With pre-assembled collar packs and half-yokes/yoke sections the complexity and the time to carry out the collar and yoke assembly are practically the same.

Coil fabrication time is the same for 1 m and 2 m

Magnet with 1 m coils

Cable UL 135 m Easier potting (tooling

qualification?) Faster cool-down Lower L Fine for assessing

quench performance Gives qualitative idea of

PC, ISCC, etc.

No magnetic straight section (accelerator quality?)

Very short coil straight section (layer-jump)

Tooling modifications Curing and welding press

for 2 m coils Need new shells Quench protection

studies? n hours of DO work

Magnet with 1.8 m coils

Uniform 2D field in the straight section

Tooling commissioned Magnet parts in stock /

in fabrication No extra DO effort

required Better suited for

protection studies Better precision for PC,

dynamic effects, etc.

Cable UL 220 m Longer cooldown Higher L

Shortening the model magnet coil length from 1.8 m to 1 m would require 85 m shorter cable unit length

Assembly process would be practically the same At CERN curing and welding press would need to be

reconfigured Coil fabrication tooling would need to be modified or

new part madeo Mandrel, base plates, ..o Requires DO efforto Schedule and cost impact

We are fully geared up for 1.8 m coil production. Training test would be somewhat faster with shorter

recovery time after each quench There would not be any magnetic straight section. Very limited time to demonstrate the accelerator

quality before the scale-up
