released in May. “There is a lot of misinformation out there. This
book is the result not 20 just of good ideas but also of scientific
and clinical investigation, “says Gibson.
“Conventional medicine now recognizes that food choice is a

What Do You Think?
(Asking for opinions)
Woman: *How do you find dining alone?
How do you like it?
What do you think of your sorrow?
What do you feel about it?
How is it? What’s it like?
What is on your mind?
What is your opinion?
Have any ideas?
Is something bothering you?
Wanna talk about it? (ซา *)

Man: **Oh baby, it’s scary, spooky. It sucks.
It’s gross. And I can’t stand, can’t bear

I’m fed up with the moan.

And I am sick of it. I’ve had it.
I’ve had enough. I’m through with it.

Reading Passage: Health & Medicine English Speaking Nations Most Overweight (26th September, 2010)
Six of the seven countries with the highest obesity rates are English-speaking nations. This is according to a new report from the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development). The country at the top of the list is the USA. This is followed by Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland. The OECD looked at 33 different countries. The other 26 countries were non-English speaking. The ten slimmest countries included Japan, Korea, Italy, Switzerland and Sweden. Health experts are now wondering why English-speaking countries top the world’s obesity league. One theory is that they are all copying an American lifestyle; people eat a lot of fast food and a lot of it is in sizes considerably larger than those found in the rest of the world. The OECD report contains some interesting statistics. Australia has the fastest growing obesity rates. They are expected to rise by another 15 percent over the next decade. This compares to an increase of five per cent in South Korea. Education makes a big difference to weight in America and Sweden. Poorly educated women are 30 percent more likely to be overweight than those who had a good education. Swedish women with poor educations are more than twice as overweight as educated women. In the USA and UK, children are particularly overweight. Around 30 percent of British kids are overweight, compared with 40 percent
34
for their American counterparts. In Sweden, one person in ten is obese, although more than half of adult men and a third of adult women are overweight there. 7. What is the main idea of the passage?
1) Australia will be the top of the world’s obesity league. 2) People in English - speaking countries tend to be overweight. 3) People around the world are more likely to be overweight. 4) Educated people are slimmer than uneducated people.
Reading Passage: Social Science Travel Chaos at British Airport (22nd, December 2010)
London’s Heathrow Airport is at the centre of criticism for its virtual shutdown during recent heavy snow in England. Heathrow is one of the world’s busiest airports, yet it failed to deal with snowfall of 9 centimetres, even 3 days after the snow fell. Airport authorities cancelled more than 3,200 flights, leaving thousands of frustrated passengers stranded in the terminal buildings. The situation is made worse as the Christmas holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for air travel. What has been frustrating travelers most is the lack of flight information and basics like food and water. Passengers who have spent days sleeping on the airport floor are perplexed as to why only one third of flights are leaving, mainly long haul, when there has been no snow for three days.
Colin Matthews, chief executive of British Airports Authority, is facing a storm of criticism over this problem. Mr. Matthews could not give any real answers to journalists’ questions about the mess. He said in an interview with BBC radio: “I am really sorry…We are going to crawl over every aspect of these last few days when we’ve got every passenger in the right place.” Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron has added his worries that the airport should not come to a standstill because of snow. He said: “I’m frustrated on behalf of all those affected that it’s taking so long for the situation to improve.” Mr. Cameron offered the help of Britain’s Army to help clear the snow from the runways, but the airport declined, saying they already have 200 volunteers.
8. What happened after Britain’s Prime Minister offered help to British Airport?
1) The airport was able to figure out the problems by itself right away. 2) The airport asked help from the British Army by using military aircrafts. 3) The airport turned down help from the British Army.
35
4) The British Army hurried to supply food and water to the passengers at British Airport after claim.
Reading Passage: Technology Digital Newspapers on Their Way (22nd November, 2010)
Traditional and digital news media might soon merge to produce daily newspapers on iPads. This is if the plans of Apple owner Steve Jobs and newspaper mogul Rupert Murdoch come to fruition. Industry rumors say the new newspaper will be called “The Daily”. There might even be a name to replace newspaper, as the new project will, of course, be paperless. There will be no print edition or even a Web edition of this new media. It will download straight to the iPad or alternative tablet for an unbeatable price of 99 cents a week. MessrsJobs and Murdoch maybe onto a winning thing here. The Apple boss has the technology to be able to deliver digital news and Mr. Murdoch owns the world’s biggest news corporation. They also both have a knack of knowing what people want.
There are reports that Murdoch is particularly interested in the iPad and how popular it is. He told Fox Business this week that The Daily was his “Number one most exciting project.” He seems to believe people will prefer to read the news on such a device rather than a traditional broadsheet newspaper. There are advantages of the tablet over a paper, such as the lack of origami-style gymnastics required to turn a page on a crowded train, or avoid the corner getting soaked in milk at the breakfast table. Other more obvious benefits to an iPad include the higher level of interactivity the user has with the news. Another advantage for Mr. Murdoch and his News Corporation is that he could increase revenues by selling apps designed specifically for the iPad.
9. What is the writer’s attitude from this news?
1) impulsive 2) suspicious 3) astonished 4) excited

Passage I If you have a car navigation system but feel it is distracting and just as likely to lead to an accident as a stress-free journey, three-dimensional digital mapping might be an alternative. New 3D-navigation system technology has the capability to show the real-world appearance of buildings and road surfaces, enhancing the experiences of drivers or pedestrians who use it. For instance, if you are shopping at a department store, you can use your mobile phone to see the layout of all the stores, elevators and even emergency exits. As more people use advanced wireless devices, particularly smartphones and tablets, and wireless broadband networks develop, the use of digital maps is expected to increase. The widespread use of digital maps and advanced location-based services is also expected to increase revenue opportunities for mobile operators, software developers and store and product owners. The global digital map maker recently introduced its new Natural Guidance system, providing instructions based on points of interest and landmarks. Unlike conventional navigation systems that tell users how many metres before turning right, the natural guidance system will identify a specific place for users such as "turn right at the 7-Eleven". "This helps drivers keep their eyes on the road, rather than the navigation system 6. Which is not the additional feature of the new 3D-navigation system technology?
1) Providing instructions based on interesting landmarks 2) Showing the real appearance of road surfaces 3) Telling total distance of a journey 4) Identifying all layout of department stores
Passage II Because a large proportion of the land in Hawaii is rugged and mountainous, the state has little space to grow crops. Some areas are also covered with hard, black lava on which nothing can grow. Even so, Hawaii produces large quantities of farm products. The volcanic soil in the valleys and lowlands is very fertile, and the warm climate makes it possible to grow crops all year long. Rainfall is plentiful on the northern and eastern sides of each island. Much of the land on the southern and western sides of each island receives too little rainfall for most crops to grow well, but in many of the places where rainfall is light, wells and mountain streams supply water for irrigation. 7. The main purpose of the passage is …………………
