has been fantastic and he’s been to most of the races at the water-front, cheering on ETNZ.While Andrew has been cheering on the team from the waterfront, another former Nelson man, Chris Irwin, was on his yacht in San Francisco harbour where he was part of the spectator fleet. He says watching the massive AC72 catamarans speed by was incredible and that there were so many boats watching the ac-tion that it felt like you could hop across the harbour “from one yacht to the next”.The two Nelson men are some of the thousands of New Zealand-ers who are on the California

coast to watch the America’s Cup. Emirates’ Team New Zealand has a 8-0 lead in the finals series over holders Ora-cle Team USA and needs two more race wins to claim back the Auld Mug.Andrew who has been teaching at the city’s international school says the fact that he was there while the cup was on was a co-incidence but he is a big Amer-ica’s Cup fan and is thrilled to be able to be a part of it. He says

the only New Zealanders he met in his first three months in the city were from Team New Zealand and being on the shore was a special mo-ment with New Zealand flags everywhere.“It’s been really

cool to be a part of and just see-ing all the New Zealanders and all the support, it’s incredible.”He says many locals were backing a kiwi win, distancing themselves from Larry Ellison and keen to support the proud kiwi sailors

and their supporters. “There are a lot of locals that are very into it. It’s big in the city because it’s advertised heavily in the city. When they find out I’m a New Zealander they come up and are almost apologetic, saying ‘we are American but we’re backing New Zealand.’ There is enthusiasm for the cup and if they’re not enthu-siastic about the American team then they’re enthusiastic about us winning it,” he says.Chris, who has worked in Sili-con Valley since 1998, sails often in the harbour and says it was special to be able to watch Team New Zealand on water he is so familiar with. “It’s been really great to watch. Spectacular.”

“It sounds fair enough. They are just protecting their busi-ness from theft. They can’t af-ford to lose money, especially nowadays.”

Jessica Mills, Nelson.

“I don’t want to prepay because I always fill my car up. It would be very inconvenient so I’d go elsewhere.”

Barry Hunt, Nelson.

“I think it is a really good idea. A lot of petrol theft has been going on lately.”

Kristoff Ford, Nelson.

“I probably wouldn’t care, they should have made it prepay from the start.”

Stolen petrol forces 24 hour pre pay policy

A new type of fuel theft has forced the owners of two local petrol stations into a new pre pay policy.John and Maureen Gifkins own Mobil Tahuanui and Mo-bil Stoke and introduced the 24 hour pre pay policy about a month ago. They say it was in response to some custom-ers who would put petrol in their cars and then come in to pay, knowing their eftpos cards would decline. John says they do that because once they “attempt” to pay it’s no longer seen as a fuel theft but a civil matter, so police don’t get involved. That leaves him trying to get his money back and he says it’s been hap-pening more and more recently so they’ve had to act.“Pre pay happens up north in the big cities and I believe it’s happening down south as well in Christchurch and other places. We didn’t want to be the first ones in Nelson to do it but we need to make a living, that’s what it’s all about.”Police confirmed stolen petrol is an issue but don’t have fig-ures because a lot of stations

deal with it themselves.John says enough is enough.“It leaves us out of pocket and we can’t keep going like that or we won’t be able to pay our bills or pay our staff. It’s like any business.”The new policy means that cus-tomers drive up and pay for the petrol inside before pumping it into their cars. Once the petrol is in they simply drive off.Maureen says the policy did have an impact on their staff when it was first introduced as some customers became abusive but it has been getting much better as people get used to the policy. “Initially we took a bit of verbal from people that were not happy about it or un-sure about it. But it’s getting

better and now people under-stand why.”They say they expect other ser-vice stations in Nelson to follow suit but aren’t concerned if they do or not. “This isn’t about an-yone else, this is what we need to do for our business. It hasn’t been easy but we’re sticking to our guns on this, we need to.”John wouldn’t say how much money is owed to the company from theft, or those unable to pay, but says he is successful in chasing some of the money himself, but not enough to car-ry on as he was.“People that owe us money will still come in to buy petrol and when we hit them up about it they say ‘na, it was my friend in my car’. What can we do?”

Mobil in Tahunanui is one of two petrol stations that have in-troduced a 24 hour pre pay policy to stop fuel theft.

Waterfront plans unveiledThe first plans for a potential water-front development on council-owned land were unveiled on Friday night and mayor Aldo Miccio says it will fill in the missing link between the city and Tahu-nanui beach.Around 150 people gathered in the Theatre Royal to see the plans and hear a presentation from its architects about the development on land around the Reliance Engineering building and the Custom House Hotel.Aldo – who hosted the event with coun-cillor Pete Rainey – says the plans show room for retail space and hospitality ven-ues with a walking cycleway running through it. He says it could connect with the proposed walk-ing cycle promenade on Rocks Rd and the walking cycleway from Rutherford Park, which will be built up to the Reli-ance building. “It’s the missing link between the beach and the city and if it goes ahead it will provide a cycle walkway from the city to the beach which is what the city needs.”The plans and design will to go out for tender, with the council hoping a de-veloper will come in and take over the project, meaning the cost to ratepayers would be zero.“Developers will put in a

proposal about what they would like to do with the land and the price they’d be willing to pay so the cost to ratepayers is nothing. We bought the Reliance Engi-neering building as a strategic purchase so this is an exit strategy so the council can get its money back.”Plans also include 52 extra car parks in the area. The finer details and how flexible it

would like to be with developers will need to be finalised by the next council. Councillor Pete Rainey says they have consulted with Port Nelson who have said they will be looking at slight bound-ary adjustments which would enable greater access to the sites and the water, as well as the potential for sympathetic development of the historic shed 1 in the future.

Refuge: We really need this moneyA fundraising effort by the Car Company is vital to the survival of the women’s and children’s refuge, says its manager Trudie Brand. For the month of September, the Car Company is taking to the streets to raise money for the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge. On September 27 they will host a quiz evening at the Suburban Club, with all proceeds going to the Nelson refuge. It’s the second year the Nelson business has got in behind the cause, last year raising $18,000.Trudie says the refuge runs on a shoestring budget and the money raised is used to help keep the service alive. “Without the money raised by the Car Company we wouldn’t be able to provide the service we do. If we didn’t have the money we’d be back where we were in the 70s and 80s. We wouldn’t have a community office, we’d rely solely on volunteers and our women and children wouldn’t be as safe.”So far there has been two street collections with another to be held at Sundial Square in Richmond tomorrow. There will

be a collection at the Tasman Makos game at Trafalgar Park on Sunday and another on Trafalgar St next Wednesday.Trudie says she’s grateful for the support of locals who have reached in their

pockets to donate.“This is an issue that affects everybody, every neighbourhood in Nelson is affected. Wealthy people, lower social economic communities, middle class people, everyone. It’s across the board, it’s everywhere so it’s great that people donate to help us continue to do our work. It means a lot to those we help,” she says.If you’d like to donate money to the refuge or an item to be auctioned at the quiz night, or would like to book a table at the quiz night on Friday, September 27, simply call Belinda Koloamatangi at the Car Company on 546 6550 ext. 7 or call 027 323 7105.

Take a pinch of nostalgia, a dollop of great memories and a scoop of hand-me-down directions from people all over the region and you’ve got the recipe for Richmond Mall’s cook book.More than 376 recipes were submitted to the cook book featuring the recipes of local families and with entries closed, mall manager Belinda de Clercq says it is starting to take shape.“We were blown away by how

many people submitted recipes to the cook book. Every single day there would be more recipes dropped into the box.”From the traditional to the conventional, all recipes were taken into consideration when choosing the best ones for the book says Belinda and it was no easy task. “There were amazing recipes handed in, some came with photos featuring 1940s hairstyles, some were submitted

by children in their own writing. There were so many amazing recipes.”The winners for each category, mains, deserts, baking, children, Christmas and jams/preserves and more will be contacted this week. The cookbook will be distributed free to every home in Nelson and each of the recipes will also feature on the Richmond Mall website during October.

Nelson has recorded the lowest number of births in five years according to new figures re-leased by Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. There were 875 babies born in Nelson in the year ending 2012, down on the 1011 the year be-fore, contributing to the lowest number of births for the top of the south since 2008. The low birth rate for the region hasn’t come as a surprise to the

local Plunket office, whose fig-ures are also lower than nor-mal. Nelson Marlborough area manager Sonya Briggs says they were down 136 babies last year and the downward trend looks set to continue. Just 130 babies were born between July 1 and August 16, compared with 160

at the same time last year. “We go through a cycle though. Five years ago we went through a boom which was unusual and now we seem to be levelling back out.”She says the low number of births doesn’t affect Plunket Nurses who are “busier than ever” offering additional sup-port services to local families.More details on the DHB stats on page 7.

24 hour gym poised to open in cityA new gym, boasting 24 hour ac-cess and no membership con-tracts, is due to open in Nelson next month say the local owners.David Weston says Snap Fitness will open in Gloucester St in Oc-tober but the international fran-chisee began its membership drive in Nelson yesterday. He says there are a group of own-ers that will run the Nelson gym with the hope of opening another in Richmond next year.He says Snap is an international brand with gyms all over the world and its success is in its ease of use.Members are given swipe cards which allows them to access the gym any time of day or night and no contracts mean members just need to give 30 days’ notice to give up their membership.David says work is underway at the new premises, next to United Video, and he’s excited about its opening. “We know Snap works because there’s another 30-odd in New

Zealand that work well and thou-sands more around the world. We also own a Snap in Timaru and we’ve seen the benefits first hand,” he says.David says they’ve already had a lot of interest from locals and believes there will be quite a few people who don’t attend gyms who will come “out of the woodwork”.He says another huge benefit of the gym is that members can use their swipe card to access any of the Snap gyms around the world. “Which is great for those that trav-el a lot.”The new gym is due to open mid-October.

It’s been a busy year for Nelson Hospital with more than 25,300 people showing up for emergency treatment alone.Operation numbers are also on the rise with more elective surgeries performed at the hospital in 2012 compared to the previous year.Statistics from the past 12 months, released to Nelson Weekly last week, suggest things aren’t going to slow down any time soon either, with admissions into the hospital up on 2011 by 701, with a total of 18,452 people checking in.The past year included a higher number of procedures performed in theatre, with an average of 28 operations performed at the hospital each day during the year. While cataract procedures were down, more people left the hospital with new hips, knees and shoulders, with the number of replacements carried out up by 33 to 377.The only department to catch a break during 2012 was the maternity ward, who saw a decrease in the number of births

recorded, with just 875 babies born at the hospital – a number that contributed to the lowest ever amount of births for the top of the south in five years.Nelson Marlborough district health board chief executive Chris Fleming says over the last year the DHB has concentrated

on getting all patients seen within five months for both outpatient app oi nt m e nt s and elective surgery while keeping costs within budget.

“[But] during the year we increased the number of outpatient appointments, procedures in our theatre, elective admissions and the total number of admissions.” The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board emergency departments – based in Nelson and Blenheim – treated 46,690 people versus 46,112 in 2011, a 578 person increase.

The majority of the increase in traffic occured in Blenheim but there were still rising numbers in Nelson. Chris says the DHB is working with GPs, Primary Health Organisations and St John to find community solutions to reverse the trend and to educate people about

the appropriate use of the emergency department.“Emergency departments should be for seriously ill or seriously injured people, all other conditions can be treated in GP practices and after hours medical centres,” he says.

A team of 25 Department of Conserva-tion workers will search every property in the Nelson region for a second time, as it intensifies the strike against the great white butterfly.DOC has set up a dedicated team to car-ry out concentrated searches of gardens to look for and remove the pest butterfly caterpillars and eggs because it poses a major threat to home and commercial brassica crops and endangered native cresses.Project manager Bruce Vander Lee says knocking back the pest butterfly’s breeding spikes in spring and autumn was critical to achieving its eradication, which is why another 20 people had joined the team after a quiet winter. “We put in an intensive effort against a great white butterfly in the autumn breeding spurt, searching out and removing in-festations and we are hoping as a result there will be fewer butterflies to set off its spring breeding burst,” he says. “But that will be determined in how many infesta-tions our field staff find and the public report to us in coming weeks. With many Nelson and Tasman resi-dents out in their gardens, tending to plants at this time of the year, Bruce is asking them to keep watch for the cat-erpillars and eggs, and says leaves that

are being rapidly chewed away on plants are a usual telltale sign they are being at-tacked by the mob-feeding caterpillars. “We have had great support from the Nelson community so far and working together we have a chance of clearing this pest from our region and stopping it becoming a permanent, widespread ma-jor pest in New Zealand.”Garden searches by the eradication team this spring are initially focussed on Nel-son city where most infestations occur,

however, infestations were also found in Richmond last summer.DOC launched the great white butterfly eradication programme in November last year. Agencies supporting it include MPI, Nelson City Council, Tasman Dis-trict Council and Vegetables NZ.The project has carried out more than 28,000 garden searches since it started and 850 butterfly infestations have been found and removed since it was first dis-covered in a Nelson city garden in 2010.

A busy week for council candidatesWith voting papers due in residents’ letter box-es this Friday, candidates standing for council and the mayor’s office will have to face the mu-sic at several “meet the candidate” events. There have already been some, the latest a “meet the female candidate’ evening held by the Nelson Council of Women Nelson Branch last week and the “market day” event held at the Nelson Suburban Club last weekend.Tonight the Nelson Residents Association is hosting a meet the candidate evening at the Trafalgar Centre. Each candidate will have two minutes on the podium to address the public, followed by questions from the audience. All Nelson ratepayers are invited to attend. On Thursday night, Grey Power is hosting a meet the candidate forum at the Suburban Club from 7pm. Attendees must be Grey Power members and will need to bring their cards to get in the door.Next Monday, September 23, Sport Tasman is hosting a mayoral debate at Sports House at Saxton Field, dubbed “thought on sport”.Voting opens for the election on Friday and closes on October 12. All ratepayers will have the opportunity to vote for the mayor and councillors they would like to see represent them over the next three years. But traditionally only about 50 per cent of peo-ple take the time to send their voting packs back.Secretary of the Nelson Residents Association, Ken Meredith, says the evenings have been successful in the past."We want people to be informed before voting in the elections on October 12. [Tonight] the public can hear the new applicants and those seeking re-election state their views. There will be opportunities to ask questions about rates, the neighbourhood and the city's future."President of Grey Power Nelson, Neville Male, says the meetings are a great way for people to get to know what the candidates are all about."Most ratepayers do not have a good knowledge of how well sitting councillors have performed and for new candidates it is equally perplexing. Hopefully coming along to one of these even-ing will help."

Boy recovering after he was hit by busA 7 year old boy is said to be recovering well after he was hit by a school bus last week.Police are investigating the incident at Atawhai Crescent and Sergeant Blair Hall said it appears the boy “shot out” in front of the bus, picking up students for Garin College.

Clifton Terrace School principal Rob Wemyss says he has visited the boy and he hopes to have him back at school soon. It is the second time a young student has been run over at the intersection in the past three years. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the council needs to act quickly to make sure

it doesn’t happen again by installing a pedestrian crossing so children can cross the road safely.“This is the second accident I’m aware of in recent times at this location and it’s important we ensure something like this or the previous incident does not occur again. It was very fortunate the incident

was not more serious and we need to act quickly now”.Rob says he fully supports moves to put in a new crossing. “It’s important that we improve the safety of all our students as they travel to and from school and we welcome this initiative for a pedestrian crossing.”

A cuppa for a memorable causeHaving a cuppa could help a worthy cause this week, with local cafes lending a hand to support Alzheimers Society Nelson.Cafes across the region will be donating 50 cents for every tea or coffee they sell in order to support the cause and lend a hand to the not for proft organisation. The event will coincide with World Alzheimers Awareness Day which is this Saturday and has been organised by the society as part of their annual awareness month. Alzheimers Society Nelson field worker and team manager, Heather Lackner, says the fundraiser has been organised to bring dementia into a public arena. A similar event held by supporters of the society last Wednesdsay was a huge success and she says it was a “great start” to their annual appeal. You can support Cuppa for a Cause by heading along to the Boathouse Cafe or Vanilla Cafe this Friday, or by visiting Cafe Affair, WOW Café or Crusoe’s on Saturday. All funds raised through ‘Cuppa for a Cause’ will be used locally to help the group provide support to those affected by dementia.

More than 1000 locals flocked to the Parent and Child Expo on Saturday for a chance to explore local products and talk to local experts in babies and children. This is the third annual Parent and Child Expo that has been held in Nelson, and the event has grown out of previous venues prompting this year’s to be held at the Trafalgar Centre for the first time.Organiser Prue Fothergill says she was pleased to fill the venue with huge crowds of expo goers who came through the doors steadily during the day. Feedback from the some of the 60 exhibitors she has spoken to has been extremely positive, with all impressed with the organisation and turnout.

Tuesday, September 3The Nelson Cancer Society are extremely happy at the generous donations they received for Daffodil Day this year. More than 200 collectors were out in force supporting the cause and society manager Linda Lucre says donations were more than on par with previous years. The official count is yet to be announced but she says this year they targeted industrial areas so people who normally don’t get a chance to donate had the opportunity to do so. As a result $900 was collected from just one Stoke based street on the day.

Tuesday, August 20While 14th birthday celebrations for Tahunanui business Hair Craft were ruined by a break in and the theft of scissors, hair straighteners and products totalling $4000, owner Dianne MacMorland has been blown away by the support shown to her by her loyal clients after appearing in the Nelson Weekly. Some brought in chocolates, wine, cards and for a laugh, a pair of gardening shears and sewing scissors.

Tuesday, August 20The cat left with three legs after being caught in a gin trap is now happily settled in to a new home after recovering from its injuries and leg amputation at the Nelson SPCA.

Tuesday, August 13The pig that was running amok in Richmond’s CBD has proven to be an elusive sow, who has no intention of giving up the wild life. John Bergman, animal control officer for the Tasman District Council told Nelson Weekly the sow lasted a few weeks in a stock pen at the pound, being fed bread, carrots and other vegetables before escaping into the bushes at Rabbit Island, where she hasn’t been spotted since.

Is there a swimming pool or spa pool where you live? Do you know your obligations under the Fencing of Swimming Pools legislation? This legislation is in place to protect children from drowning. Sadly it seems in Nelson that a large number of pools do not comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987, raising huge safety concerns. However, there are many issues that would be very quick and easy to fix in order to meet the requirements. Here are the main problems that have been discovered and how to fix them.1. Gates that don’t self close and latch from

150 mm - Most pool gates have springs or spring loaded hinges but they’re not working properly. Just increase the tension on the spring, add some lubricant and it should self close and latch again.

2. Fences with gaps greater than 100 mm - Adding a paling, a covering to a fence (such as shade cloth) or some landscaping rocks may be all that is needed to get rid of those gaps.

3. Trees and shrubs planted close to the pool barrier - If pruning is neglected the branches can become strong enough to climb on. You can’t have climbable objects closer than 1.2 metres to the outside of the pool fence so be careful where you plant and make sure you prune regularly.

Other issuesThese include doors from the house that lead to the pool area, spa pools without fencing and

backflow prevention. 1. Doors on to pool areas must self close and

latch from 150 mm – You either need to install self closing and latching devices or if that won’t work, apply for an exemption to the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 or install a compliant barrier between the house and pool.

2. Unfenced spa pools - Spa pools are bound by the same legislation as swimming pools and must have compliant fencing or have an exemption to the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987.

3. Lack of backflow preventers - When a pool is filled by a tap with a hose attached, that tap must have a backflow preventer fitted to reduce risk of contaminating the water supply in case of a pressure drop. These are readily available from hardware, plumbing and some pool supply stores.

Take responsibilityNot taking swimming pool fencing seriously can have deadly consequences. Everyone with a pool should know their obligations. You can get the information you need on the Council website, www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz and search on swimming pool consents. Or call into the Council office in Trafalgar Street, collect a brochure, then take a walk around your pool area and see what needs attention. If you need help, please call the Pool Compliance Officer on 546 0200.

Maths lesson turns into money makerRoom 15 pupils of Hampden St School used their maths skills to help raise almost $400 for charity. The project started when teacher Petra Carruthers was showing her students how to use repeated ad-dition to work out multiplication problems. To help make her point, Petra used marshmallow kebabs and while keeping them inspired, she says it led the students down a different path. “It kept them really motivated on the topic and when we made the kebabs they started talking about how they could make a whole bunch of them.”That started a debate about fund-raising and after voting on which charity to raise money for, the stu-

dents took pre orders from other classes and last Tuesday set up a production in their class room. The students raised $383 from the ke-bab making and a representative of the Make a Wish Foundation will be presented with a cheque for that amount at the school’s assembly this Friday.Petra says she was really happy with how the project turned out but is unsure if she’ll do it again. “Maybe something similar, it was really just taking that teachable moment and going with it. The children were ex-cited about it though and felt good that they were doing something for other people as well as learning the maths.”

A stunning spring day is just one of many reasons to love Nelson, according to a new interactive sign at Tahunanui Beach. Locals took advantage of the sunny weekend weather and hit

the beach on Sunday, stopping to admire the giant chalk board scrawled with reasons why Nelson is a great place to live.Reasons included read “because it’s cool” “because of the views”

and “because I love it”.The new sign has been in place since last week and was a joint project between the Nelson Youth Council and the Nelson City Council.

Boot camp back for breast cancerIt’s time to “get pink” for breast cancer awareness month.Registrations for this year’s Boot Camp for Breast Cancer, an annual fundraiser organised by the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust, has now opened. The trust has already confirmed corporate sponsorship for the event to the value of $7000 thanks to local businesses, and expects to raise further funds through registration fees ($15 per person) and personal sponsorship from participants. Trustee Kim Miccio says the goal is to have 250 people take part in the event, which would raise $3750 in registration fees. “We’re encouraging people to register for the event and then raise as much as they can in personal sponsorship, with a grand prize draw for all those who raise over $100.”Local trainer, Greg Witika, owner of Wairua Body Coaching

Systems, runs the event on behalf of the trust. He says it’s always a great morning out and suitable for all fitness levels. “It’s definitely not a hard core boot camp, the emphasis is very much on having fun and dressing in pink.”The event, will be at Nelson College for Girls on October 19. “I am intrinsically motivated in standing for the Nelson City Council. That means that unlike some who are standing, I am not motivated by gaining status, public profile or for the money that goes with the position. Therefore my commitment is in making a difference to a city I am proud to live in and serve. ”

John Armstrong has lived in Nelson since 1995 and is married to Rebecca with two school aged children. Originally from Christchurch, he graduated from the University of Canterbury with degrees in the Arts, Science and Education. As the current Principal of Henley School, John is a believer in lifelong learning and is currently completing a Bachelor of Commerce in management. •Energetic, fresh thinking and a family man with family values at heart.

• John’s background makes him a perfect advocate for the Nelson community and will bring a common sense approach to the Council table. With experience in working with a range of stakeholders and various viewpoints and having sat on a number of Boards he will work with other council members to provide effective, quality governance, reasonableness and value.

JohN’s top 5 Issues

1. RATES: “If elected I would pledge to keep rates low - they should not go up any more annually than the level of inflation. ”

2. SPENDING ON CORE SERVICES ONLY:Drinking water, drainage, sewerage, roading –

they are the backbone of a well-run Council and city.

3. TRANSPARENCY: The current council has become increasingly removed from the people it is meant to represent and is seriously lacking in transparency.

4. ACCOUNTABILITY AND EFFICIENCY:“Streamlining the building consent process, reducing consultancy costs and returning the council to its core responsibilities are goals of mine.

5. TRANSPORT: “I support the development of the cycle way network and the Southern Link.”

Aroma, appearance, flavour and mouth feel. Having a beer was a serious business for local home brewers who took part in The Kung Fu of Home Brew competition held on Saturday. The contest, organised by the Nelson branch of SOBA - the Society of Beer Advocates - at-tracted more than 40 entries, from IPA, to pilsner, stout, all from local home brewers who were keen for a taste of criticism and competition. The peer-judged contest caters for those in the local home brewing scene that may not have the confidence to enter the bigger na-tional competitions, but still want to compete on a casual basis says organiser Bill Fennell."We came up with the idea to host local casu-al contests at different venues around Nelson. This is the fifth one we've held and it's our biggest yet."Co-organiser Peter Mayes says the competi-tions was held to encourage home brewers to continue on, in the face of larger breweries who mass produce "the same bland beers"."Around 20 per cent of New Zealand’s brew-eries are based in the top of the south, craft brewing is definitely on the rise," he says. Guy Coddington, a local Upper Moutere home brewer and hop grower says he entered the competition to spend a Saturday in the sun, sample other local beers and take on a bit of feedback, as he is still learning."So far I've tasted one distinctively average beer and one that rocked. I think the revival in craft beer is fantastic. With a bit of luck the big breweries will soon be on their way out."The winner of the competition was Gareth Kerr and Matt Hoddy with their Red IPA.

• Well it has been an interesting few weeks with the spring winds increasing as expected. The cold southerlies though have put a frosty edge to a day out on the boat. Yet still I get calls about people doing silly things.• There was the traffic stopping kayaker who kept falling out of his kayak and then began drifting along Rocks Rd. Let’s talk about what was right with this incident. The first time I saw him fall out I thought he was simply training, the second, third and fourth time however his re-entry into the kayak or surf ski became slower and less co-ordinated. It was then I realised this guy was out in conditions that he shouldn’t have been.• Nothing right so far. The paddler then, rec-ognising he was getting tired, cold and possibly hypothermic decided to stay with his kayak as he could see he was drifting from near the inner beacon towards the Boat Shed restaurant. A good decision. This guy had obviously dressed for the cold as he appeared to be wearing thermals or a wet suit and a personal floatation device, right on!• When he saw he was closing in a moored boat I saw him attempt to use it as a support to get into the kayak, eventually he failed and in doing so drifted from the boat toward the shore again. Staying with the kayak (another good decision).• Many thanks to Sail Nelson that eventually res-cued the kayaker and helped him ashore.

Watch the weather, boat safely,

CBD parking enforcement could be out-sourced:

Do not make the same mistake as Auckland. Outsourcing just puts

up the price of parking for the public and is less revenue for the council. Jeannette MacEwan.

At least with the council doing it the money collected will eventu-

ally go back into Nelson somewhere even if that is someone's pockets locally. At least

they will spend it locally. Outsource will mean higher fees and higher penalties, booo. Glad I'm a TDC ratepayer now and have free parking options. Jeff Mahon.

Go Richmond, wonder why people don't go to town as much.

Keri Williams.

Oh good Richmond-Nelson park-ing bulls*** again, does one week

go past that we don't hear about this? Rich-mond is such a mega because of free parking. Pete Win.

If parking limits are getting stricter more people would

go to Richmond. Vibeke Friis.

We won't go into Nelson unless we really have to.

Trevor Walsh.

Hey lets scare more people out of the city (unbeliev-

able). Laurie Michelle Johnson.

More cruise ships on their way to Nelson:

Encouraging the passen-gers to stay longer than

half an hour would be beneficial to local retailers and tourism provid-ers. Scott Marris.

Great for the shops and ca-fes... as long as they don't

pollute our beautiful national park I'm OK with it. Louise Armstrong.

I do agree but hope Nelson puts something exciting on for these

people, shopping in Trafalgar St doesn't do it for me. Brenda Kenny.

We're a bit far behind the 8 ball on this one... short, sharp and bang

memories! Logging trucks and industrial sites not a very warm welcome! Kokonut Creme.

Speed cameras:Why is it that the grey speed cam-era van is in Main Rd Stoke so of-

ten? At least once a week. Is it because it is high revenue, or high risk area? Jay Park.

Election advertising:I notice in the wrap around adver-tising for Aldo Miccio there was no

mention of the council's sinking lid policy on heritage funding. Cynthia McConville.

I'm so sick of all this election ad-vertising. Half of the council candi-

dates sound like twits and as for the may-ors race, don't get me started. Can't wait for it all to be over. (Via text).

You can tell it's local election time again, our letter boxes are filled

with begging letters. "Vote for me", "I am better vote for me", all from strangers I have never met, wanting my vote to get them onto our city council. Each promis-ing the earth knowing they won't deliver on half their claims, as our present may-or said four weeks after coming to office, "anything I said before the election has no

relevance today." This sums up Nelson City Council. We the people are voting businessmen, and women, into office to care for us. It is the public who need the council not local business. It is the public who use the de-teriorating roads and infrastructure, it is the public who pay their rates to employ these councillors. Give the public fair rates. Give the public transparent politics. Give the public a city to be proud of, not statues and "works of art" (substitute Tui there). If you want our votes, prospective council-lors please be prepared to deliver on your promises!! Lee Griffiths.

Like most advertising, the Lift-off 'We're Voting Miccio' is significant

for what is missing. His supporters do not include former mayor Paul Matheson, nor long serving councillors Gail Collingwood and Eric Davy, nor even Ian Barker who three years ago ran his own advertisement of Mr Miccio's merits. Of course there is also the competing candidacy of former deputy mayor Rachel Reese. We have to wonder what these five experienced col-leagues are telling us about the man who, says Pete Rainey, "pulls teams of people together".Ren Kempthorne.

Many thanks to the Nelson Weekly for its outstanding public service

last Tuesday. The front-page advertising lineup let us know who we should not vote on to Nelson Council. The supplement even gave us all the reasons why.Dan McGuire.

The latest in home sound system technology isn’t much different to the latest in mobile de-vice technology. In fact it is exactly the same.If you have an ipad, ip-hone, android or simi-lar mobile device, you have in your hands the future of sound sys-tems. Tim and his team at Beggs Musicworks on Hardy St, have packag-es available that allow your mobile device to be your remote, play-ing music from your itunes or your computer hard drive through a receiver. It is a simple way to organise and play your music, giving you great sound at a great price.“People don’t necessarily have physical media anymore, likes CDs or vinyl, and if they do you’ve still got to get up, flick through their collection push random and end up with a bunch of stuff you don’t want,” says Tim. “This is a very affordable, very easy way to do it. Re-

motes are old news, this is very, very simple and gives you access to your collection either

on your computer, on your device or any radio station in the world.”Once you buy a receiver from the team at Beggs, download the free app and you are ready to go. “We are gradually mov-ing towards no physical media when it comes to music so the whole point of this is its ac-cessing the music you’ve already got easily. Peo-ple that have got this say they listen to more mu-

sic now because it’s easier.”Tim says the trend overseas shows the receiv-ers are getting more and more popular.Receivers start at just $1000 and it goes from there. Memorials. Celebrations. Jubilation. Protests. The heart and soul of Nelson’s community can be found on or at the base of the iconic Cawthron steps. The land-mark granite staircase has long been a meeting point for the city; its residents gathering there for commemora-tions, receptions, meetings and marches, for events so-cial, formal and historic. It’s been 100 years since local philanthropist and founder of the Cawthron Institute, Thomas Cawthron, donated the church steps to the community. In doing so, he set in stone the formation of Nelson’s social history. The centennial of the church steps is an opportunity to take a look back at and celebrate the steps for their defining role in shaping Nelson and Nelsonians. To honour the oc-casion, the Caw-thron Trust Board are holding a cele-bratory event this Friday and wel-

come the public to join them.Even before their official creation, the church steps were a significant meeting place. The hilltop overlooking Whakatu, where the Cathedral is now based, was long known to Maori as Pikimai. Because of its natural vantage point, the hilltop was the perfect site for a sentinel pa. If security was threatened, it offered a retreat with views of Whakatu to the north, the Whakapuaka and Maungatapu trails to the east and the Waimea trail to the west. However, Maori weren’t the only ones to see the value of the hill-

top. The New Zealand Company – responsible for the the colonisation of Nelson – set up camp there in 1841. An official access way didn’t exist at the time, but the hilltop became a central place of operations and it wasn’t long before it was a hive of activity with people climbing dirt paths to reach the summit. The first church service before there was ever an official cathedral was held atop the hill in February 1842 – al-beit in a surveyors hut. In 1843 lives were lost over land disputes between Europeans and Maori – during a battle

now known as the Wairau Affray – and out of fear, the people of Nelson built a fortress and refuge on Pikimai, access-ing the summit via the top of Trafalgar St – the most popular way it is approached today. When it became apparent they were no longer a target for reprisal, the fortifications were taken down and ownership of

the hill was transferred to the Church of England, who recognised the need for an easier road for their congregation. And so the steps were born. Three flights of wooden steps were built over the dirt path in 1858 and it did not take long for the day-to-day gath-

erings of the hilltop to be mirrored at the bottom. In 1863, Nelson marked the marriage of Edward, Prince of Wales to Princess Alexandra of Denmark with a celebration at the bottom of the steps. In 1877 the suc-cessful rescue of passengers and crew of the wreck of immigrant ship, the Queen Bee, was commemorated. The steps were now a place of mass celebration. The Church steps saw a jovial 8000 strong crowd cel-ebrate the 50th jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887 and the city farewelled and welcomed back local troops from the Boer War in that same year. The steps were setting the scene for important local gatherings, but as the turn of the century came and went concerns were raised about the safety of them. They became danger-ously slippery in wet weather, were rotting and in a general state of disrepair; but what could be done with them? How could they be fixed?Continuing calls for the steps to be replaced with per-manent materials ensued and amongst the debate dur-ing 1911, Thomas Cawthron stepped in. A well known local philanthropist, Thomas offered to cover the costs involved with replacing the steps and donate them to the city. At the same time he helped fund the continu-ation of the stanchions and chains along Rocks Rd.His offer was gratefully accepted and Thomas set about making plans for the ‘Cawthron steps’.“A real good job, massive and ornamental”, this was the look Thomas had in his sights for the steps and so he selected strong granite as the material for the project. New Zealand’s only granite, in light cream, was quarried from Tonga Bay, in the Abel Tasman and shipped to Nelson for the task. The steps were designed by Arthur Reynolds Griffin, a local ar-

chitect and built by Messers J. and A. Wilson Ltd. Construction began in 1912 on the six flights of stairs, separated by five landings and the

work was carried out daily by local labourers. They were completed in 1913 at a cost of £1887 and officially opened later that year, on September 20, 1913 with a large crowd present. Thomas Cawthron was thanked by the Mayor of

Nelson, William Lock, and his gift was recorded on the first land-

ing by way of a plaque read-ing “These steps were presented to the city by Thomas Cawthron ESq. A.D 1913”.What makes the steps the focal point of Nelson? Al-though ownership was transferred to the Nelson City Council in 1922, they have always belonged to the people of Nelson, as Thomas Cawthron intended when he first made the donation. The city continues to claim them as their own through public activities, meetings, and ceremonies and since their construc-tion a number of significant events have taken place at their base. Over the years the Church steps have seen many a special occasion. Nelson waved goodbye to troops on their way to World War I, held war effort fundraisers, welcomed back returned servicemen and even held their first Anzac Day service there. Any time a send off, official ceremony or procession was in order; the steps have been the go-to venue. Highlights have included the 1920 tour by Edward, Prince of Wales and in 1927 another royal visit from the Duke and Duchess of York - George VI and Queen Elizabeth I. A Victoria Cross was awarded to Sgt Al-fred Hulme in 1942 in front of a large crowd, and VJ (Victory over Japan) Day was celebrated in 1945. Undeniably though, one of the most memorable sights the Cawthron steps have seen was the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Phillip, the Duke

of Edinburough who attended a service at the cathedral before de-

scending the steps through an awaiting throng of thousands.During the 1950s, as Nelsonians began to find their voice on issues of wider concern, the steps took their first form

as a political platform and place of pub-lic rallying. From the closure of Nelson’s railway, to the abandonment of the Stoke Cotton Mill, the steps were a soap box for widespread protests.

During the 1981 Springbok tour, Nelsonians utilised the steps as a cen-tralised place of pro-test. The Springboks beat Nelson Bays 83-0 in their game at Trafalgar Park, but protestors were out in force and louder than ever waving “Stop the Tour” ban-ners from the base of the Cathedral. The strong bond Nelson share with their steps is unde-niable and they re-main in constant use today. From a relax-ing lunch in the sun, to a meeting point with friends, a navigational point to find the right direction or a base to simply set out from, Thomas Cawthron’s steps are entwined with the day-to-day activities of Nelson city.Every year thousands of peo-

ple march past them during the annual masked parade, during the Rugby World Cup 2011 a mass haka was performed at their base, daffodil day collections are based there and recent demonstrations against the GCSB bill were held there.

Thomas Cawthron’s generous donation 100 years ago to the people of Nelson may have been just that, a kind gesture by a lo-cal philanthropist, but could he have for-seen the central role they continue to play today and the shaping of history as we know it?

Today the steps have an A classification in the NCC resource management plan, the highest classification available to an object of major significance to the district

and protection is considered essential. They are also cat-egorised as Class 1 under the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, a status given to plac-es of special or outstanding historical or cultural signifi-cance. Secretary of the Cawthron Trust Board, Judene Edgar says the steps 100 year anni-versary “is a landmark occa-sion for arguably the region’s most significant landmark.”

• That blasted great white butterfly has upset my gardening plans. Why? Because I can’t grow na-sturtiums anymore.Close to our kitchen window, we have a lovely Moorepark apricot tree. The blossom is a treat, and it is a delight to pick warm apricots for a quick snack. Under this tree I had casually thrown a packet of mixed nasturtium seeds which equally casually grew about here and there, and gave a lovely display of brilliantly coloured trumpet shaped flowers. All the colours of the rainbow and even more. Some a fascinating amber and even brown. I proudly called this my “Monet Garden”. But now that blasted great white butter-fly has ruined all that, because he loves to feed off my beloved nasturtiums.• So. If you should find any G W B in your gar-den, please notify the Department of Conserva-tion immediately. Free phone 0800 80 99 66 and they will be around like a shot to deal with the pesky thing.• The blasted [my word there] great white butter-fly looks similar to the small variety, but is twice as big. The eggs and caterpillars can be found in clusters whereas those of the small white butter-fly caterpillars are mostly found singly. The great white butterfly can fly long distances which is a worry for commercial and home grown veg-

etable crops. The caterpillars feed lustily on host plants like your lovely cabbage, broccoli, cauli-flower, swedes, brussel sprouts and turnips, and will rapidly reduce the plant to a skeleton, before moving on to the next, and the next, and the next, and so on. Do you get the message?• Now let’s talk about something much nicer. I was delighted to see a lovely monarch butterfly today. It swooped and dipped about in all its de-lightful elegance. Monarch butterflies should be cherished in my opinion. So if you are fortunate to be host to any in your garden, be sure to have a good supply of swan plants in your garden for their survival. Monarch butterflies have a special place in my heart. At a time when I was waiting to have a very serious operation, I used to spend a lot of time quietly sitting in my garden. The butter-flies would visit each day always with a close ap-proach, but never touching me. They seemed to bring a special message. “Don’t worry, it will be alright.” So I didn’t, and it was.• Do get the potatoes in as soon as you can. It’s getting a bit late. Not so, for tender veges like tomatoes, pumpkins, beans. Planting now, is no better for the early idea. The same veges will catch up and even pass the earlier planted plants. Hasten slowly is the order of the day at present.

Over a dozen local charities and community groups have benefited from Nelson accounting, audit and business advisory firm Crowe Hor-wath changing its name. The firm, which until recently was called WHK, asked for applications for their surplus WHK branded jandals, torches, shirts and bags in a story that appeared in Nelson Weekly.Crowe Horwath managing principal, Darren Mark, says they were happy to be able to allo-cate the hundreds of items to worthy recipients including Refugee Services Nelson, Aotearoa New Zealand, the Maori wardens as well as many scout, guide and sporting groups.Over a hundred pairs of jandals were given to Refugee Services. "We hope these items will be useful for a charity and while it’s only a small gesture, we’d like to feel that it might be helpful to people in our own community.”

On June 16 of this year Anatoki Salmon Farm was forced to close due to devastating flood-ing and a large landslide. A flash flood filled the salmon lake and the breeding ponds with mud and debris, water levels rose causing the lake and ponds to overflow and more than 35,000 fish died or escaped into the river. It was a nightmare experience for owners Jan and Gerda, who have built their life on the farm and an enormous clean up was required. But after hard work and efforts from generous volunteers, they are back in business and celebrating their reopening - plus some exciting new features.“Like the phoenix rises from the ashes, we rose

from the mud and have become even better. The public will notice improvements around our pristine site, which include a new shelter, new seats, a new house style, signage, website and much, much more.”It was incredibly important to Jan and Gerda to get Anatoki Salmon Farm back open for business despite the huge cleanup ahead of them. Besides Christmas Day, they never take a day off. The successful tourist attraction is open 364 days a year and caters to 25,000 visitors annually– so they were committed to returning it to its former glory.“After the landslide it seemed like it was all for

Dinner for IHCThe Nelson branch of IHC is host-ing a three course dinner next month, with a special guest speaker set to take to the stage in support of the cause. The fundraiser is the second annual event of its kind for Nelson, follow-ing an extremely successful debut last year, featuring Colin Meads. As the major fundraiser for the Nel-son branch of IHC, organisers are welcoming people from all walks of life to join them for a fun filled evening in support of local peo-ple with an intellectual disability in the Nelson and Tasman regions. All proceeds from the event will go straight back to helping people with

nothing. No sleep, no prospect, no certainty but what else can you do than start cleaning and hope for the best? We never thought we would be open this soon and when we look back and see the photos of the disaster it feels a bit unreal.”Jan, Gerda and the rest of the team at Anatoki Salmon Farm would like to say a huge thank you to the many volunteers that helped in the immediate and ongoing aftermath. Thanks to the Takaka Fire Brigade, Tasman District Council and the generosity of locals, they were able to save some of the stock. Sollys removed thousands of cubic metres of mud and debris and when the ponds were clean but empty, New Zealand King Salmon sup-plied the farm with 15,000 young salmon

from their hatchery nearby. Catch your own prime freshwater King salmon and have it fresh or ready to eat on the spot at Anatoki Salmon Farm. Remember, the use of fishing equipment is free of charge and you only pay for what you catch. The tranquil spot is the perfect location to bring your friends, family or go on your own for a spot of fishing with guar-anteed success.A grand reopening held on Saturday was a fan-tastic way to celebrate and they are now ready for the summer season ahead. The farm is open for business seven days a week between 9am and 4.30pm. A new playground will be ready in October and the team is planning a few more special surprises. Keep an eye out on the Ana-toki Salmon Farm Facebook page and become a member of the ‘Anatoki Club’ to receive a year round 10% discount on salmon fishing. John Ellis likes a good yarn and he thinks he’s alright at telling them too, embellish-ments included of course. And that self-acknowledged statement is probably why the Kohatu man has just re-leased his first ever book – Tall Tales and True from Kohatu and Beyond. The book, which it’s fair to say, is more tar-geted at mature minds who can handle a rude joke or ten, covers bizarre and hys-terically funny scenarios John has found himself in. Most of which have occurred since moving from Australia to outside Ta-pawera. “It’s full of sex, drugs and rock and roll, plus a lot of violent but only in a very cheeky way. There’s even a bit of reverse bestiality but it’s all good fun,” he explains of the book, cackling a laugh in his Aus-tralian accent. “It’s a collection of stories from my childhood, early working life and latter working life.”John has been engaged in river works

around the Tasman area for the past 40 years, and his current tasks have taken him to Christchurch where he wrote the book to fill in the time. However, it’s in the Tapawera and Motueka communities that most of the characters were met, and

because some of them are still alive John was “very careful” about naming them. “I always tried to look at life from a more musing point of view. If there’s a funny side to something I’ll find it. I can tell a yarn, but generally they’re not yarns you’d hear

on the radio, it’s experiences I’ve had and with a bit of embellishment, they’re quite funny.”The humorous scenarios and experiences are not in any particular order, and include tales such as the possum in the women’s toilets, which ended up not being a possum at all, only something just as hairy; and the awkward moment when the site foreman left work and never returned, so a large group of forestry workers had to squeeze onto the same tractor together. “There’s another when there was a fight here at the pub and it’s still hilarious, particularly when the two protagonists removed their false teeth and mixed them up at the end of the fight.”But without releasing any more spoilers, John says the book is a guaranteed laugh, and he even admits there was one experi-ence that was just too rude to publish – it may have included walking in on “a lonely farmer” naked in a shed of cows.Tall Tales and True from Kohatu and Be-yond will soon be available from Page & Blackmore in Nelson. John has planned to pen a second book before Christmas.

Tasman’s most iconic summer destination could be set for a makeover. The Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board has just lodged a consent application with Tasman District Council so it can proceed with its long-term development plan – a project it hopes will result in improved ex-periences for visitors and residents of the seaside town. The project will see enhancements to the

commercial area, including replacing the general store, providing additional accom-modation and a café courtyard; improved recreational and visitor facilities on either side of the road; extensive planting of na-tive trees and shrubs and construction of a boardwalk around the estuary edge.Brian Gibb, who is chairman of the board, says Kaiteriteri needs better facilities that are well-linked. “Ensuring the town is at-

tractive, has good facilities and is in tune with its natural setting is also important to the commercial operators who contribute to the area’s value as a recreation destina-tion,” he says.Interested parties, including the local community, iwi and regular visitors, have had constructive input into the planning, and the board was confident it would en-sure better utilisation of the land as well

as decreasing congestion, as it is visited by 9000 people a day in the height of summer. “Kaiteriteri has a great reputation as a safe, family-friendly outdoor recreation desti-nation in a stunning natural setting. But as a small seaside town that has grown quite rapidly to support a much larger surround-ing and seasonal community, it has tended to spread along the beachfront rather than develop in a more coherent way.”

When Tom Hill was told not to take to the field on Saturday he knew his chances of making the New Zealand Schools rugby team had improved, but it wasn’t until a text message came through at midday on Sunday that the Nelson College 1st XV prop knew he was definitely in.Tom, who brought up his 50th cap for the college during the Press Cup season, is the first Nelson player since James Lowe to make the na-tional secondary school squad – the pinnacle for all college players in the country. The New Zealand Schools team will come together for a three match tour in Sydney next month, playing Fiji, Australia A and then Australia.

Tom says it was an exciting time being named. “On Thursday I had been told I was in close contention and that I couldn’t play on Saturday against

Marlborough [for Nelson Bays un-der 18 rep side] but I still didn’t know it I was in or not,” he explains. Also named on the weekend was the New Zealand Schools Barbar-ians team, which will play against an Auckland Rug-by schools selec-tion. Nelson Col-lege’s Finn Hart-Strawbridge, who kicked his side to victory over St Be-de’s College in the Press Cup semi final, and Waimea

College’s Fletcher Matthews, were both selected in that squad, which is seen as a second string side to the the schools team.

Q: My daughter has asked me to sign a document saying that I will be the guarantor of her mortgage for the bank. It seems like a simple gesture that will help her to get her own home; is there any real risk?

SPORTNelson prop makes NZ School team

The Subway Dun Run has been on the Nelson running scene since 1995 and has always re-ceived solid support from the local fitness fraternity. The nineteenth edition, on Oc-tober 12, will be no exception with numbers already nearing 100, boosted by support from those aspiring to attain med-als in the South Island Masters Games. What started as a rugged de-manding uphill section from the Maitai Dam to the Dun Mountain Saddle has now had most of the “mongrel” taken out.

Gone are the technical river-beds as they are not conductive to the “fat tyre tribe” mountain-bikers who now frequent what was once a tramper’s domain. But that has had its upside as trailrunners and walkers now have sure footing as they as-cend, plus legs are left less tired to enjoy the stretch down the nation’s first railway line to fin-ish at The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.Total distance of the race is 22km and registration qualifi-cation is completing a half mar-athon equivalent in 2.45 hours which enables and encourages

walkers to have a go. Entries close October 5.A year before the Dun Run began it was the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic’s turn and this iconic event celebrates its 20th anniversary on September 28. The 350-plus field has been sold out for months and competitors are in for a special repeat jour-ney of the original route from two decades ago. But it will be in reverse from the 1994 origi-nal as to the start point will be from Totaranui, ending 40kms later or thereabouts at Mara-hau. Full details on both events at nelsonevents.co.nz.

Winning the Price Charity Cup turned a good season into a great season, and with two trophies in the bag, FC Nelson Sprig & Fern coach Robbie Hansen wants his side to push for Mainland Premier League pro-motion in 12 months time.Having beaten Richmond Athletic 3-1 in the Price Charity Cup – which is a knock-out tournament for division one teams only – FC Nelson Sprig & Fern made up for a disappointing Top of the South campaign and Robbie firmly believes the Mainland Premier League should be the next goal for the side, which also won the league. “If we have the right people involved on and off the pitch then I think that should be the next step. There’s not much more we can do in the first division so that’s what we should be aiming for,” says Robbie. “It’s going to be hard to top this season but everything is going well for pushing for Mainland League [promotion]. Hopefully we can hold onto the next guys coming through to fill those gaps of the guys who

might retire or move down to the lower di-visions.”In order to gain promotion into the 2015 Mainland Premier League season, FC Nelson would need to indicate its desire to Mainland Football before next season – then of course win the division one and beat the winner of Christchurch’s second tier competition in the playoff promotion.Four FC Nelson players from last year – Sean Parkes, Johnathan Gough, Davi Maciel and Neil Connell – shifted clubs to Nelson Suburbs in order to play in the Mainland Premier League this season. The quartet played integral parts in the second placing, behind New Zealand’s top club Cashmere Technical, but Robbie be-lieves they might have stayed had FC Nel-son also been in that league.

rUgbY: Tasman Makos were brought back down to earth over the weekend, with a shock loss to the competition's bottom placed team, North Harbour. The Makos will have the opportunity to make up for their poor effort with a home game against Hawkes Bay this Sunday at Trafalgar Park. The game kicks off at 2.35pm.

boxing: Nelson’s Natalie Stuart has had her first two fights in Germany, losing both on decision. Natalie, who featured in Nelson Weekly last month, is in Europe as part of the New Zealand team and fought German champion Carlotta Hansen in her first fight, losing on majority decision. Her second fight, against the same opponent, was lost on split decision. Her coach Alan Dickey says she was unlucky not to get the decision against the 140 fight veteran. Natalie, who has now had 15 fights, is in Poland for an international tournament before returning to New Zealand for nationals.

The curtain came down on the 2013 season for Nelson Netball at Saxton Courts on Saturday. The season was a challenging one considering that fact that Saxton Stadium was out of action on account of the April 21 floods. Local netballers had the use of the stadium for the pre-season Geraldine Hodgson Tourna-ment and were forced out-side for the season proper. At times the elements proved testing with a number of wet days, however playing out-side helped prepare the local college teams for their South Island Secondary Schools Tournament which was played outdoors at Hagley Courts in Christchurch at the beginning of the month.Nelson College for Girls A finished 13th at SISS and knew they were to go into their semi-final without key players Rosa Edwards and Nicole Drummond who had been selected in the New Zealand Touch Team. To their credit the girls stepped up to the task and had the belief in one another to de-feat Jacks Drainmax in the semi to book their berth in the final.Taylors Wanderers A won the other spot in the final by defeating Rival Cougars.Wanderers centre Pip Lee looked to stamp her authori-

ty on the game with a superb intercept on Nelson’s first centre pass. Her opposition Ellie Bell, who lead the team in Rosa’s absence, was up to the challenge. Ellie stabilised the college team, both on at-tack and defence with great timing. She played with ma-turity, pulling in a number of well-timed intercepts and put in precision, stress free feeds to her shooters Abbey Franklin and Danielle Ker-wan. Nelson held a 10-7 lead at the first break and doubled it to see the score board read 20-14 at the major break.Wanderers lifted the bar in the third period with goal defence Jordan Webby gain-ing valuable ball, while Kayla Cross increased her load at goal attack, along with Kayla Fry at goal shoot outscored Nelson 10-8.With only ten minutes to play the defending cham-pions knew they only had to score off their own to see their name on the trophy once again. Although there was considerable ball turned over, the college girls kept their heads to take the game 34-28.Alice Hazlett could be well pleased with her effort at

wing attack, given the fact she has played the majority of the season with the WD bib. Merekara McGuinnetty had a solid performance at goal defence while Madi Stanley stepped up at goal keep and found good body position for the rebound to deny the second shot. Kea McGuinnetty (at WD for Nelson) and Nicole Gardiner (at WA for Wanderers) had a battle royale throughout. Abbey Franklin returned ex-ceptional statistics convert-ing 22 from 24 for an average of 92 per cent.Pip Lee was without a doubt the standout for Wanderers,

an exceptional player who was inspirational both on attack and defence through-out the season. Pip leads by example and is a player who gives 100 per cent every time she takes the court.Wanderers would dearly have loved to win the title as they look to 2014 and the path to get back into the Pre-mier Grade but on the day Nelson College was the bet-ter team and the accolades are rightfully theirs.A final word ...C’mon Silver Ferns – get rid of those col-oured shoes! Damn awful ... what do you think?
