There are free municipal parking bays on either side of the hotel and overflow parking bays at

Grosvenor Court.

Day delegate parking is R30 per vehicle per day.

MORNING EXERCISE ON THE PROMENADE

With the beach in front on our hotel, we cannot “not” make use of this beauty.

Our committee members will be organising a run/walk along the beach on Monday and Tuesday

morning. Please look out for more information and times at the registration desk. You don’t have to

be a marathon runner to join this, there will be routes for the delegates who would prefer a stroll

along the beach. There is also a permanent outdoor gym along the promenade which is very popular

in the early mornings.

From a safety perspective, we suggest that you take normal precaution and do not take valuables

with you. If heading out alone, the best is to jog along the promenade at North Beach.

Wonderful beaches!

Durban’s beaches rest along a part of golden sand known as the Golden Mile. Endowed with warm water, strong waves as well as limitless sandy beaches, you’ll soon realize why Durban (eThekwini) is everyone’s favourite beachfront playground. Durban’s beaches provide public amenities, protecting shark nets, beacons to point out safe swimming, as well as lifeguards available for the whole day. Our top 5 beaches include North Beach, Addington Beach, Umhlanga Rocks Beach, Bay of Plenty and South Beach. So pack your beach togs and don’t forget your sun screen.

uShaka Marine World

The fifth largest aquarium in the world, the building of uShaka was pivotal in the revitalization of the Point area. There is free wifi available throughout the common areas of the venue. We do always suggest that South Africans bring along their dongles for ease of access as an overload on the system may slow the connection.

Plug Points

South African plug points are different to those found elsewhere in the world. Remember to bring along a universal adapter that you can use to charge your laptops, batteries etc. South African plug points are three-pin, rounded plugs. South African plug points take plug types C, D, M & N – although type N is not very common. Please click on the link below to see pictures of the South Africa plug point requirements. Click here to see SA plug points.

Climate

The climate in Durban during October can be summarized as warm and damp. October is in the spring in Durban. Daytime maximum temperatures average around 24°C (75°F), whilst at night 17°C (63°F) is normal. On average October has around 100mm (4 inches) of Spring rain. This rainfall is typically spread over 15 days, although this may vary considerably. On the flip side this corresponds to an average of 6.4 hours of sunshine per day!

For those beach lovers and surfers among us, the temperature of the sea averages around 22°C, that’s 72° Fahrenheit. The Indian Ocean is considerably warmer than the Atlantic and there are some favourite surfing sites about 50m from our venue door! One can also book surfing lessons within walking distance – or hire a bicycle to explore the promenade. Be sure to catch the sunrise at least one morning around 5:30am – a truly stunning experience!

What to Bring

• Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen • international plug point adapters • light and cool clothing for the days • warm clothing for the evenings and early mornings • for pre- or post-conference tours, don’t forget your binoculars, camera, and walking shoes • any personal medication

Max 18 delegates allowed

Cost: R1200 per delegate

Includes: Guides, transport, lunch, snack box and gratuities

Field trip guides: Dr Lauren Hoyer and Dr Warwick Hastie (Lecturers in Geological Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal,

Highlights of the tour include :- A visit to the Hole in Wall, where delegates can view a geological history extending from Permian-age Ecca sedimentary rocks to Jurassic-age dolerite intrusions and the brittle deformation and faulting related to Gondwana break (Late Jurassic / Early Cretaceous). The dolerite sills host some unique features, such as fluid-driven wall-rock brecciation and deformation, and many contain xenoliths of much older (Proterozoic) crystalline rocks. These sills also contain some primary flow structures, which are very rare outside of volcanic rocks.

Notes:- The start and end time of this proposed field trip is dependent on the tides on the day. High tide on the day will be at 7:30, and low tide at 13:30. Please bear in mind that times of the tour could change to an earlier or later start depending on the tides. Good walking shoes, hat and sunblock are a must!

PRE-CONFERENCE GOLF DAY

Be sure to join the pre-conference golfers on Sunday 6th October 2019 by selecting the ‘Golf Day’ on the online registration form OVERVIEW OF DURBAN COUNTRY CLUB A course steeped in history and tradition, Durban Country Club boasts the unique claim of being the only course on the African continent to be rated in the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World by Golf Magazine USA. It is also rated in the Top 5 golf courses in South Africa by Golf Digest SA.

A combination of lush coastal vegetation, sand dunes and stunning views of the Indian Ocean make this course one of the most unique, and challenging, in the world. One of the defining characteristics of Durban Country Club are the massive undulations on the fairways, especially noticeable on the 5th, 8th and 17th holes. Offering a typical links layout, the coastal sand dunes on which the course is built, offer an interesting and sometimes difficult round to

both the amateur and pro golfer alike.

Durban Country Club is a shot makers course that you have to think your way around. Most golfers don’t make use of their driver until well into their round due to the narrowness of the opening holes.

The course, overlooking the Blue Lagoon estuary and the Indian Ocean, has hosted the South African Open 17 times, including the centenary SA Open in 2010, more than any other club in South Africa. Also home to the Volvo Championships in 2013 and 2014.

SIGNATURE HOLE – HOLE 3, PAR 5 The par five 468-metre 3rd hole is rated the best 3rd in the world, featuring a narrow fairway lined with dense bush. A well-placed bunker on the left-hand side combines to make for a very tricky hole, making the 3rd one of most popular holes on the course.

Playing from a high tee – the highest point on the course – and overlooking the Indian Ocean and valley below, the 3rd hole is completely exposed to the sometimes-powerful gusting ocean winds, proving a very tricky tee off. Players must avoid the trees on the right of this straight-away hole, but also miss the large fairway bunker that sits in the landing area on the left. Large trees protect the green’s left portion and will also punish any shot hit too long.

DRESS CODE

Strict enforcement of dress is generally unacceptable today and it is therefore undesirable to prescribe specific dress codes for the Club. However, when dress is casual, members and guests are required to be neat and presentable at all times. Extreme casual dress cannot be condoned. The welfare of members and guests and their enjoyment of the Club facilities are of paramount importance to the Board and management and they reserve the right to decide whether dress is appropriate or not.
