THE CLASS OF 1984 PROUDLY PRESENTS

Page 6: 1984 Petrean

The S ta tue of L iberty is an international symbol of opportunity. It is truly fitting tha t this impressive landm ark is so closely situated to the Prep com m unity. As the S ta tue serves as a sign of hope to im m igrants of this country, so too does St. P eter’s offer inspiration to its students.

A t Prep, there is a com bination of circum stances which makes for a fine education and a promising future. Faculty presence, an abundance of activities, and pride in the school are three such factors. These conditions gel to form the perfect atm osphere for learning. In this environm ent, Prep men are supplied with all the tools needed to become the best individuals they possibly can.

P rep’s fine academ ic program is the prim ary aspect of the school which makes it such a rem arkable asset. U pon graduation, students are tru ly prepared to m eet fu ture challenges. The S ta tue of L iberty is symbolic o f the opportunities A m erica holds. For the g raduate who has taken advantage of Prep, the school rem ains a symbol o f special opportunity in his life.

Preparing students for college and life after high school is one of the principle objectives of a Prep education. After experiencing this education, Prep men are truly ready to venture out and meet the challenges of their future. Although these students are prepared, they need a means of entering into this phase of their lives. Father Raymond Balduf, S.J., the Director of College Placement and Chairman of the Guidance Department, is this means.

Many underclassmen may not be acquainted with Father Balduf and his work. However, as their years progress and they approach the end of senior year, they will surely get to know him and see how much he actually does for our school. He displays tremendous care for his students in many areas. Offering general guidance and direction, meeting with parents to discuss colleges and financial aid, and conducting personal student interviews are three obvious examples of his great concern.

His job, which is tedious on occasion, consumes a majority of his time. Nevertheless, Father Balduf accepts it with delight and genuine enthusiasm. There is not a graduate of Prep who has not, in some way, been affected and aided by his presence. His list of accomplishments can simply be seen by the quality of schools which Prep alumni have attended.

In gratitude and appreciation, we, the editors of the 1984 Petrean, dedicate this yearbook to Father Raymond Balduf, S .J.

In the analysis o f the to ta l “ P rep experience” , the faculty proves to be the focal point around which the en tire school revolves. T he teachers, counselors, and adm in istra to rs are the m ost valuable assets o f the school. In addition to educating P rep men in the academ ic areas, they m old them into m ature, C hristian adults while aid ing each studen t in the ir growing process.

T he relationship betw een teacher and studen t a t St. P e te r s is very unique. T he facu lty m em bers are not only instructors, they are also friends and helpful associates. This type o f rela tionsh ip is extrem ely p ro fitab le to bo th sides. It increases understanding between teacher and studen t, and establishes a firm bond of tru s t and loyalty betw een them . As is visible a t P rep, learning is a m uch m ore enjoyable experience under these conditions.

SPIRIT UNLIMITEDThe atm osphere a t P rep is one of intense en

thusiasm . W hether in the classrooms or after school, students and faculty m em bers alike display trem endous in terest in their work. Endless hours are devoted to work on projects which will improve and enhance the Prep com m unity. The result o f this dedication is pride in both individual accom plishm ents and the Prep spirit.

A feeling of exuberance perm eates the halls of our school. A ppreciation of Prep has resulted in perpetual dedication to its functions. Rallies, open houses, and the W alkathon are examples of this g reat enthusiasm . The entire school is greatly energized by this feeling. T here is surely no lack of pride at Prep!

THE CONSTANT VARIETY OF SPOR TS

Whether on the diamond, the ice, or the mat, St. Peter’s has one of the more diversified sports programs in the state. This variety provides students of all personalities the opportunity to compete in sports. The agile hockey players, the graceful track stars, and the aggressive wrestlers are some of the many athletes who contribute to our glory. The dedicated coaches, trainers, and fans all work to make St. Peter’s belter than the rest of the competition. The transition from prominence to dominance is under way at Prep.

THE M ELTING POTAt Prep, just as in the city where it is located,

there is an extraordinary mixture of students. Here, many Prep men come into contact with others from different backgrounds, often for the first time. This is a great experience, for it enables students to become familiar with all types of people.

Prep’s cultural and ethnic mix is far greater than the majority of schools in New Jersey. Blacks, Orientals, and Whites unite to work for the betterment of each other. An atmosphere of harmony is encouraged throughout the school. Under these conditions, racial barriers begin to deteriorate.

Page 72: 1984 Petrean

STRIVING FOREach tim e we pass through the doors of Prep, we draw nearer

to attaining our goal o f excellence. W ith each accom plishm ent we achieve, we move one step closer to this objective. Through the faculty and our peers, we are pushed to reach for perfection.

A t Prep, we are recognized as m ature, responsible individuals. There are factors here which lead us to the search for perfection. The quality of education is one such factor. It is rigorous enough to endow students with the drive to succeed. The opportunity to becom e involved in activities and sports is also om nipresent. We try to help the school and ourselves by becoming active. This striving for excellence is evident in every aspect of the school: spiritual, social, and academ ic. Prep men are never satisfied with being second best.

DRAMATICS INHERIT THE WIND

Consistency is often taken for granted, but this is not the case with St. P eter’s D ram atic Society. Parents, students, and faculty m em bers who are treated to many fine perform ances, continually praise the efforts of this hardw orking cast. This group, which includes budding actresses from St. Dom’s and St. A l’s have m ade Prep plays very successful. FOOTBALLPrep football is back with a vengeance.

The em ergence of Prep as a County power cannot be denied! U nder the tutelage of H ead Coach G erry Bellotti and his assistants, the team is again a force to be reckoned with. Led by the inspired leadership of co-captains Chris W ood and Chris M onico, Prep sported a potent offense and a stingy defense. M uch of the squad’s success can be attribu ted to the outstanding play of Dave LoBello, M ike Boyle, and the offensive and defensive lines appropriately nam ed “The H ogs.” Co-Captains Chris Monico and Chris Wood.

Prep confidently entered the traditional opening I gam e against Xavier. However, the C adets’ strong running gam e surprised the M aruaders. The Prep offense could not get on track and the result was a 14-0 loss.

U ndaunted, St. Peter’s prepared rigorously for their upcom ing opponent, Hudson. The Prep machine was in high gear as they rolled over the Hawks, 33-6, Prep continued their winning ways in a 14-6 victory over M arist.

Before this season, St. Peter’s had not beaten Bay- j onne in 13 years. This losing streak was brought to a j screeching halt by a m iraculous 22-21 victory. Prep j dissembled the Bees’ defense in the final drive scoring j with 6 seconds rem aining.

Dennys Tapia hauls down a Memorial back in the open field.

T he Lions of Lincoln fell prey to a ferocious Prep offense next. I t was easy, 33-6. The following week it looked grim as St. P eter’s fell to a 14-0 halftime deficit against an opportunistic Union Hill squad. But an inspiring halftim e speech by Coach Bellotti fired up the Prepsters. A nother last second victory was the result, 18-14.

P rep’s five gam e winning streak was snapped by M em orial the next week, 27-7. Y et, it did not m atter. The gam e of the year was forthcom ing: St. Peter’s versus St. Jo e ’s for the county Title. P rep totally dom inated the first half, playing to a 7-7 deadlock. A decisive second half put S t. Joe’s over the top, 20-7.

St. P e te r’s ended the season on a winning note, thrashing Hoboken, 28-21 to cap off a 6-3 year. There is no denying th a t S t. P e te r’s is once again a force to be reckoned with!

This year proved to be a rebuilding season for the Prep gym team . The gymnasts showed a great deal o f enthusiasm with the arrival o f new coach Lou G uarini. The team rallied around the efforts of senior Rodney Terry, junior Danny Berardinelli, and sophom ore Aldenys Acosta. The highlight of the gym season was the N ew Je rsey N ovice M eet. Danny Berardinelli sprung a strong th ird place finish in the vault com petition; and Aldenys Acosta captured an impressive th ird place in all around events. The Prep hoopsters, coming off a successful ’82-’83 cam paign, look to continue their winning ways in ’84. The M arauders are led by All-County forward Gavin Cum mings and veteran floor leader Bill H erenda. A consistent C arlton Rodgers and bullish Arvin Todd round out the front line, as high scoring John Stokes controls the other back court spot. However, Coach Jerry H alligan, in his 28th season of coaching, also has the luxury of a very deep supporting cast. John M oriarty, a steady perform er, and sharp shooting C huck H arrington, can be counted on for instant offense. Jorge Alvarez, Paul Pineiro, Earnie Redwine, and rising star M ike Flynn, add stability to this m ulti-talented squad.
