Parsons “Tool Box" Talks Form an Important Link to Promote Safety

“Charla na Caha di Herment ” Ta Importante pa Promove Seguridad

As the number of men in the

field on the HDS Project in-

creases, the task of commun-

icating proper safety procedu-

res becomes more important.

A method has been developed

by Parsons Corporation to

reach these men at their job

site with current information

pertaining to a specific job in

an effective manner.

Tool Box Safety Meetings

were developed through years

of worldwide experience by

Parsons safety engineers in

the field. Once the program

was established, the discussion

material is kept up to date

and tailored for use in each in-

dividual construction situation.

This has been the key to suc-

cess. The topics now fill nine

volumes covering everything

from original site clearing

problems to mechanical com-

pletion.

Development of a "safety

attitude” in workmen results

in fewer and less serious ac-

cidents. This attitude is taught

by relating practices to speci-

fic equipment. The discussions

often result in suggestions

from the workmen on better

methods of handling a danger-

ous job situation. This feed-

back provides management

with material to plan improv-

ed programs on a continual

basis.

The "tool box’ meetings are

scheduled daily, beginning im-

mediately after the lunch

break at 12:30 p.m. At present

six safety men, Barbarito

Amaya, Jose Dirksz, Bertrand

Rovelet, Simon Geerman,

Francisco Thiel, and Ramiro

E. De Kort (all ex-Lago em-

ployees) handle twenty-five

meetings per week with differ-

ent groups of men throughout

the HDS project site. Hach

meeting is limited to 5 or 10

minutes and to one single to-

pic. When discussion tends to

exceed the limit, which is

good, the topic is continued at

the next session.

The foreman is the key to

setting the tempo of discus-

sion on the day’s topic, and to

providing pertinent demonstra-

tions on proper use of tools or

equipment.

The "tool box’ system of

safety talks becomes the main

stream of communication be-

tween field personnel and

management. One example of

its result was when a recent

supply of safety shoes arrived

in the warehouse. The message

was passed on to field person-

nel by the safety inspectors

and over 180 pair were sold

the first day and over 800

pair to date. Other related of-

ficial news is also communi-

cated through these talks with

equally good results.

Segun e cantidad di traha-

dor na sitio di planta desulfu-

rador nobo ta bai aumentando,

trabao di comunica procedi-

mentonan di seguridad ta bira

mas importante. Parsons Cor-

poration a pensa un manera

To service aircraft, from

taining 4,000 gallons of jet

fuel and one with a capacity

of 2,000 gallons of aviation

fuel. With these trucks, the

men transport Esso products

from Lago to the storage

tanks at Beatrix Airport.

While one single plane may

load approximately 15,000 gal-

lons, on weekends these men

service up to a dozen large

planes, supplying some 50,000

gallons of fuel during the

busy season. In addition to

fuel, the Aviation Terminal al-

so supplies turbo and aviation

oils.

To learn the latest in air-

craft servicing and refueling,

Arturo Thijzen, Marketing

Operations Supervisor, and

Niles Oduber in November last

year attended a 5-day training

course in Puerto Rico.

As part of Esso’s New

Aviation Terminal personnel

now sport new uniforms. In

addition, the Terminal build-
