaders the Lord calls to Marketplace Chaplains.

I’m excited to announce the hire of our new IT Developer. In the coming year, together we

will be looking at each of the five technologies of our Digital Care Platform, continuing to save our Chaplains time, connect Company leaders with clear reporting, and help our Executive Director of Expansion’s more efficiently manage their divisions.
