CALLING FOR NOMINATIONS
July will be our AGM for 2021 at which time a new committee will be elected. Two positions on the committee need to be filled. The role of President will be vacated by Shane Conry after serving for 3 years elected, and one as acting. The role of President is not arduous. Candidates would only need access to email, the internet and basic PC skills. Essentially, this role manages the progress and agendas for the Club’s Committee and General meetings. Our capable Secretary and Treasurer jointly manage the primary affairs of the Club. The second position to be filled is that of Club Captain, currently very capably performed by Graham Banks. From the work done by Graham and our previous Captain, the club is placed in a very good position. We now publish an an-nual run calendar so that, moving forward, the planned Club Runs and their dates are published in the newsletter to allow members to plan around them. Thus the role of the incoming Captain is to manage the designated runs. Delegation to other members to take the “ownership” of a run would be encouraged so that the work load is shared. By forward planning our runs, we forecast that the run attendance numbers should grow which is also very positive. Graham has already carefully built up an extensive library of past/future runs to easily maintain an annual calendar of events to assist in this role for the future. The Club has a very good structure in place and the committee tasks are not arduous. The change to committee meetings to be held immediately prior to the General meetings has also reduced time demands making it even easier to contribute. It’s your club, so get involved. I ask members to think seriously about taking up a role to help manage our club .

WEEK DAY RUN FRIDAY 11TH JUNE 2021
Week Day Run - Nautical themed run to the Yacht Squadron With inclement weather forecast; this run was changed from
Tuesday 8th June 2021 to Friday 11th June 2021. Brian and I arrived at the Clubrooms to find Libby and Ric Ottaway already
there making a cuppa. We signed in and were given our Run Sheet. Brian Collins and Barry Scrimshaw arrived soon after. We
exited the Car Park and headed towards Cross Road turning Right into Cross Road. Following our instructions we visited the
Adelaide Sailing Club and the SA Sea Rescue Squadron and back out passing the Adventure Playground and West Beach Cara-
van Park. Onto to Seaview Road and passing the Henley Sailing Club, Grange Sailing Club and back to Military Road past Row-
ing SA. We turned into West Lakes Boulevard and noticed the development where AAMI Stadium once stood. Onto Port Ade-
laide and via various roads, we saw the huge blades and turbines for the wind farms. We drove around the City of Adelaide,
clipper ship and the ketch Nelcebee and the sailing ship One and All. Passing the ships “graveyard” and into Garden Island
Road, passing the Small Boat Club and turned around at the Garden Island Yacht Club and back onto Garden Island Road to a
Dolphin Sanctuary Lookout near the Angas Inlet Boat Club. Heading around and about we passed the Police Academy and the
Largs Bay Sailing Club and the Cruising Yacht Club of SA and the public marinas, the Outer Harbour Passenger Terminal to the
Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron. We enjoyed our lunch and a chat in the BBQ area and were joined by Malcolm, Carly,
Carol and Karen. We had lost Brian and Bazz but they had stopped off for a bite at Port Adelaide en route but joined us at the
Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron for some chocolates and a cream puff. Ric and Libby took us for a stroll around the
marinas and explained the different areas and yachts. We also visited their yacht and then went back to the Clubrooms which
have extensive South Australian history which was really interesting to us. It was a great run and Brian and I visited many
sailing clubs and places we did not know existed. Oh and the weather turned out to be lovely too. A perfect day and outing.
Thanks so much Ric and Libby.

Betty Pflaum 29 Sept 1928 - 3 June 2021
Betty was a long time active Member of the Adelaide Antique Automobile Club Inc. with her rare 1932 Chev. Tourer.
Her shorthand skills were used in the position of Secretary for many years ensuring the most accurate Minutes I have ever
seen.
She was also very enthusiastic in organising Motorfest Runs for the AAA’s contribution to the support events surrounding the
Bay to Birdwood Run. She did this originally with fellow member Trevor Shepherd then later with both Cynthia and myself.
When I was Club Captain, Betty regularly helped us put lolly packs and presents together for our Christmas in July Runs as
well as organising a Club Run during the year.
She did this while working full time at a Doctors Surgery while also doing the books for four surgeries with multiple Doctors.
Betty was a regular attendee of our Club Runs but also many invitation events like the PADARC rallies at Port Pirie and the
Kernewek Lowender at Kadina, plus the Old Fashioned Picnic Day at Strathalbyn and Federation runs all in her 1932 Chevy.
In later years she found the Chev. too hard to drive so it was sold to a good home and replaced by a 1958 Wolsley1500 which
she bought from another Club Member, George Darwin. One memorable trip is this vehicle was the South East Saunter or-
ganised by the Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs SA Inc. which was 10 days of meeting the many Clubs in the South East
of South Australia. Her navigator was Cynthia’s Mother, Corral Thiselton who was in her eighties. Cynthia and I accompanied
them in the T’Bird; we both left later due to work commitments and met up with the rally at Mount Gambier on the Saturday.
Whenever we saw Betty she always enquired “How’s my navigator going”.
Betty always remembered that as one of the best events she had done and made many people laugh with her famous line at
a comfort stop by says, “Must go and point Priscilla at the porcelain”.
Betty was a member of the AAA with her husband Bob Pflaum pass away, but continued on as a member in her own right and
always said it saved her, having the camaraderie of the Club’s Members with similar interests, plus her time on the various
Committees.
Betty will be sadly missed by her family, but also by Cynthia, Renee and myself and many AAA Club members who were her
friends.
She was a very lovely, caring “Lady” and the world is poorer with her passing

CHANGES TO PLANNING OUR CLUB RUNS
As we migrate through the constantly changing dynamics of Covid-19 it has become clear that the Club needs to update the
way we plan our runs.
Both the monthly runs and the weekday runs will now need to have more details presented ahead of the run to the run’s co-
ordinator.
A simple change in the weather forecast for the June Weekday Run demonstrates the need for this. On the day on-which the
run was planned to be held the weather forecast was simply abysmal. There was nothing for it but to move the date at very
short notice. Easy you say? Not really when there is no record of who was planning to attend. Emails only capture 85% of our
members.
The end result was to email all members and then for the run co-ordinators to actually attend the Glandore facility on a very
stormy day to advise any other attendees.
Time to start recording the proposed run attendees!
The committee has discussed this and moving forward the names for run attendees and their mobile phone contact details
will be recorded and presented to the run co-ordinator. A folder for the runs will be circulated at the meeting for these details
to be collected. Members wishing to do the run but not able to attend the meeting should register their interest with the run
co-ordinator as detailed in the magazine.
This is expected to help manage any late notice change that may be forced upon the run co-ordinator who can then can most
advise the members planning to attend the run.
AAA CHRISTMAS IN JUNE SUNDAY 20TH JUNE FLAFSTAFF HOTEL
Having had a cold and wet week Sunday 20th June was a nice and bright day with no rain and no wind. Perfect for a run down the M2 South Road to The Flagstaff Hotel. From Golden Grove I joined the Port River Expressway behind Mawson Lakes and then veered onto the new South Road Motorway at Wingfield. A nice cruise at about 85kmh all the way to Regency Road then to Torrens River with little traffic. There the now usual bottleneck started through to the Anzac Highway Gallipoli underpass. Arriving right on time at the Hotel after a nice 1 hour drive I joined the other members in the dining room. About 40 attendees I think. A reasonably extensive menu to chose from and prompt order service. The pub was reasonably busy...steady was the staff description...but members meals seemed to arrive reasonably promptly. Everyone present was enjoying a good chin-wag as well as a nice cool drink while their meal orders were prepared. I circulated around all the tables after finishing my meal and everyone I spoke to was very happy. A good meal with good company at a nice venue would be a fair summary. I would certainly revisit this pleasant and efficient venue with a group. Well done to Graham for putting this together. Shane Conry

Part 2 My 1957 HOLDEN FE SEDAN RESTORATION JOURNEY
Now that I had the Holden running, I needed to find out if I could drive it to see what if anything was good or bad.
I’m a great one to always see the worst scenario that may occur. As I had the car at my brother’s workshop which has a rea-
sonable amount land attached to it, I was able to have a bit of a drive around enough to be able to change gears from first to
second.
Before this I lifted the Holden up on a hoist to check to fuel tank to see if it could be filled with petrol. After a full under car
inspection, I could see this car was in reasonable condition rust wise as there was very little indication of any rust visible which
is a big plus.
Getting back to the fuel tank, it looked in really good condition for its age, especially remembering this old girl hadn’t been
driven and possibly not started since 1968 as the old rego sticker (those ones you had to fit to the front glass with water, which
is still attached to the windscreen) showed. As I said the tank looked good from the outside, but was the inside like, no time
like the present to find out I thought, with the 7\16 in spanner in hand I removed the drain plug, not really expecting any fluid
to come out, but to my surprise a small amount of really thick dark red fuel that believe me smelt like the old super fuel and
took me back to a time when petrol was petrol came out. After flushing out the tank and pressure testing, I was confident I
could put petrol in it.
Off the hoist and with around 20 litres in the tank turning her over and hearing the Holden six running under her own power
was a great feeling until petrol started spraying out the fuel pump. No big surprise, hell something had to give, so before a little
drive, refit a new gasket set though the pump refit to motor check fuel lines, no fuel filter on these cars, fingers crossed and
away she started again, no petrol smell or spray from pump just a full glass bowl of petrol, great.
Now let’s see if she will drive. In goes the clutch ( now I must mention by this time the brakes had been overhauled, both brake
and clutch cylinders replaced refilled with new fluid and bled) into first gear and lift off the left foot and bugger me dead there
is that good or I should say bad old whining sound from the thrust bearing, never mind remove the gearbox another day I
wanted to give her a go, off we went first into second that whine again and she keep going until I ran out off driveway, into
reverse turn around and off again this time a little more gas back wheels spinning I was on smooth concrete remember, a few
splutters from the carby kangaroo hops from the backend then into second again, it was a really good feeling this old Holden
was still a runner, a good way to finish off the day.
The next day was a day to go right over the old girl to see what rust was hidden under floor mats, inside door frames and any-
where else these Holden’s rusted. After removing the rest of the interior and the door trims the rust that was found was two
small holes no bigger than a 20- cent coin at the front were water was coming in past the front windscreen rubber and drop-
ping down on to the floor under the interior mat, the rust hadn’t gone through the floor but was very close to as was indicated
when I pushed a screwdriver through the rust build up. The other places were the front two doors and a small hole again the
size of a 20 cent cion in the engine bay on one of the Y frame uprights on the firewall. The real bad rust on this Holden was
very typical for these cars, the front mudguards behind the headlights, the big surprise was there wasn’t any bad or heavy rust
around the back wheel arch, sill panels, around the two windscreens, back doors and in the boot.
As I said before the paint work was tired, really tired especially after giving the car a wash. The roof, bonnet and front valance
panel were badly affected with surface rust that they had a brown tinge to them. But you what I wanted to keep this patina,
knowing that these panels needed to be replaced or at worst repaired, I knew this was going to hard to do, but I really didn’t
think it was going to be that hard, this was not to be as time will tell in chapters to come.
The fun begins in chapter 3.
