Mydearparishfamily, God may write straight with crooked lines and frequently speak inwhispers, but for those with eyes to see and ears to hear, his message getsthrough. One evening a couple of weeks ago as I was scrolling aroundFORMED.ORG looking for something to watch, I came across two titles thatcaughtmyattention: An Ordinary MartyrandAngel in the Waters. Bothturnedout to be interesting and inspiring, the irst a documentary about Fr. StanleyRother, an Oklahoma farmboywho grewup to be a priest, amissionary inGuatemala, and a martyr; the second a lovely story about a child’s life in thewombandherencounterwithherguardianangel. The very next morning, when I checked my email and clicked onHELENADAILEY.COM, there was an article by Edward Monti about hisencounters with angels; another about Paul Nagai, a Japanese survivor ofNagasakiduringWWII,aChristian,anM.D.,andlikeFr.Rotheranamazingman;therewasa beautifulessaybyHaleyStewart called “MyBody,MyChildren’sFirstHome;andanotheraboutahugepro‐lifeeventthattookplacerecently inTimesSquare,NYCatwhichasonogramofababyinthewombwasprojectedonalargescreenwhilemorethantenthousandpeoplelookedon. THOUGHTS ON MARY FROM MAGNIFICAT
While the world looks to eliminate sickness and suffering, these provide the very place where healing is offered and victory achieved. It is the gentle Mother in the Pieta’ who teaches us where healing is found as she gathers her crucified Son in her arms. The one who brought sight to the blind, sound to the deaf, and sudden healing for the sick is offered a quiet moment in which his body rests in the gentle embrace of his Mother’s arms. For it is when we lean into our heavenly Mother’s arms that we are offered our heavenly Father’s healing presence. It is enfolded in Mary’s awaiting arms that I have found rest and dis-covered the still waters of healing. --Jennifer Hubbard
After the baptism of one of our daughters, my husband, filled with wonder, remarked that the day felt like our wedding day. That simple joy was the starting point of a life-long hope for the companionship of an eternal love for our child, as for ourselves on our wedding day. A friend recently confided that ever since her now college-age daughter left the Church, “that child has been on my heart twenty-four hours a day.” What a mystery that such Spirit-filled joy should be met later by sadness and consternation, despite all of our ardent prayers and efforts! “But the cross comes before the crown, and tomorrow is a Monday morning” (C.S. Lewis)—a Monday of Joyful Mysteries. While Mary and Joseph were desperately seeking to bring Jesus back to their caravan, all the while he was with his Father. This same Father, with his Son, never leaves the side of those presented to him, no matter how far they may be from the Temple. For this, there is always reason for our continued joy and hope. --Suzanne Tanzi
Jennifer Hubbard lost her youngest child in the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She writes a regular column in Magnificat. Suzanne Tanzi is the mother of five and works at Theological College in Washington, D.C. Besides all the prayers and readings for each of the month’s Masses, Magnificat is filled with daily reflections on the readings and beautiful, thought-provoking page-long essays, from two of which the quotes above were excerpted. To subscribe to Magnificat, go to www.magnificat.com.

Monday is Memorial Day and we would like to recognize and show our appreciation to all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country
and the freedoms we enjoy. We would like to ask you to take a moment tomorrow to pray for those that have served and are serving our nation. Many families have lost loved ones, and our military men and women that have survived will face countless struggles and challenges for the rest of their lives. On Monday when we honor and celebrate their service and sacrifice, let us also remember the once homeless veterans, who because of your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, have been helped through our ministries and programs like Catholic Charities Project Veterans’ Independence. Thank you for your support! You make a difference in the lives of so many through your prayers and generosity!

Confession and Its Seal of Secrecy is Under Attack
A new bill in California seeks to remove "penitential communications" - the most sacred relationship between clergy and penitent in a for-mal confession - from current law. If the CA legislature enacts this bill, Catholic priests, bound by Canon Law not to disclose the contents of a confession, could face criminal prosecution and imprisonment for refusing to comply. Catholics believe that confession is between the penitent and Christ with the priest representing Christ and able to talk to, advise, counsel, or simply listen to the person. The penalty for any priest who divulges anything heard in confession is automatic excommunication. Since 2003, the states that have tried to force clergy to violate the seal of confession are Mary-land, Kentucky, Nevada, Florida, New Hamp-shire, and Louisiana. All introduced bills were eventually rejected and did not pass into law.

A little humor from Father Fink A wife was furious at her husband for buying an expensive boat. To calm her down he told her she could name the boat. She agreed. That weekend when he went down to the dock to take the boat out for a spin, he saw the new name in big red letters across the back of the boat: FOR SALE
