Maywood Academy

High School

starT he phrase “inner city school” doesn’t usually con-

jure up images of green space, open windows and high attendance rates. But in September 2006,

the 9th to 12th graders at Maywood Academy High School in downtown Los Angeles not only began their school term in a new school, they attended a new kind of school. Maywood Academy is a showcase “green” school in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). In the months since it opened, it has made the case that, aside from reducing environmental impact, sustainable design can dramatically improve a school’s learning en-vironment – and even its attendance rates.

“It was a huge team effort to make Maywood a High Performance Showcase school,” says Ying Wang, pro-gram manager for energy and CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) for the LAUSD. “ere were tremendous in-house efforts to push the sustain-able agenda through on this school,” she says, “from selecting architects willing to go through the learning curve to meet sustainability standards at no extra cost to us, to working with Southern California Edison and the Public Utilities Commission on energy issues, to all the various stakeholders participating in the design and building processes.

“e collaboration and team effort is major in a showcase school creation,” she says. “For example, Sav-ings-by-Design, a statewide program administered by California’s four investor-owned utilities that encour-

The possibility that human activities could change Earth’s climate, with di-sastrous social and economic conse-

quences, has emerged as the greatest chal-lenge of this new century.

Under the leadership of Governor Schwar-zenegger, California is setting the pace for our nation’s response to this challenge.

Unlike those who suggest that serious at-tempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will hurt the economy, the Governor sees a new “Gold Rush” for the state – an unprec-

edented opportunity to build a vital new economy based on products and services that can meet the needs of society without endangering its future.

Our investment community agrees, and its visionaries have declared that “green tech-nology” – from clean, renewable energy to new approaches to the design of our homes, offices and communities – will power the 21st century economy.

It is likely that the majority of those whose help we need to accomplish this transfor-

mation are unaware of the events unfolding around them – or their tremendous poten-tial to make a difference in the lives of mil-lions. ese individuals are the students in California’s schools, the essential building blocks of our new “green workforce.”

Rarely in our history has it been more im-portant for our schools to operate, and to edu-cate, with real awareness of society’s needs. We are in a transitional period that will end with an economy, a workplace and a culture that are very different from what has come before.

Increasingly, building codes and standards are addressing sustainability – from energy and water use to building materials, siting and construction waste.

Green Technology magazine has covered the development and implementation of CALGreen, the nation’s first mandatory state-wide green building code, and delivered training on the code’s requirements to more than 5,000 building professionals.

Working with the International Code Council, editorial staff are expanding this coverage to include the evolution of the International Green Construction Code as well as changes in codes that relate to energy, water, and other building issues.
