I heard a discussion on the National Radio a few weeks ago about the importance of entrepreneurs. What I found interesting was the statement that the most successful initiators of new enterprises are not the bright young things in their twenties and thirties we all imagine these to be, but people in their forties, fifties and sixties who have learned about how the world works. This seems to be the case at the OceaNZ Blue paua aquaculture plant in Ruakaka. Doug Lloyd, who in a former life managed Hawkins Construction, was ready for a peaceful retirement in Mangawhai. He was persuaded by the OceaNZ Blue investors to take up the reins at this innovative new company and he is now having the time of his life.I think the OceaNZ Blue operation is just the kind of enterprise we should be encouraging in Northland. It makes use of something that was already in place, the ocean intake and outfall pipes for the Marsden B Power Plant and in its overseas marketing, talks about our clean coastal waters and pristine farmland. It is also sustainable, which Doug has discovered, is another powerful marketing advantage. I wonder how many Northland people with savings they are putting aside for their retirement would be interested in investing in productive, sustainable enterprises of this kind in our region. Someone should set up an investment company along these lines. But perhaps we are all too suspicious of investment companies in any shape or form these days to go anywhere near such a beast. With such high unemployment we really need these kinds of ventures. There must be many people whose talents are being wasted in the unemploymnet queues but who have the capacity to take on the challenge of working in a venture like this The success of OceaNZ

Blue shows us we do have quite a lot going for us in the North, if only more people would recognise it. We have creativity in abundance if last Saturday’s Art n’Tartan wearable arts show organised by the Waipu Museum is anything to go by. It was a wonderful show and all the participants need to be congratulated. I took a daughter and a niece from Auckland and Hamilton respectively to the matinee performance and I think they were both very surprised at the standard of the presentation and the entries. Not bad for a little country town.

farming industry. Dairy farmer Julie Paton said she and husband Bruce have a full complement of staff and regularly get people phoning up to see if they have work. Julie said the banks have toughened up on their criteria for lending money and it is difficult for farmers to raise capital to buy new land. Most interest in investment in farming at present is coming from overseas, particularly from China. Waipu farmer Stuart Abercrombie says that because milk prices have been high, the contractors who work in the farming industry should be getting plenty of work but he agrees with Julie that, because it is harder to get loans, farmers are not buying new land or building new cowsheds and other plant. Also he thinks there is a bit of catch up maintenance work to do after years of droughts and lower milk prices. Stuart commented that, although he gets lots of applicants for any job vacancy he advertisers, it is not always easy to find a person with the right attitude and qualifications. Good attitude, he said is the most important attribute he is looking for. “We take the precautions any responsible employer would. We ring around and do reference checks. We always ask what was the person’s attitude like?”

Jeanette said her inspiration came from the devastating tsunami that overwhelmed the Japanese people in March. She said the message she wishes to convey is “Rise up from under the waves of destruction and take the refuse and build on it, to be renewed and empowered to take on life and whatever is thrown on our path and come out stronger for it.” There were 57 entries in total in this year’s competition and there was some pretty stiff competition, including a huge red tartan fish by Elizabeth and Ivan McCabe and Carolyn and Steve Skelton, winner of the Fireside Stories from the land of Myth section, a majestic Queen of Tartan by Penny Goodall and Louise Sims, which won the Dressed to Kilt open section, an intricately woven colour-ful blanket cape by Jo Keith, winner of the Warriors, Druids and Bards section and an entry by Bream Bay College students Emma Ferriss and Anna Worthing-ton entitled Pohutukawa Frenzy with a skirt resembling a pohutukawa flower to represent New Zealand’s magical summers, which won the McKiwi section. Ella Hague won the primary school student mask section and Stephanie Wick-ham, Olive Grant and Tessa Paton won the award for an outstanding entry by a secondary school student with a tartan bumble bee outfit.

Lochness Monsterette by Natalie Guest and modelled by Natasha Gubbing - sec-ond in the Fireside Stories section. Natalie said the piece was inspired by Lady Gaga. She used tartan fabric from old school uniforms, a silver roll-away mat, satin fabricm tulle, a pool noodle, silver metal pot scourers and knitting needles.Natalie is the daughter of Sandra Guest, winner of last year’s competition

For those who missed the shows, or those who were there but who would still like to have a closer look, the winner and 11 other entries will be on display in shops around Waipu until the end of this week. Start at the museum to view the winning exhibit and pick up a map to show where the other exhibits are. Simon Johnson of Waipu Museum said as many people could not get tickets to either of the two shows this will be an opportunity for them to see some of the crea-tions. Simon said he was overwhelmed by the amount of volunteer support that went into creating the show and wants to thank everyone who contributed.

I am writing as I am sad that many people in our area apparently do not appreciate what an amazing, intel-ligent, awesome woman Margaret Hicks is.How very fortunate we are to have her with her amaz-ing grasp of the effect of many things being shoved through and her keen knowledge of environment law, trying to protect our wildlife and environment from hu-man, industrial harm, and pollution. How she does it all at her age and in pain is to be ap-plauded not attacked.Attacking her to try to shut her up or stop her efforts is shameful .Those highly paid people such as our council DOC et al seem to have no interest in protecting us or the en-vironment. The small minded people whom attack her should in-stead help her with protecting the precious and beauti-ful environment and the life in it here before it is too late.Surely this would be far more rewarding than these this constant and unsavory attacks on such a community minded outstanding citizen?

The written ‘Right of Reply’ by the Wolf 2008 Ltd. developers for the Port Marsden Service Centre has been issued to submitters who appeared at the hearing in opposition to the development. Any hope that our concerns have been listened to and taken into account have been blatantly dashed by Mr. K.R.M. Littlejohn’s (Counsel for Wolf 2008 Ltd.) reply submission. In keeping with Mr. Littlejohn’s consistently sarcastic approach, the opening sentence to the “Flooding Section’ of his official report to the Commissioners is: “The PMSC will not make it rain more.” This is a prime example of the attitude and quality of reports given (both verbally and in writing) by the Wolf team of “experts.”The paragraph on “Appropriateness of Location” states: “Two local submitters did not criticise the concept of the PMSC or the useful facilities and services it would provide them and the wider travelling public.” This makes it abundantly clear that the original submissions have either, not been read, or they have simply chosen to completely disregard them. Almost every opposing submission pointed out the strange combination of activities encompassed within this development. Also the services proposed already exist in the surrounding area, as did the assessment by R.A Skidmore (RA. Skidmore Urban Design Ltd.), which was requested by the Whangarei District Council. Although most submitters would withdraw their opposition, if the PMSC were relocated to a suitable zone on a site without flooding issues, it was definitely made clear, that the PMSC is considered a white elephant by many locals. James Griffin (N.R.C. Consents Officer) has stated that uncertainties remain about the extent of the overflow that can be expected and the precise impacts of diverting an existing overland flow path. “The proposal involves the effective damming of an existing overland flow path, and diversion of the overland flow around an elevated development site.” “It is recommended that without detailed design based on such modelling, as the not yet complete NRC Ruakaka River Management Plan, then evidence currently available gives uncertainty as to the degree of off - site adverse effects from flooding, such that these effects may be more than minor.” Mr. Littlejohn’s statement includes the following: “It (the applicant) does not consider a requirement for it to construct a detailed hydraulic model for the relevant catchments to be necessary or reasonable.” Although no Environmental Survey has been carried out, the Wolf Team continues to insist that they have fulfilled their obligations in this respect. Nor have they addressed our concern that, upon completion of the peat dump, they have no intention of replacing the drainage. This will leave neighbours in extreme jeopardy, in this constantly tidal flooded portion of the PMSC site. There is nothing in this submission that suggests that the local landowners’ very legitimate concerns over increased flooding (or indeed anything else) have even been acknowledged by the Wolf developers.

J. Hawkins Ruakaka.

Firstly to correct Graham Finlayson’s statement that the Ruakaka Recreation Centre Building is owned by the Whangarei District Council; the writer received on Monday the 12th July last an Email from the Whanga-rei District Council with the following statement; The Ruakaka Recreation Centre Inc. leases land at Ruakaka Recreation Grounds. The lease is for a term of 66 years from commencement on September 1st 1981. It expires on the 31st August 2047. The lease is for the land only. The Ruakaka Rec. Centre pays a peppercorn rental of $1 per year. Any buildings which are on the site are the lessees responsibility to insure and maintain (being The Ruakaka Recreation. Centre Inc.). Secondly, the dispute with the Squash Club arose when the Rec. Centre proposed to increase the Squash Club fees by over 100%. When the Squash Club had only 15 paid up members. The Squash Club at the time counter proposed a fee based on a per member basis, and as per the terms of their lease took the Rec.Centre to arbitra-tion, which was the Squash Club’s democratic right. Needless to say the arbitrator’s decision was in favour of the Squash Club. At the next A.G.M. the Squash Club nominated its then Club Captain Brett Armour to run against Graham Finlayson for the position of chair-man. Brett Armour was succsessful. All those that at-tended used their democratic right to vote the way they saw fit. A few months after the A.G.M,. under the new Chair-manship and committee they applied to the A.S.B. for a grant on behalf of the Rec. Centre which was duly granted. These funds were used for repairs and main-tainence and general painting and tidy up of the Rec. Centre. That’s Called Progress! Lastly now is the time for all user groups and clubs to work for the collective good of the Rec. Centre in the hope that it once again can become the sporting and recreation hub of our community.

People living down along the coastline in the Ruakaka village did not hear the tsunami siren when it went off on Thursday 7 July. Nor did they hear the sirens go off when a test was run over Queens Birthday weekend. Ron Teague, who lives just over the road from the sand dunes in Te Kamo St. said he stayed inside when the warning siren was set off on Saturday as that is where he and his family are likely to be if a warning is given. Ron said the nearest siren to his home is up on Peter Snell Rd. Some friends who live at the other end of Te Kamo St., and closer to the siren didn’t hear it either. “If they can’t hear it, what chance have we got? Yet we live down here close to the beach where it is all going to happen.”Ron said the pamphlet, which was sent around to homes showed that there are five sirens along One Tree Point Rd. “Craig Brown, the Chairman of the Northland Regional Council has got lots of warning sirens where he lives, but here in the village we just have the one in Peter Snell Road.”Graeme MacDonald the Civil Defence Manager for the Northland Regional Council said, “We accept that the siren isn’t going to get to everyone.”He said the installation of 68 sirens throughout the district last month had improved the warning system but this was not the only way people would be told about a tsunami threat. Warnings would also be issued over the radio, on television, by neighbours telephoning one another and by telephone texting. He said that when the sirens are activated this is a sign that something is going on and people need to turn on their radios to find out what is happening. The sirens do not necessarily mean people need to head for the hills. Asked why the siren in Ruakaka Village is situated in Peter Snell Rd. rather than closer to the beach, Mr. MacDonald said only particular power poles could hold the sirens and it is likely none of the correct type of poles are in place on the coast. He said the NRC has received a number of complaints from people living in coastal areas of the district who had not heard the siren. The NRC is considering installing some more sirens but has not decided on this yet or where these would go.

Tsunami sirens out of ear shot for people living near the beach in the Ruakaka Village

This band of hardy Waipu people jumped into the sea at Waipu Cove last week for the annual mid winter swim, organised by the Waipu Cove Surf Lifesaving Club as part of the Tartan Week in Waipu celebrations. The stirring music of Bain McGregor’s bagpipes helped the swimmers to brave the cold water.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ARE WELCOME

Most people will not have heard of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement, let alone read it. Understandably we are all too busy with our lives to study government policy in detail. However, this recently revised document should be of some interest to us since it protects our coastal marine area from in - appropriate development, promotes the preservation of the natural character of the coast and all wildlife therein and makes provision for public access etc. So what is the Whangarei Racing Club doing by proposing a development, which contravenes much of this policy statement and certain section of the Resource Management Act? Having finally rid ourselves of Mardsen B, are we to be subjected to another eyesore in our dunes? As the law stands at present, the Northland Regional Council and the Whangarei District Council are required by the by the RMA 1991 Part 5, Sections 67 and 75 to give effect to the Coastal Policy Statement. So why are some councillors actively promoting this development? Aren’t they supposed to be respecting the law? Why are they apparently encouraging the Racing Club to undermine government policy? Have those councillors actually read the NZ Coastal Policy Statement? Significantly, if the Racing Club was to apply to transfer its activities from Kensington to the Ruakaka dunes to-day, as it did many years ago, it would almost certainly be refused, as the current NZCPS Policy No 6, Section 2d states that activities that do not have a functional need for location in the coastal marine area, generally should not be located there.” As most people know, New Zealand’s racecourses and training establishments are to be found inland. They do not need to be by the sea! In these circumstances there are no legitimate grounds to locate a private residential development and other amenities within the present site of the Ruakaka Race course. Moreover, another issue worthy of consideration is the fact that when the racing club was originally granted permission to purchase Crown land on the Bream Bay coast, according to records, it was on the understanding that the land was to be used for public recreation. Private residential development at least three stories

high hardly qualifies as public recreation and surely betrays the original intent of the sale. I would be surprised if most people did not want to see the racecourse prosper but up-grading the grandstand and improving racing facilities is one thing and certainly does not justify an environmentally destructive development which will disfigure the coastal landscape, destroy the peace and tranquillity of the area and, in so doing, ravage protected wildlife. Why it could even adversely impact upon racing itself.New Zealand is a signatory to three international conventions, which guarantee the protection of our country’s coastal environment, including our summer migrants, the godwits (objective 7 of the policy). It is not a good look to welsh on such agreements and therefore damage New Zealand’s “clean green” image overseas. Certainly it will reflect poorly on our two councils and reinforce Northland’s “cowboy country” reputation. The magnificent uninterrupted sweep of Bream Bay, its white sands, fringed with dunes and the ever changing Ruakaka estuary are two of this area’s greatest assets to be valued now and by future generations in years to come. Why degrade them? There have to be other ways to assist the Whangarei Racing Club.

Margaret Hicks Ruakaka

Amnesty at the Ruakaka Library As there are a number of books which have been borrowed and not returned the Ruakaka Library Committee voted at its AGM last month to hold a one month amnesty for the month of August during which time you will be able to bring overdue books back to the library without being fined. The new Library Chairperson Essie Leech asks library users to “Please have a good search around your homes for Ruakaka Library books.”

When the new Ruakaka Library was being built the library committee asked for a return slot in the

And a return box at Supervalue

front door. However, this was considered to be a fire hazard. However, many library users, particularly those who work during the week are finding it hard to get there in library hours. The Supervalue Supermarket has agreed to have a return box in the foyer of the supermarket. Library Chairwoman Essie Leech said already the return box is being well used. The Ruakaka library building will soon have a new set of self -opening front doors. Essie said the library doors can be very hard and awkward to open, especially if you are carrying piles of books. The self - opening doors will also make the library more user - friendly for people in wheelchairs.

Yvonne Judge, the owner of Scavengers Recycling shop, is questioning why her business, which hands all its profits over to charity, and which by promoting recycling, helps reduce the amount of material ending up in the council rubbish collection should be charged commercial rates by the Whangarei District Council. In 2009 Scavengers paid out $2,700 in rates and last year the charge was $3,200. Yvonne sent a letter off to local Councillors Phil Halse and Shelley Deeming asking why Scavengers was being charged so much and received a reply from the Council’s communications Manager Pauline Rose which said,“The reason is that the building is located in a commercial area, therefore commercial rates apply. As such, the business enjoys the advantages of being in a high traffic zone and may arguably attract less custom if it were located elsewhere. Charging a full commercial rate to your business is consistent with Council’s position in relation to other similar operations that operate for charitable purposes. The logic that has been applied to date is that if charitable businesses were to receive rates reductions or exemptions, the deficit would have to be borne by other ratepayers who may not choose to subsidise them in this way.”The letter also told Yvonne that the Council has recently begun a review of its rates and the questions she raised will be considered (once again as Yvonne has raised them in the past) in this review. Yvonne points out that Kepa Rd., where Scavengers is located, could hardly be said to be a “high traffic zone” and most of the traffic on the road is generated by this business. “All that money which goes to the Council is money we don’t have to give out to local community groups”, she said.

Bream Bay News Page 8 21 July 2011

Doug Lloyd, the CEO at OceaNZ Blue, in a former life, was manager of Hawkins Construction Ltd., which was, at that time, New Zealand’s largest construction company. He was asked to take a look at OceaNZ Blue by one of its shareholders, a man he had worked with for the past 15 years. Doug, who was planning on retirement in Mangawhai, came to meet the staff and look over the plant, not feeling terribly enthusiastic about the prospect of taking on a new job. He says what made him change his mind was the enthusiasm and commitment of the young people who work at OceaNZ Blue. What does a former construction company manager have to offer an aquaculture venture? Doug says it is his analytical, problem - solving skills, which were recognised by the four shareholders as something their company needed. He now travels widely (more often then he really wants to), marketing OceaNZ Blue paua or abalone, as it is known in other parts of the world. It has been a huge challenge as the plant came into full-scale production just as the recession hit. At present Hong Kong is where the biggest sales are made. “Europe is also a good market for us. The USA was our best market but until you visit the states, you don’t realise how badly the economy there has suffered.” Customers in Japan, who five years ago were saying ‘send us your best product and don’t worry about the cost’, now ask about the cheapest price. What Doug calls “Brand New Zealand” plays a big part in the OceaNZ Blue marketing strategy. The company website talks about the pristine waters and countryside of Bream Bay. Sustainability is something else the markets are interested in. “A few years ago people worried a lot about a product being organic but you don’t hear that word so much now. People want to know if the product is sustainable and they want it to be traceable. Paua are slow growing and harvesting them from the sea on a large scale soon leads to serious depletion, so aquaculture is the sustainable alternative. The OceaNZ Blue nursery grows spat harvested from its own farmed adult paua. Doug finds the young people on his staff have a much stronger conservation ethic than people of his own generation. “Which is just as well or else we would all be doomed.” They initiated a recycling system for bags of paua food pellets, purchased at the rate of 18 tonne a month. These bags get sorted and sent out for various types of re-use – some by a composting plant, some were used to stabilise ground after the Samoa earthquake. Paua shells are sold to a company in Vietnam, which makes them into the thin rolled paua sheets popular in jewellery and those paua twirl decorations on fancy notebook covers. “We could sell twenty times as much shell as we get”, says Doug. Most of their product is shipped frozen still in its shell. The seawater in the paua tanks is pumped in and out through the big intake and outtake pipes, built for the Marsden B Power plant (which was never used and is now being dismantled). Having these pipes already in situ, is a huge asset and makes OceaNZ Blue the envy of aquaculture ventures around the world. OceaNZ Blue and the NIWA aquaculture research centre together use only a fraction of the water the pipes are capable of carrying. When Prime Minister John Key called for a threefold increase in aquaculture in New Zealand, he was advised by the people at OceaNZ Blue that huge amounts of investment money is needed if this goal is to be achieved. This year for the first time in the eight years of the company’s existence, its four major shareholders are seeing a return on the money they have spent. OceaNZ Blue is New Zealand’s only surviving paua aquaculture plant. There have been other attempts but these have all failed. Doug says this was mostly due to investors running out of money. There are, however, 20,000 abalone farms around the world. The product is highly valuable and there is tight security at the plant. Visitors are not generally encouraged and if you are lucky enough to get an invitation you are

let in through a security gate. In South Africa there are frequent violent clashes between poachers and police and in one instance a truckful of abalone was hijacked and its driver shot. Asian people are the biggest consumers of abalone. “Even in our markets in North America and Europe it is mostly Asian people who buy our product,” says Doug. Abalone is thought to have aphrodisiac properties and it is considered very prestigious to offer guests one each at a Hong Kong wedding feast. When Doug joined OceaNZ Blue, four years ago he decided scientists were needed on site to take the guesswork out of decision-making. “The trouble with something as slow growing as paua – which take four to five years to reach market size - is that you can make a mistake and not realise it until it is too late to reverse.” The expertise of OceaNZ Blue scientists Dr. Rodney Roberts and Owen Bunting is now sought by aquaculture farms around the world. The exacting business of creating the algae rich conditions, which induce the microscopic shrimp like paua spawn to take hold on the side of a tank and transform into shellfish is the preserve of Dr. Roberts. The OceaNZ Blue nursery is one place where slime growth is welcome. Rows of tanks resembling underwater filing cabinets with plastic sheet files are turning green in readiness for paua spawn to be added to the mix. Water taken from Bream Bay for the tanks is cleaned and reused three times before it is pumped back out into the bay. The saltwater treatment plant at OceaNZ Blue was developed with help from NIWA and is the first of its type in the world. Doug explained, “We tendered around the world for someone who could develop a system for us. Two quotes came in from Norway, which is the number one aquaculture country in the world. They wanted $7million US and ongoing $500,000 US to keep it going. We thought this was a bit too expensive.”The water is treated with ultra violet rays and goes through bio treatment tanks. Thousands of small round plastic wheels bob about on the surface of the treatment tanks. These are essentially little houses for the bacteria, which feed on the ammonia produced by all those thousands of paua. The water is kept turbulent and therefore oxygenated to give the bacteria prime growing conditions. Another OceaNZ Blue invention is a water bucket tipping system for the tiers of tanks where paua are grown to maturity. It’s a bit like the famous bucket fountain in Wellington’s Cuba Mall. Plastic buckets fill with water, gravity fed from the tanks

OceaNZ Blue, Ruakaka’s paua aquaculture plant suceeding despite difficult market The OceanNZ Blue paua aquaculture plant, alongside the NIWA research centre in Ruakaka, employs 20 full time and 11 part time casual staff, who work three or four days a week in its packing plant. At a time of high local unemployment, it offers interesting jobs and possible careers in an innovative industry likely to grow.

Doug Lloyd, CEO of OceaNZ Blue, alongside the bio treatment tanks. The saltwater treatment system used as OceaNZ Blue was developed by NIWA and OceaNZ Blue staff and is the first of its kind in the world.

above until they tip over and empty into the tanks below. This was designed to keep the water oxygenated but has the added advantage of stirring up all the faeces, which would otherwise settle at the bottom of the tanks and flushing it down the outflow pipes. OceaNZ Blue produces 100 tonne of abalone each year. There are plans, dependent on finding the right investor, on doubling this production. Doug says he thought he was going to be semi - retired when he came to work at OceaNZ Blue. “I don’t think I have ever worked this hard in my life. But I’m pretty happy with what we are doing here.”

Packhouse manager Linda Boielle has worked for OceaNZ Blue for six years. These paua are being prepared for shipment to Hong Kong. When she first began work at the plant she was assigned to looking after the tanks with the tiniest paua. She came back from holiday once to find a tank had been cleared out and burst into tears thinking “someone had killed her babies. “Of course in the end we kill them all”’says CEO Doug Lloyd, “but it is an example of the dedication of the people who work here.”

Golden Oldies Netball and Men in Kilts rugby

The older the members of the netball team the higher the score, was how it worked out at the Golden Oldies netball tournament held at the Waipu Tennis Club on Fri-day 8 July, part of the week long Waipu Tartan celebrations. The team made up of women in their 50s beat the Women in their 40s team 30 to 20, while the 30s team beat the 20s team 19 - 18. Following the netball came the Men in Kilts rugby clash between Waipu and Maun-gaturoto. There were a few bruised and battered bodies around the next day after this hard fought match. The game went to Waipu with a score of 30 to 20.

Maria Waiti has sold her Waipu Stationery and Lotto Shop business to a local family, after six and half years behind the counter and is looking forward to her first summer holiday in Waipu. Like many local retailers, over the three months of summer she has worked seven days a week, so now she wants to spend some time on the beach with her 13- year - old son Billy. She also plans to have coffees at Waipu Cafés and spend “quality time with friends.” Maria said she has really enjoyed her contact with Waipu people. “I have met some fantastic people. There were some elderly people who didn’t have much contact with people who would call in once or twice a week. I developed some good relationships and I am really going to miss that.”Maria said she would be staying on in Waipu as she did not want to take Billy away from Bream Bay College.

Leo Wallis is looking forward to the Rugby World Cup. Not that he will be buying any of those expensive grand - stand tickets. These days he prefers to watch the game from the armchair in his sitting room. Leo celebrated his 90th birthday on American Independence day 4 July with his wife Fay and their children and grandchildren. Their daughter flew over from Melbourne for the occasion. Leo was born in Katikati but spent most of his life in Maungaturoto. He has a twin brother Max still living there. Leo left school at the age of 15 to go farming. He says he wasn’t too interested in schoolwork and preferred to play sport, any kind of sport, “whatever was going” but mostly rugby and tennis. He served many years on the executive of the Maungaturoto Rugby Club. He was Club Captain for ten years and was made a life member in 1977. He saw the club shift from fields alongside the dairy factory to paddocks on a local farm, when the dairy factory land was needed for an expansion, and finally to its present home in Bickerstaffe Road. The family rugby tradition continues as Leo has a grandson who plays for North Auckland. When the Second World War broke out Leo and Max enlisted with the army. He attended various training camps around Northland and then was sent to the Solomon Islands where he saw action at Guadalcanal. He remembers there were quite a few Waipu boys in the camps with him. After a year overseas he was sent home to New Zealand

and back to work on the family farm. Leo had asked not be put in the same army unit as his brother. “I thought that if one of us was in trouble then the other would go and help and if we were both killed it would be terrible for our parents. Max served in the Middle East and was taken Prisoner of War in Italy. Ray remembers the anxious wait for news of him. “Every time the phone rang our mother would be worried about what the news would be.”Leo and his wife Fay moved to Ruakaka 15 years ago to a house with a view out over the Ruakaka Racecourse and Bream Bay. Leo says they were shown around by Real Estate agent Colin Meale who thought the property might be outside their budget but when they saw the view they decided this was it. “It’s the best thing we ever did”, says Leo who, although he suffers from what he calls “farmers’ knees” and has trouble walking, still leads a very active life. Leo and Fay are both active members of Bream Bay 60s Up and belong to a group of nine people who take turns hosting pot luck dinners. “We have wonderful friends. There are nine of us and we meet at one another’s homes. We do the rounds.”
