Dear Parents and Students

RETREATS AT LORETO

As I prepare for our annual Loreto Principal’s Retreat, this year being held here in Queensland, I offer this reflec on prepared by Mr Kieran Donnelly – Deputy Principal Religion.

The Loreto College Retreat Programme is an integral component of the Religious Educa on provided by the College. In each year level the retreat programme focuses upon the areas of self, others and God. These are the three focal points around which each Retreat is designed. On each occasion a student has the opportunity to deepen her rela onship with God. The Retreat’s par cular experiences of community, prayer, liturgy, reflec on and engagement with crea on are designed to draw students into an awareness of themselves and others as spiritual people longing for God. The Retreat aims to lead students into a deeper understanding of, and thanksgiving for, themselves as God’s crea on, others made in God’s image and God who is love.

Lord Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace

Where there is hate that I may bring love,

Where there is offence that I may bring pardon,

Where there is discord that I may bring union,

Where there is error that I may bring truth,

Where there is doubt that I may bring faith,

Where there is despair that I may bring hope,

Where there is darkness that I may bring light,

Where there is sadness that I may bring joy.

O Master, make us not so much to be consoled

as to console; not so much to be loved as to love;

not so much to be understood as to understand;

for it is in giving that one receives; it is in

self‐forge ulness that one finds oneself; it is in pardoning

that one is pardoned; and it is in dying that one finds eternal life.

All students par cipate in the College retreat programme given that;

“The role of the Catholic school in faith forma on is to nurture both those who are already ac vely engaged with a faith tradi on and those who are yet to engage in a journey of explicit, ac ve faith.” (Guidelines for the Religious Life of the School. Archdiocese of Brisbane 2008 p22)

Already this year the Year Twelve students have experienced a three day, two night retreat. Year Eight students have par cipated in a single day retreat, conducted on a homeroom basis by their Religion teacher at the school. Early next term Year Eleven students will engage in a two day, overnight retreat.

Currently the Loreto Principals are gathered on retreat and at the commencement of next term the College staff will spend their Retreat Day reflec ng on ma ers of theology, spirituality and ecology under the guidance of Rev Dr Denis Edwards from Flinders University.

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2012. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12. Between March and June, all students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web based survey or a telephone call from the Government Statistician to complete the survey. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2013. For more information visit www.education.qld.gov.au/nextstep or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.

TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà At the beginning of Term, Year Nine Art Students viewed works at the APT7 exhibition at GOMA and QAG. Their focus was to explore the works by artists who explored and emphasized the use of pattern. The students are now completing ceramic form with surface design and patterns inspired by natural forms. Some of their work is presented below. Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator

`tÜç jtÜw VÉÇÇxvà @ VÉÉÜÑtÜÉÉ àÉ UtÄÄtÜtà? On Tuesday 5th March, Dana Bukarica, Grea Effeney, Nikki Foley, Emi Hall, Rachel Larkin and Eleanor Pratt and I left for Ballarat, Victoria via Melbourne. It was in Melbourne that we met with the Marryatville girls who were to travel with us by bus to Ballarat.

It was during this journey that our students bonded while wondering at their similarities and differences. Both groups arrived in Ballarat to meet their host sisters. The similarities and differ-ences became a common theme for all three schools and much was discovered during the four days of their Mary Ward Connect. Both Ms Carty (Coorparoo) and Mrs Spencer (Ballarat) chose wisely and accurately when they matched the students as sisters for the Ballarat Mary Ward Connect.

After our students chatted into the wee hours with their host sisters on that initial night, I met them the fol-lowing morning ready to take a tour of Loreto Ballarat, to attend classes with their host sisters and to make their presentation about Loreto Coorparoo to a Year 7 and a Year 10 class that afternoon. This was very successful and I was justly proud of our students.

On Thursday morning, we were privileged to attend the Liturgy held to inaugurate the Provincial Archives housed in the old Kindergarten building on the site of Loreto Balla-

rat. As the opening was to be held during Mary Ward Connect Week, students from each of six Loreto schools were able to assemble at this time. The schools represented were Coorparoo, Ballarat, Marryatville, Normanhurst, Kirribilli and Toorak. Our Emi Hall was one of the gift bearers carrying in a silk banner with her counterparts. For me, it was a chance to reconnect with Sr Deidre Browne, Sr Therese Lechte, Sr Mary Baulderstone, Sr Anne Byrne and Sr Margaret Mary Flynn.

Sovereign Hill was our next excursion with the girls taking coach rides, buying either one of the famous meat pies, vanilla slices or raspberry drops. They were amazed at the authenticity of this historical site and much fun was had by all.

On the day of our departure, we attended a final Liturgy with Ballarat, Marryatville and Coorparoo students in the magnificent chapel but all too soon, we were rushed off by taxi, bus and plane to return home to Brisbane.

I would like to extend my thanks to our students for making my job effortless as they were so very well behaved, always on time for each aspect of the tour and they were wonderful

ambassadors for Loreto Coorparoo. Well done, girls!

Mrs van den Brink - (Mary Ward Connect, Ballarat, 2013).

Congratulations To the String Quartet of Fiona McMahon, Vania So, Caitlin Hunter and Maddie Taylor (led by ensemble director Lucy Sullivan) who performed on Sunday in the gardens of St James Church, Coorparoo on the special occasion of the centenary celebration of the founding of the church. There were several clergy in attendance including his Grace, Most Rev Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane. The Quartet was well received by all present and we were very proud of the girls!

Rehearsals During Exam Block Many rehearsals will be cancelled over the course of the next week to allow students preparation time for their academic exams. Could all music students and parents please carefully check the Rehearsal Schedule attached to this newsletter to see which rehearsals are cancelled and which are still running? If a rehearsal is on, then all members of the group are expected to attend.

Autumn Concerts Information All Loreto ensembles (except the newly formed Year 8 brass ensemble) will perform at one of these events on Friday 19 April or Friday 26 April. These two dates form our first major performance commitments for the year and it is an expectation of membership in any school music group that ALL students involved with one of the ensembles attend for their concert. Concerts run from 6 pm to 9 pm and students are expected to stay for the duration of the event – participating as an audience member when not on stage. If this expectation causes any difficulties, then it is vital that parents contact the Coordinator of Music, Mr Ben Langford, either by phone or email urgently to negotiate a solution.

As previously advertised in calendars and newsletters, concert dates are:

Autumn Concert One Friday 19 April (Jazz Ensemble, Concert Bands 1 and 2, Guitar Ensembles 1 and 2, Junior and Senior Choirs, String Ensemble).

Autumn Concert Two Friday 26 April (Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Flute Ensembles 1 and 2, Clarinet Ensemble, Percussion Ensembles 1 and 2, String Quartet, Chorale, Symphony Orchestra).

Symphony Orchestra As highlighted in the last newsletter, the Symphony Orchestra will now perform at the second of our two concerts on Friday 26 April instead of the first concert as originally advertised. This change has been made due to the fact that Villanova students do not return from holidays until Tuesday 16 April and the orchestra will not therefore have rehearsed since mid-March. If this change causes difficulties, please contact Mr Langford at the Music Office as soon as possible.

Loreto Music Festival The final day for entries to the Loreto Music Festival was last Friday. If you have forgotten to return your entry forms, then please do so asap. Some sections are not completely full and therefore we may accept a small number of late entries.

Music Tour On Thursday of last week, the Music Department sent home a letter to all members of the Jazz Ensemble with a proposal regarding a Music Tour to the Central Queensland University School’s Jazz Festival. Parents should have received this letter on either Friday or Monday. If you did not, please contact Mrs Karen Carr at the Music Office urgently. Ben Langford - Director of Music

fà i|ÇvxÇà wx ctâÄ axãá We have so many Easter eggs that we have been able to donate some of them to St Vinnies at Inala . We thank the Loreto Community for such a generous response. No more eggs, please. Many students have offered to deliver these eggs which they have wrapped in shiny, coloured cellophane, complete with a ribbon. Our thanks to the nine members who spent half of last Friday at the St Vincent de Paul Family Support Centre at Inala. They were able to learn first-hand about the work of St Vinnies from the Coordinator and other personnel. One of our Executive members, Samantha Crawford, presented the Centre with a $400 cheque to assist families that may be struggling to pay bills or put food on the table. The other members were: Lucy Nielson, Gemma Hayes, Grea Effeney, Lauren Effeney, Maria Manicaros, Caitlin Guarrera, Jessica Balzano and Nichola Tracey. Well done, members! The Guess-the-Number of Eggs fund raiser has been ably run by members from younger grades. Thank you to those on roster. We hope all families experience the sense of spiritual renewal that Easter represents. Enjoy the break. Bill Kenny - Coordinator

g{x g{|Ç~xÜËá Zâ|wx àÉ U\Z \wxtá XåvâÜá|ÉÇ A reminder that The Thinker’s Guide to BIG Ideas Conference will be held on May 13th at St Laurence’s College. This conference is a unique opportunity for students to meet and listen to top academics speak on a wide range of challenging topics and is aimed at stimulating thought beyond the constraints of the curriculum.

The topics, “I think, therefore I am’, ‘Nanotechnology’, ‘The Self Image’, ‘Lateral Thinking’, and ‘The Big Debate – Free Will is an Illusion’ are delivered in a university style of learning, aimed to broaden students’ experience and develop connections between areas of study and the bigger picture.

This is an exciting opportunity for our girls who enjoy contemplating difficult but interesting intellectual concepts, that require thinking outside of the square.

Permission slips can be collected from Ms Hogan. Please note that the RSVP date for the conference is very soon, so forms have to be returned by the 22 March at the latest. Stephanie Hogan - Learning Enrichment Teacher

Results Round 5: Open A – LOR 2 def SRC 1, (25-15, 25-8, 22-25) The first two sets of the game against St Rita's College was the best volleyball that the Open A team has played all season. Even though there was a small concentration lapse in the final set it was an excellent 2-1 win. Open B - MMK 2 def LOR 1, (25-20, 25-14, 12-15) Girls went down this week 2-1, struggling with the outdoor courts and wind. Despite the uncontrollable circumstances, they played very well. Outstanding serves by Madison Brown. Let’s bring on the next two weeks girls. Junior A – MSM 3 def LOR 0, (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) The junior A volleyball team had another unlucky 3-0 loss to Mount St Michael’s this week. Despite the loss, it was on no level a reflection of the way they played. In the past three weeks, the entire team has continued to develop and the improvement in their style of '3 touch volleyball' is evident and will put them in good stead in future games and years. Krystal played one of her strongest games to date this week however, it was a team performance of which all girls should be proud of. Junior B – LOR 2 def MSM 1, (25-20, 25-18, 12-15) Excellent game by the Junior B team today, defeating Mt St Michael’s, 2-1! The girls played their best and demonstrated improved skill. Nikki Foley and Kasey Hiscock’s serving was on track, Brittany Ryan’s passing was excellent and the team’s defence was great. Well done, girls. Let’s keep it up in Round 6. Junior C – LOR 2 def SRC 1, (25-19, 23-25, 25-17) Another win for our Junior C team, defeating St Rita’s College 2 sets to one. It was a fantastic game to watch. All players showed tremendous spirit and determination, winning the third set after trailing by eight points. A special mention to Sophie Hinchliffe and Claire Lyons for maintaining composure when serving for numerous critical points. Well done, girls! Junior D – LOR 3 def MTA 0, (25-4, 25-14, 25-14) Last Wednesday the Junior D volleyball team continued their winning streak by defeating Mt Alvernia in convincing fashion. The team performed well and implemented what has been learnt over the last few weeks at training which is a credit to the girls. They look forward now to taking on All Hallows'. Notable Performances: Nicole Kulczyk and Georgia Fuller. Junior E – LOR 3 def MSM 0, (25-16, 25-17, 25-19) This game was a breakthrough for this team, defeating Mt St Michael’s 3-0. The girls are consistently backing each other up and are seeing the value and power that 3-hit volleyball has! Tiaan Smith is to be commended for her all around game play, including a rally winning block in the first set! She consistently sets the ball beautifully - as if she has all the time in the world! I look forward to trialling the front court setting system in at least the first set of our next game, against our top of the table equals, All Hallows’ School. Junior F – LOR 3 def SRC 0, (25-24, 25-7, 25-12) The Junior F team had a great win this week against St Rita’s winning all three sets. Showing tremendous improvement in hitting and defence all players worked together to set up some good returns and rallies. Outstanding serving from Grace Dwyer and good front court work from Audrey McCosker and Rachael Dalton helped score another win for the team!

Interhouse Cross Country The Inter-house Cross Country will be held on Wednesday 27 March 2013 at Whites Hill Reserve, Boundary St, COORPAROO. The students will be transported by bus to the venue and return at approximately 11.30am. A map of the course will be displayed on every Home Room noticeboard. Every student is encouraged to complete this course whether it is by running or walking. It will be a 3 kilometre course on the ovals and in the bushland. The House Captains and Representatives are looking forward to having their teams come together and compete in a very spirited manner. If a student is unable to complete the course a note must be given to Mrs Stevens or to Mrs Wilkinson in the Sports Office explaining the reason for your daughter’s non-participation. Students are to wear their school sports uniform and cap to school and bring a shirt in their house colour to compete in. All students need to wear lace up running shoes. It is recommended that all students bring a water bottle. If there is rain forecast for Wednesday morning, all students please bring along your books and laptops for all lessons in case the event is called off in the morning.

Cross Country Training The Cross Country Squad will be selected from the Inter-House Cross Country carnival. A meeting will be arranged directly after the carnival to provide information booklets including school holiday training. All students must return their permission slips in the first week of Term 2 regarding attendance at meets.

Accoras - Stop. Think. Do Program Accoras is a not-for-profit organisation which works to provide health and wellbeing programs to families within our community. We are running a number of Triple P: Positive Parenting Program groups and Stop. Think. Do. children's social skills groups in Term Two, in Salisbury, Wavell Heights and Capalaba. About the Stop. Think. Do. Program: Stop. Think. Do. is a social skills program designed to empower young children by teaching them to develop self-control, decision making, responsibility, leadership and friendship-making skills. The program aims to improve children's social and friendship abilities, develop cooperative classrooms, schools and homes, and support children to develop strong emotional intelligence and self-esteem. Groups are being hosted at reduced prices (only $150 per child, plus $100 per additional child from the same family). The usual cost for this program is $350 per child, but we have sourced funding to subsidise the cost to ensure as many families as possible have access. This cost includes GST, all seven weeks of the group, a scrapbook and all materials and resources used in the sessions. lxtÜ DC `tÜ|áà WtÇv|Çz Year 10 students who nominated to participate in Marist Dancing will begin lessons starting in Week Two of next term. The students have many questions about the expected dress standard and this will be addressed at school next term.

I am in need of three or four more students to act as reserves for this event, filling in for students when they are ill. The four lessons and final dance are held on Tuesday evenings (April 23 and 30, May 7, 14 and 21) from 6.30- 9.30 including bus travel to and from the venue. The final dance will see students arrive back at Loreto by 10.30pm.There is no cost for students who volunteer to fill in and these students can nominate the dates they are available. I would welcome any more volunteers for these positions. Permission letters are available from Ms Davidson.
