Weekly Home Fun for the Week of 6/12/2017
Reading Unit: Mystery Book Clubs Writing Unit: 4th Grade Narrative WritingParent Corner:
● Thursday, June 15th is the last day for grade 3 after school. It is also the day of Multicultural Festival. Feel free to attend.
● Friday, June 16th is field day. Please make sure your child wears sneakers and comfortable clothes. They should also bring water.
Monday- No School
Tuesday
Reading Read for 60 minutes. Be sure to read both fiction and non-fiction. Then in your reading notebook stop and jot about the informational book you read.
If you’re stuck with what to stop and jot about, try a 4th grade main idea stop and jot using the progression below. The big difference is that 4th graders use the text structure in their main idea jots.
Ex. The main idea is the effect of the growing population on China’s animals.
Ex. The main idea is comparing types of plants in the Amazon Rainforest.
Writing Look through the fiction books in your book baggies. Remember that authors use other others to get ideas for their writing. Find something an author did that you’d like to try in your own writing. Write a new piece or revise an old piece to include this using post-its or revision strips.
Possible things to look for:
● How the author uses dialogue● When you read slowly and when you read quickly

Content Read page 2 of the China text, “Inventions and Achievements.” Closely read by annotating and marking up the text. Then respond to the following question:

Reading Read for 60 minutes. Be sure to be reading both fiction and non-fiction. In your reading notebook stop and jot about a fiction text you read.
If you’re stuck with what to jot about, try using the progression below to write a 4th grade character change jot. The big difference is that readers not only notice the change, but focus a lot about the causes of the change. They also think about what a character learns based on how they changed.
Writing Look at your narrative writer’s checklist. Find one thing on the checklist that you think you can do better in your story (everyone, even adults, have something they could do better). Work tonight on revising your story for that one thing (you can pick two if you’d like). At this point, focus on making your ideas better more than your spelling or punctuation.

If you’re stuck with what to jot about, try a 4th grade part to whole jot using the progression below. Just like the 4th grade main idea jot, the big difference is that 4th graders think about text structure when linking two parts.
Writing By now if you’ve done all your writing classwork and homework you should have at least 8 entries (that are one page or longer)! If you don’t, catch up by writing more entries tonight and over the weekend. On Monday, you will choose one story that you will revise and edit to make even better. Look through all of your entries and find the one that you think is your very best. Mark the page with a post-it or star. Look at your narrative writer’s checklist. Based on the checklist, why is this your best story?

If you’re stuck with what to jot about, you can try a 4th grade jot “Analyzing Author’s Craft” jot using the progression below.
Find something the author did and think, “How would the story be different if this was written in a different way?
Writing Look at the story you selected as your seed idea to take through the writing process. Read through the story and correct any editing mistakes. Writers include not only what is happening to their characters but also what is happening inside the characters. Revise your writing to include the internal story (you can use the prompts below to help you out)

This is not what you’re noticing, wondering, or thinking about your story. You’re adding in what you were noticing, wondering, or thinking at that moment you are writing about.
